If they are trying to get in with mediocre holdings to a raise, I suggest check raising often preflop after limping with a big hand. ie. be the one to put in a second raise, preferably one that puts them to a decision (pot size or bigger)...lately I've just been letting everybody dictate the action, they raise preflop, I call, they continuation bet, I raise. It doesn't matter what I have, 67% of the time they miss the flop. My second option is to call the continuation bet, see what the turn action is, and act accordingly. I find most people don't fire another bullet if they miss. Just make sure they aren't initiating the slow down play against you. (This is a move better players make with a monster...bet flop, check turn, huge raise on river)Quote:

If you try this on a calling station with nothing, generally you're just bluffing your money away.
ok thanks for your input man! sadly most people i regularly play with are damned calling stations!!
no im not on any of those sites, i dont play online.
yo b-rock i got another question...
i had a silly idea today. the past week i went to the casino 3 times. all with the same plan. buying in 100€, doubling it and walking away. well it worked 2 times and the 3rd time i made 500 € after buying in twice (with profit money).
well doubling up doesnt seem that hard of a task. its a fairly small amount of cash but it adds up if you do it regularly. so what if (and this is just thinking/fantasising out loud) i did this every day (or attempted to at least) 5 times a week makes 2000 € a month.
am i...
A. Bullshitting myself, its impossible...
B. thinking of a great plan (to try for a while at least...)
I would like to add that both times i doubled up i didnt even play for an hour and didnt get phenomenal hands either...
i wonder what you think of this "plan". im actually considering this...
even if you fail once a week its highly profitable!!
Well, you ARE gonna fail more than once a week, it's inevitable. However, I've seen many people utilize this system and have it work. I don't do it because A.) I have the time and B.) I'm at my most successful when I have a huge stack and the luxury to make any play I want.
If you have the patience to try and pull this off, try it, but I can predict it will all end the day you run really badly and hit nothing for hours, also an inevitability.
yeah i think im gonna try it. i know winning every time is impossible but im gonna try it and see how far it gets me!
you guys gotta see this
I heard about "The Big Game" a new tv show where they give some schmuck 100 grand to play against the best poker players in the world, and they get to keep whatever profits they make. It makes for an interesting dynamic especially late in the game. So i was watching all these episodes when I came across a hand so crazy, i had to share...percentage-wise, this is the worst bad beat I've ever seen...
http://thebiggame.pokerstars.net/episodes/s1/w1/
go to week 1, episode 3 and start 11 minutes in.
Poor Phil
wow that was nasty!! i never saw that 4 time deal thing...
and speaking of bad beats...
The Big Game kind of sucks IMO...I don't like Pokerstars pokershows all that much...don't know why.
There's also The Poker Loung wich is basically Poker After Dark, 6 players, 20000 dollars entry sng but with less high profile players...
@ cap, welk casino speel je?

Sick win!
Had a fun bad beat in a tourney yesterday. I started off playing tight + got no cards for awhile so I had a small stack then I had to fold pocket 8's bc I was beat so it got even smaller. I then started a run and was building nicely and catching up until I got Aces. Made a bet making everyone fold but 2 and the flop was Q,A,J. Went all in and they both called so of course I'm thinking that I'm now going to go from shortest stack to one of the biggest. Of course one of them called with only pocket nines and an 8 and 10 came next. Haha
fuck im having a long ass losing streak!!!!! any remedys by any chance?? lol
5 left at the WSOP final table.
Grinder - 61 Mil
JOe Choeng - 61 mil
J. Duhamel - 46 Mil
Candio - 25 Mil
Racener - 16 Mil
Dolan - 6th
Senti - 7th
Grinder out in 5th!!! Trapped by Duhamel
streaming live now on espn3
Duhamel Qc Qd
Cheong As 7h
Action:
Racener folds the button, Cheong opens for 2.9 million in the small blind. Duhamel is in the Big blind for 1.2 million. He 3 bets to 6.75 million. Cheong makes it 14.25 million. Duhamel goes for a 5th bet, making it 22.75 million. Cheong studies for a few minutes and shoves, putting Duhamel all in for 95 million. Duhamel calls instantly, leaving Cheong with just 4 million behind, or less than 4 big blinds.
The flop 9h 3d 2c
The turn 6s
The river 8s
Duhamel doubles to become massive chip leader and Cheong is gone a few hands later.
Monday at 11pm Eastern heads up play will resume with these chip totals
Duhamel 188,950,000
Racener 30,750,000
Unlike this part of the final table which took 15 hours, the heads up match should be short with Racener having less than 15 Big Blinds to play with.
There were two astounding eliminations at this final table and one massive blow up by the player that outplayed everybody all day.
He wasn't the only one, Grinder made some really poor decisions as well.
Probably the best final table ever, based on level of play and excitement. This is the most poker I've ever watched in one day, and I'm glad I didn't miss a moment of action since play started at 3:30 pm eastern time Saturday. The ESPN3 live broadcast is the greatest, who needs to see hole cards to be entertained?
Wow. That's just crazy. He had the Ace High.. but damn.. c'mon..
Heads up resumes tonight 11:30 Pm eastern
we can have our own room now boys...

woah I started this thread in '06 and now there are 48 pages?
It's funny because I did well from poker, but nowadays at least online the edge is much smaller. The effort required to be profitable at a decent level us so large that in most cases it's not worth it. There are better ways to make money than poker, so my advice as someone who played semi-professionally for eight years is just keep it casual. This is coming from a profitable poker player.
Advice to anyone reading who's considering online poker as a main source of income:
I'm assuming you live in a 1st world country. You really need to be crushing mid-stakes and be a proven winner for poker to (maybe) be worth pursuing. That is very fucking hard to achieve in 2012. The reason is that people forget about the things they are sacrificing when they get involved in this game. Even if you are a winning player 4-tabling 400nl at 5 ptbb/hr or whatever earning sick hourly rates in the $100s, it's still not good enough. The point is - do you have what it takes to move up? Poker is volatile - in 2008 legislation forced pros in the US to quit. The game is always changing. These are just two examples.
Your poker hourly rate isn't comparable to a true work hourly rate, this is important to understand.
This is a generalisation though - if you have no other options or are sure you have what it takes, then go for it. But for the overwhelming majority of people: do something else, play live, learn some skills etc - there is higher Ev elsewhere and easier money to be made.
Poker pros making far more money than midstakes regs have quit because of this fact. See: timex, shaun deeb.
