I can see playing online FPS's on a PC + monitor with the mouse precision, especially since I played the shit out of CS for years. But sitting at a computer desk a foot in front of a small monitor with shitty speakers or headphones playing offline RPGs (which I mostly play), sports games, or almost any other genre is kind of lame as fuck, I would gladly take a frame rate hit to avoid it. There's more factors into a gaming experience than frame rate and graphics. And if $50 yearly potato tax is a lot for some people I would highly recommend a job, I spend that on food every 2 days.
I guess nothing would prevent me from building a PC and still hooking it up to my main TV though, that's the only way I'd ever bother. I already hook my macbook up that way to play PS1 games
