My dad whipped my brother and i when we were kids. Sometimes he made us get naked and whip us and sometimes he would put his leg on my neck so i couldn't get up when i hollered because the belt hurt my ass. I used to hate my dad because of the whippings he gave me and now i'm starting to understand why my dad acts the way he does. When he would get mad at my brother and i, he would yell and curse at us and sometimes he still does that. My dad's father left him when he was a kid and i know that upset my dad. There are different adaptations and strategies, but for the most part, if they can get away with something they will, and will exploit a weakness as much as they can.

Back to the topic of beating children, like i said before, beating them is wrong. If i had children, i wouldn't beat them. I would just put them on punishment when they act up and i would have a talk with them to let them know right from wrong. Because i'm telling ya'll when kids become adults, they will hate their parents for beating them and they'll end up not having a relationship with their parents anymore. I'm glad i'm not a kid anymore because i used to hate my dad when he spanked me. Our relationship is a little bit better now that i'm grown. I believe parenting must be both stern and friendly. You can't just be your kid's friend. They need to respect you. No amount of punishment will earn respect. You must earn your kids respect and friendship. Punishment instills fear, fear leads to distrust. Your kid needs to trust you.
If (presuming I have kids in the future) my kid steals or something I'm not going to take away his allowance or tell him he can't hang out with his friends, I'm going to make him doing something long hard and unpleasent, and I'm going to do it right along side him.

I'm going to have my kids carry their own weight, get a job as soon as they can, play sports, eat healthy, read, and most importantly do well in school. I never developed a particularly competitive drive. I play sports as something to do, not to win. I want kids who want to win and put work into everything they do. But I don't want to hold them back from being a kid. They can hang out with friends go to parties have relationships, what have you, but they need to want to succeed.
I'm really smart, but I don't try in school, and I get Bs and Cs for every A. I don't want my kids to be valedictorians, but i want them to be up there. I want to give them the tools to look back and say "he made me the man i am"
