Where im from, the authorities in the 17th century saw the terror of inhumane witchunts in europe at the time.
They decided more humane ways of indentifying witches.
For example drowning of a witch in a river with rocks for weight. If the person floated and did not sink he/she was a witch, but did not get neccessarely executed but had somekind of punishment. If he/she sunk, they pulled the person out of the river when he was about to drown. There was cases where the accused did not get sunk.
Another way to identify witch was to burn them. They chopped the head off first and burned the corpse afterwards. The witch could ressurrect if he/she was for real.
