NFL player who accidentally shot himself gets 2 years in prison (lol)!!!
Former New York Giants wide receiver, Plaxico Burress, pleaded guilty to a weapons charge on Thursday (August 20), and agreed to a two-year prison term for accidentally shooting himself at a Manhattan nightclub.
According to the Associated Press, the NFL free agent pleaded guilty to a lesser charge than he originally faced -- one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon -- as a part of a plea deal that gets his a two-year prison sentence and two years of supervised release.
Earlier this month, he was indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment, and could have received a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years.
After serving his sentence, Burress hopes to resume his NFL career, which could be reduced to 20 months for good behavior. He will be sentenced on September 22, and he'll be sent to prison shortly after.
If all goes well, Burress could be released as early as spring of 2011.
The former NY Giant and his former teammate Antonio Pierce were out at the Latin Quarter nightclub in late November 2008, when a gun tucked into Burress' waistband slipped down his leg and fired, shooting him in the right thigh. Fortunately, the bullet narrowly missed a nightclub security guard who was standing inches away.
He did have a license to carry a concealed weapon in the state of Florida, but it had expired in May 2008. The gun was not licensed in New York or in New Jersey, where Burress lived.
After the shooting Pierce drove Burress to a hospital, then took the gun to his own home in New Jersey where it was later delivered to Burress' home.
The wide receiver would face disciplinary action by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, but none had been given thus far.
In April 2008, the New York Giants released Burress, despite signing a five-year, $35 million contract just before the 2008 season.
