HA! Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn aren't exactly master axe slayers themselves. I thought he added a really nice touch to the performance. The dude on the strat handled business, but Prince added a welcome new element to the classic song.
Btw listened to 'The Undertaker ' today. Good stuff. Love that Honkey Tonk Woman cover.
solo starts at the 3 minute mark. another one at 4:30
^Nice one.
I had a gal over last night (I broke my 13 months + cecils fast lolz) and was flicking through channels, and they had a Prince special on an Aussie music show. I had it on for a while and they must have been doing it chronologically cause they were showing all this funked out 80's stuff. I did catch vision of a trill live performance where he was playing some nice licks on the butterscotch tele. I hit record before we retired to my chamber, so I'll have to run through footage some thyme soon.
^^ haha good timing
could it have been something called Rage? I remember seeing some people from Australia talking about it prince.org earlier this week
for people looking for boots, there are just so many out there, it's hard to pick a good one, both for songs & sound quality
next to the aftershow in the Netherlands (Small Club 88) I discussed earlier in this thread, I'd also recommend looking for this :
"Prince And The Revolution - "From The Soundboard : 1984 Birthday Show" (a June 7, 1984 show that was released in updated sound quality in May 2011). absolutely perfect sound quality, stunning guitar playing (both Prince & Wendy Melvoin) and a nice setlist that includes some of the best early hits, b-sides, material written for Sheila E and still unreleased outtakes

all songs are pretty long with beautiful extended guitar solos
here's a review (not mine) http://mikea7.typepad.com/now_its_on...ay-show-1.html
some of the tracks are on youtube atm
these aren't even the best tracks on the release tbh. truly a stunning boot
a quick google search showed me this release was still being torrented/seeded/whatever they call it as recent as March this year, so I guess you should be able to retrieve it relatively easily
enjoy
Yeah G dat shit was on rage.
Funnily enough my earliest memories of Prince are from watching rage with my bros when we were all kids. Could never forget those fucking warped guitars he was always playing, haha.
on the poppier side of things, anybody checking for Prince protegées (and there were many of them), the isleoffailedpopstars blogspot has loads of them, with functioning zippyshare links. just run 'Prince' through its little search engine and lots of 80s and 90s albums will be coming your way
this is more of interest to completists of course
this Copenhagen 2002 aftershow has amazing guitar playing throughout. listen to the whole thing here ...
https://www.mixcloud.com/luciaamorra...in-copenhagen/
skip past the first 4 and a half minutes (that's just taped intro music)
this One Night Alone tour aftershow is also known as the 'My Band's Tight' boot
another great guitar boot is 'Prince, Josh and Cora' (2007 London aftershow) that really displays Prince's guitar playing skills. this show is interesting in that Prince is only accompanied by 2 other musicians on stage (rarely happens in his case). do the torrent thing and you should be able to find it
Still in sadness how his life ended.
yeah, people have died from long videogame marathons without sleep, and in much less time than 154 hours straight. This is my first time hearing about that regarding Prince though, thats interesting.
I tried listening to a torrent of a handful of his albums back in the day, just to be familiar with it because he's one of the most well known artists, but I just could never get into any of his music. Maybe I'll give em another chance sometime. I do recognize him as an amazing musical genius though, RIP.
^Yeah but they're saying pills might've played a role in Prince's death. The man was a worker, no doubt.
he slept 4 hours a night on average
when at Paisley Park he tried to record a new song a day (!) He'd have a song fully done in the early hours of the morning
on tour he had every concert taped. right after a concert he made the other band members watch the whole show with him on a big screen to show them what went wrong, where things could be improved and what worked well. the show would be changed accordingly. EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.
epic

LOL@Drunken Monk and Radioactive Man arguing hahahahahahahahaha. I bet Morris Day didn't go to Prince's cremation burial LOL. Jesse Johnson of The Time said that Morris was mad at Prince years ago for firing Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of The Time because Prince didn't like them producing music for artists while they were with the group. Morris said he should've been the one to fire them because he was the leader of the group. Jesse told BET's Video Soul host Donnie Simpson that the group members couldn't find Morris for months because he was mad at Prince LOL. Jesse said him and the guys were wondering if Morris was gonna quit singing. Only albums by The Time I like are The Time and What Time Is It. They did a song called The Stick that talks about masturbating hahahahahahahaha. They did another song called If The Kid Can't Make You Come which talks about sex hahahahahahahahaha. That's on Ice Cream Castle album and Jesse Johnson made me laugh at the album pictures because he was wearing a pink suit and pink pants hahahahahahahahahaha.
the Ice Cream Castle cover is a straight up classic
http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG...er=allrovi.com
Morris Day & Prince patched things up a long time ago. there was some friction when The Time reformed as The Original Seven (as you know they weren't allowed to use the original name since Prince owed it and he could do with it what he wanted) but then they patched things up again
Morris has been posting a lot of heartfelt messages about Prince's passing on his FB page. he is truly gutted
these guys go back a long long time. morris and prince were in a band (Grand Central, later renamed Champagne) together in their teens, before prince's solo career. morris' mother was that band's manager
Thanks for posting that information because I didn't know that. Ice Cream Castle album sucks hahahahahahahahahaha. Only songs I like are Jungle Love and The Bird. 3 guys on the Ice Cream Castle album cover were on Jesse Johnson's first solo album. 2 of them are white and one of them is black. I got Jesse's first solo album and I like the songs Be Your Man, I Want My Girl, Just Too Much, Let's Have Some Fun and Can You Help Me. Jesse wore a pink suit on the back of the album hahahahahahahahaha. The album cover is a painting of him and inside the album sleeve picture, he has on pink pants hahahahahahahahahaha. He did videos for Be Your Man and I Want My Girl. I heard his 2nd album Shockadelica and it's terrible LOL. He did a video for Crazay with Sly Stone and that's a nice jam. It's sad that Sly Stone is homeless and lives in a van but that's his fault because he shouldn't have spent all his money. He's lucky to be alive since he used to be a drug addict.
apparently the Gap Band recorded this Prince diss, with full animated video lol, in 1985. I was totally unaware of this song before the day
funky track
I read Charlie Wilson felt slighted by Prince in the seventies when they were doing a signing session in the same wrecka stow
another version of the story goes like this : Prince was throwing a party when he was already famous (first half of the eighties) and the Gap Band showed up. Charlie Wilson was high (he had a serious drug problem back then), which Prince noticed. he had his bodyguards throw Wilson out
the animated video refers to some dumb shit P pulled in 1984 & 1985. his bodyguards beat down a paparazzo and he refused to give a girl an autograph. there was also the matter of him not wanting to join in on the 'We Are The World' record. (He submitted a very nice solo song called '4 The Tears In Your Eyes' instead.) people considered this a big L at the time. there's no reference to that in the video though
really liking this diss even though I'm a Prince fan haha
I didn't know The Gap Band did a video for Disrespect and I love that song. I got their Gap Band VI album that has Disrespect and Beep A Freak is also on the album. Beep A Freak is a nice jam. I remember Charlie Wilson had a drug problem and he said he used to be homeless. His brother Robert died and he played bass guitar. Did you know The Gap Band have videos for Burn Rubber, Early In The Morning, You Dropped A Bomb On Me and Party Train? I love those songs. My mom's brother in Cleveland used to scare me when I was a kid by playing Burn Rubber because at the beginning, a motorcycle noise comes on. So my mom's brother would turn up the sound loud to scare me because he knew I hated motorcycle noise hahahahaha. Rappers Nas and AZ sampled The Gap Band's Yearning For Your Love song on Life's A Bitch song on Nas ILLmatic album. Rap group College Boyz sampled The Gap Band's Humpin song for their Humpin song that they did a video for. Romany Malco who was the lead rapper of College Boyz is a actor now and he was in Think Like A Man 1 and 2 movies with Gabrielle Union, Meagan Good, Taraji Henson and Kevin Hart. He's gonna be in the new movie When The Bough Breaks with Regina Hall and Morris Chestnut. It comes out in September and I saw the previews. The previews look good and I wanna see it. I love Regina and she's hot. She was in Think Like A Man 1 and 2 also.
in 2015 this early configuration of the 1991 album Diamonds & Pearls surfaced
just found out about it now
you can listen to the whole album here https://www.mixcloud.com/ginovannell...e-and-the-npg/
there's some tracks there that didn't make the final cut ('Something Funky This House Comes', the introductory track which gives all of the band members some shine ; also 'Horny Pony' which ended up as a B-side to one of the singles from this album), old outtakes that were supposed to be recycled for this album but again didn't make it in the end ('Schoolyard') and some tracks that sound very different (the ballad 'Insatiable' has a much sparser arrangement ; 'Diamonds & Pearls' has no Rosie Gaines adlibs ; closing track 'Live 4 Love' is sung in a much softer tone)
this was also released as a boot by Silverline. you can buy it on ebay & discogs
all in all an interesting way to revisit this album
2 covers I saw for this

Toxological results have been made public today. They establish that Prince did indeed die of an accidental overdose of painkillers (taken only moments before his death) - in this case Fentanyl. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times stronger than regular morphine. Fentanyl is only available on prescription.
Prince took painkillers because of hip problems.
It is still unclear whether Prince ever really underwent (botched) hip surgery. There was a period in 2011-2012 where he slowed down on his amount of shows. Hardcore fans who followed his career closely (forum : prince.org) speculate this was a time when he could have possibly undergone the surgery. His being a Jehovah's Witness was supposedly a no no for an operation of that kind (blood transfusion related) though.
Yeah I just read about that at Yahoo.com. It's sad that some black singers have died from prescription pills like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Gerald Levert and Sean Levert. Sean died in prison because he owed child support and I saw a Youtube video of him being strapped to a chair by prison guards. He kept screaming no no no no no and I can't believe somebody videotaped that and put it online so people can see it. That's a terrible way to die. I saw The Ojays documentary on Unsung tv show and Sean's dad Eddie Levert who's the lead singer of The Ojays talked about his sons deaths. He said that he wishes Sean would've asked him for money so he could get a lawyer because Sean didn't have money for a lawyer. I think he said he would've helped Sean pay his child support too. The documentary said that Sean's money had ran out and that's why he wasn't paying child support. I wonder why his money ran out because I'm sure he was doing concerts and he should've gotten retirement money. He only did one solo album and he stopped doing Levert group albums with his brother Gerald and their cousin Marc Gordon. Gerald died in his sleep.
I didn't know the Leverts were related to anyone in the O'Jays. thanks for the info. the O'Jays have got some great tunes
surprised prince didnt take cannabis for his pain..
i dont see why the doctors who prescribe these killing drugs are not investigated by authorties..
ahh i know why,, big pharma owns teh justice system(s)
that's a good suggestion
maybe he didn't try it because he was such a control freak. I'm just guessing here, no way to look into the man's head
also I don't know the Jehovah's Witnesses' stand on (what some might consider) drugs
Lee Towers, did you know William Powell of The Ojays died young? He died in 1976 and I forgot how he died. He was the lightskin black man and he was replaced by Sammy Strain. You should see rapper Big Pun's I'm Not A Player video because The Ojays are in it dancing and singing. Big Pun sampled their Darlin Darlin Baby song and he probably had them in the video so they wouldn't sue him for sampling their music hahahahahahahahaha. I was surprised to see The Ojays in the video because I figured they don't like explicit rappers LOL. My dad met The Ojays once when they came to channel 43 where he worked in Cleveland, Ohio. They're from Canton, Ohio but they moved to Cleveland in the 70's. I met Eddie Levert's sons Gerald and Sean before they died when I used to live in Cleveland.
Lolz I just saw this...
The Today Show brought Prince and Beyonce together for an interview in Prince's home; just a Day in the life type of thing, and they are talking to one another and Beyonce says "blah, blah blah something airheaded as a musician, I..." and Prince cuts her off and asks "What did you say?" So she repeats herself, and prince asks her to follow him to the piano. He sits down and plays a chord progression, and then turns to Beyonce and asks "What did I just play?" and she says "I don't know." Prince asks "Can you tell me anything about what I just played?" and Beyonce says no. And Prince says "You sing pretty, you've got a pretty and powerful voices and you dance well. But until you can tell me SOMETHING, ANYTHING about what I just played, don't call yourself a musician."
That's fucken awesome. It irks me how so many non-musicians make millions performing in the music industry. How pop music basically doesn't actually have anything to do with music. I can accept people who don't know a thing about music making a living as performers in the music industry, just do not fucking call yourself a musician. That I can't deal with.
you and Prince would have been kindred spirits in that respect
Just because Beyoncé doesn't know how to play instruments don't mean she isn't a music artist. Every music artist don't have to know how to play music instruments to be considered a music artist.
It's not about her not being able to play instruments . It's about her not knowing a thing about music. It's like rappers who don't even know what the major scale is. That's cool, but don't fucking call yourself a musician.
I never understand why pop singers and similar don't learn a bit of music. Its all helpful to your craft, so why not learn?
But then Beyonces skill is business I guess, she markets the shit out of herself and farms out the actual music stuff to people who know music.
That being said, Prince was a sharp businessman and he still played a bunch of instruments, and wrote and produced his own shit. She can be a musician but just don't use that word to try throw your name in a category with Prince.
I'd be interested to see that video of prince talking about Beyoncé. I searched YouTube and saw a short clip of him saying he was teaching her a few of the important things in music but she knew a lot and praised her. It was a much nicer way of saying Noel's post really.
Beyoncé is a fucking joke, all she does is sing and she has a small army of a creative team on her albums.
StonerSloth, yeah right Beyoncé is a joke. You know you wanna have sex with her just like me hahahahahahahahahaha.
