Here is Australia you are scaled according to how people at your school do as well (WHY?!) so a person's mark often to a degree represents how much they paid in school fees. For example at some selective schools 90% of the students get a mark over 90% (that means they scored in the top 10% of the state). In our business studies class neither of us got under a 95 for any of the assessments through the year, but ended up with an 85 for our marks. Now you could say the teacher assessed us easily EXCEPT he also taught a high school class, no one in that class got anywhere near our marks (he said they were getting around 70's 80's at best) through the year and still they ended up with some marks around ours. The day the marks were released that teacher even called me and my sister and said he had no idea what had happened.
Stuff like that pisses me off. I worked for that course. Now I am in a good university course...but it was a little harder coz of stuff like that...but what can you do.
Also, as poor people, we often have added problems of unstable families, also the examples we see around us don't encourage study. I am at University now and when I applied it was a daunting process. I applied with my sister, but most people have siblings, or friends of the familt who have been to university and have some idea of what the deal is. Growing up I seriously never thought of going to university. Why would I? No one I knew had been.
Another problem is being poor gives you reality young. And that can often lead a person to THINK for themselves. Our education system is not designed for people who can actually think. It is designed for people who can shut up and be told what to memorize.
I do not agree that the poor should not study. Infact, that has often been my motivation not to give up. Even though the education system can be frustrating I am glad I have stuck to it. Not just for a career but for my own self-respect.
I think us poor people should work extra hard. My kids will be taught better than me to value education. I think we also have to make sure we keep thinking. Coz that's our advantage. That's the bit the rich kids can't buy. We have more drive, more reason than any of those rich kids. But we lack DISCIPLINE.
I doubt the education system will change anytime soon. The Prussian mind-washing system we have in place is all most people think of when they think of education. There is no reason why though, we can not be free thinkers, and also jump through their hoops, in fact we should be able to do it better than anyone else.

yo what state do u live in man? here in nsw theres some shit that like marks up your hsc test - or school certificate for year 10 - arent 100% for your overall mark, i forget because i got expelled at the start of year 12 in 04, so im remembering shit in 02 when i did the SC, but basically theres all this shit that weighs up your mark - i never studied for science, i could give a fuck about science, i dont kno shit on science, but i still got a mark of 70 ...Quote:

Yeah, my fucking English I could only take standard coz I was at TAFE (I love English too) and I got like 74 for it! It was the first year of the new system and my teacher said no one got over 80 for it....they capped the fucking marks the standard people could get on a part of the exam....but wait for the stupidity - the test had two parts one was the same as the advanced English AND that's the bit they capped!
How the fuck does that make sense? My marks are limited to a certain mark, even if I answer the SAME questions better than someone else just coz they in the advanced class.
But they didn't touch my maths and yeah I think my Physics was the only thing I was happy with...I think that may have even gone up a little. But I got totally fucked on Business, English and Legal :| oh well what can you do..?

BTW I saw a news show a while back where a guy applied to the Board of Studies to get his raw marks....he got a UAI of like 90s and his raw marks were rubbish...he went on the news coz he didn't think it was fair he got those marks he didn't deserve.

these students do well because they are from families which place high emphasis on career and wealth, as oppose to other values. success does breed success , although its a cliche. partly its about the opportunities people get but also about the attitude which their family has.

When i talked about nerds at my topic that got deleted, i forgot to mention Steve Urkel on Family Matters tv show. Seeing a black teenager nerd on a tv show was the first time i had seen a black nerd on tv. Blacks don't usually see black nerds on tv because most of us have been taught that it's not cool to be intelligent and that's wack to me. I wish had a lot of intelligence like a nerd. Steve's character was something else. I thought it was phony how he would always go to Laura's house to bother her everyday when she didn't wanna be bothered with him. Webmasters who are in charge of banning people from websites make me sick because people shouldn't be ashamed for having different opinions. Did Ramesh say something that was outta line that caused him to get banned? I read his topic about why are white men so feminine. I agree with the stuff he said regarding that. Why was that topic of his closed? I've been banned from rap group Onyx's website, rapper Masta Ace's website, r&b singer R Kelly's website for speaking my opinion and i don't appreciate getting banned because my opinion isn't the same as somebody else's. I've dissed these music artists music on their websites that i mentioned and like i said, i don't appreciate getting banned because of what i said. I can't help it that i think some of the music they've done has been wack. I'm not the one recording the music.
