I guarantee it would not be as good with more songs.
Part of Illmatic's beauty is its length.

You don't know that the album wouldn't have been good if it had more songs.
i liked the album alot...a classic in my opnion...most people say the production is "lack luster" or not very good, but that's because "nas" outhshines the beats (and it would be no better with any others) i LOVE this album!
1. The Genesis
2. N.Y. State of Mind 10/10 Timeless classic
3. Life's A Bitch 9/10 Lyrics was on point but the hook was annoying imo
4. The World Is Yours 10/10
5. Halftime 10/10
6. Memory Lane (Sittin' In Da Park) 10/10
7. One Love 10/10
8. One Time 4 Your Mind 10/10
9. Represent 10/10
10. It Ain't Hard To Tell 10/10
89/90
Classic album.
one time 4 yo mind one time... that shit is the shit... bassline is chillin killin my braincells...
They should've added Deja Vu as a bonus........
There's only one thing y'all missed... Whole album is as one big song, every track matches the one before and the one after. Nas was talking a big tale - listen to the lyrics and it sounds whole time he's talking to the listener what did he see and feel.
Top 1 album of hip-hop ever from "Street's disciple, my mind is triflin'" till "It ain't hard to tell".
BTW who produced Genesis?
Over rated...
Nas has much better tracks then many on here, it was like 3 good songs and the production was horrible. Alot of it sounds dated.
I think most people say this is classic just because everyone else does.
I'd probably hav 2 say that this album is slightly over rated. Don't get me wrong, it's a very dope album and a good listen, but when I first heard it I was expecting something mindblowing and amazing, but I guessed all the reviews had me thinking it was THE album. Despite that the album has no medicore tracks at all, though for me 'one time 4 ur mind' doesnt stand as strong as the others. Me personally, I find It Was Written to be an overall better album, even though some see it as more commercial. I just feel IWW is just creatively better than illmatic, and a really good listen, peace.
yeah, for me, IWW was better as a whole too
but some songs on this album are THE best hip-hop songs ever (The World Is Yours, One Love, It Aint Hard To Tell, Represent,..), and it was actually the biggest highlight of that incredible year (next to Biggie)
He wrote his lyrics when he was 17-20, so that's another shock, cuz its so good...his flow, his voice, his carisma, his lyrics are on point,,,,maybe the almost same subject matter was a little problem, maybe not...but everything is mind blowing...its Hip-Hop...love it
illmatic is like the michael jordan of hiphop. you have to appreciate and praise the album no matter what real talk.
9/10 nearly classic
i call it a 10 because i can listen to it all the way through without skipping tracks, and it has never got old for me. the way an album should be.
i can't believe some people in here.. production on illmatic is "horrible"?? WTF...why even bother.. 10/10 period, it's classic all the way and it sound as dope today as the first time i heard it.
Don't even need to post rating for each track everyone is a 5 it's 10/10 easily
1. Genesis 3/5
2. N.Y state of mind 4/5
3. Lifes a bitch 3/5
4. The world is yours 4/5
5. Halftime 3/5
6. Memory lane (sittin in a park) 3/5
7. One love feat Q-Tip 2/5
8. One time for your mind 4/5
9. Represent 3/5
10. It aint hard to tell 5/5
It's good but not a classic for me 8/10
do you seriously like "i am" better than this album?? anyway, there are already threads about illmatic and i am..
Yeah man, problem
Theres already threads for this, ...I Am & It Was Written, just go into the hip-hop album review archive and there all listed there. But i agree with Claaa7, Illmatic is classic every track 10/10, and its DEFINITLY better than ...I Am. Its all opinions though, but dont get how you could give One Love 2/5?. Just his story telling there and the imagry alone are classic. Just listen to the lyrics and flow on Halftime, its one of my favourite hip-hop tracks ever
classic 10/10 that's all
10/10 CLASSIC ISH!!!!
one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.
yo... fuck you...
i knew this couldnt be a serious review right when i saw you rate the intro. THERES NO RHYMES ON IT. its just az and nas talking. dumb dick. and giving "lifes a bitch" a 3/5????? AZ drops one of the greatest verses of all time on that track... and its a 3/5???
go die.
Memory lane 3/5 .....What a joke
ILLMATIC is overrated. A few tracks are boring and skip-worthy.
one of the most original and best mc's best work
this mothafuck gave 1 luv a 2/5???????
fuck is wrong wit you that shit epitomizes everythin nas is lyrically
I Think He Didn't Even listen to It...
with a name like Bad Boy... He's stuntin. Reviewing Illmatic... why? Did you just hear it now?
who the fuck gave this guy an opinion?
How are Memory Lane and Genesis equal? There's no rapping on Genesis. It's not even a song, how can you rate it? ONE LOVE A 2/5!?!?
NY State of Mind - 5/5
Life's a Bitch - 5/5
The World Is Yours - 5/5
Halftime - 4.5/5
Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park) - 5/5
One Love - 5/5
One Time 4 Your Mind - 3.5/5
Represent - 5/5
It Ain't Hard to Tell - 5/5
It's in my top 5, even with 9 songs.
the dickhead who started this thread probably hasnt even listened to the album and rated genesis better than one love?? wtf do you have down syndrome or some shit?? go die in a fuking fire u retarded mother fucker. this is the greatest album of all time. 5/5 the whole way through, this shit is flawless.
My guess is he got into Nas about a year ago when he heard some of his later material and ain't feeling this type of hip-hop as much. In every review thread he give low ratings to anything Premier has produced and I actually think he rated Nastradamus higher than Illmatic
Damn, thats a pretty shitty review man.
2/5 for 1 Luv.
A great album, no question. Classic.
2/5 for one love and you gave ruff ryders volume 1 3.5/5 ??? NFI
