Another point I made earlier was that the national media doesn't break any real stories, just as you mentioned here, it was a newspaper that put forward what got national attention. I'd say that's probably the case for 99% of any major story that was intially unknown.
It was a paper in San Jose that originally broke the CIA-contra-cocaine connection and it seems to always be a similar situation when a story does get broke wide open.
I would say foreign policy does affect people a lot more than are aware of. How much heartbreak was caused by the crack wars of the 80's? Foreign policy put it into the streets. I'm personally not comfortable with those kinds of things being done. I'm pretty much powerless by myself to cause any real change. All I can do is remind people on hip-hop forums :b
