^^^After my own triangular UFO sighting, I have done much research into them, and, in particular the Belgium sightings of 1989-1990 I truly believe that the U.S. is behind most, if not all triangular UFO sightings. The black project TR3B is real! It is likely the most technologically advanced piece of equipment mankind has ever created. The question is, how did they develop this technology? Is it reverse engineered alien technology? Anyone who is interested in this google Edgar Fouche. I believe he is an honest man who knows what he's talking about. The TR3B supposedly uses magnetic field disruption technology for anti-gravity effects. The MFD makes perfect sense scientifically when you learn how it works. We already have technology far beyond anything most people can imagine!

I have no doubt that the photo is real. Recently a man has claimed that he was responsible for the photo/video and it was a fake. He's a liar! Probably paid by the U.S. to make the claim imo. He has absolutely NO evidence that he was responsible for it! What pisses me off is that the video that this photo was taken from is nowhere to be found. Believe me, I've tried like hell to find it. There are tons of videos of these triangles all over the world though.

Here is video from St. Petersburg Russia taken in 1997 that appears to be the same type of object as the Belgium photo.

This is a 35-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1973, a major, world-wide sighting wave. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original 1973 chronology from UFOE II), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]), and Michael Swords.

In January of 1973 I was transferred from Hillsboro, Illinois to Mt. Vernon, Indiana, and set up the UFO Filter Center to log UFO reports in the Midwest for the MADAR (UFO detection) Project. The states included in the study were: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Therefore this chronos is probably more comprehensive for those states. Most of the NL (nocturnal light) cases that I logged from the UFO Filter Center calls were not used in this chronos, so what you see are the more notable cases. Here is a sample of one of the message slips hastily completed regarding a sighting that COULD have been of value had it been investigated, but I was unable to get enough information..

As evidence for the nuclear connection continued to mount, world-shaking events were taking place which led to the Arab/Israeli War, fought from October 6 to October 26. The war had far-reaching implications for many nations.

The 1973 sighting wave was concentrated in the last half of the year, and featured the largest number of humanoid occupant sightings in many years. Several abductions were reported during this period (see Section XIII, UFOE II). The sightings peaked in mid to late October, with October 17 representing perhaps one of the most extraordinary single days for "high-strangeness" cases in UFO history (see Section XII). Dr. Richard Haines provided this Table 1, 116, Table 1, 117 of aircraft incidents in 1979 (Ref. 8).

Note: In regard to Humanoid Reports, there doesn't appear to be any cases as solid as a military radar-visual triangulation case, nor any military multiple-witness incidents, nor any humanoid cases involving radar-visual tracking, or where any astronomers or PhD scientists have seen humanoids and UFO's? It is important for us to list them, however, but only those incidents where UFOs were observed at the time or supporting evidence warrants.

Jan. 2, 1973; Santa Ana, CA
At least eight witnesses observed a large oval-shaped object with a dome on top hovering over the town. Witnesses reported that at times the object appeared to hover as low as two hundred feet from the ground. One witness said an object resembling a large amber-colored meteor sped through the evening sky then suddenly dropped straight down and hovered above telephone wires at 200 to 400 feet.

The witness described the object as metallic silvery gray in color, elliptical in shape like two "saucers fastened rim to rim." A wide band of brilliant amber light encircled the middle, said the witness. The entire thing spun like a child's top.

After hovering for about seven seconds, the object sped towards the southwest at terrific speed. As the object started to move away a hum like an electric generator could be heard. Some witnesses reported three distinct bands of color encircling the object and two antennae angling out from the dome. These same witnesses also reportedly observed a rectangular door on the bottom. January - February 1973; Cherokee County, S.C.
Police in Cherokee County received so many UFO sighting reports that they stopped sending cars out to investigate. The sightings according to police have been in the hundreds. The objects being spotted by county residents have been described as "cylindrical, cigar-shaped," "triangular," and "round like a saucer with a cabin on top." By the end of February, according to police UFO watching had become so popular that on one night more than 50 cars were parked along the side of a road in the county in hopes of catching a glimpse of the object. Day after day, week after week numerous residents claim that they have seen a "huge bright white light," moving slowly above their community. More than 250 people have reportedly seen the object since it was first sighted in February. The UFO has been observed by many residents hovering soundlessly at tree at tree-top level for minutes at a time before disappearing. Many have claimed the object is huge, with estimates ranging from "bigger that a car" to 1/2 the size of a house.

A number of the sightings according to local reports have occurred near the United Nuclear Corp. plant located nearby. United Nuclear operates a waste reclamation plant. Witnesses to these sightings have reported observing what appear to be military aircraft searching or patrolling the area following UFO sightings. Thomas Gariepy, a reporter for the Providence Evening Bulletin, is among those residents who have observed a UFO in recent months. (Reference: UFO INVESTIGATOR, May 1973, page 2)

Feb. 1973; Norah Head, NSW, Australia
12:45 AM. A couple was parked near a kiosk. The nearest streetlight began acting up, dimming off, then on, and back again, cycling like this until it had diminished to a faint glow. Then, beyond some trees in the general direction of the light, they saw a bright "ball" rise. It was golden colored and the apparent size of the full Moon. It hovered. It began to change colors, sliding through the spectrum from gold to orange to deep red. The couple's curiosity got them to decide to drive nearer the Ball; but to their consternation, they could not get the car to function. Only the headlights worked, and that just barely, at a low dull level. Frightened now, they decided to wait in the car for the Ball to leave.

Then, small, red, glowing balls ejected from the larger object, and sailed forward and dropped down behind the trees. The Ball then rose slightly and began to move away. When it disappeared, the streetlight returned to normal function, and the car was able to be started. The couple left the scene without looking any further into the area.

Feb. 2, 1973; Ohura Beacon (area), Auckland, New Zealand
2:02 a.m. Intense blue-white light paced airliner for 20-25 seconds, navigation instruments malfunctioned (UFOE II, Section III). Table 1, 116, Captain Peter Telling, flying a Grand Commander aircraft at a altitude of 10,000 ft over the Ohura Beacon area thought he had a fire in his starboard engine. His flight position was 157° radial from Ohura Beacon. About 30 yards from the aircraft was a ball of intense bluish-white light, much like a welding arc, that was 20 to 20 feet in diameter, and stayed with his aircraft for about 20 to 25 sec.

The Automatic Direction Finding Compass, and both the gyroscopic compass and magnetic one, went haywire and spun at a speed of about 12 revolutions per minute. All directional equipment remained non-functional until he passed over the Wanganui area. The ADF needle rotating aimlessly, the magnetic compass screwed up (not reliable) and needles rotated several rpm for some times. The VOR stayed locked on the source. Feb. 4, 1973; Kimba, S. Australia
9:50 PM. A couple was driving on a rural highway and the driver noticed something that he couldn't make sense of, off to his right. He noted this to his lady friend and she saw it, too, but not quite as clearly. What they didn't know was that two other drivers, one just ahead of them and one coming by shortly later [10pm] saw the same thing. What was it? Summarizing the four witnesses reports, what was off in the nearby field was a "window of orange light".

The "window" [or would "doorway" be a better label?] was ten feet high and five feet wide and definitely rectangular.[i.e. it had a firm outline]. Within this lightform was a figure of a humanoid, bright white light in color, with no depth of dimension being seeable. [one must keep in mind that all the observers looked at this only briefly as they drove by].

The driver of the first-mentioned car described the figure as wearing a white "spacesuit" and floating in the middle of the light-doorway. His girlfriend got less of a view and described what she saw as a white blob inside an orange rectangle. The truck driver, who came afterwards, saw a orange-colored "caravan-doorway" without the caravan, and a white figure in the middle of it. The earlier driver said he saw a "glow of light, orange in color, rectangular in shape".

He didn't see a figure. When Keith Basterfield investigated the case shortly thereafter he and the constable, to whom all this had originally been reported, went to the location and could find no "entry" or "exit" tracks to indicate that any vehicles or whatever had been there. Basterfield, an excellent UFO researcher, was completely flummoxed by this unusual encounter, particularly given the independence of the witnesses, and the lack of any ground markings at the site. [Commentary (Michael Swords): this is a spectacular instance of a small set of incidents where the witnesses see not a craft, but what more seems like a "window" or a "doorway" through which something "elsewhere" is seen, or conceivably could come through.

Witnesses in these cases are often struck by the two-dimensionality of the space that they see as the boundary area, as if an opening had occurred in that location from another place. We, of course, don't know whether that interpretation makes sense, but it is a "simple" interpretation of what the witnesses say. (Mike Swords. Sources: Keith Basterfield. Evening. Six witnesses reported a close encounter with an object with a row of lights, hovering at 50' altitude. (Reggie Bone incident) (Rutledge, PID,6)

March 1, 1973; Saylors Lake, PA
There were 42 objects with flashing lights observed by multiple witnesses during a three-hour period. The sightings occurred over a small lake-side community located in eastern Pennsylvania, near the New Jersey border. At least a dozen witnesses, including a state trooper, observed the objects passing over the lake, with one witness counting 39 objects before the evening ended. Trooper Jeffery Hontz, sent to the town to investigate, said he observed four objects pass over the lake from west to east. "'But don't ask me what they were," he said, "it was like a Christmas tree flying in the air." The objects, he said were flying at an altitude of 1,500 feet. Most had white lights, said Hontz, but others had red or blue lights.


Mrs. Howard Pfeiffer said she and 11 other residents saw 39 objects -- some in groups pass over the lake at 15-minute intervals between 7:25 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. She said the round objects were about the size of a "child's wading pool". Mrs. Pfeiffer, one of the major witnesses, discounted the theory put forth by some that the objects were planes. "The first one came so close I felt I could reach up and touch it," she said. "There was no noise, no sparks, or anything. I know it wasn't any plane or balloon or helicopter." (Reference: UFO INVESTIGATOR, April 1973, page 1)

A major UFO "wave" apparently hit a three-county area of eastern Pennsylvania. Mostly round and oval lighted objects were reported. On March 20th Bushkill Township Police Chief Harold Kostenbader reportedly observed three objects himself. (Reference: UFO INVESTIGATOR, May 1973, pages 1, 4)

March 15, 1973; Milton, PA
Police reportedly were swamped with calls regarding a "giant ball" which moved quickly across the evening sky from east to west. According to one witness, the object looked like a lighted helicopter dome. At one point, he said, he observed the object make a 90-degree turn to avoid a crash with what appeared to be an airplane. As the evening progressed, several other Milton residents reported similar sightings, according to police. A spokesman at a local Air Force base, when asked about possible sighting reports, said no records were kept of such reports and local Air Force personnel were not on the alert for such sightings. March 22, 1973; Grand Tower, IL
9:15 p.m. Object approximately 1,500' high hovered over power plant. Witness estimated the object's size at 25' in diameter (250 yards away). He described the object as a ring of lighted panels or windows with definite spacing between windows, each emitting pulsating light varying from a dark red-to-orange-to-white sequenced in a clockwise rotation like a theater marquee. Witness said the object was doughnut-shaped, or more like a wedding band, since only the lighted panels were visible. (Newsclipping, SL66,7)

April 6, 1973; Charleston, MO
Mrs. Dorothy Thompson saw an egg-shaped object at treetop level after her TV set went off and on, and she saw a bright flash of light in her kitchen.

April 6, 1973; Ellsinore, MO
At 11:30 a.m. a domed disc-shaped object with portholes and landing gear came down and landed in the woods four miles west of Ellsinore, Missouri. At the landing site were found three holes in the ground arranged in a triangle pattern, and some damaged foliage. A woman driving along US highway 1 in southern Rhode Island saw a reddish-orange object move toward her car, then pass directly overhead. He car lights dimmed and the engine faltered. April 12, 1973: SE of Piedmont, MO
10:30 p.m. Orange ball of light observed from Cessna 150 at 2500'. OBOL (orange ball of light) appeared on slope of Clark's Mountain, disappeared when a/c turned toward it. Simultaneously identical light appeared to the right. When a/c banked again, the object shot straight up. (Rutledge) (PID,15)

April 15, 1973; Bt. Manor & Penn, PA
During the late afternoon on the road between Manor and Penn, Pennsylvania twelve witnesses saw a disc-shaped object, between 35-60 feet in diameter, that came within 70 meters of a car, causing the car's headlights to dim. During the night of April 15-16 more than a dozen witnesses reported observations of UFOs in the area of Penn and Manor, Pennsylvania, near the larger town of Jeanette. Among these was the report of a single witness who was driving near the Manor, Pennsylvania Power plant at 10:55 p.m. when he observed a large glowing object over the nearby railroad tracks.

It was just above the trees, and the light from the object illuminated the immediate area with an intense white color. The witness pulled over to the side of the road and got out for a better look. The object, no more than a hundred yards away, was about 400 yards west of the power plant and approximately 10 feet above the trees.

The object itself was completely illuminated but apparently solid in construction and about three car lengths in size. It had a dome like structure on top, which was the same bright color as the rest of the object. Around the main section were 2 or 3 rows of multi-colored lights, or square windows. One was whitish, the next red, and the third a blue or green hue. From the left side of the UFO a line or cord extended some 30 yards, and at the end of the cord floated a human form some eight to ten feet tall, similar to the "Apollo astronauts walking in space".

It was of a purple or orange color. The witness did not see the humanoid form retracted into the UFO; rather it disappeared like "a string of lights."


The witness had left his lights on and engine running when he got out of his vehicle, and he noticed that the headlights had dimmed to the strength of a weak flashlight. When the object departed, the headlights came back on as bright as before. The object made a high-pitched sound "like a spinning top" when it departed. Sheriffs and others on April 10 reported at least three UFOs over Bernie and in Dexter. Objects changed color from white to red to blue, moved irregularly across the sky, starting and stopping and changing speeds.

Four yellow lights as if one object, beside road, buzzed car; burn marks found where UFO first seen. (Ballester-Olmos, 1976, pp. 40-41 [E] car).

April 24, 1973; Spring Mills, PA
Local police reported that three adults apparently sober and not under the influence of any drugs, told them they observed an oval-shaped fluorescent-white UFO travel from the north, stop, and hover motionless over one of the witnesses' homes and then speed off in a northerly direction and then disappear. The object gave off a very bright white light which changed to blue and green, said one witness. (Reference: UFO INVESTIGATOR, August 1973, page 3)

April 29, 1973; Shamokin, PA
More than a dozen residents of the Ferndale sub-division told state police they observed a UFO with "flashing lights" land on on Burnside Mountain. One of the witnesses, a 13-year old boy, said he watched the object through binoculars and could see a "big bubble on it and I saw silver along with the lights." A number of adults reporting the sighting said the object hovered above the mountain for several moments before apparently landing. The UFO watchers said they saw the object take off around 11P.M. and head west. (Reference: UFO INVESTIGATOR, August 1973, page 3)

April 30, 1973; New South Wales, Australia
Four teenagers driving between Kinchela and Gladstone, New South Wales, Australia saw a bright yellow domed disc or domed-ovoid craft dive quickly toward the ground. They saw a glow from a field a mile from road that they presumed was the landing site. However, when they drove towards it, their vehicle's headlights blacked out. One of the few UFO encounter cases which also involved animal mutilation occurred in May, 1973, and involved four women. Judy Doraty, her daughter Cindy, Judy's mother and sister-in-law would have the most terrifying experience of their lives. 8:10 p.m. Row of seven lights observed for 45 seconds by Harley Rutledge and three other members of Project Identification team. (Project Identification, page 42)

May 12, 1973; Near Kent, OH
9:20 p.m. The witness was driving west on Route 76, near Kent, when he observed a group of flashing lights overhead, almost directly above the car. They moved along the highway with him until finally, out of curiosity, he stopped; so did the lights. Looking up through the windshield, at close to a 90 degree angle, he could see a football shaped object that flashed from red to blue to white, in a repeating cycle; as he watched, he saw a figure materialize approximately 10 feet below the object.

The figure was human in shaped, clad all in silver, and rapidly descended to the highway directly in front of the car; when it reached the pavement, the figure was standing rigidly in a position looking to the right, then turned its head to look directly into the windshield at the witness. After about a half a minute, the figure again ascended rapidly, "like a helium balloon," towards the object; disappearing before it reached it.

It was shaped exactly like a human, but was entirely silver in color, lacking hair and ears; eyes, a "Dutch" nose and narrow mouth, with small pointed chin, were observed by the witness. He was uncertain as to whether the silvery body was a close fitting garment or the actual skin color, for he saw what appeared to be the faint outline of a vein running down the inside of one of the figure's arms, which he held rigidly downward; on the feet he saw what appeared to be boots or shoes, with a heavy, distinct line between the sole and boot itself.


No line of demarcation could be seen between the shoe, or boot and the lower leg. The height of the figure was not much more than 2.5 feet; and it descended to a position approximately ten feet in front of the car. After the figure ascended, the object moved rapidly in a vertical ascent, rocking the car "as if a semi was passing it." (Humcat 1973-10; Source: Larry Moyers and Marc Candusso FSIC)

A man and his wife employed at the Fazenda Secap claimed to have seen an oval shaped flying craft, "with two figures like people, in big hats and linked together by a sort of tube." According to one newspaper, as many as six local residents claimed also to have seen the UFO. There were numerous other incidents in the area at the same time. 10:00 p.m. A large "unidentified flying object with an orange glow" was spotted over Pekin. Mrs. Charles Phillips said she and her family were in their car when they first noticed the object. They stopped the car and were able to see something over Edison Junior high school there appeared to be a dome which an orange light emanated and there was a pulsating motion evident. She said members of her family were not able to hear any sound from the object, which she guessed was about 90 feet up in the air. A round spinning UFO with red, green, blue and purple lights buzzed a car with three teenagers in Mount Gambier, South Australia at 7 p.m., terrifying them. <>2:00 a.m. Geni Lisboa was busily baking wedding cakes early in the morning when her attention was drawn outdoors by the squawking of her pet parakeet. When she looked out she saw a luminous flying object approaching her property. The object circled her garden and hovered above the wall. Ms. Lisboa, only a few meters distant, could see three identical looking figures of small stature through the transparent upper portion. They were behind a kind of "parapet" which hid them from the waist down.


Each one was directly a beam of light down as if searching for something. Then their beams simultaneously converged on the witness, immediately paralyzing her. Feeling some pain and dizziness, she was nevertheless able to call out for help to her neighbor, but the object departed before she was able to respond. When her neighbor arrived, she found Ms. Lisboa's face swollen and her eyes bloodshot. Her body was painful, particularly in the joints and especially in the knees, but she continued working until the pain returned and she was forced to call her neighbor again. Her physiological symptoms worsened and she was hospitalized for what the doctors labeled a prolapsed uterus.

She had had a gynecological test six months before and had been healthy. In addition to this, her eyesight worsened after the experience to the point where she was forced to wear corrective lenses for the first time in her life. Also, her previous medical condition of hypertension seemed to have made an improvement to the degree where she was able to drop all previous anti-hypertensive medication. (Source: David F. 9:30 p.m. Four people in a car were driving near Weston Lake when a bright floodlight-type light was pointed at them. The object was behind the witnesses and off to the right. They stopped their car and watched the object, described as a "flat-bottomed catfish-shaped" object, as it passed overhead and off to the right at 65-70 mph and about 100' up. June 2, 1973; Divernon, IL
2:15 to 2:30 a.m. The UFO had a series of bright running lights, much like one would see on any other aircraft. Suddenly, a large orange-red light was turned on beneath the UFO which lit up the entire landscape. The witness couldn't tell if it was from one source or several lights, but; it was all from toe same craft. He stopped and turned engine off, got| out and watched about ten or fifteen minutes.

"There wasn't a sound," he said. "And there was an airplane flying high overhead, which we heard. This was much closer, perhaps a thousand feet away, some 500' feet off the ground." The unusual item moved quickly to the north, then seemed to travel around the city of Springfield, to the east. (Courier, Jacksonville, IL, June 3)

June 14, 1973; Princeton, IL
UFOs were sighted by three young girls traveling Interstate 80, five 'miles west of Princeton at approximately 3:38 a.m. State Police District 7 in Rock Island reported. The girls, ages 18 and 19, from Albany, N.Y., and Bristolville, Ohio, told investigating troopers that they had seen a silver, gray and black flying object emitting a green mellow light.

The girls said that the object made several maneuvers in a rapid manner, and, prior to disappearing, two other objects were accompanying the first one. The girls said the object was flying in a southeast to northwest direction. Another traveler at the rest area, a Milwaukee man, allegedly photographed the objects with a high powered camera, but he had left the area before troopers arrived at the scene, troopers said. Domed disk making noise like aboriginal "bull-roarer" descends like "falling leaf or pendulum", and that morning a lady from Dundurrabin heard strange noises and weird "moonlight" through her window. Her clock was discovered to have stopped [though it wasn't electric]. She thought this was odd when her neighbors came to her house to inquire about the time since their clock had stopped too. June 20, 1973; Fort Wayne, IN
10:30 p.m. One resident reported seeing a large hovering aerial object described as round or pear-shaped with four or five red lights on top and bottom and a large white light atop. It was dome shaped at top and rounded at bottom with what appeared to be a partitioned frame within the window. Another resident said she saw the object while en route to a food market. For awhile it was above her auto at a height estimated at equivalent to a block or two. After moments it suddenly took off eastward at unbelievable speed, gradually disappearing. Lights on the object dimmed gradually before its departure. (SL-70, page 10)

June 23, 1973: Piedmont, MO
10:30 p.m. From a cabin on the Rothwell Ranch, two men watched as a bright light that had a ring around it rose from low on the ESE horizon, moved up-down, then left-right, for a distance of 15 degrees over a 30 minute period beginning at 10:30 p.m. The object silently radiated lines of concentric circles like heat waves. At 9:00 p.m. Mr. & Mrs. Sanders saw a cone-shaped UFO with multicolored lights at treetop level while driving on Route 51. The UFO made two circles over the highway, then headed off toward the south making a roaring sound. Their eyes were "foggy" for two days following their close encounter. (Source: John F. June 29, 1973; Bayview, ID
Thirteen UFOs, which appeared as "steady white lights," were reported over Lake Pend Oreille by a local family. According to one of the witnesses, the objects were in view for approximately one hour and were seen passing over the lake in all directions. They moved swiftly but emitted no apparent noise, according to the family. (Reference: UFO INVESTIGATOR, September 1973, page 3)

July, 1973; Kokkaido, Japan
Witness said light descended to an altitude of about 20 meters (75 feet) above the surface of the water and stopped, and then from the underside of the light came what appeared to be a glass-like transparent tube and when the leading edge of the tube touched the surface of the water, that part of the tube began to glow and appeared to be sucking up the bay water. Accompanying the projection of the tube to the water, was a sound which Kudou described to be like the sound of a cicada (insect) which emits sound like "min-min-min-min", but the sound accompanying the tube was not so monotonous and appeared to be lower in pitch.

Later, he could make out more detail and noted that it was as smooth and round as a ping-pong ball, and he could now see what appeared to be small windows around the center of the object. In the central one and in another window two windows to the right, he saw two "eerie, shadow-like figures" which he said were too small and deformed to be called the shadows of men". (A.P.R.O. July 6, 1973; Fairfield, IL
Four boys (ages 14-18) saw an illuminated object shaped like a "flat football" near Fairfield Airport about 10 p.m. as they were on the road to Miriam. Earlier, about 8:00 p.m. the same object was seen by two other boys near the Drive In Theatre and Fairfield Gun Club, as it passed over their car heading toward Geff. The boys located the sheriff and his deputy at the Regal 8 Inn at Fairfield and reported the sighting.

The men went outside to look, saw nothing, and made light of the boys' report. The two boys returned to the site where they had seen the object, spotted it again to the west and then followed it to Geff where it was then lost to view behind some trees. The boys said the object was football shaped, with red and white alternating lights around it and was the size of a half dollar held at arms length. (SL-70, page 10)

July 13, 1973; Emden, MO
3:30 a.m. Began with barking dog. The object was described as egg shaped or oblong, about the size of an average car. It had a 3-dimensional appearance, “..like you could look through it, or right into it." The outside was orange and toward the center it was brighter and a slightly different color. The colors were described as similar to setting sun but not dark enough to be considered red. The night was very quiet with no wind. (AR Case, Woodward)

July 16, 1973; Between Palamo and Playa de Oro, Spain
6:30 p.m. Miguel Romera Fernandez de Cordoba was flying a forest fire aircraft from Palamos to Playa de Oro at 3,000 feet altitude, and with a clear sky and a good visibility. Suddenly he saw a strange object which looked like a rugby ball cut on lower part. The object paced and maintained same position on the right of the aircraft for 10-12 minutes. The aircraft radio system failed during the sighting. The movement of the object gave to the pilot a sensation of fear. (Source: NARCAP Case 35, Dr Richard F. Haines Files) Table 1, 116,

Aug., 1973; Elizabethtown, KY
A news clipping mentioned that a 16-year-old boy had seen a UFO "shaped like a trapezoid, only rounded off on the bottom". This was early August and could have been at the same time as the other cases listed below, however many miles away.

Aug. 1973 (exact date unknown), Princeton, IN
9:00 p.m. Three persons hastily left a place in Illinois they had visited when a bad storm came up. While driving closer to home at Princeton, Indiana, they saw an object. As they got closer to it, before lightning struck, they saw what looked like clearance lights, one on each side of it. Later on it proved to be four, of whatever the light was, dotted around the "cupola".

The object was a classic disc with a straight up & down cupola, rather than the usual dome. And beneath it was a super-dark cone which apexes below the tree level. And this thing (the cone) didn't appear to be solid. The cone was sort of wide at the bottom of the saucer and evidently went to a point which would have been the opposite of a flashlight beam. Aug. 4, 1973; Greenup, IL
Bud Sedgwick had been cultivating beans southeast of Greenup until his wife and her parents Mr. and Mr. Delos Robbins drove to the fields to pick him up shortly after 8 o'clock, Saturday night, August 4th. They were on a country road east of Greenup going west, just south of the Penn Central Railroad tracks when, "All of a sudden there it was, it was coming at us sideways at treetop level," Sedgwick said. He slammed on the brakes and one of the women was thrown against the dashboard of the car.


The fast moving object was rectangular "and had the shape of a large boxcar," Sedgwick said. He described it as being "all the same color, a pale color." It wasn't overly brilliant and it didn't hurt their eyes to look at it. "It was right in front of us. We had a clear view, there was no guessing." He estimated the object to be about a half mile from them and he said it appeared to settle into a cornfield, with one end of the rectangle going down first, then the other end also disappearing from view. Aug. 4, 1973; Greenup, IL
Evening. Bill McMorris and his son were on their way home from an evening of fishing near Hidalgo, Ill. Coming north on Route 130 through the hollows south of Greenup they saw the object across the top of a farm house owned by Walter Gabel. "It was as big as a house," McMorris, publisher of the Greenup newspaper, said. It was at least three-fourths of a mile away and seemed to be coming down, he said. He lost sight of it when he went down into a dip in the road, and when he came up the other side of the hill, it was gone. He too said it was evenly illuminated, no one spot any brighter than any other. (SL-71, page 5)

Aug. 4, 1973; Greenup, IL
Patty Markwell, 13, was in her mother's car on the way to the Tastee Freeze when she saw the object. "I just saw the end of it over the trees," she said. "It was real bright, it looked like light bulbs. It looked like somebody had a string on it, and just pulled it down." Her mother, busy driving, couldn't take her eyes off the road when Patty called out there was something real bright in the sky, and she didn't see it. (SL-71, page 5)

Aug. 7, 1973; Tyringham, Australia
A huge light or luminous object manifested as a brilliant V or cone-shaped thing with a small orange "knob" on top. The big light was able to silhouette trees but not cast light on them. Aug. 9, 1973; Exeter, NH
A father and his son were driving along a main highway in the Exeter area when they saw a landed UFO alongside the highway. A humanoid was standing beside it. This was probably in the daytime. (Ref. 5)

Aug 10, 1973; Ibague, Colombia
Four grade-school students and a policeman saw four small humanoids beneath a bridge. The beings were only 20 cm tall and disappeared when the witnesses approached. "Traces" were left in mud and later photographed. (Ref. 5)

Aug.14, 1973; Traverse City, MI
A 19-year-old Lake Ann, Michigan, resident and his companion claim they observed a cylindrically-shaped object, about 50 feet in length, pass in front of their car around 10:30 p.m. near Boardman Lake off Cass Road. According to the couple, the object traveling in a north to south direction passed within 20 feet of the the vehicle and appeared to have approximately 10 lights located on the underside of the craft. The lights flashed on and off and appeared blue lights flashed on and off and appeared blue, pink, and green. The sighting lasted approximately eight seconds. Aug. 19, 1973; Reports Carried in Several Area Newspapers
The other reports that came in Sunday proved to be the most productive night for UFO sightings in the area. Over 200 persons reported seeing a UFO during the evening, according to Kid Jenson, a disc jockey at radio station WEIC in Charleston. "Most of the people who called were satisfied they really saw something," Jenson said, "And about 80 percent of the reports were almost identical in their descriptions of the UFO." (SL-71, page 5)

One report report came from a Charleston resident who said a UFO had landed "about 200 feet from my car in the country and then tried to get me on the way back to Charleston." (SL-71, page 5)

Aug. 23, 1973; Tyringham, Australia
A dull silver object passed overhead bringing [apparently] with it [though not immediately; this took "a few minutes"] an area of cold air, very localized and in a definite sensible volume. Later someone at the same location heard sounds for which they could not find a source [sounded like "a phantom truck"] and found a clock stopped. Later, the noise occurred again, and the witness checked the electric clock; the second hand "twittered a little from side to side, then stopped". (Mike Swords; Source: W.C.Chalker. Aug. 27, 1973; Greensburg, PA
On this night a woman reported seeing a large boomerang shaped craft hovering over a heavily wooded area in Beech Hill. When her husband went out to investigate he encountered a large hairy, biped creature with a wolf-like face. He shot at it with his gun with no apparent effect. (Source: Albert S. Aug. 30, 1973; S. GA
Midnight. Reports of unidentified flashing lights from a wide area of south Georgia were sent over the state-wide police communication network shortly after midnight and into the early morning of August 31. Military authorities in the area were notified. The duty officer at Robins AFB, Macon, said that the reports will be handled by the air police, "who make all investigations of UFO reports."... "The objects changed colors as they moved through the night, flashing blue, yellow, and green." (Chicago Daily News, Sat.-Sun., Sept. 1-2, 1973. Albany, Ga. [UPI].)

August 31-October 19, 1973: Flurry of Sightings
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Concentration of sightings in Deep South, witnessed by local and state police and many others. Fast-moving oblong objects with bright flashing or revolving lights. Those on August 31 in Georgia flashed blue, yellow and green. Others displayed red, green, orange, and white lights."


Concentration of Sightings In Spain Begins
A Department of Defense Intelligence Information Report (No. 6 889 0174 74) dated August 22, 1974, obtained by Jan L. Aldrich, indicates a concentration of sightings in Spain from September 1973 through the following June. The report is signed by Capt. Richard T. Fox, USN, Acting Defense Attaché in Madrid. A table lists 28 sightings.

2:00 a.m. Main features of case; disk craft observed at very close range. Witness tried three times to touch craft. Reached within a foot or so of its edge with his hand only to have it zip away. (Worley files/Ridge/MUFON Indiana)

Sept. 2, 1973; Milroy, IN
2:30 PM. Short term abduction. Dark green object observed in rear view mirror. Sped at auto and hovered at back window where it appeared to be a greyish illuminated object with transparent glass curved front. Two indistinct figures appeared on seats inside the window. Witness mesmerized and shown scenes on his rear window while traveling a short distance down highway. (Investigated for CUFOS. by Don Worley)

Sept. 2, 1973; Big Bear Lake, CA
11:00 p.m. Residents reported a series of sightings at night of unidentified objects with flashing lights. A hovering multi-colored object was observed, a red color predominating. Then it was seen to be a red disc, which began moving in various directions, then accelerated and sped away toward the north. (Big Bear News, Sept. 27, 1973)

Sept. 3, 1973; Athens, GA
Motorist driving home encountered egg-shaped object that descended onto road ahead of car. Two small beings emerged (UFOE II, Section XII).

Sept. 5, 1973; Morris, IL
11:30 p.m. 20-mins. Discoid object hovered over Northern Petro Chemical Company plant. Brief power failure reported. (SL-71, page 12)

Sept. 6, 1973; bt. Penong and Ivy Tanks, Australia
The witness was a passenger in a semi-trailer on Route 1 en route to Perth. She awoke to observe a brightly-lit egg-shaped object on the ground to the left of the road. Walking toward an open door was a normal-sized figure of human appearance; a second occupant was seen seated within the object, through a squarish window, looking upward at something in the vehicle. As the truck passed, the light rapidly faded until, by the time she got the driver to stop, only a single white light was visible. She said she had been awakened by a "voice" just prior to her observation. First: hand investigation. (Ref. 5)

Sept. 8, 1973; Hunter Army Air Field, GA
"Saucer-shaped" object with flashing bright red and white lights dove at MP patrol vehicle (Bart J. Burns and Randy Shade, occupants) repeatedly and chased it at high speeds (UFOE II, Section II).

Sept. 8, 1973; Savannah, GA
A Savannah police officer who had been sent to investigate citizens' reports of a UFO a few hours after the Hunter Army Air Field incident reported a personal sighting. He saw a large circular craft something like a flying saucer. [It had] a large spotlight which changed color from red to green [and smaller blue flashing lights.] Marcus Holland, a Savannah newspaper reporter said that about 30 minutes before the military police sighting, he saw an object speeding toward the Air Field. "Ten big, black hairy dogs" emerged from a landed UFO in Laurel Grove Cemetery and ran through the cemetery. The UFO turned out its lights after landing. Several youths made the report. (Ref. 5)

"Bright, circular, with two hoops, appeared to have feet on bottom part. Emitted a very powerful light." Object was hovering; multiple witnesses. (UFOE II, Section VIII)

Sept. 12, 1973; Long Barn (vicinity of Sonora), CA
Two motorists in the early morning observed a "silverish-yellowish orange disc" hovering silently over a canyon on the south side of Highway 108. Several other sightings in the vicinity September 12-17. (The Daily Union Democrat, Sonora, Calif., Sept. 18, 1973.)

Sept. 13, 1973; Gravatay, Brazil
While driving toward Ijui about 1:30 a.m., a group of motorists saw a luminous yellow egg-shaped object approach their car and begin pacing them to the left side apparently 2-3 km away. When the driver blinked the headlights off and on, the object "reproduced the same signals."


The driver and some passengers then stopped the car and got out, waving their arms. The object was very close to the ground and appeared to be about to land. They resumed their trip and after a while the object, which continued to pace them, beamed a light in the direction of the car. Originally, the RAND Corporation, a high level research group that had nothing to do with the business-machine firms and one of the most unpublicized yet highly competent contractors to the Air Force, stated in a letter dated June 25, 1969 that they were unable to identify any RAND publication on UFOs "available for external distribution."

Then, in another letter dated August 8th, 1969 RAND stated, "RAND has done very little on the subject of UFOs: therefore, no publications have been written on the subject."

I also have a copy of a letter dated October ? 1969 from the Department of the Air Force, to Mr. William Laub, of Northfield, Illinois. The letter was written by Lt. Col. James H. Aikman, Chief, Civil Branch, Community Relations Division, Office of Information. It states, "The Rand Corporation has never made any reports on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) for the United States Air Force. If any reports were made by this corporation they were made on their own."

RAND finally had to admit the existence of this paper and later stated that it was originally produced as an internal document and not prepared for or delivered to any of RAND's clients. RAND decided to make this paper available to the public if they asked for it.

This document, which crops up for discussion every once in a while, is placed here, with commentary at the end of this page, for the record. In regard to the commentary I have made a request to CUFOS (Nov. 2006) to locate a copy of a letter from George Kocher to Dr. J. Allen Hynek to document the contents mentioned by Jan Aldrich and confirm the date of same.

Common sense is the quintessence of the experiences and prejudices of its time. It is a most unreliable advisor when one is confronted with a perfectly new situation. Gustav Naan

UFOs -- unidentified flying objects, or flying saucers as they are often called -- have been on the mind of the public for at least the last 22 years. For a number of reasons, we know little more about them now than we did at the outset. There exists a great amount of misinformation about the phenomenon not only in the minds of the public, but among educated groups such as scientists as well. It is the purpose of this series of essays to describe various aspects of the phenomenon, make clear my prejudices and the reasons for them, and to suggest a means of proceeding on this interesting and potentially very significant problem.

But first, a few words about the term UFO. J. A. Hynek, an astronomer having continuous involvement with UFO study for over 20 years, defines UFOs as "any reported aerial or surface visual sighting or radar return which remains unexplained by conventional means even after examination by competent persons. This definition ... specifies neither flying nor objects." (1) I would agree, but would prefer to replace "or radar return" with "or instrumental observation" and "even after examination by competent persons" to "even after competent examination by qualified persons." This, then, is the definition I have adopted in the five essays that follow.

PART 1: UFOs -- HISTORICAL ASPECTS

Those familiar with the UFO literature are aware that reports of sightings did not begin with Arnold's sighting in 1947, but that phenomenology much the same as is reported today can be found in documents going back to the earliest times. Vallee (2) gives a sampling of this; B.L.P. Trench (3) has made a more thorough study and reports on the research of others able to study the original documents.

What was reported? Luminous discs, shields, globes and elongated objects in the sky, sometimes alone, sometimes in large numbers. Occasional descriptions of interactions with the observers are also mentioned, including landings, and seeing and communicating with occupants. The latter events especially were almost always interpreted in a religious context. A recent example is the repeated appearance of a typical UFO phenomenology at Fatima, Portugal on six successive months in 1917.


The October 13 phenomenon was the best reported and was witnessed by a crowd of about 70,000 persons, including a number of scientists, reporters, atheists, and agnostics, as wel as faithful Catholics. One of the scientifically curious was Dr. A Garrett of the University of Coimbra. Rain, which had been falling that day, ceased and the crowd looked up to see the "sun" now visible through the heavy clouds. Professor Garrett wrote, "...I turned toward this (sun) which was attracting all eyes and I could see it like a disk with a clear cut edge, with a vivid rim, luminous and shining, but without hurting one. The comparison I have heard at Fatima with a disk of dull silver, does

not seem to me exact. It was a clearer, more vivid, richer color and with shifting tints like the luster of a pearl. It was not at all like the moon on a clear transparent night, for one saw and felt it like a living star. Nor was it spherical like the moon, nor did it have the same quality of lighter and less light. It looked like a burnished wheel cut out of mother-of-pearl. Nor could it be confused with the sun seen through a fog -- there was no fog... This disc spun dizzily round. It was not the twinkling of a star: it whirled round upon itself with mad rapidity...

The sun, preserving the celerity of its rotation, detached itself from the firmament and advanced, blood-red, towards the earth, threatening to crush us with the weight of its vast and fiery mass. These moments made a terrifying impression." (4) The relationship of the old phenomenology to religion are discussed by Thomas. (5)

An example of earlier celestial displays of interest is illustrated in Figs 1 and 2. These are broadsheets from Nuremberg (1561) and Basel (1566), respectively. The psychologist, C. G. Jung; provides an analysis of the contents of the woodcuts in his interesting book. (6) Reference 7 has a very interesting reproduction of a fourteenth century fresco in a Yugoslavian church.

The modern period of the phenomenon began with a widely publicized sighting made by Kenneth Arnold in Washington state in 1947. A study by Bloecher of North American reports over the four week period bracketing the Arnold sighting lists 853 events, including 38 sightings made before Arnold's heavily publicized Sighting. (8)

Because the early reports seemed to suggest airborne craft of unusual appearance and kinematics, the problem came to rest with the newly organized U.S. Air Force. Initial fears were that the country was being over flown by advanced foreign aircraft, possibly on intelligence missions. The latter was suggested by the large number of sightings from the White Sands, New Mexico area and from the vicinity of the Hanford, Washington atomic plant.

Serious inquiry proceeded for a few years without any positive results. A number of supposedly knowledgeable people spoke out pointing out the sporadic nature of the sightings, and that since the reported

kinematics were inconsistent with current physical theory, the UFOs were not likely to be from a foreign power. Further, they argued, no other planets in our solar system were believed to support life -- certainly not intelligent life -- and since even the nearest star was over four light years away, the hypothesis of extraterrestrial origin was simply unacceptable from a scientific point of view. (9)

The Air Force investigative effort worked as follows: (10) Whenever a sighting was made, a report was to be made out and turned in to the Air Force at base level. The report was forwarded to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio for study. If the report was interesting enough, follow up inquiry was made. By 1952 the number of reports coming in was so large that the CIA was concerned that an actual attack on the country might not be immediately recognized.

A panel of scientists was then convened in January 1953 to study the available evidence and see what conclusion could be reached about UFOs. After seven days of hearing evidence and discussing the matter it was concluded that there was only circumstantial evidence of the extraterrestrial hypothesis. The panel recommended a broadened study effort with full disclosure of investigations. In order to unplug the military intelligence channels, however, the CIA recommended that, since the UFOs apparently posed no threat, the Air Force should debunk UFO reports and try generally to discourage public interest in them, in the hope that they would go away. (11)

It was the CIA's recommendation, apparently, that was made policy, for the investigative procedures used since 1953 have been vestigial and the handling of the subject by the authorities tended to make witnesses look ridiculous. In spite of the unfavorable publicity accorded witnesses, reports persisted, and no doubt in response to official behavior several civilian study groups were formed to receive reports and investigate sightings.

The most successful of these groups is the National Investigation Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). NICAP's membership is well dispersed geographically and acts to learn as much as possible from sightings. The large number of scientific and technical personnel in the NICAP membership aids the quality of their evaluations. A summary of characteristics of the UFO phenomenology published by NICAP

in 1964 (12) contains 575 reports that were extensively checked by NICAP for accuracy.

A series of sightings in 1965 and 1966 received considerable public attention arid after the poor public reception given the official explanations, the Air Force felt compelled to contract for a 15 month (later stretched to l8 months) scientific study to be performed at the University of Colorado under the leadership of E. U. Condon, a highly respected physicist. The Condon Committee is due to complete investigations at the end of June 1968;

its report will be reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences (presumably to validate that the study was indeed the objective pearl of the scientific method that was desired), and is expected to be made public in October 1968. Unfortunately, the dismissal of two members of the Committee in February 1968 resulted in publicity suggesting that the study was not, in fact, objective. It remains, therefore, to see the final report to determine the worth of the study.

In the meantime, the respectability accorded UFOs by the $500,000 study contract permitted a considerable amount of scientific interest to surface. Astronomer Hynek has made a number of public statements on the basis of his long involvement as a consultant to the Air Force; atmospheric physicist James F. McDonald has turned his attention full time to the subject, and a number of scientific and technical journals have printed some dialogue - notably Science, the AIAA Journal, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and the Journal of the Astronautical Sciences. It is also noteworthy that the University of Toronto has recently formed a UFO study group.

Even the Soviets, who previously refused even to discuss the subject now admit to having a study group with good qualifications. The USSR Academy of Sciences still holds to the orthodox scientific view that UFOs are a nonproblem, however, using the same arguments we heard so long. These arguments are just as invalid in the USSR as in the USA.

It therefore appears that the subject is slowly and finally being regarded as a fit subject of scientific inquiry. It is hoped that enough scientists will acquaint themselves with the subject so that progress can finally be made.

PART 2: UFOs -- ASTRONOMICAL ASPECTS

The astonishing thing would be if they did not exist.

We saw in Part 1 that the historical aspects suggest an extraterrestrial explanation to UFOs. While it has not been established that the contemporary phenomena are extensions of the historical, there does seem to be a continuity in the descriptions of the phenomena described. We shall therefore look at contemporary astronomical knowledge and theories and ascertain the likelihood of the existence of other highly developed life forms.


To begin with, the observable universe -- that is, the distance to which we can observe luminous objects -- is several billion light years in radius (a light year is the distance light travels in a year at a rate of 186,300 miles per second. The sun is 8 light minutes from the earth. The next-nearest star is 4.2 light years away). Within this vast volume we find hundreds of millions of galaxies. Our own (Milky Way) galaxy is similar to many of those we see at great distances. It is a lens-shaped assemblage of some 100 billion stars having a diameter of about 100,000 light years.

The sun is but one of its component stars and lies about 30,000 light years from the center, close to the plane of symmetry.

Now let us just consider the stars in our own galaxy -- specifically excluding those in neighboring or distant galaxies. We would like to estimate the number of stars having planets roughly similar to the Earth. From the statistics of stars within 15 light years of the sun we find that only about one-third are single, the rest binary or multiple. Since planetary orbits are often unstable in multiple systems (depending on the details of the configuration) we will say that only 30 billion stars in our galaxy now have a dynamical environment that permits planets to exist around them.

Will these stars have planets? We cannot state with assurance that they will; however, current knowledge supports the theory that planetary formation is a natural adjunct to formation of the star itself from the interstellar gas cloud.

We would therefore expect about 30 billion stars to have one or more planets. Now, we can reject certain classes of stars as candidates or habitable planets, because their lifetimes are too short (these are stars of high mass). Others can be rejected because of variability in light output, a characteristic that would make evolutionary development of life much more difficult. In fact if we select only those stars similar to the sun (whose peak of radiation energy coincides with a region of terrestrial atmospheric transparency) we have only a few percent of the total -- about one in 30.


Therefore, we would expect about 1000 million suitable solar type stars exist. Of these, it is estimated by various astronomers that 200-600 million have planets at about the right distance and have been around long enough that life forms as developed as our own could exist. Implicit in further discussion are the assumptions that:

1. Planets and/or life evolves to a mutual compatibility;

2. The life force, whether spontaneous or otherwise, is such that whenever the environment is favorable, life will exist;

3. Our own history of past evolution and development is neither slow nor fast, but average and typical for life forms. (Ours is the only example available and no one has yet demonstrated that the "average" galactic life form should be any different.)


Now let us turn momentarily to time scales. The sun and earth are on the order of 5 billion years old. We might define modern man as being about 5000 years old (Stonehenge is 4000 years old) -- just one millionth of the earth's age. The age of science is certainly not more than 500 years, so our scientific and technical development has thus far occupied only one ten-millionth of the earth's life span. We expect the sun will burn another 5 billion years before significant changes in its brightness occur.

Now the age of the galaxy is between 5 and 10 billion years; therefore among the 200-600 million stars we would expect to have acceptable planets, some would be older than the sun, some younger (for star formation is still continuing, even though at a lesser rate than in the galaxy's early history) and some the same age. It should be clear from assumption (3) and the example of our own

development, that among the populated planets those younger than the sun would be peopled by beings very much behind us technologically, while those on older planets would be extraordinarily advanced (remember our progress of 500 years and note that some planets could be as much as a few billion years older). Indeed, we would be surprised to find someone else at just our stage of technological development. For the purposes of this paper, we can ignore both the multitude younger than ourselves and those at our point of development.


Even so, we are left with the possibility of 100,000,000 planets in the galaxy having life forms very much advanced from us. (This number would be reduced significantly if life forms destroyed themselves soon after reaching our age of development. This is a philosophical point on which I am optimistic -- I believe the majority of races will learn to survive.) If these stars are uniformly distributed in the galactic disk, the average separation will be about 10 light years.

The usual scientist's reaction at this point is, well, even if the assumptions are correct and this number of advanced civilizations does exist, contact is still impossible because of the speed of light limitation of the theory of relativity. An excellent example of this kind of reasoning can be found in Ref. 14. My reply is that such a statement would appear to be shortsighted. For the moment, let us ignore the possibilities of overcoming the long time of travel by suspended animation and the like. Recall that our own physical theory has been developed in only 500 years. What can we expect in the next 500? Or 1000 or million or even billion years?


I suggest that _if_ a way to circumvent the speed of light restriction is possible, it has already been found by someone in our galaxy. (I haven't the faintest idea how this might be done and I fully agree that our own experimental data appear to accurately confirm the existence of this limitation.) If it has been discovered by one, we certainly would expect it to be used; if no other planet's inhabitants independently discovered the means, it makes little difference for such a thing could be taught by the discoverer. Thus we may conclude that it is very likely that at least one, and probably many of the 100 million advanced planetary populations is capable of interstellar travel.

The next question is, of course, have any of them been here? That question cannot yet be answered definitively. Without knowing what kind of phenomenology extraterrestrial visitors might exhibit, I will fall back on my scientific, mechanistic attitudes and say it makes sense to look for some kind of vehicle or spaceship. It appears that the class of phenomenology called UFO reports may contain, as a subset, actual observations of such craft. We shall now turn to the reports to see when and where things are seen and by whom and what phenomenology, if any) is revealed by the reports.

(Further information about the astronomical and biological possibilities are in Ref. 15, whose principal defects are (1) the authors uninformed rejection of UFO phenomenology as being relevant to the subject under discussion, and (2) their meek acceptance of the speed-of-light restriction as a universal truth. References 16 and 17 provide more detailed and more technical discussions of some aspects of the problem.)

PART 3: UFOs -- THE CHARACTER OF REPORTS

Any collection of reports of unknown aerial sightings by the public will include a large percent of noise - sightings of something explainable. The reports are made because the appearance falls outside the range of the observer's experience, and the observer believes it is sufficiently anomalous to warrant the attention of authorities. Thus, any large collection of reports will include descriptions of aircraft, balloons) spacecraft, astronomical objects, atmospheric effects and the like. Often the practiced and perceptive analyst can recognize the stimulus, particularly if he has access to records of aircraft, balloon, and satellite movements, meteorological data and astronomical phenomenology.

Recognition of stimulus is aided by a high quality report which is as quantitative as possible and which shows the observer to be able to differentiate between observation and interpretation. Of course a number of reports will be so lacking in details that no conclusion can be reached about what was seen. These are of little use; they may, however, serve as corroborating evidence to another, higher quality, report and should not, therefore be rejected. The really interesting class of reports is that reporting phenomenology which is clearly extraordinary.

The observer's qualifications may be such that the report is not only highly credible but is articulate and quantitative as well. It is this subclass of reports, variously estimated at 5 to 20 percent of the total, that offer hope of our learning what is going on.

Hynek considers two parameters of reports) credibility and strangeness, and suggests that the investigator really needs only to be concerned with reports having high strangeness and high credibility. The physical scientist is in a position to evaluate strangeness, the social scientist should be able to provide some measure of credibility.

Hynek also comments on a number of beliefs about UFOs and reports stating, (18) among other things, that most reports are made by people who previously never gave much thought to UFOs; that reports are not always vague; and that well educated, well trained, reliable, stable people also contribute reports. These conclusions have been reached by most people who have taken the trouble to collect and investigate reports first hand.

To illustrate the character of reports, I will quote several narratives from the literature. (Narratives, of course, are just the beginning of any report. Quantitative information, usually not given in the narrative must be obtained by careful interview of the witness.) The first is taken from a collection of 160 reports by Olsen. (19) It was originally made to NICAP.

Date: 24 April 1962
Place: Springfield (Delaware County), Pennsylvania
First witness, J. A. Gasslein, Jr. (Lt. Colonel, USAR Ret.) reports: "Time: Approximately 1945 hours, weather: clear, cloudless, medium blue sky, visibility good.


"My wife was driving her mother home following the latter's visit to our home. They had driven around the block to higher ground when my wife's mother looked out the car window and saw a large object. It was moving slowly and silently in an east-to-west direction at not over 50 ft. above street level. (Determined by the proximity to and relationship to the size of the Cape-Cod-type bungalows over which the object was passing.) My wife then plainly saw the object herself.

"Anxious to have me see the object, my wife quickly drove the car back to our house and attracted my attention. I had been working in the basement. I ran out of the house and up the street for a view. by the time I saw it, the object appeared to be about a quarter to a half-mile away, moving in a westerly direction. I saw it as an object smaller at the top than at the base, seemingly suspended in the air at an angle of about 45 degrees from my position, and giving off colored lights. I know that the object was not any kind of conventional aircraft of balloon.

"Having had the advantage of a closer viewing than I, my wife describes the object as follows..

" 'The UFO appeared to be about the size of one of the Cape Cod houses over which it passed, which would make it approximately 30 ft. in diameter and about the same dimension in height. It was circular, surmounted by a dome giving off flashes of green light. The center section rotated a series of square shaped "windows", each giving off a brilliant white light. The base section was somewhat saucer-shaped,

curved upward. Shafts of white light were directed downward from the base.' Unfortunately, my wife cannot recall if the exterior was metallic in appearance. In any event, the object had a well-defined outline. Again, it moved silently. There was no evidence of occupants of the UFO.

"Approximately 20 to 25 minutes following the first sighting described above, the following sighting occurred: "Returning from taking her mother home, my wife drove the car into our driveway alongside the house, headed westward. In the rear of our home was a wooded park area. My wife walked down the driveway to enter the house. Coming up the driveway was a neighbor friend, a young lady 20 years of age.

In a tone of astonishment, she called my wife's attention to the park area, from which was emerging an object of the same description as outlined above moving easterly at low level -- not over 50 ft. above ground level, as judged by the trees in the area -- the UFO proceeded relatively slowly and without sound. It was approaching the rear of our home and adjacent properties.

"Again, my wife called me from the basement. By the time I got outside, the object had made a 90 degree turn northward and was proceeding parallel to the backs of the houses in the same line as ours. It was perhaps 150 - 200 yards distant. My observation of the characteristics of the UFO tallied with my wife's and the young lady's.

Each of them independently made a pencil sketch within a few minutes after the sighting, and the sketches were substantially alike. "All told, there were at least 15 persons in the vicinity who acknowledged seeing the object at about the same time as the sightings made by my wife and myself."

Another witness, P. T. Scattergood, reports: "Around 8 (p.m.) I stepped out the front door, facing south and saw a brilliantly lighted object low in the southern sky. At first I took it to be a jet taking off from Philadelphia Airport, which is in that general direction. But I could hear no engine noise and it was traveling too slowly to be a plane. Also it did not have the usual blinking lights.

"It appeared to have a row of yellowish lights (which I took for the windows of the "jet") with a clear green light at the top. As I

watched, the row of lights appeared to be obscured as though a large paddle-wheel were revolving and blotting them out, beginning with the rear lights and proceeding forward. Since the object was moving west, I saw the right hand side of it. The periodic appearance and disappearance of the lights was perfectly regular. The top green light was constantly visible. I stood on the pavement and watched the object sail leisurely to the west until it disappeared behind some trees. The observation probably lasted from 5 to 10 minutes."

This report has the desirable features of the UFO being seen by a number of people (about 15) of which two actually made reports. (Hynek estimates the number of sightings to be about 10 times the number of reports turned in) . Other desirable aspects of this sighting are that it was made during daylight; that it was near enough that some details of its configuration were observable; and, it was visible long enough to allow the observers to consider "explanations" as they watched it.

The second example is reported by James F. McDonald in T. Bloecher's book on an intense period of UFO activity in 1947. The report was made 20 years after the sighting to Prof. McDonald for the reasons given at the end of the quotation.

"Mrs. Olavick was in her kitchen at 2101 East Hawthorne Street, Tucson, while Mrs. Down was out in the back-year patio. Suddenly Mrs. Down called her out excitedly, and both proceeded to observe what had caught Mrs. Down's eye. The time was just after the noon hour; Tucson's skies were completely cloudless. Somewhat north of their zenith lay an unusual, isolated, "steamy-fleecy" cloud at an altitude which Mrs. Olavick found difficult to estimate, though she recalled that it seemed lower than average for that time of year (thus, perhaps at or below 10,000 feet, say.).

No other cloud was to be seen in the sky. In and out of the cloud moved a number of dull-white disc-like objects that rose and fell in an erratic manner, occasionally disappearing into or above the unnatural cloud. She said that these objects were round in planform but were not spherical, for they frequently tipped a bit, exposing a flattened-sphere form. She estimates that they watched these objects cavorting near the cloud for perhaps five or six minutes before the entire group suddenly disappeared within the cloud or perhaps above it.

"After a minute or so, as she now recalls it, a new object, perhaps three of four times as large as the little objects, came out of the cloud on its east side. After it emerged, the small objects began to emerge also, taking up a V-formation pattern behind it. The V comprised a line of four-abreast just to the rear of the large object, then a line of three-abreast behind that, and finally two-abreast in the rear. Thus the point of the V was to the rear (in the sense of the emergent and subsequent motion).

This formation permitted the first accurate count of the small objects, nine in all. No sooner had the last pair emerged than all ten objects shot off to the northeast, climbing out of sight in a time that she thought was probably two to three seconds. She does not recall what happened to the cloud after the ten objects departed.

"I (McDonald) have spoken with Mrs. Olavick several additional times, following her first call. Her account was presented in an unembellished manner, and her descriptions were carefully framed, specifying just which parts had become less distinct in her memory. But the basic vividness of her memory of this observation she stressed repeatedly. I had to explain that it was by no means clear that the objects she saw were identical with those reported by Kenneth Arnold two months later.

When I queried her as to why she had not reported them, she pointed out that she and Mrs. Down were entirely convinced that they had been fortunate enough to witness some new American military vehicles about which the general public had not yet been informed. Later she heard of the "flying saucers," and she and Mrs. Down, when they rejoined their husbands in mid-summer in Iowa, told them about their own observation. The husbands, she recalled, made such a joke of it that they ceased mentioning it.

Again we have a daytime sighting of several minutes duration, with two witnesses. As is often the case when.the phenomenon appears mechanical, it was interpreted as some secret government development. Ridicule of the sighting by family members and friends (if not by authorities) is frequently mentioned as a reason for delayed reporting of sightings.

A third report is taken from a paper Prof. McDonald presented at the 12 March 1968 Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute Astronautics Symposium, Montreal.

"At about 5:15 am., PDT, on the morning of July 4, 1967, at least five witnesses (and reportedly others not yet locatable) saw an object of unconventional nature moving over Highway 5 on the edge of Corning, California. Hearing of the event from NICAP, I began searching for the witnesses and eventually telephone-interviewed four. Press accounts from the Corning Daily Observer and Oakland Tribune afforded further corroboration.

"Jay Munger, operator of an all-night bowling alley, was drinking coffee with two police officers, James Overton of the Corning force and Frank Rakes of the Orland force, when Munger suddenly spotted the object out the front windows of his bowling alley. In a moment all three were outside observing what they each described as a dark gray oval or disc-shaped object with a bright light shining upwards on its top and a dimmer light shining downward from the underside.

A dark gray or black band encircled the mid-section of the object. When first sighted, it lay almost due west, at a distance that they estimated at a quarter of a mile (later substantiated by independent witnesses viewing it at right angles to the line of sight of the trio at the bowling alley). It was barely moving, and seemed to be only a few hundred feet above terrain. The dawn light illuminated the object, but not so brightly as to obscure the two lights on top and bottom, they stated.

"Munger, thinking to get an independent observation from a different part of Corning, returned almost immediately to telephone his wife; but she never saw it for reasons of tree-obscuration. At my request, Munger re-enacted the telephoning process to form a rough estimate of elapsed time. He obtained a time of 1-1.5 minutes.

This time is of interest because, when he completed the call and rejoined Overton and Rakes, the object had still moved only a short distance south on Highway 5 (about a quarter of a mile: perhaps), but then quickly accelerated and passed off to the south, going out of their sight in only about 10 seconds, far to their south.

Paul Heideman, of Fremont, California, was driving south on Highway 5 at the time of the above sighting, along with a friend, Robert King. I located Heideman and obtained from him an account of his observation made from a point on the highway north of Corning. He saw the light from the object, and had veered east (a turn not seen from the more restricted viewing point of the bowling-alley parking lot). Heideman said that, when first seen, it lay almost straight down Highway 5, serving to check the estimate of the other observers that the object lay only a few city blocks to their west.

The weather was clear, no haze, no wind, according to the witnesses. Munger's concise comment was "I've never seen anything like it before." He estimated its "diameter" at perhaps 50-100 ft, and its vertical thickness as perhaps 15-20 ft, with some kind of edge (band) perhaps 5-10 ft thick. No sound was ever heard. Overton stated to me that he had no idea what it was, but that "there was no doubt it was a craft of some sort."

The next example is from a report I personally investigated. It occurred in the area where I was reared; the observers are known to my family; I am familiar with the natural phenomenology of the area.

Date: 10 October 1966
Place: Near Newton, Illinois
First witnesses: Mrs. A (she prefers not to be publicly identified because of the reaction of friends and neighbors). Time: 5:20 p.m.


"Mrs. A was in her kitchen preparing supper; five of her children were playing outdoors. The children shouted to her to "come out and see the silent plane". She writes "I glanced out the south window and there it was coming into sight just south of our 72 foot silo moving very slowly from east to west. It was about 35 feet high. My first thought was that it was a plane making an emergency landing, but when I saw it in full view, I knew it was no plane, not like anything I have ever seen. I hurried outside to join the children in the yard. It

continued to move in a straight line to the west. We could see it clearly as it drifted over a 50 by 100 foot machine shed being built at the time [the workers were, however, in the fields this day]. It appeared to be larger than our car, and was more oval. There was a bluish glow around the ends, top, and bottom of it. It (the glow) wasn't bright, since it was daylight yet, but more like a low cloud, haze, or fog; or a mixture of bluish-grey tiny bubbles floating along around it. The object was seen clearly. It was blue in color and appeared to be made of metal. You could see [longitudinal] seam lines. There was one black window.


I thought they (assuming someone was in it) could see out but we could not see them. I kept looking for someone to peep out and wave, but don't recall seeing or feeling anything at the time. There was a brownish-gold design on the lower back half. A raised part was on the top near the back which was noticed by all the children. It moved very quietly, making no sound at all except for a whirling or vibrating sound for 1 or 2 seconds as it drifted on toward the west... We followed it down the yard and lane, continuing to watch it as it was 300 feet, then 200 feet from the north and south gravel road and the REA electric line which is on the west side of the road.


We were talking together, all very excited about what it was, where it came from, if there were people in it, and if it would rise to clear the electric line. It did; it rose so quickly and was out of sight in just a few seconds. Our eyes could not follow it fast enough. This was certainly a fantastic thing."

The questionnaire, a lengthy correspondence, an interview in June 1967 and other checking produced the following details:

Features: Theodolite tracking, high-speed maneuvering object. At 10:20 a.m. on a very clear day Charles B. Moore, Jr, a General Mills Company aerologist and four technicians were preparing to launch a Skyhook balloon and were tracking a small weather balloon, when they suddenly noticed a whitish object rapidly crossing the sky.

They turned their theodolite, with 25-power telescope, onto the object and saw that it was a featureless ellipse, its length about 2-1/2 times its width. After about 60 seconds, the object "disappeared in a sharp climb!" According to Ruppelt, the UFO at one point passed in front of a range of mountains. From azimuth, elevation, and timing data the object's speed was calculated to be between 18,000 and 25,000 m.p.h.



Navy Officer Tells HOW SCIENTISTS TRACKED A FLYING SAUCER;

In its January issue TRUE said that the flying saucers are real and interplanetary. Its story was widely supported by the nation's press and radio. TRUE's findings are here confirmed by Commander McLaughlin, a rocket expert at White Sands Proving Ground, who worked independently of this magazine's investigation. He reveals how a troup of Navy men and scientists tracked a flying disk with a precision instrument and tells of flights he and others witnessed.


On a bright, clear Sunday morning in April, 1949, a detachment of Navy men and a group of scientists released a balloon from a point 57 miles northwest of the White Sands Proving Ground base.

They were interested in getting weather data from the upper atmosphere, and as the balloon rose, they charted its flight as usual with a theodolite and a stop watch. There were five observers in all; four of them coordinating the instrument data. One followed the balloon through the theodolite's telescope. One called off the readings. One recorded them, and the fourth man held the watch.

Shortly after the balloon was aloft west of the observation point, the theodolite operator swung his instrument rapidly to the east.

A strange object, seen by everyone present, had crossed the path of the balloon. The instrument man, confused, had followed it. Swiftly, one of the scientists grabbed the theodolite and began tracking the missile.

An accurate plot of the object's course was recorded. Analyzing this data later, I can state definitely that:

1. The object, viewed in cross section, was elliptical in shape.

2. It was about 105 feet in diameter.

3. It was flying at an altitude of approximately 56 miles. (This was determined by a ballistics expert. An object at a lower altitude on this particular bright day could not have fitted the data taken. For security reasons, I cannot go deeper into this method of calculating altitude.)

4. Its speed was about 5 miles per second.

5. At the end of its trajectory, it swerved abruptly upward, altering its angle of elevation by 5 degrees -- corresponding to an increase in altitude of about 25 miles -- in a period of 10 seconds. Rough calculation indicates that a force of more that 20 G's (20 times the pull of gravity) would be required to produce this elevation in this time.

6. The object was visible for 60 seconds.

7. It disappeared at an elevation of 29 degrees.

Close questioning of the observers prior to the official report that went to "Project Saucer" at Wright-Patterson Field in Dayton, Ohio, produced an almost unanimous judgment that the objects was discus shaped and that it was a flat white color. High powered binoculars showed no exhaust trail, no stream of light or other evidence of a propulsions system. And, no sound. What was it?

I am convinced that it was a flying saucer and, further, that these disks are space ships from another planet, operated by animate, intelligent beings.

I think it is safe to say that it wasn't any type of aircraft known on Earth today. Even if, as is likely, there are top secret models which you and I know nothing about, there is no human being in this world who could take a force of 20 G's and live to tell about it.

I doubt that it was meteor. These small bullets from space frequently light up our sky as they burn, from friction generated by hurtling through our atmosphere. But only occasionally are they visible in the daytime. And besides, meteors remain in view for only a few seconds -- 10 or 12 at the maximum. This object was watched for 60 seconds.

Its size rules out the possibility of its being a bird or other known creature. No cloud could have moved in such a trajectory.

It was not a balloon, I can state positively. A number of men who saw it were experienced balloonists. Furthermore, they were in a position to know that no balloon capable of approaching the object's altitude was in the area. Even at 120,000 feet, near the peak altitude for any present type, a balloon would have to have been moving at 1,700 miles per hour to conform to the trajectory data.

And to clinch it, the wind 20 miles up was, as it happens, moving from east to west -- opposite to the motion of the object.

Hallucination? Optical illusion? I think it is reasonable to say that illusions do not appear simultaneously and identically to five different trained weather observers.

I cannot think of any other possibilities. Reliable observers saw the object. A sensitive instrument tracked it. The atmosphere was bright and clear in an area where we considered it a dull day if you could not see 50 miles horizontally with the naked eye.

The only flaw was that I -- up to that time -- had not seen a Flying Saucer personally.

Nonetheless, the information excited me. I began to seek an explanation -- a respectable, convincing answer in terms of physics, mathematics, aerodynamics and astronomy as we know them today.

Before I had completed my theories, I saw a Saucer for myself.

On morning late in May, I was standing outside of my office at the White Sands base during the flight of an Army upper atmosphere missile. These, of course, rise much faster than a balloon and usually you loose sight of them shortly before they reach peak elevation. You are very fortunate if you can spot them again on the way down.

The missile had just been fired, and we had just lost sight of it when a lieutenant commander standing next to me yelled: "There it goes."

A Marine captain and I saw what he was pointing at. (A civilian engineer and a Marine major with us did not.) A white object was proceeding very slowly westward. As I watched, it rapidly gained speed.

The object had now passed overhead, and I thought it was going to fall near a ranch house two or three miles west of us. But it spurted like a scalded cat, shot over the Organ Mountains behind us and disappeared.

This was a very serious matter to us. We always took precautions to prevent missiles from leaving the range. Immediately, I phoned the range safety officer.

"I've just seen your missile leave the range to the west of here," I said.

He groaned. As we debated what to do, we both heard the thudding impact of our missile well to the north of us and in the center of the range.

What, then, had I seen? I now faced the problem of every Flying Saucer witness. What was truth? What was imagination?

Two Saturday Evening Post articles last year by Sidney Shalett concluded that the disks were hallucinations, upper atmosphere weather balloons, astronomical phenomena, or the result of vertigo or self hypnosis. In the January issue of this magazine, Donald E. Keyhoe, aviation expert for TRUE, asserted that the saucers are visitors from another planet.

I thought back as carefully as I could over what I had seen. I realized I was slightly better off than most witnesses. I had not expected to see a Saucer, but I had expected to see something. My eyes, fairly used to this kind of observations, had been looking for a fast moving missile.

These impressions I settled on as accurate:

1. The Saucer, at the time it was first sighted, had been going at an extremely slow speed, perhaps 1 mile per second.

2. Despite the relative slowness, I could not determine its shape, although I judged it was similar in size to Saucer No. 1 because it was visible at an altitude above 25 miles.

3. It accelerated to a speed far in excess of anything obtainable with present day rocket motors.

4. The object passed within 5 degrees of the sun and was still visible to the naked eye. This would hardly have been true if the the object had been a meteor.

5. Again, there was no evidence of a propulsion system.

The last appearance of Flying Disks which I feel is reliable enough to report occurred in early June. I did not see it personally, but the circumstances are impressive enough for me to include them here.

This day we were firing a Navy upper atmosphere missile. Shortly after its take-off, two small circular objects, guessed to be approximately 20 inches in diameter, appeared from no place and joined the Navy missile on its upward flight. (Similar small disks have also been previously reported as well as the larger types mentioned earlier.)

At about the time the Navy missile was doing well over 2,000 feet per second, the object on the west side passed through the exhaust gases and joined its friend on the east. They then apparently decided the missile was not going fast enough for them. They accelerated, passed the Navy missile and sailed off upward and eastward.

Some eight minutes after the Navy missile had fallen back into the range, I received a radio report from a very powerful optical observation post located on a mountain top. The Navy missile, it said, had just passed over the mountain and was going out of the range to the west. This could have been one of the two objects that we had seen and which had changed direction, or it could have been a third one.

The odd thing is that before long I had reports from eleven men in five separate OP's, none of which could communicate with each other and which were located at different points of the compass. All had seen the two objects perform as I have described.

Putting together all the data observed in three appearances, one of which I had seen for myself, and all which I believe beyond doubt, I decided that it was necessary to look outside the known world for an answer.

No one realizes better than I do that the explanations which follow may be incorrect. I think, however, that there is too much evidence from too many reliable sources for us to be content with inconclusive explanations, and we must press on to find an answer.

I think that the saucers are piloted space ships, first, because of their flight performance. The White Sands Saucers were most definitely capable of changing their direction while above our atmosphere. This extreme maneuverability -- plus their large size -- eliminates for me the likelihood of their being operated by remote control.

My own experience with rockets leads me to feel that a Saucer with such characteristics is far beyond the technical powers of anyone on earth. Our present system of rocket propulsion, using thermochemical energy, is entirely inadequate to duplicate the terrific 5 degree gain in altitude observed during the flight of Saucer No. 1.

If you accept this, you are led to assume that the Saucers can be propelled only by power derived from the atom.

What kind? And how? Well, I suggest a "radiation pressure motor."

Radiation pressure is one of the oldest known physical phenomena. You have seen it work if you have ever noticed a little glass enclosed gadget that jewelers often place in their shop windows. This is the "Crookes radiometer," a device more that 100 years old. Inside a small glass globe four metal vanes, black on one side and silver on the other, rotate on an axis, although there is apparently no motor driving them.

Light supplies the power. It radiates a "push" that varies from the surface of one vane to that of the one next to it. Now, where could the Saucer engineers get enough light to propel their missile through space?

I envision a motor somewhat like a fluorescent lamp. An inner core is filled with fissionable material, probably a gas. An outer tube surrounding the core contains a fluorescent material.

The fissionable gas activates the fluorescent material, causing light. Light exerts pressure -- a propulsive push or thrust -- against a heavily shielded curved reflector. The push propels the missile.

The activity of the fluorescent material is controlled by increasing or decreasing the amount of fissionable gas in the inner core. And fluorescent material is pumped into the outer tube as it is used up. This is greatly oversimplified, and certain major problems remain.

There is, for instance, no known substance out of which the tubes could be constructed. Any material we can compound would disintegrate under the fissioning process. I would also hesitate to say what kind of shield would completely protect the Saucer crew from radiation effects.

The theory of a radiation pressure motor has been discussed with experts at a number of universities. Some scoffed. Some were encouraging. Since our present investigations of atomic power are in the primer stage, however, I think it's early to say the idea is impossible. Let's simply admit that if the Saucer people utilize anything like this principle, they have probably refined and perfected it.

While I have my neck out really far, I'd like to add that a Saucer would use three sets of motors.

The main set would be used to launch it and propel it on its space voyage. These motors would be placed in one segment of the edge of the disk. A second set, probably located in the flat under surface of the disk, would be used to sustain it in flight while it hovered or prepared to land.

The third would be a small set to control roll and tilt. Since radiation from the main power plant might be great, I should imagine that the crew would be confined to a segment of the leading edge of the disk.

This would leave a large area of the midsection for fuel storage tanks, food supplies and other equipment.

One case, described by both Shalett and Keyhoe, involves a disk conforming to this pattern.

At 2:45 a.m., on July 24, 1948, an Eastern Airlines DC-3, enroute to Atlanta, Georgia, from Montgomery, Alabama, sighted a "brilliant, fast moving object" about a mile away. Captain Clarence S. Chiles, an ex-Air Transport Command flier, and Pilot John B. Whitted, formerly a B-29 pilot, both observed it clearly.

They agreed that it was about 100 feet long, shaped like a cigar. It was wingless. When the object passed them, at about eye level, they saw two rows of "windows" along the fuselage. These glowed with a blinding white light. A dark blue light ran the length of the shape, along the underside. There was a red orange flame exhaust which rocked the DC-3 at the missile veered off and zoomed out of sight.

It seems to me that rather than a cigar shaped fuselage, what the pilots may have seen was a disk, edge on. The two rows of ports would be the vents of the main power plant. The blue light came from the belly motors, thrusting downward to enable the disk to operate at the slow speed of 500 to 700 miles per hour which the pilots estimated.


The flame I am less sure about. Possibly the fact that it was traveling within the Earth's atmosphere (the DC-3 was at 5,000 feet during the encounter) made exhaust particles visible. The jolt it imparted to the DC-3, however, is not surprising. I should say that the plane felt a light energy blast, a product of radiation pressure motor operation.

The discus shape, as such, conforms to aerodynamic law and would provide a perfectly feasible flying machine.

I believe, though, that the design is employed as a temperature compensating device. By varying the angle of tilt, the disk in its flight through space could control the amount of heat it received from the sun. Flat side toward the sun, it could absorb considerable heat, edge on very little.

Design, construction and operation of the Saucers indicate to me that a very superior intelligence is at work. Not only at work, but present within the disks. I cannot believe that the ready maneuverability shown, for instance, by Saucer No. 2 in avoiding the uprising Army missile was remotely controlled.

What these people look like I have no idea. Since I insist that they are actually at the controls of their strange craft, however, I must suggest that they are considerably smaller than we are. We already know that while 6 G's are a tremendous strain on the human frame, creatures smaller than ourselves can bear up under incredible pressures. A bee can probably take 20 G's, an ant even more. Saucer crewmen would also have to be pretty small to ride Saucers No. 3, the 20 inch disks. It is staggering to imagine intelligent beings that small, but we must not disregard any possibilities.

Where the Saucers come from can only be answered by guesswork. My guess is Mars. Mars "cooled off" and perhaps became capable of supporting some form of life millions of years before the earth did. The Martians, if such there be, would have a big start in scientific development.

I believe that the frequency of the Saucers' appearance over the southwestern section of the United States may have been influenced by the relation of Mars to Earth on July 16, 1945.

On this date Mars was in a good position to see our surface. And at 5:30 a.m. on that morning, the first atomic bomb was exploded in New Mexico, in the northwest corner of the present White Sands range. It is conceivable that the flash was viewed from afar by sensitive optical instruments.

What are the Saucers up to? So far, their behavior would indicate that they are interested only in observing us. The fact that the Saucers' operations so far have been peaceful also seems to knock out the suspicion that they have been launched by a foreign Earth power such as Russia. If a nation were fiddling with long range missiles, why would it experiment over the United States, where a crash could deliver the object and all its secrets on our doorstep?

Will the Saucers land? The small ones might. If their occupants decide they could survive on Earth, the small Saucers might be dispatched from the larger missiles.

The larger disks, even assuming maximum motor efficiency, probably could not risk the loss of accumulated momentum that would occur in landing. It would be too difficult to generate again the momentum necessary to return home.

Why don't you see Saucers?

The atmosphere over about 75 percent of the Earth's surface is filled with moisture particles. These give us a "white sky" much of the time. Against such a background, it would be mere chance which allowed anyone to sight a Flying Saucer. At White Sands, we undoubtedly had near perfect atmospheric conditions and excellent visibility.

I know that this is a fantastic story. I cannot prove the theories I have outlined. I probably can't even prove the disks are real until I've ridden in one.

But in terms of the very limited knowledge we of the Earth possess, these ideas perhaps offer a clue to the solution of a great puzzle.

Whatever the answer, I can't feel that there is anything terrible, hostile or dangerous about the Flying Saucers or their occupants.

The challenge of space travel has fascinated the people of Earth for centuries.

It is not fantastic for us to explore other planets, why should it be fantastic for Martians, say, to visit us?

So far, all I have suffered is a little hurt pride. They got here first.

Commander Robert Bright McLaughlin is an expert in naval ordnance and guided missiles. For the past three years he has been in charge of the Navy unit assisting in classified projects at the White Sands Proving Ground, Las Cruces, New Mexico.


He began his researches in the guided missile field in 1939, four years after his graduation from the Naval Academy. A post-graduate student of engineering at that time, he was assigned to a Navy board evaluating the effectiveness of antiaircraft gunnery. By 1941, he had outlined the technique for a "beam rider" guided missile which, by the ability to "change its mind" after being fired, heightened antiaircraft accuracy against swift, evasive, high altitude aircraft targets.

During the war he was gunnery officer aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid and saw action in the major Pacific campaign from Kwajalein to the Philippines. He was with the Intrepid when it underwent an attack by thirty three Japanese Kamikaze (suicide) planes in three and a half minutes.

In August, 1946, he was assigned to White Sands. He is 37, a stocky, round faced man with curly brown hair, blue eyes, and a crisp, precise manner of speaking. He is married and has two youngsters, a girl of 2 1/2 years and a boy of 10 months.

At present he is skipper of the destroyer Bristol.


When the Air Force early this year declassified the hitherto secret Project Saucer files, it revealed that 375 incidents of "unidentified flying objects" had been analyzed by consulting scientists. Of these, 341 had been explained to the Air Force's satisfaction.
It was officially admitted that for 34 incidents, there was no "apparent ready explanation." Among these was the opening incident of Commander McLaughlin's article.

Even these 34, the Air Force said, might be rationally explained if the "psychological and physiological" factors were taken into account. But the Aero-Medical Laboratory, which was most concerned with such factors, acknowledges that "it will never be possible to say with certainty that any individual did not see a space ship, an enemy missile or other flying objects. All that is possible is to judge the likelihood that he saw such objects."

In short, Project Saucer experts admit that statistical probability -- rather than scientific proof -- was the best it could expect to achieve.

The Editors of TRUE believe that the admitted existence of 34 "unexplained incidents" indicates that the announced discontinuance of Project Saucer was premature. TRUE further believes that the official announcement was ill advised, made in haste, and that the United States Project Saucer has in fact been continued without interruption under another code name.


The 34 "unexplained incidents" which the Air Force concedes -- there are no doubt others -- are the best documented and the hardest to explain in any fashion other than by the interplanetary thesis first set forth by Donald E. Keyhoe in TRUE for January and here repeated by Commander McLaughlin.

"The year 2003 marks the 50th anniversary of the disappearance of USAF 1st Lt. Felix E. Moncla, Jr., who, together with his fellow crew member, 2nd Lt. Robert L. Wilson, disappeared over Lake Superior on November 23, 1953, while pursuing in their F-89C "Scorpion" a UFO which was seen on radar. Radar data at the time of the incident suggested to witnesses involved in the pursuit that the object being pursued by Lts. Moncla and Wilson had suddenly reversed its course, approached the aircraft, and "merged" with it.

Avoyelles Parish has connections to a UFO mystery that goes back 49 years. Gordon Heath from Surrey, British Columbia was in Marksville recently to investigate the background of Lt. Felix E. Moncla who disappeared along with another crew member, Second Lt. Robert L. Wilson, over Lake Superior on Monday, November 23, 1953.

According to Heath, who is a UFO hobbyist, Moncla was on temporary assignment at Kinross Air Force Base in ...(sic. Michigan)... when he was sent to identify and unidentified craft over the Soo Locks, which is restricted airspace. Moncla, in an F-89C, pursued the craft for about 30 minutes flying at 30,000 feet over the middle of Lake Superior. He was flying about 500 mph when he was instructed by ground radar to descend to 7,000 feet.

When the unidentified craft was finally on radar it was noted that the two radar images, the UFO and the Air Force jet, were very close and at some point they intersected but only one remained. Heath says that the unidentified craft flew north and disappeared from radar.

Lt. Moncla's jet mysteriously disappeared without a trace.

Heath, who is a computer systems engineer, has been interested in UFO's for quite awhile and while surfing the Internet found the story about Moncla and the incident that caused the jet to disappear. To add to the mystery, there were no remains of the jet found and no remains of either pilots' bodies.

Lt. Moncla graduated from Moreauville High School and received a BS degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute. He was attending the LSU School of Medicine when he applied for a commission in the Air Force and called to active duty after the outbreak of the Korean war. He was the son of Yvonne and Felix Moncla Sr. and was married with two small children when he was killed in the flying accident.

There is a memorial stone for Lt. Moncla in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Moreauville. The inscription reads: "Disappeared Nov. 23, 1953 intercepting an UFO over Canadian Border as Pilot of a Northrup F89 Jet Plane."

Heath was in town to talk to members of the family and friends of Moncla and asked if any one has any information that he can use to please call the newspaper at 253-5413

...Under Section III any pilot who reveals an official UFO report can be imprisoned for one to ten years and fined up to 10,000 dollars. (Title 18, U. S. Code, 793)

Three months later, in December, 1953, I discovered the second order, which carries court-martial penalties. For several days I had been checking on a strange story from Kimross (sic) Air Force Base, near Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. The facts had been hurriedly covered up, after a brief Air Force admission...

It was the evening of November 23, and wintry darkness had settled over Michigan. At an isolated radar station Air Defense operators were watching their scope in a routine guard against possible enemy attack.

Suddenly the "blip" of an unknown machine appeared on the glass screen. The Ground Control Intercept officer took a quick look. The "unknown" was flying over the Soo Locks--and no aircraft was scheduled near that important target. Whatever it was, it had to be identified swiftly.

In less than two minutes an F-89 from Kimross (sic) Field was streaking toward the locks. At the jet's controls was Lieutenant Felix Moncla, Jr., a veteran at 26. Behind him was Lieutenant R. R. Wilson, 22-year-old Oklahoman, acting as radar observer. Guided by Ground Control, Moncla climbed steeply toward the "unknown."

Back at GCI, the controller watched the jet's blip on his glowing radarscope. As it moved toward the UFO's blip, the strange craft changed course. The controller called Moncla, gave him the new bearing. From the scope he saw that the F-89 was now over Sault Sainte Marie, though to the crew the city's lights would be only a blur, quickly lost behind.

The UFO, flying as fast as a jet airliner, was heading toward lake Superior. At over 500 miles per hour the F-89 raced after it, out across Whitefish Bay.

Nine more minutes ticked by in the tense quiet of the GCI radar room. Gradually the F-89 cut down the gap. By now, the controller knew, Wilson should have spotted their quarry on the fighter's short-range radar. Watching the chase, he cut in his microphone and called the flight's code name.

"Target should be visual. Still bearing--"

He broke off, staring at the scope.

The two blips had suddenly merged into one.

Whether the strange machine had abruptly slowed or Moncla unaccountably had put on full power, no one in the room could tell.

But one thing seemed grimly certain: the two machines were locked together, as if in a smashing collision.

For a moment longer the huge, ominous blip remained on the glass. Then it quickly went off the scope.

Marking the position, the controller flashed word to Search and Rescue. Moncla and Wilson might have bailed out in time. Both had life jackets and self-inflating rafts; even in the icy water they might survive for a little while.

The mystery craft and the F-89 had come together far off-shore, about 100 miles from Sault Sainte Marie and 70 miles from Keweenaw Point. As quickly as possible, search planes with flares were roaring over Lake Superior. After a fruitless night search, boats joined the hunt as American and Canadian flyers crisscrossed a hundred-mile area.

But no trace was ever found of the missing men, the F-89--or the unknown machine...

Soon afterwards the object was seen to rise again steeply and depart at high speed in a north-westerly direction, towards Moorabbin Airport some five kms away.

I had a look through the complete Royal Australian Air Force timeline and I couldn't find any other UFO incidents - only Westall. What is going on at the RAAF that someone there has seen fit to include this particular incident into the air force's timeline? Are we being given a message, a clue, a hint of something...?

Incident: November 17, 1986 - over northeastern Alaska - It was a special Japan Air Lines 747 cargo flight to carry a load of French wine from Paris to Tokyo. The flight plan would carry flight 1628 from Paris to Reykjavik, Iceland, across the North Atlantic and Greenland, then across Canada to Anchorage, Alaska, and finally across the Pacific to Tokyo. The crew consisted of veteran Captain Kenju Terauchi, co-pilot Takanori Tamefuji, and flight engineer Yoshio Tsukuba.

On November 16, 1986, laden with wine, JAL1628 took off from Paris and flew the first leg of the trip, to Reykjavik. The next day, they continued, flying over Greenland and then across northern Canada without event.

Just after they crossed into Alaska, at 5:09 PM local time, Anchorage Air Traffic Control contacted them on the radio to report initial radar contact. The Anchorage flight controller asked them to turn 15 degrees to the left and head for a point known as Talkeetna on a heading of 215 degrees. They were at 35,000 feet and traveling at a ground speed of about 600 mph.

At about 5:11 PM local time, Captain Terauchi noticed the lights of some sort of aircraft about 2000 feet below and 30 degrees to the left front of them. He decided that the aircraft was probably an American jet fighter from nearby Eielson or Elmendorf Air Force Bases patrolling Alaskan airspace, so he ignored them at first. However, after a few minutes, he noticed that the lights were keeping pace with his own aircraft, which would be an unusual thing for patrolling jets to do.

It was about seven or so minutes since we began paying attention to the lights (when), most unexpectedly, two spaceships stopped in front of our face, shooting off lights. The inside cockpit shined brightly and I felt warm in the face.

Terauchi said that it was his impression that the two objects he had seen below them minutes before had suddenly jumped in from of him. The craft, one above the other, kept pace with the 747 for several minutes, moving in unison with an odd rocking motion. After about seven minutes, they changed to a side-by-side arrangement.



Terauchi said that the "amber and whitish" lights were like flames coming out of multiple rocket exhaust ports arranged in two rectangular rows on the craft. He felt that they fired in a particular sequence to stabilize the craft, much like the small maneuvering thrusters on the Space Shuttle. He also reported seeing sparks like a fire when using gasoline or carbon fuel.

Co-pilot Tamefuji described the lights as "Christmas assorted" lights with a "salmon" color. He said: I remember red or orange, and white landing light, just like a landing light. And weak green, ah, blinking. He also described the lights as pulsating slowly. They became stronger, became weaker., became stronger, became weaker, different from strobe lights.

The lights were "swinging" in unison as if there were "very good formation flight...close" of two aircraft side by side. He described the appearance of the lights as similar to seeing "night flight head-on traffic", where it is only possible to see the lights on an approaching aircraft and "we can not see the total shape." He said, I'm sure I saw something. It was clear enough to make me believe that there was an oncoming aircraft.

Flight engineer Tsukuba, who sat behind the copilot, did not have as good a view of the lights. He first saw them "through the L1 window at the 11 o'clock position" and he saw "clusters of lights undulating". These clusters were "made of two parts...shaped like windows of an airplane". He emphasized that "the lights in front of us were different from town lights." He described the colors as white or amber.

Tamefuji decided to call Anchorage Air Traffic Control, and for the next thirty minutes the 747 and AARTCC were in constant contact regarding the UFO.

During this time, Captain Terauchi asked Tskububa to hand him a camera so that he could attempt to take a photograph of the lights. However, Terauchi was unfamiliar with the camera and could not get it to operate. Tsukuba also could not get his camera to operate due to problems with the auto-focus and finally gave up trying to take a photo.

At this point they began experiencing some radio interference and were asked by Anchorage to change frequencies. Terauchi later said that Anchorage kept asking him about clouds in the immediate area: They asked us several times if there were clouds near our altitude. We saw thin and spotty clouds near the mountain below us, no clouds in mid-to-upper air, and the air current was steady.

Soon after the exchanges about clouds, the objects flew off to the left. Terauchi said later: There was a pale white flat light in the direction where the ships flew away, moving in a line along with us, in the same direction and same speed and at the same altitude as we were.

Terauchi decided to see whether they could see anything on the 747's own radar:

I thought it would be impossible to find anything on an aircraft radar if a large ground radar did not show anything, but I judged the distance of the object visually and it was not very far. I set the digital weather radar distance to 20 (nautical) miles, radar angle to horizon (i.e., no depression angle). There it was on the screen. A large green and round object had appeared at 7 or 8 miles (13 km to 15 km) away, where the direction of the object was. We reported to Anchorage center that our radar caught the object within 7 or 8 miles in the 10 o'clock position. We asked them if they could catch it on ground radar but it did not seem they could catch it at all

At 5:25:45, after spending two minutes looking, the military radar at Elmendorf Regional Operational Control Center also picked up something. The ROCC radar controller reported back to the AARTCC that he was getting some "surge primary return." By this he meant an occasional radar echo unaccompanied by a transponder signal.

As the 747 neared Fairbanks:

The lights (of the city) were extremely bright to eyes that were used to the dark. (The cockpit lights had been turned off to eliminate window reflections of internal lights.) We were just above the bright city lights and we checked the pale white light behind us. Alas! There was a silhouette of a gigantic spaceship. We must run away quickly! "Anchorage Center. The JAL1628 is requesting a change of course to right 45 degrees." It felt like a long time before we received permission

Just after the plane turned to the right, the AARTCC controller called the Fairbanks Approach Radar controller to find out whether or not the short-range radar had a target near the JAL. The approach radar reported no target other than JAL1628.

The plane came out of the turn and flew toward Talkeetna at an altitude of 31,000 ft, with the object still following.

At about 5:40 a United Airlines passenger jet took off from Anchorage and headed north to Fairbanks. The AARTCC controller decided to ask the UA pilot to try to see the object that was following the JAL flight. The UA pilot said he would look when he got closer. The controller asked the JAL flight to stay at 31,000 ft and the UA flight to stay at 29,000 ft. He then directed the UA flight to turn some more so that the planes would pass within five miles of one another.

As the United Airlines jet got closer, the UFO apparently dropped behind, allowing the JAL plane to get far ahead. The United pilot asked the AARTCC to have the JAL pilot flash the headlights on the JAL aircraft so he could locate the plane. At 5:49:45 the JAL pilot did that. At this point the planes were about 25 miles apart.

When the planes were about 12 miles apart, the UA plane reported seeing the JAL plane and nothing else. But by this time the UFO had apparently disappeared, not being seen by JAL1628, either.

At about 5:51, the AARTCC requested that a military TOTEM flight in the area also fly toward the JAL plane for a look. During the next several minutes TOTEM viewed the JAL plane but couldn't see any other traffic. JAL1628 proceeded to Anchorage and landed at 6:20 PM.

The FAA conducted an investigation of the incident, and did not issue its final report until March 5. CSICOP's (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal)Phil Klass issued a premature statement on January 22 claiming that the UFOs were the planets Jupiter and Mars - an impossible solution because the UFO was seen in a part of the sky opposite the position of these planets and because the UFOs moved from positions one above the other to side by side.

CSICOP later issued a second explanation that the UFO was light reflecting off of clouds of ice crystals - also unlikely because the sky was clear at the reported altitude of the UFO. The FAA attributed the radar images received by ground radar to a "split radar return from the JAL Boeing 747."

CALLAHAN PRESENATION SUMMARY;

UFO INCIDENT INVOLVING A JAPANESE B747 IN THE VICINITY OF ANC - NOV. 1986

As the Division Manager for the FAA Washington headquarters Accidents, Evaluation and Investigations, I was responsible for the quality of air traffic service provided to the FAA users. When informed of the “UFO incident involving a Japanese B747 in the Alaskan region” I ordered the RADAR recorded data and voice tapes flown to the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey for evaluation and analysis by both FAA Hardware and Software experts.


After reviewing the play back of the event on a controller’s scope, referred to as a “PVD” and receiving a detailed analysis of the incident, I briefed the FAA Administrator and members of
President Reagan’s scientific staff, CIA, etc. on the following:

During the play back of the event I observed a primary radar target in the position reported by the Japanese pilot. The intermittent primary target stayed in close proximately to the B747 for approximately 31 minutes. Both the FAA controller and military NORAD controller reported observing the RADAR return of the “UFO” target on their “scopes”. There was no noticeable weather” in the area. “You can see into next Tuesday” was reported by a United pilot.

The UFO was painted as an extremely large primary target. As a result of the lacking run length identification the FAA computer system treated the UFO RADAR return as “weather” and transmitted it to the controller’s PVD via a non recorded line. ( All known aircraft are programed in the FAA computer systems “Run Length” table.) At the conclusion of the hand-off briefing the CIA advised they were “confiscating all the data, this event never happened, we were never here and you are all sworn to secrecy.” They also advised they would not notify the media as “it would scare the public.

"Perhaps the most impressive UFO story told during the recent Brazilian World UFO Forum was that of Haraldo Westendorf, who made news headlines a year ago when he allegedly flew his private plane within a few dozen meters of an enormous unidentified flying object.

Westendorf is 40 years old, a father of three children and a successful businessman. He is also an avid private pilot rated for acrobatic flying. The following account is based directly on his one-hour presentation at the Brazilian UFO conference, which included several detailed illustrations.

Westendorf says he took off in his single-engine Piper Apache from the city of Pelotas near the southernmost tip of Brazil on the morning of November 5, 1996. It was to be a routine recreational flight of the kind he takes for fun whenever time allows.

On this occasion, he had been in the air only about 12 minutes and was flying at an altitude of 5,000 feet over a large lake some five miles southeast of Pelotas when he saw ahead of him an enormous aerial object. The time was about 10:30 a.m.

He radioed the Pelotas tower to learn if they could see the object from the ground. They confirmed that the object was visible to them and asked him for a close-range report. Westendorf then decided to fly as close as he could.

Westendorf emphasizes that he did not believe in UFOs and says this accounts for his initial willingness to fly close to the object. He didn't know he might be in danger.

When he got close to the object, he realized that in his twenty years of piloting experience he had never seen or heard of anything like it. Since he had done stunt training in the United States and had also flown in France, he had become acquainted with some very advanced and exotic aircraft. But he knew that this was not an airplane.

Westendorf showed several detailed color drawings of the object, with his own plane drawn to scale alongside it. He describes the object as a faceted cone, flat on the bottom with a rounded point on top. On each of the eight or ten sloping side panels were three large bulges, like triangle-shaped bay windows on the side of a house -- but they did not look like windows. The entire surface was brown in color. The structure was about 70 meters (225 feet) high and about 100 meters (325 feet) in diameter, big enough to fill nearly an entire soccer field if landed. His own plane, less than 6 meters wide, was tiny by comparison.

Westendorf says he spent about 12 to 14 minutes in close proximity to the object, trying to see as much as he could. Although the Pelotas air tower does not have radar, he believes the airport radar at Curitiba (nearly 450 nautical miles northeast of his position) tracked the whole encounter. However, officials at Curitiba deny this (see below).

The object was spinning around slowly and moving southeast toward the nearby seacoast at a speed of about 60 nautical miles per hour. Westendorf managed to fly entirely around the base of the object three times. At one point, he says, his wingtip came within about 40 meters of the object.

After his third lap around the object, Westendorf noticed that the rounded top seemed to disappear, leaving what looked like an open hole at the top. Then he saw, emerging from inside the object, a classic flying saucer. It rose sideways, its long axis vertical until it cleared the top of the larger object, then tipped down to assume its normal orientation and departed at tremendous speed. Westendorf said that this saucer was about 10 meters in diameter, or nearly twice as wide as his own plane, and he thinks it flew away at more than Mach 10. The saucer showed no indication of noticing Westendorf's presence nearby.

As soon as the saucer disappeared, Westendorf decided to try to fly over the top of the object. Brazilian media later reported that he wanted to fly his plane into the interior of the object, but he says he never even considered that. He only hoped for a peek through the opening.

To get more altitude, he flew his plane several hundred meters away from the object, turned around and began a steep climb. He noticed that the object was now rotating much faster. Then he saw brilliant beams of red light shoot from the top of the object toward the sky. He quickly abandoned his plan to fly over the top.

Then, to his amazement, the object rose straight up at tremendous speed. For the first time, Westendorf was scared, because he believed the object's rapid acceleration might produce a shock wave of turbulence that could overwhelm his own plane. As a trained pilot, he knew that air traffic controllers recommend staying at least three minutes behind a large aircraft to avoid such turbulence. He estimated that the unidentified object probably weighed at least three times as much as a 747 jumbo jet, so its shock wave should be huge -- and he was only a few hundred meters away.

He quickly began emergency procedures in case his plane went into a spin or a stall. But to his surprise, he did not encounter any turbulence.

At that point the Pelotas air traffic controller told Westendorf to contact the government-controlled Curitiba air defense system radar center. Doing so, he asked if the Curitiba radar tower could see what was happening to him on their radar. They said they didn't see anything. He then called a second time, identifying himself by the transponder number of his own aircraft and again asking if they could see anything unusual.


Again they denied seeing anything. He called a total of four times. Finally the Curitiba tower told him that they showed no traffic at all within two hundred nautical miles of his position. At this point, Westendorf became convinced they were lying, because there are two large cities with airports -- Santa Maria and Porto Alegre -- closer than 200 miles from his position. He believes there had to be at least some normal air traffic near those cities.

Meanwhile, people in the Pelotas tower had watched the entire encounter. Even sunbathers on the beach at Pelotas were able to see it.

At that time there was a thick layer of nimbo-stratus clouds above Westendorf's position, and the object had apparently entered that cloud cover. He decided to fly above the clouds if possible to see if he could relocate the object. He emerged from the clouds at about 10,000 feet, but he never saw the object again.

Westendorf happened to have a cell phone with him in the plane, and at that moment his young son called him on the phone. Westendorf asked to talk to his wife. He told her that he had just had a close encounter with a UFO. He says he was now trembling and stuttering when he talked. But his wife didn't believe him and said he sounded crazy.

He then decided to return to Pelotas airport. But when he landed, he discovered that press and TV people were already on hand, waiting for him. This happened because three of his friends, all private pilots like himself, happened to be monitoring his radio transmissions on their own radios at home. When they heard he was flying around a UFO, they alerted the press.

The press mobbed him the minute he got out of his plane. But Westendorf told everyone that he would not say anything until he talked with the people in the Pelotas control tower.

Speaking with the head air traffic controller and two others on duty at that time, he asked them if they would back up his story to the press. He said that if they refused to back him up, he would deny the whole thing. So the head traffic controller called his boss, an Air Force colonel in the city of Porto Alegre, to ask permission to talk about the UFO.

The colonel told the traffic controller to decide for himself -- so the controller told Westendorf that he and his assistants would back up the story. All of them agreed to have their pictures and stories printed in one of Brazil's leading news magazines, and from that point on the case became a national sensation. Westendorf himself was featured on the cover of that magazine (he carries a copy with him to prove it).

Despite his prolonged and close proximity to the huge UFO -- an object that surely fits the idea of a "mothership" -- Westendorf says that neither he nor his aircraft showed any signs of ill effect either during or after the encounter. His aircraft instruments and systems functioned properly throughout, and apart from becoming highly agitated during the latter part of the event, he did not experience any physical, mental or emotional difficulties.

This case seems to qualify as the closest daylight aircraft encounter with a UFO ever reported. The multiple professional witnesses, including three ground-based air traffic controllers, numerous other eyewitnesses and at least three civilians who heard Westendorf's running radio commentary of the event, lend very large credence to the story. The reported size and behavior of the object positively rule out any known human aircraft, and the observation of a classic flying saucer emerging from the larger craft supports the often-mentioned but rarely corroborated existence of a true "mothership."

While the multiple visual witnesses are impressive, the denial of radar observation at Curitiba airport is ambiguous. Westendorf seems sure the Curitiba officials were lying. But there are reported cases of UFOs clearly visible to eyewitnesses but seemingly invisible to radar. Was this the case here? Certainly the Brazilian military cannot have failed to study this case, which became an instant sensation in the press. If in fact their radar did not detect the object, this must have been cause for concern. On the other hand, if their radar did confirm the object, one can only imagine the impact it must have had upon Brazil's government and military leaders.
