a college education isn't a soluation, i would say it's only good for keeping you out of trouble and stagnation while you're at a crucial time in your life and giving you a sense of mission, but you can't get a job with a bachelors anymore and if you get your masters you're still black.

i think there is a polarization between two viewpoints in this thread. i would like to reconcile them.

first, there are a number of factors that contribute to the poverty and struggle that black people endure:
1. black people are born into poverty, and thus their social mobility is limited
2. predominantly black schools are generally poorly funded, poorly taught, and poorly administrated
3. black people living in ghettos grow up amidst drug dealers, criminals, etc. and are thus more likely to be socialized into the same occupations (a self-perpetuating cycle)
the list could go on and on. if you want to deny that institutional racism exists, then I think you have a difficult position to defend. BUT, there is a difference between recognizing institutional inequities and offering personal guidance. yes, there are clearly structural, economic, and cultural inequalities that detriment the prosperity of blacks. and yes, given that fact, it is difficult to pass judgment on the black community for its flaws (drug dealing, standing on the corner eating chips, whatever). but as an INDIVIDUAL contemplating these issues, blaming your problems on the institutions or the "man" will not get you anywhere. most of black peoples problems aren't necessarily their fault, but the problem is it doesn't fucking matter whose fault it is because the only way that the black community can better themselves is if they stop caring about whose fault it is and stop contributing to the problem under the justification of "well its not my fault im doing this, i was forced into this situation". its not that I blame the people who say that to themselves, or think they are immoral or something, I'm just stating the facts: if you want those inequalities to change, you have to work with the system until you better yourself into a position where you have the authority to change it. drug dealing obviously doesn't assist you in that.

This situation with me happened in 2002 i believe in Maryland. I was at my brother's apartment and 2 black girls came over to visit him. One of the girl's was somebody that my brother was dating and the other girl was her friend. So me and the girl's friend were sitting in the living room watching tv while my brother and his girl were in his bedroom. So i start talking to the girl since i'm trying to get to know her. So i told her that i was living in Cleveland and i wanted to write her or call her to keep in touch with her. So she said i don't think that's a good idea that we keep in touch. I said why not. I forgot what she said but i asked her if she had a boyfriend and she said no. So after i left my brother's apartment, later on this bitch goes behind my back and tells my brother that i tried to get her phone number and home address trying to make me look bad to my brother. My brother got mad at me because he felt i shouldn't have asked her for that since i just met the girl. I don't see what the problem is because how can i get to know the bitch if i don't have her number? I can understand her not wanting to give me her home address since we just met.
