Nas - Illmatic

i have no problems admitting i gave it a 6... i don't dispute that the album (in terms of status) is a classic... but personally, an album with so few tracks should ensure that they are all bangers... i like the three premo beats, the pete rock one and the one for halftime... but the rest are boring and take too much away from nas' ability on the mic... on a good day, i'd give it a 7, but that's as high as i'm willing to go on this one...

now this is an OPINION, not a fact, so if you're going to cry about this, do it quietly...

What about the lyrical content, you know, the actual message? I know a great beat can make the head nod and actually set the stage for the lyrics, but "imo" the lyrics are what capture the heart and mind.

I'm not beefin' or disputin' ... I'm just curious.

yeh good question... i didn't want to give the impression that i don't appreciate nas' ability on the mic... i agree lyrically that the album was definitely groundbreaking... it's just that i hate those four or five beats so much, that i can't get past them...

6 is very harsh score, it's probably closer to a 7, but it makes it more interesting than everyone saying... 10/10, 10/10, 10/10...

i bump at least one song from this album at least once a day, this album is CLASSIC in all ways, no question

Anyone who didn't give this album a 10 or at least a 9, didn't hear the album around the time it came out, regardless. When illmatic came out that shit was like, THIS NIGGA IS CRAAZZY!! The album is still ill. I've bumped this album every day for about 2 years straight, in my boombox and never got tired of it. I heard someone playing this in their car while I was on the Ave the other day and I got amped up.

NY state of mind is fuckin slammin....this is imo the best thing nas ever did.

^ word, On the Real is fuckin amazing, that piano is ill. and that first verse sounds like classic Nas, just like how he says he wrote it 10 years ago in the song.

MORE MORE MORE MORE 9 NOT AN LP I WANT MORE I PAIED THE LP PRICE BUT GOT 10 tracks. If the album came with the remixes and bonuses of the 10th remastered version i would give it a 10/10

I think this is slightly overrated to be honest, I think it's a touch too far to call it the 'best rap album ever'. That said, I really like it: 8/10 for me.

IWW is actually more NY Hip-Hop than Illmatic. Nas' sophomore album is up there with OB4CL, The Infamous, Ready To Die & lesser albums like Reasonable Doubt & Hard To Earn in terms of capturing the essence of NY at the time. Illmatic is a classic record but to me it was a "Pete Rock, Q-Tip, DJ Premier & Large Pro present: NAS" than it was a truly "Nas" record. It all comes down to personal preference in the end, but IWW is a 10/10 while Illmatic is 9/10.

One of hip hop finest, great lyrics, production a bit lacking at a few songs, however this album definatly deserves a 10/10.

IWW is wack when put next to Illmatic. The production is nowhere in comparison, there are too many guest spots, and generally I don't think it is as good as Illmatic. Could have done with being a few songs shorter too.

Illmatic 10/10 for me.

and has 'The world is yours' and 'One love' on it...how can't you LOVE it?

Only thing i don't like about Illmatic is that there's only 9 songs. This album should've had at least 15-16 songs. After listening to only 9 songs, he made me want more music from him. Illmatic is a classic album because of the hardcore beats and rhymes. Nas hasn't made a tight album since Illmatic. I know a lot of ya'll will disagree with me about that but that's my opinion and everybody has their own opinion. I just think Nas should've stayed hardcore and underground because when It Was Written came out, he changed and became mainstream. I think that's what made him lose some fans. I wish The World Is Yours remix was on the album. That remix is the shit. I like at the end of the remix when he's talking and he says i wanna give a shoutout to the whole fucking Queens. My man Tipster on the boards, keeping it real lord. The Queensbridge nation getting it on. Faking no fucking jacks. Fuck around and get your wig pushed back LOL. The video was hard too. LOL@white dude getting robbed in the alley by 2 black girls. Didn't QTip produce the remix?
