and another plus ---> the song I gave you power....one of the best songs ever
it would be an 8/10 but i haven't found myself going back to it like Illmatic, but i think there are a lotta albums around that era of hip-hop that you would give a similiar rating but you wouldn't give too much of a spin
^^I listen to it quite often... After my final exams I'ma make a grand mafioso mash-up, mid-90 shit, and Nas (especially It Was Written) plays quite a large role in my plans.
the message is one of nas' best songs ever and affirmative action and if i ruled the world alone give the cd some bangers, i give it 8.5/10. Def not better than illmatic (nothing is).
Yea, i agree, possibly one of Nas' best ever.
This album is good, but some of the songs have to grow on you.
But The message, I gave you power, Live Nigga rap, Take it in Blood, Affiirmative action are all great.
7.5 or 8....
Nothing Nas will ever do again can be Illmatic, so if he is chasing that high again, or trying to top it, or if fans are looking for it, they are just wasting their time.
"The Message" is a bad ass tune.
8/10.
I like this album even more than Illmatic. Live Nigga Rap is tha dopest track on this album. Nas Is Coming is wack as fuck..... Street Dreams,I Gave you Power, Affirmativa Action etc. are classics too. I'd give this album a 8,5 or 9 /10
Personally, this is one of my favorite albums of all-time and I feel as though it is Nas's best album. My favorite joint on it is "Watch Them Niggaz" which is my favorite Nas joint period. The only song I didn't like on this album was "Nas is coming" but everything else was heat.
This album is an enigma because for whatever reason, as a collective, people could never get a good baseline on it pertaining to if they liked it or they didn't. I like it that way though. Again, classic!
It was good but i don't think is as great as alot of people say (and definetly not better than Illmatic, not even close). I don't know, i'm just not really a fan f Nas' mafioso raps; Album had some very nice tracks and all, but the only standout track to me was "I Gave You Power".
2. The Message
my favorite Nas track ever.................
this gets an 8 from me cause I was like everyone else looking for Illmatic 2
This album is better than Illmatic. My favorite album ever. The Message, I Gave You Power, Nas is Coming, Afirmitive Action, If I ruled The World are all amazing.
This is my favorite Nas album.
P.E.A.C.E.
Actually Stray Bullet by Organized Konfusion was the first song to rap from the perspective of a gun...or the first one that I know of, but Nas certainly wasn't the first to do it, although his version was real ill.Quote:
nothing ground-breaking? i gave you power is absolutely revolutionary. i mean that dude was a gun, straight up, he was a gun on that track. ain't nobody ever did shit like that in the game before
As for the album, I'd rate it 9/10, an excellent follow up to Illmatic, possibly one of the best follow up albums in hip hop. To me this is a very well thought out album, which is listenable from start to end.
^^ My thoughts.
Anyways, I'll give this a 9.5/10... best Nas album. The Message, I Gave You Power+++ straight up classic joints!
Yep, tha best album Nas ever released. 9.5/10
lyrics 10/10 beats 9/10
I use to think this album was slightly underrated, but now im starting to think it's overrated.
7/10, it's better than decent.

8/10 I gave you power and street dreams classics !
Classic IMO. 10/10
This is Nas most grimiest album
^^This is his second best behind illmatic!
nah, if ya ask me...it's just maybe his best album...overall tho...
id say this is tied with stillmatic behind illmatic
I'd barely give it 8/10. really good album though, but some of the tracks wasn't all that.. "the message", "i gave you power" and "shootouts" is some of nas dopest though. i just didn't like how all of a sudden he was this large gangster/killer.. it doesn't feel real, although the flow and wordplay is purely amazing!

unfairly hated on....some of the beats are similar, but i still like them
1. Album Intro
2. The Message-Sick as hell, one of my favorite songs of all time, the beat was beyond perfect as a way to open an album, it has the illmatic vibe to it, but more polished. Lyrically it's insane too the vividness of the gun fight is beyond comprehension.10/10
3. Street Dreams- GREAT song, dope uptempo beat that sounds like vegas, which is dope that they used vegas as the setting for the video 10/10
4. I Gave You Power- Probably one of the best stories ever told in rap. To rap AS a gun.. whoa. This song was revolutionary 10/10
5. Watch Dem Niggas- Dope ass song, grimey chorus the line "I have no game its just some bitches understand my story" is tooooo fucking real. Lyrically it's nas at his best, the beat is taylor made for him 10/10
6. Take it in Blood-Whoa.......what the fuck im i gonna say about this song that'll do it justice. Its my favorite nas song ever, i listened to it on repeat for days 11/10
7. Nas is Coming- dope song, the beat is sicker then the lyrics, idk if that makes sense but oh well. 9/10
8. Affirmative Action- perfect fam track, Foxy and Az murdered it, i've never sat down to do the math of what foxy's talking about but i've been meaning to.10/10
9. The Set Up- ha! this songs the shit great story, great energy RAW beat. 10/10
10. Black Girl Lost- I can't stand this song, it's too jiggy and out of nowhere 7/10
11. Suspect- favorite chorus ever 10/10
12. Shootouts- dope song, raw beat but gets old FAST and makes you not wanna listen to it again because for some reason it feels like it drags on for days 8/10
13. Live Nigga Rap- basement DANK. Songs grimier then soap scum. The beat is unforgiving, it sounds like they're tightly confined in a stair case and everyones just wildin out 10/10
14. If I Ruled the World- one of nas's greatest songs. not a personal favorite but theres no problems with it what so ever so it's perfect 10/10.
* Silent Murder- hearing it for the first time now, so i'll review later if i feel like it
I Gave You Power was dope, but not revolutionary.. When Organized Konfusion did it, it was revolutionary.
why say that you can't stand a song and say it's bullshit and then give it 7/10.. that's a rating for a pretty dope song!
It was definitely a solid album coming out after the success of Illmatic. I'd rate it 8, 8.5/10. Only 1 or 2 tracks weren't to my taste, but this album gets slept on way too often.
Eh? How does 3 x 5/5 + 4 x 3/5 + 7 x 4/5 add up to a near classic 9/10???
Done by averages your ratings would lead to 3.667/5 or 7.333/10. Dunno how you rate so many tracks so low if you rate the album so high.
I rate each track indivisual but all together when all the tracks are combined I rate the album 9/10
