Firefightin' in Alpha Site
We’ve shown off some of the exterior spaces that surround ONI’s Alpha Site with our Security Zone coverage, but more recently we shipped some new intel off to external press parties that detailed the blueprints of the ONI building’s secure interior.
This Firefight mission goes by the name Alpha Site. The building’s security measures seem to have been breached, the quarters are tight, and there’s no place for you and your squad to run or hide. Good thing running and hiding isn’t what ODST do. It'll be your job to drop in, dig in, and drive the Covenant out (or kill 'em dead, if they don't oblige).
And Alpha Site wasn’t the only space to get some fresh press lovin’, either. We're also prepping some new screenshots taken from spaces you’ve already become marginally acquainted with. Those, along with the Alpha Site images above, will soon pop into the Halo 3: ODST Field Guide for your viewing pleasure.
You dont fuck around when it comes to Halo.

The sweltering and sweaty state of affairs in Sea-Town last week have been swept away by a new weather system and we're once again returned to the gray-skies and moderate temperatures us peeps in the Pacific Northwest have learned to pretend we love. There's no rain just yet, but steaming hot coffee is back on the morning menu, more lunch dates are occurring outside of a single block radius, and the local meteorologists have finally come out of their makeshift bunkers. And yup, I’ve put my clothes back on.
Feels good.
And while Sketch began last week’s update outing by lamenting the lack of content contained therein, I thought it was pretty stacked considering I wasn’t at the office to actually make any of those words magically appear on your monitors. Not to mention, you got a good, high resolution look at Alpha Site (screenshots that are now packed into their permanent home in the Halo 3: ODST Field Guide).
This week, using a couple of those same screenshots for context, we’re going to step inside the ONI office space for a brief spell, brush past the failed security systems, and give you an even better look by way of wordplay. In fact, let's go ahead and do that now.
Alpha Site Declassified
The ominous onyx building ONI calls home in New Mombasa’s Alpha Site sits perched atop a space you should already be familiar with. You got a good look at the climb in our Security Zone layout some time back. But what you didn’t see was what was just beyond the walls of Security Zone’s swank lobby load out. In fact, when you first set boots inside of Alpha Site you begin in that exact same hallway, only now a security gate blocks the way back, leaving only one place to go: dead ahead.
Moving forward, you sweep into the stark interior space, greeted by electronic kiosks that provide a scrambled overview of the layout and direct you to check all your bags and step through the security terminals before proceeding to your desired destination. You can go ahead and ignore the warning. The security systems seem to be offline, and besides, you have more pressing things to worry about than the loose change jingle jangling in your pocket.
Depending on whether you dropped in stage left or right, you’ll have instant access to either a Shotgun or a Sniper Rifle, both latched into place on the wall straight ahead. Snag 'em and press into the interior until you’ll come to a space you'll be spending quite a bit of time defending while you're Oscar Mike in Alpha Site.
This central lobby is bracketed by three out-of-order elevators and ultimately bifurcates into two slightly stepped, and very cramped corridors. These short chutes lead up to more columned lobby space, memorials dedicated to ONI personnel and UNSC soldiers who gave their lives in the war against the Covenant, and the mission’s third power weapon, found mounted on the back wall, the Rocket Launcher.
By now you should hear the whine of incoming Phantom engines as they descend upon the open air platform to drop their deadly payload. Pay attention: this is where the overwhelming majority of the Covenant forces are going to touch down. Save the rockets though; the first batch of bad guys won’t require that kind of firepower. You’ll want to whip out that SPNKR later. Right now, you’ll probably have better luck if you double back and take up a defensive position in the central lobby space. It’s a good place to lie in wait.
To help us figure out where the other good spaces to hold up are, and to also supply us the how and the why Alpha Site is set up in just the way it is, we’ve recruited the King of Fun, Dan Miller, into our squad this week. He’s not green or very, very mean, but he does enjoy a bro hug once or twice a week and he spent a fair share of design time working on tuning and tweaking Alpha Site.
Q. The ONI building’s interior provides for some up close and personal combat. What steps did you take to make sure that players won’t feel cornered and overwhelmed from Wave One on?
A. The Oni Interior game flow actually went through a couple of incredibly different iterations before we settled on the current setting. What we finally decided upon was using the center part of the interior as a cross-roads choke point and allowing the Covenant to enter into the space on one side of the map and have the player spawn on the opposite side. This gives some flexibility to players so they don’t feel completely cornered or trapped.
Q. The site lines into enemy insertion points are also somewhat more focused than they are on other missions. Was Alpha Site designed so players can hold up and let the enemy come to them? Does that lead to camping?
A. Yeah, that originally was a bit of a concern that players would be able to just camp the two known spaces, but we put some surprises in to make sure that won’t be a problem. ;)
You can be as aggressive as you want to be. I’ve found I survive longer if I let the enemies come to me.
Q. I find I survive longer if I let the enemies come to other players and then steal kills from long range. It's a sad and pathetic display. On display in Alpha Site is quite a wealth of power weapons (considering the size of the space overall). Seems like there’s a really great opportunity for players to hunker down and pile up the points. Is that something you think about when crafting the various Firefight missions?
A. For the most part, Firefight spaces have the same amount of power weapons. One thing I’ve found really cool about Firefight is that because the skulls unlock in a certain order, it stretches the value on the sandbox weapons across the spectrum. Sometimes a Rocket Launcher or a Sniper Rifle just won’t get the job done in later rounds, and even the Plasma Rifles and Plasma Pistols prove to be gold down the road. It’s pretty cool because in marathon Firefight sessions, I find myself using and valuing all of the weapons at various times – it’s really awesome to experience.
Q. There’s a trio of elevators in the lobby that seem like they could come in real handy should players find themselves overrun during marathon missions. Can players expect to make a quick escape by taking a swift ride up the shaft? Should they look up from time to time to make sure there isn’t anything coming down?
A. Heh. I guess you’ll have to find out at the end of the set, eh?
Guess so.
ODST On the Go
Our Visual Design team has been hard at work, but they took some time out today to whip up these one-of-a-kind, iPhone-in-mind wallpapers. If you're looking to give your portable device a fresh coat of futuristic paint, these four wallpapers should set you up real nice. If you like 'em, let us know in the discussion thread attached and maybe they'll whip more up some time in the near future.
We Want You (Just Not In That Way)Tracking Sound, Officially
What gives the artist real prestige is his imitators.
Marty noticed that there are some Youtube imposters out there trying to grab hold of his coattails and steer their own little nefarious soundtrack train down the tracks to Fame Town. Just like the Twitter tweeters we unofficialized last week, the peeps coming out of these channels are of the same ilk—decidedly not legit.
In fact, early this week I sat at my desk with a glistening slick of drool curling down my chin and a grin so wide it probably looked like it was going to split my head in half. If not for the headphones, it might have. For a few hours, Marty and Mike’s real deal ODST soundtrack elegantly lapped at my ear drums, nearly sexing me into a sonically induced pleasure coma. The new stuff, my friends, it is goooooooooood.
And before you ask: why yes, I do love my job.
You’ll know the film noir inspired symphonic waves that make up Halo 3: ODST's soundtrack when you get your own ears on the tracks in September. Won’t be long now. Just a short month and a half to go.
I think you’re gonna be good and surprised to hear what’s been cooked up in the Ivory Tower kitchen. The good kind of surprised. Just like that time your parents told you it was hard times and that you shouldn’t expect anything elaborate for your birthday and then you unwrapped your lone gift to find an honest-to-God Shetland pony and a month’s supply of hay.
Man, what a great month that was.
And to supply an answer for the oft-asked question, yes, there’s an Official Soundtrack for Halo 3: ODST in the works. Nope, it won’t be released officially on some random dude’s YouTube channel. Sure, we’ll make sure and supply you with all the details as soon as we get ‘em.
What’s Up, ViDoc?
“Wait a second,” you exclaimed confusedly after watching our latest ViDoc Desperate Measures, “that’s not really a video documentary!!!” And you were right to be confused and exclamatory. You were right. But I should tell you that ViDoc doesn’t really stand for video documentary. Confused, confusedly once again? Yeah, words are hard.
ViDoc is actually an amalgamation of three terms: visual, informational, and documentation. It’s definitely not an industry term that we would expect you to be familiar with. In fact, we kinda made it up.
What we will expect you to be familiar with is the superstar providing the voiceover for our next ViDoc, which is slated for release sometime in the not-so-distant, but not-quite-so-soon-so-don’t-get-too-worked-up-right-now future. On Monday I was treated to a rough cut that was so rough it was almost nothing but a bunch of black screen bracketed by animatics. And it was still all kinds of awesome. Over the coming weeks, our Visual Design, Cinematics, and Animation teams will make room in their already busy schedules to put in the time and effort it takes to turn those blank panels I saw into the finished product you’ve come to expect.
When it goes live, I’ll wake up at some unnatural hour and deploy the goods. No man knows the hour or the day and whatnot.
Visitation Rights
A crew from Gametrailers dropped in this week and Sketch kept busy by playing chaperone, coordinating some on camera face time with Joe, Paul, and Marty and showing off some exclusive Halo 3: ODST content. You’ll be able to see the fruits of that labor soon. Keep an eye on Spike TV and Gametrailers.com for dates and times.
If you’ve been paying close attention, you’ve also begun to see the results of our Euro-tour Extravaganza, but the bulk of the press visits we spoke briefly about last week have yet to bear fruit. You’ll get to bite into those bits soon enough as well. Stay Tuned.
Grammar and Context
Hundreds of private messages poured in immediately on the heels of my mention of extra credit in last week’s update. Plenty of you thought extra credit surely meant Recon, others seemed to simply enjoy taking a poorly constructed fragment and turning it into a luxuriously correct sentence. Regardless of your intent, or whether or not the revisions you supplied were ultimately correct, the real issue at hand was one of context.
My charge and subsequent challenge was aimed at those who had succumbed to debauchery and debased themselves by uploading modified shots into their File Shares. Still, I feel like your efforts should not go unrewarded. I promised extra credit and extra credit is what you’re going to get. In my heart. You just earned extra credit in my heart.
Yeah, I know. What a load of -blam!-.
7 on the 7th
As of yesterday Halo 3’s matchmaking has been graced with a return of the “Bungie vs. the World” style playlist. While there’s no Recon on offer, and no scheduled squads of Bungie employees on the prowl, there is a whole heaping pile of custom maps crafted by the Bungie community. If you’re looking for something to keep you busy over the weekend, this playlist should be a good place to spend some of your time.
Blame Stosh
Stosh has been hounding me all week. "Have you seen the new Blame Stosh?" "Did you check out the new Blame Stosh yet?" He's pretty sure this is his best find yet.
Evacuation Process
If you're not impressed, you know who's responsible.
mythic map pack 2
Bungie invited Destructoid out for a glimpse of some new hot Halo action this week. Of course, being close to Seattle and an unabashed Halo fangirl, I answered the call with the enthusiasm reserved for special clients only.
In addition to some juicy Firefight action, I was able to preview the new Mythic Map Set and, as expected, get my ass kicked in some new locations, including the much anticipated Midship remake.
Let's be honest -- all three maps give me a Bubble Shield. In my pants. Hit that jump.
Halo 3 DLC (Xbox 360)
Developer: Bungie
Publisher: Microsoft
To be released: September 22, 2009
Halo 3: ODST will ship with all three map packs (Heroic, Legendary and Mythic) on a separate disc -- and it will also include three new maps to add to the Mythic collection. "Heretic," "Citadel," and "LongShore" are the new additions to the family; the first two being smaller symmetrical arenas good for team matches, and the third being an asymmetrical, more open map designed for larger parties.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/14399...tic01-620x.jpg
"Heretic" is the shiny new remake of the popular Halo 2 map "Midship." It feels the same, with the key weapons in place, and those who loved "Midship" should expect some heavy nostalgia. I always found this map to require way too much jumping around for my liking, although that speaks more to my jumping "ability" than it does the map. It's definitely more fun with the Carbine and an Energy Sword on hand, and a bit of fancy footwork to navigate some tricky corners. The Pious Inquisitor is looking sharp as ever, too, what with the upgraded textures.
Man. I love purple. The hue of my armour looks so pretty against it when I'm being slit toe to head.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/14399...del01-620x.jpg
"Citadel" is probably my favorite of the three, seemingly based on a Citadel from the Ark's Cartographer. It's symmetric, providing ample ducking spots, but demanding some serious attention to angles of opportunity for you and foes. You can run laps around the thing, which pretty much ensures a bloody encounter every two seconds, and if you're really quick there are quite a few sniping chances.
Lots of multiple target encounters and teaming up on enemies in this one -- just be sure to watch each other's backs while you're doing it, because gameplay is quick and weapons are plentiful. I found good old Team Slayer to be ridiculously fun in "Citadel," even if a little cramped at times. I love it when a level makes me just a little paranoid.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/14399...ore01-620x.jpg
"Longshore" is the largest of the three new Mythics, and the only one with vehicles. We played a full 16-player game of Capture the Flag, and I only wish I'd had more time to enjoy the glee that is this map. It's intricate, with multiple paths to your destination if you're playing one flag CTF or Assault. The defending team is really forced into cohesive gameplay, which is refreshing -- I'm getting sick of maps allowing the defenders to huddle around the flag throwing grenades at me, and not really deploy into tactical positions.
"Longshore" has too many angles of approach to allow the defenders to stick around at the flag; the incorporation of a switch-triggered extending bridge above the flag base means that at least one player has to advance to guard the switch ahead. As soon as that bridge is activated, it becomes incredibly difficult to keep eyes on all targets coming from ahead, above, and below.
The two Ghosts are tricky to maneuver around the structures but definitely useful to take out suckers on the ground, and the turrets kick some butt as always. Make sure to check out the freezer; there's some handy stuff in there, too. Definitely going to be one of my more played maps when I get the game.
All in all, nice stuff. It's great to see Bungie listening to suggestions, as they mentioned the main reason for bringing "Midship" back as "Heretic" was fan service, and they seemed excited about being able to release it as close to a pixel for pixel reconstruction as possible. Always nice to feel like the audience is being heard.
Check the gallery for some pretty epic screenshots.

heretic(halo 2 midship):
citadel:
longshore:
im liking how longshore looks
yeah it reminds me of that first flood level in the campaign
cant remember its name
already know heretic is gonna get TOO much play
will every odst and not only the special editions ship with these?
they will also be available to download im sure?
ahhhh thank god bungie isnt waiting until the holidays to release this like so many others:mexico:
yeah what will happen is the game will come with TWO discs, one with the campaign and firefight games for ODST. the other disc will be a multiplayer disc, with EVERY multiplayer map inc. these new three.
it will cure the problem of the loading, its tricky getting the original mythic maps to load if you have a close to full hard drive.

Last week we unleashed a media blitz focused on the exclusive Halo 3 multiplayer maps included with Halo 3: ODST. Today we’re lifting the lid on Citadel with a little guided tour with designer Lars Bakken, artist Blake Low, and art director Justin Hayward pointing out the areas of interest. If you already had a good, long look but still want to know more, you’ve come to the right place.
Under GlassQ. What aspects of Citadel did you work on?
Lars Bakken - I was the Designer on Citadel.
Justin Hayward - I provided art direction when needed.
Blake Low - After many painstaking hours of architecting work being done over and over by the very talented (and slightly disturbed) Paul Russel, I took over ownership of the final game play space and worked alongside of Lars to bring it home!
The Citadel that exists now went through more iteration than most small maps ever should. Paul and Lars did the leg work to trim the fat. Then I jumped in and hit it with my spice weasel. Bam!
Q. The fictional setting is obviously Forerunner. Any other clues or hints as to its whereabouts or purpose?
LB. Justin or Blake can speak more to this, but it does happen in a Forerunner structure sitting high above a desert. It's very remote.
BL. I think this was a Forerunner day care. The Forerunner would bring their young here and drop them off while they went off to work to Forerunner it up. The little baby Forerunners would spend most of their infant life here in this facility playing in the sunlight or sleeping in the shade. And now it’s a battleground. War has made monsters of us all.
[Editor’s Note: Not sure that’s canon, Blake. –Urk]
JH. It is a small section of the Forerunner structure that players first saw in the Halo 3 multiplayer map Epitaph.
[Editor’s Note: Ah, that's the legit stuff. –Urk]
Q. Word on the streets is that Citadel was once a radically different space. What changed from conception to completion and what remained the same?
LB. Originally, it was much closer to the campaign space it's based around. Well, sort of. It was a much bigger level, with two elevators (one for each team) and really was designed for 2-sided objective games. We basically scrapped most of that design and it became a much smaller symmetrical space. The only thing remaining is the setting.
BL. To be honest the Citadel that exists today is in almost no way the same space as it was once intended. The short version of the story is that the map was too large, complicated, confusing, and easy to get lost in. I think the only major element that still remains is the idea of having a large open center room with a platform to jump to and from. However, even the size and shape of that room changed. The new design works much better in focusing the combat and objectives.
JH. It started life big and sprawling, but we wanted small and tight. And so it came to be.
Q. What was the most difficult element for you to get just right?
BL. Player orientation on the map. Being a symmetrical map, it sometimes is really hard to tell what side of the map you have ended up on or how to relate to teammates where you are or where the action is. We decided to open up some windows, so to speak.
LB. Probably the sight lines. We wanted it to be a small space but feel like you could defend certain areas, and hide as someone who was trying to get away from combat.
Q. What role is Citadel intended to play in the Halo 3 multiplayer space and what game types work the best?
LB. It's very much the small symmetrical map that fans have been asking for. It works very well for small Team Slayer, but it's really great for Multi Flag and Assault as well.
BL. This is meant to give people that hot, dirty, 4v4 action. Everything unfolds at a pretty fast pace and involves some quick thinking and an even quicker trigger finger. You are never far from the action.
Q. Being symmetrical and a bit on the small side, seems players could get turned around easily. What kind of steps do you take to make sure people stay oriented?
BL. Originally there was only a color change from one side of the map to the other, but we wanted something a lot more apparent and in your face. What better to be in your face than the blinding sunlight right? We populated one half of the map with large windows which allowed for some very nice warm light contrast. I think the result was pretty successful.
JH. It's subtle, but effective.
LB. The great thing about Citadel is that the outer loop will always take you to one of the two "bases." Basically, you can pick a direction and just go. You're guaranteed to run into a skirmish or find a good weapon. It doesn't take long at all to get oriented, because you can just pick a route and start running.
Q. What role does weapon layout, equipment, and power-ups play on Citadel?
LB. Like all symmetrical maps, weapon layout is the same on each side. There are a couple of Overshields that are usually grabbed in the first few seconds of play. The equipment comes back pretty quickly in the default setup, which makes for a lot of equipment usage. Some players will find this refreshing, while others may opt to take it out.
BL. The big weapon of the map is the Rocket Launcher that’s placed right out in the middle of the map. Everyone gravitates toward it pretty quickly, so it ends up being more of a prize for the remaining survivors of a firefight. However I think the energy drain comes in far more handy on this map than those of the past. You can cut off paths and force flag carriers to take a longer alternate route giving your team more time or throw one down a hall and weaken a cluster of enemies. I can’t wait to see the variety of tactics people use when they don’t veto it. :)
Q. What’s something you think players would be surprised to learn about Citadel (either the map or the process of making it)?
LB. That it was a completely different map for the first couple months of its lifespan. Other than the way the two maps looked, they don't share much.
BL. No matter what your opinion of Citadel ends up being, 6.7 people out of 7.3 agree that it’s far more awesome than you think.
Awesome. Citadel thoroughly explored keep a look out for some Longshore and Heretic coverage, coming soon.

A small Bungie team will be busy playing Firefight with the folks at Gamescom this week, but if you're reading this, you've probably been left behind. Don't worry, we’re not going to leave you empty-handed. Though your feet have been stayed, we know you are no heretic. Rest your eyes upon the latest Firefight offering:
RALLY POINT
Sector 10 inside the city of New Mombasa has seen better days. The air is heavy with acrid smoke parted only by the constant arrival of enemy drop ships. Lucky for you, the crossroads that converge on the entrance into ONI’s Alpha Site offer up a textbook choke point. The Covenant has come to claim access. You and your squad of ODST’s are going to stop them at all costs.
Fog of War
Alongside this pair of images we’re also screening the latest Halo 3: ODST ViDoc for those in attendance at Gamescom this week. While we’re not quite ready to drop that onto B.net, you should definitely stick around and keep your eyes peeled. We’ll rally and serve it up as soon as we can.
Stay Tuned.

Unpleasant surprise awaits Halo: ODST pirates, says MS
by Mike Smith
Buzz up!
A few fortunate gamers were able to pick up copies of the next Halo game, Halo 3: ODST, when a French retail store inadvertently put the game -- which isn't due to release until September 22 -- up for sale last week. Copies turned up for download on file-sharing networks shortly thereafter, but there's a nasty surprise in store for any Xbox 360 owners who tries to play them.
Avast me mateys!
According to the Twitter feed of Xbox Live's Policy and Enforcement Director, anyone spotted playing downloaded copies of the game on Xbox Live faces a permanent ban from the service.
"Hrm. I spy with my little eye some *illegitimate* ODST players. No early play for you. Commencing permabans," he said yesterday. He later clarified that those who bought legitimate copies early will not be punished.
"If a user happens to purchase a legit copy of Halo 3: ODST early, then our problem is not with the user but the retailer who broke the street date. Those individuals will not be punished," he told Kotaku.
Microsoft is also known to ban users from Xbox Live for modifying their consoles, cheating, offensive behavior, or fraud.
So if you're jonesing for a look at ODST, but you're not one of the few fortunate individuals to have secured a legitimate copy early, we highly recommend you make do with this awesome, just-released trailer instead.
fucken hell. Ban Hammer in full effect - multiplayer would be hard to find a game in.
pick up my copy in 2 hours :D
2 Hours?!
Are y'all that far beyond in time zone... shit!
I'll have to wait another 24 hours, but I'm going home a few hours earlier from work tomorrow :P

Got my copy yesterday. Only on Level 3 cause I dont got much time to play
Fun game tho so far
*quick visit*
shit is epic, some levels seem a bit short but its nice to play a fresh halo game thats a little different............. still wish the BR was in the game.
^^ All I can say about that is "hmmm...?"
What does all this mean, a clue for Halo Reach or something perhaps...?
new shit is a wast of $
1 campain for 60$ suck a dick
beat it in 4 hrs returned it for the full price
should be less then half the price its selling for
i doubt you played it on legendary if you finished it so fast, and its not JUST a campaign obviously - ALL multiplayer maps (normaly buy them in bundles of three) AND the odst disc gets you into the Halo Reach multiplayer beta ........... when ever it comes out.
i beat it on hard.....still not worth 60$ for a few maps...online iisnt that fun anyway...modern warfare kills that
id rather get the new need for speed for 40$ about 5 days more play time
for 20$ cheaper
