Why is it though if blacks kill each other its black on black crime, but if its whites kill each other its just considered crime? Three biggest myths about Black Americans

Myth 1: Most blacks live in the hood or the ghetto

One very common portrayal of African-Americans in the mainstream media are all too frequent crime reports of shootings in the inner city and of crime in the “ghetto”, in general. Paired with images, these news items and media portrayal give the impression that most African-Americans and Latinos live in the inner city. This portrayal isn’t helped by gangster rap and hip-hop video portrayals of black neighborhoods.

The reality is that African-Americans, since the 1940s have steadily left ethnically segregated neighborhoods. In fact, less and less African-Americans live and what qualifies as “ghettos”. Although African Americans, as a group, still live in more ethnically segregated neighborhoods than other ethnic groups, this does not detract from the fact that most African-Americans do not live in ghettos.

There is a difference between ethnic concentration, and high crime of violence prone urban areas. You don’t see this distinction when turning on the 11 o’clock news. You won’t get this nuanced distinction from many music videos either.



Myth 2: Blacks have low educational attainment rates

There is an often repeated claim that “there are more black men in prison than in college.” Besides being statistically wrong, it also bolsters the second biggest myth about black Americans: it is a myth that blacks on the whole have low educational attainment rates. While there are statistics that point to less black men graduating college or lower college graduation rates. The absolute numbers of blacks attending college has increased over time and continues to increase.

Moreover, the number of black Ph.D. Holders have more than doubled since the 1980s, much higher rate than the rate of black population increase. This fact does not get much media interest since the image of well-adjusted black Phd holders taking care of and providing for their families generates less buzz and money than images of spinners, liquor, and gold chains in a hiphop video.



Myth 3: Blacks are economically depressed

Another common misperception of African-Americans is, that on the whole, blacks are economically depressed or poor in the United States. Once again, media crime reports from the ‘ghetto,’ hip-hop videos and gangsta rap do not show an accurate picture of black American wealth as a whole. It is projected that based on purchasing power alone, African-Americans eclipse all African countries and many emerging countries. African-American purchasing power is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2012. This figure outstrips most other countries GDP.

The numerous portrayals in the mainstream media of black poverty and the seemingly “permanent” underclass do not reflect the overall wealth of African-Americans in the USA. If the African-American portion of the US GDP was separated from the rest of thhe US GDP, its $688 Billion would still eclipse most Third World and indeed many other “developed” countries, including Sweden. Not to many countries can match this amount, and blacks only have 13% of the US population. Many other countries make do with less GDP, and with many many more people.

Reality is the best weapon against stereotypes and misperception

in conclusion, while there are still many challenges facing the African-American community, it is very important to look past the media portrayals and stereotypes and to look at the hard numbers. Hopefully, based on these hard figures, people can get an accurate view of the true state of black America. This can only be done outside of the fear mongering, ignorance, and uninformed opinions floating both on the Internet and in the mainstream media.

You assume just because I'm black, I don't have a good paying job nor do I have an education? Well, I'm a full-time student (senior with 115 credits) and I work part-time. Do ya'll know how much time you waste everyday talking online about what other people are doing and what's going on in your life when you could be looking for a job and getting your own place if you don't have your own place? I got 2 jobs as a janitor and they don't pay a lot and i live with my parents but at least i'm working and i'm not online everyday talking about what entertainers and athletes are doing when they're getting paid a lot of money. The reason why i don't have a good job is because i have a learning disability which i'm not afraid to talk about and i don't worry about people dissing me because of that. My problem is very serious and i've done research about it and i'm gonna get help from a medical professional. There's a good chance if i get diagnosed for my problem that i might not be able to work anymore and i'll probably get a disability check which i'm sure won't be enough for me to live on but i'd rather be working. I don't want ya'll thinking that i'm lazy and i don't wanna work because i'm not lazy and i don't wanna get a disability check. I've been working 2 jobs most of my life and i'm tired of it. I want just one job that pays good but unfortunately it looks like that's not gonna happen because i'm not good at a lot of jobs. I've tried a lot of different jobs and i've been fired from several jobs. I've even quit a few jobs because i got tired of my ignorant black co-workers bothering me because i'm quiet. My main focus when i have a job is to concentrate on doing a good job. I don't come to work to make friends and get in people's business which is what a lot of blacks do.



I'm trying to have a lot of money like entertainers and businessmen so i'll be damned if i'm gonna waste my time talking about what they're doing. I'm about chasing money and not chasing bitches. Ya'll fools always talking about women look good and you wanna fuck some good looking women but these women aren't gonna pay attention to you clowns when you don't have any money and you don't have your own place. When you got a good job, your own place and a nice car, then that's when women will chase you.
