As for the question, i'd say Australia in the 70's was governed at a federal level to my liking by Whitlam.

Countries that are founded thru invasion usually have a hatred towards the native people as a way of mentally covering over what they have done. Its a coping mechanism. Otherwise everyone would live in guilt and the country just wouldnt work. Happened with America, Australia, English in India, most African countries, the Spanish in latin america. If you look at the natives as unworthy and bad people, its makes what you are doing alot easier.

Natives that have come up in much more simple, socialble and respectful cultures are simply not prepared for the hatred which is about to be put upon them, and cant cope with it.

It was not directed at you, in that your initial post seemed like a precise and warrented criticism of an objectionalble policy. Although calling Australia facist seems a little extreme to me. But, at the same time, you live there, so you definitely know more about life in Australia than I do.

My main point is that all government has been and still is corrupt. HOWEVER, you are right in that corrupt policies should be met with resistance, expecially in countries that cliam to be democracies.

THe problem is that, to some degree, policies that you(and I) may disagree with, are often, even usually, backed by the majority of the people.

Which gets us back to the root of the problem with democracy: People are Stupid.

And as wu-corp taught me, the minority of the population that is not stupid and therefore has a say in policy are evil Jewluminatis.

And it has always been that way. My point, if there was one, was that while people imply that "things" are getting worse, they are really remaining consistent. And socially, I would argue that they are getting better.

Speaking long-term. From an extremely short-term perspective, shit is fucked up.

Also, I don't know anything about Australian politics, and being American, am to lazy to look him up. So I can't comment on Whitlam, but I do know that you were not alive in the 70s. Which isn't an insult, but I bet a lot of people were passionately against him, even if he was a great guy, at the time.

Sounds like a pretty sorry state of affairs, its such a shame that most aussies have that outlook seen as its such a beautiful country.

I think the history of the creation of Australia plays a large role on how they percieve the world and other races. I mean its kinda like what black people went through, they found out about their sinister past and just dident know how to take it, i think the same has happened to the aussies, its essentially a deep rooted mistrust of foreign powers and motives.

What does the general aussie population think of the british out of interest?

I should clarify, this is not my federal government.

Australia is divided into 7 states, each with it's own state government. So i am referring to my state government in this case.

Australia as a country isn't Fascist of course, i was just pointing out that not only is my state government legislating in the mold of Fascists, they are willing to cite Hitler's political achievements as some kind of framework for their own policy.

I understand your point though, in the end, who am i to say these policies are 'wrong' when the majority of the population supports them.

I still feel as though a lot of people, presented with information about mandatory sentencing and the criminilasation of Cannabis for instance, would change their opinions fairly abruptly.

I agree that in general things are getting better, people who enjoy saying things like "society is evil today in a way in wasn't before" are the same people who talk in almost exclusively cliches.

Whitlam is the only Prime Minister in Australia's history to be dismissed by the Governor General (the Queen's representative here). Pretty much demonstrates what occurs when someone with long term vision enters politics.

And yes, a lot of people hated what he was doing, because of it's economic consequences mainly.

Look, i'm probably painting a bleaker picture than most Australian's would because of my own personal beliefs.

I'm sure if you asked the other Australian's on this forum they'd praise the country and it's people far more.

The British are viewed as comical more than anything.

There is no animosity there though really, most people here just like to make light of Briton's lack of sporting prowess, their tendency to burn under the non ozone protected Australian sun and their tendency to complain a lot.

I mean, you have to remember the only British people most people here encounter are either tourists or older English people who have sort of retired here. Probably not the best representation of a nation.

Then again, foreigners seem to view Australian's as drunken louts who generally exhibit bombastic behaviour, and i wouldn't say this is far off the mark.

Dont get me wrong i'm not saying all aussies are sleepers, i've met some cool aussie students but when i go to walkabout i feel this obnoxious racist kinda vibe, my friend noticed it too, nothing to direct just a general belittling kinda autitue, buts its a jam made for the commons anyway so no suprises there really.

Australia seems quite distant from international politics also, kinda isolated. Does the govenor general have the final say in major decisions?

The GG is almost a purely symbolic position.

Technically, it is the most powerful political position, as they must sign off on all policy etc.

But in practice they usually do nothing.

The Dismissal was complicated, but basically the opposition blocked supply (wouldn't allow the government's budget to pass through parliament) and the GG as a solution dismissed the Prime Minister.

It was an aberration.
