Japan and Germany are nation states. You can speak Japanese and you can speak German. Therefore if you're in German land where germans have made their home for 2000 recorded years and someone asks you to speak German they're not out of their bounds.

But Australia and the US are fucking fake ass countries that don't actually exist. You can't speak australian, you can't identify a generic australian, the name australia implies being south of the people that named it so it's not even central to it's own existence and is literally still a british colony.

I also don't know why you think Japan is a reasonable example of anything except making small things.
