Hip-Hop Cassette Tapes......

Update: 12/19/2009:

Wow, it's been a half a year since my last real update....rest assured, I'm still picking up tapes but I can't take flicks of all the new ones cause' that would take forever....so i'mma just start with what happened today...picking up things as I go...

Today I was in the city coppin' some vinyl at one of my favorite spots....It had been a long day and I had been in the neighboring suburb scavenging for cassettes with no luck....

I stopped and ate a bomb ass Cheese steak b4 I walked into the spot....I actually found some dope vinyl along with one cassette...the tape I found and copped was 3rd Bass's "Derelicts Of Dialect" LP....their 2nd album from 1991 that would prove to be their final effort as a three man group...

It kinda pissed me off that I had to shell out $2.95 for the tape, but hey, the spot's system was flawless...they only display the cases and if you wanna cop a cassette you have to get it from up front where they have em' all filed...LOL, a surefire way to detour cats like myself....really though, they didn't have anything else I woulda wanted...there was a UTFO tape, i forget which one though and a Yo Yo tape......

I just recently got ahold of Bobby Digital in Stereo on cassette by a fluke lol. My buddy for some odd reason owned it (he's a metalhead) and he gave it to me for free lol.

first up I got the joints I copped (yes, copped) out in L.A.

I was out there for this past new year holiday and while i had some down time I ran up in this spot called Pak's Cassettes on Rosecrans Ave. that was inside a swap meet in Gardena (near West Compton). The little Asian woman running the booth was on her shit! LOL, had tons of dope tapes, everything i would wanna cop but she was askin top dollar...I can't blame her tho, everything was brand new and sealed...I ended up dropping $40 bucks on the 5 tapes you see here....I know that's an obscene amount, but I had some paper and I was out there grabbin vinyl and tapes, so I said fuck it....My only regret was not grabbin the ATCQ tapes that she had and the Screwball "Y2K" tape she had...damnit!

Getting that Lord Finesse was a big deal...I'm a huge DITC fan and have been getting all of the members solo joints and that was one I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever get up on....I paid next to nuthin for the Gravediggaz joint...bout $4....the Lord Finesse I dropped $10 on and had to bargain with the guy....Not really sure if there's a signifigance behind the Finesse tape being black...like whether it's a special edition or something....if someone else has it, please holla and let me know if this was the normal release color or what....


I've gotten other new joints. from A+, Big Pun, Krs-One, Easy Mo Bee, Channel Live and a Wu-Tang cassette that I think might be one of the most elaborate bootlegs ever that i'll flick up later, just don't got time at the moment....I'm bout to cop that first Organized Konfusion tape, I'm excited about that and will post that too...

I gotta also inform ya'll about the extremely shitty conditions that I'm experiencing tryin to find decent tapes just out and about at thrift stores and whatnot...I haven't come across any in that type of setting in a grip...prolly since before the new year....might try looking again tommorrow....

This is a great thread D O, I'll be sure to rep you for it. I like the memories by looking at the rows of tapes and the video you posted talking about them. It's good to travel and visit thrift shops every now & then to take yourself from all this digital downloading madness we have today, it's a great way to experience life. I used to live in Cali, the Pasadena/West Covina area.


You should try going to record conventions to find tapes, check this calendar for upcoming US dates: http://www.vinyltimes.com/record-shows.htm

Then there's people you should check outside the US who are collecting tapes still to this day, like a number of Japanese record stores and European hip hop fans on eBay. Soundtable Records in Japan was one, but their site no longer exists

I still cherish full ablums on tape, but the most favorite ones from my collection are the limited addition promo tapes and maxi singles with bonus songs. I used to hang out at a radio station in the early-mid 90's and the host would give me bags of promo tapes sent to him from labels.

used to live in Pasadena eh? That's actually where the funeral I was attending was at (Forest Lawn Cemetary is a gorgeous resting place) and where a grip of my family stays now...I was staying all the fuck the way down in Torrance while visiting though...don't ask, I fucked up a hotel reservation....lol...

yeah, I've been to a few specialty shops here and there and I've been to a grip of Vinyl conventions too and more often than not I don't really see much I want...maybe it's cause the majority of em' I visit are in or around Denver....

I've copped some tapes off some kids in Europe...they know their stuff when it comes to cassettes and vinyl! Never have messed with any Japanese collectors though....I got a few lil' secret store resources that I found and order from frequently that are in the U.S.

thanks for peeping the youtube vid, that was the collection in it's infancy though....I been meaning to do a new one and throw it in here....stay tuned!

Big Time props on that Prince Paul Promo, love that mix and have posted it on my blog b4...that's a hard piece to come by....much respect on that Maniacal Moments Beatnuts album sampler too...I don't really mess too much with promo stuff, but even I had to snatch that up!

01/27/10:

Man as soon as I was complaining in my last post about a lot of the tape spots/thrift stores around my way going dry and not havin shit I stumble into an old spot and come up on three gems....

I was out diggin' for Vinyl and got that frequent urge to seek out new sources for it, so I hit up all of my old stomping grounds that hadn't closed down in the past 6 months....

I went to a few thrift stores and a record store and managed to come up on 6 records and was fixing to call it a night when I decided to hit up this new Goodwill that had recently been built around the way from the crib....it just got built like a year and a half ago and it never really has anything so I don't frequent it much, but tonight I was semi bored and they always do have one solid stack of about 70 records....

so i went in and headed over to where they keeps the vinyl...thumbed through it and found nuthin', then for some reason I went over and checked out they lil' tape section, I mean why not right? I was there anyway..Usually 9 times outta 10 they will have nuthin, absolutely nuthin' in terms of tapes I want...I saw a Menace To Society soundtrack tape that I picked up and scanned for a minute while I tried to recall if I already had it, then I saw that distinct name....."Nine".....I snatched it up and then seen the Mic Geronimo, which I also gathered in quickly and finally after a thorough scan of the racks I saw that Cella Dwellas, which I was dazzled by, you just don't find that tape in thrift stores man....

they all were in great condition and had great cases and they wanted a grand total of 50 cents for em', which I happily forked over....

I was blown away by my finds man....3 dope mid 90's releases, 2 of which ("The Natural" and "Realms N' Reality") are widely considered classics

Those are some good finds D O, I like looking at the tapes because it reminds me of good memories of life from that time like listening to alot of college hip hop radio and traveling.

Those 3 albums all have some overlooked music on 'em, especially Nine, I wonder what happened to him? Lifecheck by Mic Geronimo was always pretty ill to me, classic Beatminerz, and Masta I.C. is one of Buckwild's crown jewels in his production catalog.

Lookin at that Cella Dwellas reminds me of the promo cassette for that album which I lost years ago, it had a dark cardboard paper cover and some unreleased songs from the album. I still have a copy on mp3 fortunately.

I think you should start taking pics of the actual visits and store locations you go to when buying you're tapes, sort of like the photo docs of DJ Shadow. Those are always interesting to me, it's a good way to store those digging memories too. Here's a Japanese record store blog that does it: Soul Clap Records Japan

Is there any sound privileges over digital format (CD and mp3) in listening tapes on a good system with good headphones ?
Its like you will get deep sound listening vinyl instead of CD (for example) !
So what about collation between tape and CD ? Will you get something special in sound of tape ?

really most audiophiles will likely tell you that cassette is the weakest format to listen to music in....

it's Lo-Fi for sure, but in my time listening to em' over the years I've noticed that in a car stereo a Hip-Hop cassette tape always sounds better than a CD....

that's just an opinion of course, but many heads will confirm this...I don't know what it is, maybe the way the music is compressed on a tape or somethin', but in the whip nuthin sounds iller....

Also in addition to their special Lo-Fi sound I always was an avid tape supporter because of their durability--you treat a tape right, keep it in it's case and in a place with a reasonable temperature and are careful about what players you play it in, that cassette will last you 25 years or longer...I own tapes that are still workin' good after 35+ years man...

I love that whole Mic Geronimo album man....the production is classic and the features are too...one of the first times I had heard Royal Flush...

1/29/10:

LOL, My recent luck continues....

Yo, I had to drop off a friend today and was out and about and like I usually do after a big score at a particuliar thrift store I decided to return to the scene and see if there was anything new at the store where I found the Mic Geronimo, The Cella Dwellas and Nine tapes...

LOL, sure enough I found two more joints tonight that I regard as pretty hard to come by for basically nuthin'...

I walked in and went to the tape rack (which I noticed had been re-arranged since last time) and started scanning....I instantly saw the name "Big Noyd" and reached for it with the swiftness....I turned the tape over and there it was; "Episodes Of A Hustler"...one of my fav. albums from a Queens artist ever and Noyd's crowning achievement as an MC....It was in flawless condition...I was amazed...I looked even more and next found two tapes that I already had in Group Home's "Livin' Proof" and Busta Rhymes' "When Disaster Strikes", but scooped up anyway...

...then as I did my last look thru I saw Shyheim's "The Lost Generation", LOL...I just grinned and palmed it.... .50 friggin cents for a mint copy...

I shoved the Group Home and Busta tapes in my pocket and paid the dollar for just the Noyd and Shyheim....any guesses about where I'mma visit again in a day or so? I'm beginning to suspect that someone donated an ill collection to this thrift store that they're slowly but surely putting out every so often...

yo Big DO, if you ain't got that MOP tape then definitely cop that shit. i believe you're mostly interested in albums but that's the "Handle Ur Bizness" EP, featuring 8 tracks and released in 1998 - only 1 of the songs made the 'First Family 4 Life' LP so that shit is essential for any MOP collector!! i was trying to get my hands on that for a while and just copped the CD recently.

This thread remembers me how ill the whole culture used to be.... Strange I know , but looking at those cassete tape covers and all that takes me back to them good days even though I rarely bought a cassette tape because I've always been buying compact discs ....

Update!!!

2/15/10:

I was all the way on the westside of my city at my new gym tonight working out and afterward I was broke so my usual routine of going and grabbing a Vitamin Water XXX and having some Sushi wasn't gonna happen....I decided instead to hit up a thrift store that was nearby and waste some time.

I didn't at all expect to find anything but much to my appeasement I did, as a matter of fact I found 3 tapes, 2 of which I didn't previously own...

I had to scavenge through a messy tape area that was filled with singles for a second, but after some scanning I saw one of my Fav. Cocoa B's albums "The Rude Awakening"....I then saw a copy of The Beatnuts "Stone Cazy", something I already have but didn't mind having another copy of....then I saw the find of thie night AKA Funkdoobiest's "Brothas Doobie" a cassette that I had come dangerously close to ordering a few times, but thought better of....

The move was made w/o any problems, it was pretty dead in there so it was kind of auspicious and tricky, plus I didn't have my usual attire on and was only wearing a t-shirt and basketball shorts AKA workout gear...nevertheless I finesse'd things and made my way out....

picked up the 1990 classic and Lord Finesse's debut "Funky Technician"....

jawn featured early work from future beatmaking staples, namely DJ Premier who produced 6 tracks.

really a great find, I treasure all the Wild Pitch releases I find on tape....

on the subject of whats at the top of the page -asking about the quality of tapes to CD - its true amongst audiophiles that tapes are the weakest but that lo-fi is really something else.It just depends on what you want out of your listening experience. YO! I get tapes to bump the low end a LOT better than CD's though. idk why.

Lo-fi is ill, no argument there....A lot of Hip-Hop fans from the 90's know this...it's just recently that digital technlogy has gotten so good and readily accessible, it's sort of pushed out recording music in the analog formats, i.e. 4 track & 8 track cassette recorder ADAT tapes, reel to reel tapes...

I still love that old lo-fi, crunchy 12 and 16 bit sound a lot and I try to explain to ppl what that's all about, but often folks these days are just about conveinance; they just wanna be able to take a whole music library with em' wherever they go and that's fine, I just am from a different school of thought...I came up around records, cassette and 8 track tapes...these new kids don't know anything but the digital un-full sound of MP3's coming out they ear buds or from their shitty lap top speakers....

bump it, I'm here so I'mma show ya'll what i grabbed earlier this week...

a trifecta of Cube tapes, and IMO his finest 3 albums...

bumped into all three of em' at the same time in the same thrft store so I was thinking most likely they were apart of someone's collection...Not 100% sure, but it's a strong suspicion...

Don't know how anyone could throw these out man, easly Cube's seminal work and some of Hip-Hop's most dangerous album's lyrically...

caught a nice lil' gem today while I was out diggin' for vinyl....

chillin on the tape shelf above the McCrary "Emerge" LP I copped was a great looking copy of King Tee's "IV Life" album...

This album is widely regarded as the Likwit Crew member's most diverse musically and featured a bunch of sampling....

a dope feature I noticed off top was on the song text on the actual cassette itself...each tracklisting has the sample used right there on the tape...I wonder if he just got totally raped on those royalty claims, lol....

Rhymefest is that dude, and yes he'll see some good sales on the cassette tape because cassette culture is starting to comeback a lil' in the urban market and yeah, a lot of cats in prison still order new titles out of special catalogs that have them in cassette version....

Made a return to an old haunt I hadn't hit up in awhile today, really they didn't have much, but I was able to spot one lil' gem that all of ya'll gotta know about...

What I spotted on a lower rack next to some shitty DVD's was a nice looking copy of Canada's Dream Warriors debut "And Now The Legacy Begins"....most of you will prolly finish reading that last sentence and have zero clue who these cats are, maybe some of you do know, but for everyone else lemme break down some things bout these two:

consisting of King Lou and Capital Q (and later Spek), these bruthas from the T.Dot released this album on Island & 4th & B'way Records(American release) records back in 1991 and recieved a ton of critical acclaim and some pretty friggin decent sales too....

"And Now The Legacy Begins" was one of the first real breakout Jazz-infused and alternative Hip-Hop albums ever and employed heavy sampling alongside Lou and Q's artistic and conscious rhymes...the album got rave reviews from a bunch of music publications in the U.S. and canada and even sold in upwards of 800,000 units...

When I saw the tape just chillin there I admit I didn't know everything about the record, but I did recognize the name from their 3rd album "The Master Plan", which does get written about and a good deal of love on 90's Hip-Hop blogs...

I can sell you that Y2K tape in near mint condition!

I'm so glad that tapes went away because i used to get tired of rewinding and fast forwarding when i wanted to hear a song and skip a song i didn't like. I'm upset that LL Cool J's Walking With A Panther cd doesn't have the songs Crime Stories and Jack The Ripper because those songs are on the tape. I also don't like Nas's Pray song not being on the Iam cd but it's on the tape. Nas doesn't rap on the song, only Bravehearts rap on it. I like Pray song. I'm glad i got Death Row's greatest hits double cd that has 2Pac songs Pain and Cradle To The Grave from Above The Rim soundtrack because those songs aren't on Above The Rim cd but they're on the tape.
