Matt Hamill was brutalized in the second round of his fight with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 133. Following the TKO loss it looks like Hamill will be retiring from the sport of mixed martial arts. Hamill lost his last two fights, in addition to the Gustafsson loss he dropped a decision to Quinton Jackson at UFC 130.

HE SAYS HE'S DONE AND THAT'S GOOD. Local UFC man made good, Matt Hamill, Loveland HS grad, is going to retire. That's a good and wise move, given he has lost his last 2 fights. The one Saturday night was especially horrific. Matt was taken down in the 2nd period and blasted repeatedly in the face and head. By the time the ref stopped the bout, Matt was defenseless. I know lots of people enjoy this sport. But when a guy you know is getting brutalized, it's absolutely the worst thing I've ever witnessed.
Matt will be OK. He has a gym in Utica, NY, is part owner of a new sports bar, I believe, and has had a movie done on his life.
I'm very glad he's done with ultimate fighting. No disrespect to those who practice it and follow it, but it's way over the top brutal and, to me, senseless.
Obviously that last sentence will get MMA fan anger flowing, but let's focus on the matter at hand.
Hamill was an interesting story, a deaf man who wrestled at a high level before finding his way to the UFC by way of The Ultimate Fighter. He steps away with an 8-4 record in the world's most elite MMA promotion including wins over names like Keith Jardine, Tito Ortiz and Jon Jones (hey, that still counts as a win).
Some people may feel that he is stepping away too soon, but it is nice to see someone step away from a sport when they feel the time is right.
Maybe he'll find the desire for competition too overwhelming and ends up in the cage again eventually. But for now, it appears The Hammer is done.

Shortly after he booted Nick Diaz from a title fight with UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) that reporters would "flip out" if they knew whom he was putting opposite B.J. Penn, whose original opponent Carlos Condit was promoted to meet St-Pierre.
And considering the past 48 hours, White is not too far off the mark.
The UFC president today tweeted that Diaz (25-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) has been re-booked to meet Penn (16-7-2 MMA, 12-6-2 UFC) in the co-main event of UFC 137, which takes place on Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Diaz lost the opportunity to fight St-Pierre when he no-showed two press conferences in support of the fall event including one Wednesday in Las Vegas, where White announced his decision to give Condit the fight.
"I'm still blown away by this thing," White told MMAjunkie.com. "I've got to take a couple of days and figure this thing out."
White said he hadn't decided whether to cut Diaz in light of his misbehavior but said this week's episode had been costly to the UFC.
As the announcement of the main event took place, Diaz's manager Cesar Gracie told MMAjunkie.com that the fighter "got what he deserved," but was unsure on whether the UFC had cut him.
The answer is now clear as day.
Diaz this past June signed a new contract with the UFC that gave him the fight with St-Pierre and relieved him of his duties as Strikeforce welterweight champion. It also put the kibosh on a professional boxing career, which he had been within an inch of pursuing before Zuffa came calling.
In a video released after his ouster, Diaz showed little remorse for missing the Las Vegas press conference other than to say he was sorry for missing the "beauty pageant."
Diaz brings a 10-fight win streak into the fight that included three defenses of his Strikeforce belt. This past April, he dispatched Paul Daley at "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley" in an action-packed slugfest that peaked White's interest in signing him.
Penn, meanwhile, returns to action for the first time since a disappointing draw with Jon Fitch at UFC 127.

Mauricio Rua scored a big win at UFC 134: Rio when he knocked out Forrest Griffin. The knockout erased some of the memories of the UFC debut of Shogun when Griffin wore him out and submitted him with a rear nak3d choke. In keeping with the revenge theme, Shogun has said that he would like a rematch with the man who took the light heavyweight championship from him, Jon Jones.

It's a goal of mine; a rematch with Jon Jones. Of the five losses in my career, I have won three rematches. Only one of them won't happen, which is the loss against Babalu. Today he's part of the team, so this fight won't happen. But, of the rest, I have won three. Now it's only Jones' who's left
While there may be a rematch down the road, Jones is currently set to face Quinton Jackson in his first title defense. A win over Jackson puts Jones into a title defense against number one contender Rashad Evans.
It would appear that Shogun is going to need at least one more win before he can attempt to get his revenge.
DENVER – UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones puts his title on the line at Saturday's UFC 135 event, and the card marks the beginning of a stretch that sees six UFC titles defended in a seven-week stretch.
And while UFC president Dana White doesn't typically like to make future matchups before fight results have been determined, the boss believes Dan Henderson (28-8 MMA, 4-2 UFC), Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (20-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) and Melvin Guillard (29-8-2 MMA, 10-4 UFC) have all positioned themselves within striking distance of UFC gold.
White shared his ideas following Wednesday's UFC 135 pre-event press conference in Denver.
First up was a UFC 139 matchup between Henderson and Rua. The recently announced headliner, which White said will be contested as a five-round affair, serves as a de facto No. 1 contender matchup on Nov. 19 at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
"It would be tough not to give the winner of that fight the next shot after Rashad (Evans)," White said. "Rashad's next."
Henderson, who recently signed an exclusive deal with the UFC, vacated his Strikeforce belt as part of his return to the UFC, where he posted a three-fight win streak (over Rousimar Palhares, Rich Franklin and Michael Bisping) before contract talks stalled in 2009. Henderson, a former two-division PRIDE champion, ultimately signed with Strikeforce, where he went 3-1, which included a title victory over then-champ Rafael Cavalcante and a recent TKO of Fedor Emelianenko.
With Strikeforce now operating under the same roof as the UFC, White said negotiations with the longtime veteran were quick and painless.
"They went smooth," White said. "He wanted to fight in the UFC."
Meanwhile, the UFC's lightweight title picture has been a mess for most of 2011. A draw between current champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard – not to mention a pair of injuries that delayed the rematch – has kept the belt on hold for most of the year. The two will hopefully resolve the situation at October's UFC 136 event in Houston.
In a talent-rich division, it's difficult to determine who should get the next crack at the title. Top contenders like Ben Henderson and Clay Guida have each made a case, and the winner of a November bout between the two will certainly find himself in an enviable position.
But White believes Guillard, who faces Joe Lauzon at UFC 136, may truly be the one in the driver's seat.
"In my opinion, if he can keep his head together – because he's such a nutball – Melvin Guillard is very n@sty at 155. (pounds)," White said. "But the problem with Melvin – the problem he's had for years, and hopefully he can keep that under control – season two of 'The Ultimate Fighter,' if you guys remember that, he ended up losing the fight and was out of the house. We sent people to another house then. He was out in Vegas acting like he was Anderson Silva, like he was the longest-reigning champ ever.
"He's always had this problem with getting ahead of himself. If he can control himself and focus and keep training and stay serious, I think Melvin Guillard is a force to be reckoned with."

The LA Times has reported that Brock Lesnar will face Alistair Overeem in a five round main event Dec. 30 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The article also confirms that Overeem recently signed with the UFC. The winner of the fight will be first in line to face the winner of the November 12th Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos heavyweight title fight. Nick Diaz put in work on BJ Penn last night. I don't know if Penn is going to retire, but he definitely sounded like it in his post-fight interview. Dana White said Diaz vs. GSP is set for Super Bowl weekend.

I'm not talking about marketability, I'm talking about fresh new fights. Silva has already been tested with this match up, and he not only won but he FINISHED this guy. This is not a Machida/Shogun situation, or a Edgar/Maynard situation. In those cases, rematches were warranted. Sonnen is a proven cheater and loser, a rematch against him doesn't interest me for points I already mentioned. He can scream and twist reality as much as he wants. Bottom line, he cheated, he got finished, and his banter has gone so far from reality it's just not interesting to me. I hope the rematch doesn't happen, as he doesn't deserve it and there are other fighters in the division who do deserve a chance to shine. that was one of the best fights ive seen in a long while. i was certain the ref would stop it at multiple points, but he didnt and he gets mad props for that. i scored it 3-2 henderson, but i thought the judges would go draw. they didnt and im glad. id like to see henderson eventually get 1 more title shot but i dont think he could muster that kind of effort again. retire on the high note old man
I know some are going to refuse to rank this fight among other fights (right now) due to nostalgia of past UFC/PRIDE matches, but I'll ignore all of that and say Shogun/Henderson is one of best matches I've ever seen. And this is coming from a guy who religiously watches UFC, PRIDE (R.I.P.), WEC (R.I.P.), Sengoku, Strikeforce, and DREAM.
This match seriously had everything I love about MMA. I wanted Shogun to win, and certainly thought the judges could've swung the fight in his favor (or a draw), but I can see where they could say Henderson won 3 out of 5 rounds too.Epic battle that I won't forget.
It's going to get overlooked because of how good Hendo/Shogun was, but Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler had an amazing fight in Bellator too. Alvarez ended up losing his belt in a hell of a battle. Two fight of the year candidates on the same night.

There's no doubt that Shogun has the heart of a champion! He hung in there against devastating shots for 3 rounds and wore Henderson out. unfortunately for him, Henderson also has the heart of a champion and hung in while being exhausted and beat on for the final 2 rounds. Again, it was just fuckin epic!
