Maybe your monitors ain't that great. Or also the placement is a factor, the may be too low and you an't hear your low end or too high and you can't hear your high end. Plus your room ain't treated so you may have a lot of early reflections which fuck everything up when your monitoring. When you mix and shit, if you want the best opinion on your mix usually your car is the best place. But try listening to your mix on as many different things as you can, clock radio speakers, ipod, home stereo etc. But ya, car is the best. you got to think of where it is people listen to the shit the most. Headphones are wack, unless you have studio monitor headphones. And even then you still have to be aware of frequency response and all that shit.
