---Toronto Maple Leaf player clueless about Nelson Mandela during a Mandela tribute
The Toronto Raptors honored the late Nelson Mandela on Friday night at an event called “The Giant of Africa.”On the first anniversary of his death, the South African president and human rights icon was celebrated throughout their game against the Cavaliers, from the team wearing special warm-up gear to videos throughout the night.
Perhaps Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier caught a few of those vignettes on the Jumbotron. Perhaps he then thought, “Holy [crap], I guess Nelson Mandela wasn’t a star athlete after all…”
Bernier was interviewed at the event, wearing a nice suit and supporting … well, someone he thought was a tremendous athlete he watched growing up.
The video was on the Raptors’ YouTube on Saturday before it was removed; Reddit user TeroTheTerror on r/Hockey provides a transcript:
Reporter1 (SportsNet mic): Alright Jonathan, how important is, uh, the legacy of Nelson Mandela to you?
JB: Well obviously he’s been, uh, a tremendous, uh, athlete and you know obviously what, uh, he means to all the sports you know when you know the worl- the world can uh be changed by the sports it’s pretty amazing. And I think he’s definitely uh got a lot of respect in every sports and uh he’s definitely one of the athletes I watched growing up as well.
Reporter1’s mic disappears from frame
Reporter2: Why is it important for you to come show support tonight?
JB: Well I think any good cause is, uh, sorry (he’s apologizing to someone to the left of the screen, not sure who/why), it’s always, uh, you know I love supporting, uh, any kind of cause obviously it’s for the Afri-, in Africa it’s obviously it’s, uh, a great cause, and enjoying, I guess, the basketball game.
Reporter2: Thanks.
Now, it’s possible that Bernier brain-farted and thought that the question was about one of the star athletes attending the event, like Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley. Although the question clearly asked about Nelson Mandela.
And in fairness, Mandela was a tremendous athlete: an amateur boxer who ran two hours a day. And he did believe the world could change thanks to sports.
But, um, we’re pretty sure Bernier didn’t grow up watching Nelson Mandela play sports. Then again, he was only 70 years old when Bernier was born. And, like Jagr’s still playing, so anything’s possible.
^that was embarrassing. who doesn't know who Nelson Mandela is?
that being said, the Leafs have been on a roll lately. but are probably doomed to fail again.

Sad!
I heard about this but never read the full story.. holy shit man that's fucked up!
Anyways, the quest to the playoffs continues after a cool all-star break which I haven't enjoyed watching and sort of lost touch with them the past several years. I miss the older skills competition setup but it wasn't that bad I guess, quite funny and I'll probably tune in again next year.
i haven't watched the skills competition since they had it in atlanta and had domonique wilkins judge a breakaway contest like it was a slam dunk competition.
alex ovechkin won because he flipped the puck up in the air and swung at it like a baseball bat. he swung and missed and 'Nique voted him the winner. haha. garbage
in other news, i finally saw a win in person. went to the pens/jets game last night. it had been a while since i saw a win

Haha. TSN has fallen so far down.
I ended up watching most of the trade deadline on Sportsnet, their coverage was pretty fucking impressive.
Damn that chick puts the ho in hockey
Hasnt she fucked enough players to play at least a 4 on 4 ?
this pens-rangers game is one of the best i've seen in a long time. too bad they waited until game 5.
blackhawks score 2 goals with the goalie pulled in the final 2 minutes to tie the game, then lose 45 seconds into OT.
^I KNOW SMFH
I thought the B-hawks were gonna win it in OT !
i changed the channel during the intermission. turned it back and the game was over.
Lol yeah wtf
Anyone but the rangers
But im pulling for Emilio Estevez' Mighty Duckz
None of this shit is even on TV in the DC area except on weekends and even then, maybe

--- Dumb NHL player faces five charges for killing grizzly bear
Cheeky the Bear didn’t have the same fame in British Columbia as Cecil The Lion did in Zimbabwe, but his demise also made headlines when he was shot and killed in a trophy hunt in 2013.
His hunter wasn’t a Minnesota dentist; it was a Minnesota defenseman – Clayton Stoner, now with the Anaheim Ducks, who was photographed holding the severed head of “Cheeky.”
Two years later, Stoner is facing five charges related to the hunt under the Wildlife Act, according to the Vancouver Sun:
The B.C.-born Stoner is charged with two counts of making a false statement to obtain a licence on May 22, 2013, as well as one count of hunting without a licence, one count of hunting wildlife out of season, and one count of unlawful possession of dead wildlife — the latter three offences allegedly taking place on May 28, 2013. Stoner is scheduled to appear in Vancouver provincial court on Oct. 9.
The issue is that hunters need to be Canadian citizens or need to be physically present in B.C. in “six calendar months out of the 12 calendar months” before applying for the hunt. From the Sun:
The legal argument is that Stoner did not meet those conditions due to living out of the province as a professional hockey player. At the time of the hunt, Stoner played for the Minnesota Wild but joined Anaheim as a free agent in 2014.
Anyone who cannot meet that criteria must pay to hunt with a licensed B.C. guide-outfitter — typically, about $25,000 US for a coastal grizzly. The charges carry potential maximum fines of $50,000 to $250,000.
Stoner refused comment to the Sun on these developments. Back in 2013, he defended his trophy hunting:
“I grew up hunting and fishing in British Columbia and continue to enjoy spending time with my family outdoors,” said Stoner, in a statement released through the Minnesota Wild.
“I applied for and received a grizzly bear hunting licence through a British Columbia limited-entry lottery last winter and shot a grizzly bear with my licence while hunting with my father, uncle and a friend in May. I love to hunt and fish and will continue to do so with my family and friends in British Columbia.”
Stoner shot the bear in the Kwatna River estuary, which is an area First Nations had declared off-limits to trophy hunting according to the Sun.
Stoner isn’t the only NHL player to get into hot water for trophy hunting a bear. Please recall David Booth, now in camp with the Florida Panthers, who posted a string of photos showing him holding dead animals before posting one of him kissing a grizzly bear (seriously) in a show of inter-species peace.
Jaromir Jagr blackmailed by model with scandalous model selfie. He doesn't care.
http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/FC...0_2433261_.jpg
At this point in his life, 43-year-old Jaromir Jagr isn’t just marching to his own drummer, but basically his own drum corps. He’ll play as long as he wants. He play wherever he feels like it (i.e. places with a lack of personal income tax). He’s Jaromir Friggin’ Jagr, and you’re not.
So maybe you think you’re going to, say, blackmail Jagr with a scandalous selfie featuring him in bed with an 18-year-old model who happens to be dating a Czech junior player. Well, think again: You’re going to be about as successful as that Wayne Enterprises dweeb who tried to blackmail Bruce Wayne in “The Dark Knight.” In the words of Morgan Freeman: “Good luck.”
According to Blesk, a Czech tabloid, a model named Catherine from Moravia took a selfie in bed as Jagr slept next to her. The image had been making the rounds on Czech social media. Someone came across the photo, and had the bright idea to attempt to extort 50,000 crowns (or roughly $2,000 U.S.) from Jagr or else the photo would be released to the media.
So the photo was shopped to the media, and on Sept. 17 Nova.cz published the altered photo that the blackmailer had been using as “proof” that they had the image, presumably the one presented to Jagr.
Alas, there was one catch for this criminal mastermind:
Jagr. Doesn’t Care.
He literally told the blackmailer to do whatever he wanted with the photo. And so it hit the Czech media, and it was published in several European publications, and Jagr just keeps on Jagr'ing.
It should be said that while Jagr is reportedly single, Catherine is reportedly not. According to several reports, she’s the girlfriend of Czech junior player Domink Rudl, who was born in 1996, by which time Jagr had already won two Stanley Cups and a scoring title. He also reportedly calls Jagr one of his idols, just in case this entire thing wasn't awkward enough.
^ LMAO off. Dudes, single, why would he care being seen in bed with a hot model.
