production is just top-notch on this gem, extremly raw, ruff and grimey sound. pretty different from much of Dilla's more known works but it's just another example of how many styles he could handle. lyrically it's nothing special to be honest but it's not at all bad.

You can't go wrong with this one, its all excellent. One thing I pick up when I read reviews of albums where Dilla rapped is they usually say hes not very good, I don't get that at all. Hes got a great voice and flow for rhyming if you ask me, on the 'Fantastic Vol. 2' he outshines T3 and Baatin on most of the tracks. The production is ultimately the best thing about this album though, its just mad classy.

To be honest, this is my favourite style of Dilla production.
There were glimpses of it throughout his career, but all of Ruff Draft is heavy.
I remember not even liking it that much when i bought it (except for Nothing Like This), but i've been giving it some spins this week and it's raw.
Let's Take It Back, Nothing Like This, The $, Make'em NV and Shouts (Alt.) are some of my favourite Dilla beats.
A couple of the interludes are great too, particularly Intro (Alt.)
What's the deal with that beat? I'm sure i've heard the sample before.
Is there a track with that beat on some other Dilla tape? I really think someone should use it if not, it's such a great beat.
The instrumental disc is a bonus, i sometimes just play that through if i want a quick 20 mins of Dilla beats.
4/5.

ruff draft mahfucker! lets go!
Love this album. It always gives back. The instrumentals can get addicting.
I love every track of Ruff Draft. I still dont understand how nothing like this fits on there but it does and perfectly.I always wonder if there is all kinds of other "nothing like this" songs.

speaking of giving back I think we have today's freestyle beat.
lets take it back.
not sure but still this album gives back regardless. You gotta give some dough to stones throw for this alone. I bought my copy.
"Before we get this started, let me explain it. It's Ruff Draft. For my real niggaz only ... Sound like it's straight from the ma'fuckin' cassette! ... Let's do it."
