It's been a while since the Toronto Maple Leafs did any cashing in on the ice, but as ever it's a different story at the box office.
According to a recent survey, a Leafs game remains the most expensive night out in the National Hockey League – and it's not even close.
According to Chicago-based Team Marketing Report's annual survey released this week, Maple Leafs games at the Air Canada Centre carry an average ticket price equivalent to $117.49 (U.S.) this season, more than double the league's average price of $51.41.
As for the "Fan Cost Index" – TMR's trademark calculation of the aggregate price for a family of four to attend a game – Toronto checks in at a league-high $628.29 (Canadian) or $585.57 (U.S.), an 8.4 per cent jump after last year's figure of just over $411 (U.S.) was adjusted due to a calculating error, the organization said in a release.
The figures also are adjusted due to the changes in the exchange rate, from last year when the Canadian dollar was worth about 87 cents (U.S.) to 93 cents for this year's calculations. TMR officials did not respond to an email request for clarification.
TMR's Fan Cost Index includes the price of four "general seat" tickets, parking, two small beers, four soda pops, four hot dogs, two game programs and two caps.
The Montreal Canadiens, who do not participate in TMR's survey of NHL teams, are No. 2 on that Fan Cost Index list for this year, far back from the Leafs at the equivalent of $412.12 (U.S.) for a night out. At the other end of the scale, four Phoenix Coyotes fans can enjoy a game for $221.80 and the average cost to see the Tampa Bay Lightning is $221.04.
With only 12 of the NHL's 30 teams raising ticket prices this season, according to TMR, the Leafs' 10 per cent increase over last year's number is the league's highest.
The New York Rangers posted the second highest increase – up 7.1 per cent to an average ticket cost of $58.57. (A seat in Montreal, at an average $72.18 in U.S. figures, is the second priciest in the league.)
The TMR numbers are at odds with those published by the Leafs, which trumpeted a 3.5 per cent increase this season, after holding the line the year before. But the general trending up reinforces independent estimates of the club's robust finances. Forbes.com calculated the values of NHL franchises in U.S. dollars last November and put the Leafs at a league-best $448 million.
Three seasons ago, TMR pegged the Leafs at seventh in the NHL, with an average ticket price of $49.52 (U.S.). A year later the price jumped to the top of the league at $88.88, and the Leafs haven't looked back since.
But it wasn't all ringing cash registers and boffo business: The Leafs' average $184.94 (U.S.) for a "premium ticket" this season actually trails the Rangers, whose plushest thrones at Madison Square Garden would set you back an average of a whopping $249.88.
Readers of thestar.com were quick to react to the latest Fan Cost Index when the figures were posted Friday evening. "If (TV host David) Letterman did a top 10 list of things that the Leaf ownership cared about, the first 10 would be `to make more money,'" one reader wrote.
"Good for Leaf management," wrote another. "If the fans are willing to support this team blindly year after year they deserve to be taken to the cleaners."

that was the closes 4-1 win i have ever seen. ottawa had to have hit 4 posts in that game, guerin's goal was from a fluke bounce off the boards and tyler kennedy's first goal was flukey too. i thought it was a great game, except ottawa seemed to have given up in the 3rd period evne when they were only down by 2 goals.
Ottawa Has Suprised Me I Thought With The Loss Of Heatley They Were Giving Up The Season To Rebuild But There Pretty Good. They Played The Rangers Tough I Thought It Was Gonna Be A Walk In The Park.
Rangers Still Have Only Lost That Game To The Peguins The Rangers Always Start Off Fast Which I Like Get As Many Pts. Accumulated Earlier As You Can So You Have Some Insurance If You Hit A Rough Patch Which They've Also Done A Lot In The Last Couple Of Seasons.
Oh And Avery Is The Man 2 Goals Last Night When He's In The Lineup The Record Is So Much Better Then When He's Out.

i caught the last few minutes of that game on center ice. going into overtime they recapped the game, and i couldn't believe they were down 5-0. i couldn't fucking believe it. it was really fucking suprising to see that the united center was still packed. i can't believe none of the fans left that game.
