Im totally focused on the Champions League now tbh. The league would be nice of course but as long as Chelsea dont win it (who I always saw as the danger team even when EVERYONE wrote them off stupidly) im not MAJORLY mad.
Of course all this changes if we get knocked out the CL.
But as long as we're in it im sure CL is the priority. And SAF has even said that himself.

Added to all that you can be sure the players wanted to play in the UEFA cup too. It has sapped their morale being knocked out now, we all know its no CL but its European football but it looks very good if you win it. Its a European trophy still.
Obviously the board were telling O Neill that they wanted the CL money more. The fans didnt.
Its the same as the Athletico Madrid scenario this season, they were IN the CL knockout stages, but the Board told the manager to concentrate on 4th place in the league, LOL. So the players got real pissed that they werent at full strength int he CL games (i think Forlan got rested), , and their morale is now crushed, and they might not even get 4th now either.
exactly. players play to win. and win what they are in now. they arent in the business of playing for years down the road. all it takes is something as easy as not trying to win 1 game in russia and it has derailed all that they worked for all season.
i understand thats what a coach is there for, to make those sort of decisions. but you need to be realistic with your expectations as well. and i dont think playing your best players for 1 game in russia would have tired out a team so much they still couldnt get 4th. but what it has done is mentally stick a fork in them, apparently.
teams should just go out and try to win every game. whenever they choose which tournament to concentrate on they fuck up. Villa is a prime case, and there are many others. I mean it sort of undermines the UEFA cup as well because if a team like Villa doesnt really want to win it, does UEFA expect any other team to bother with it.
