That Black Woman and Child one is indeed a standout. Thats why I added that to the list of 10 even though it came out 15-20 years after the other classics.

I think thats all you need for recommendations and you should just branch out from there. However I looked through my collection and I left out some REALLY important ones:

Those are different. They are more dancehall than roots. Many Moods of Moses, Til Shiloh, and My Xperience are my favourite albums from each of those artists.

you should check out mind control, its a great album, if im not mistaken it won the best reggae album grammy in 07 as well.

straight up, stephen's production on this (and pretty much whatever else he does) is crazy. all the marley's are crazy with the lyrics as well, check into them all, i'd say all of damian's and stephen's first, but ziggy, kymani, juju, etc all come correct

thanks for the reccomendations, does anyone know of any albums similar to black woman and child by sizzla, i like the toasting style a lot and that and welcome to jamrock are basically the only albums the artist toast. im lovin the albums so far, i still gotta dl the later recommended ones

Any albums with deep dub production that feature lots of toasting or ragga chants? I know Lee Perry/The Upsetters sometimes had toasters, but I'm out of my depth with this genre.

It's not traditional reggae by a long shot, nor even your average dancehall, but I love The Bug's work

Pressure is a bit more dancehall, but with some seriously ragged and electronic beats. Some very energetic and intense ragga tracks with Daddy Freddy, Toastie Taylor, Rootsman & He-Man, and Wayne Lonesome, and some slow atmospheric dub tracks with Roger Robinson's dub poetry and Paul St. Hilaire (Tikiman)'s singing.


However the real masterpiece is London Zoo:

Obviously it's much more influenced by the grime and dubstep scenes (mainly the tracks with Killa P, Flowdan, and Warrior Queen), but it really emphasizes the dancehall/ragga roots of those genres while still keeping the aggressive fast-paced drums & ragga chants of grime and the subwoofer pummeling bass drops of dubstep. Also a few more traditional dancehall toasts and reggae crooning (the songs with Tippa Irie, Ricky Ranking and Roger Robinson) over dark riddims. I'm sure more than a few of you already know about this album since it got rave reviews and I'm sure even more of you are already familiar with "Skeng" and "Poison Dart," so I'll spare you that.

Basically this stuff is the reason I'm looking for earlier (anything pre-dubstep/grime) that has toasting or ragga chants over dub production. I like the deep atmosphere of dub, but I'm not a huge fan of plain old reggae singing, and I love the vocals in dancehall and ragga, but I find a lot of dancehall albums to be too one-dimensional for me (even though Buju has some pretty consistent stuff).

i don't know if it fits, but roots manuva is a great reggae/hip hop artist.

I've heard some of his stuff, and it's not too bad, but never got super into it. I also have checked out New Flesh for Old, Toastie Taylor's hip-hop group which has a similar vibe. Still, nothing too ground-breaking, even though Toastie is has one of the best rap/toasting voices I've ever heard. Dude needs to get on some serious shit (more Bug collabos please).

I don't know shit about it, but i'm getting into it a bit now and trying to learn the history.

So, apart from Bob Marley, i'd appreciate some advice on who are the artists that made the bomb shit.

My favorite reggae is roots and dub from the 70s. In no particular order, here are some of my absolute favorite reggae records, and I highly recommend all of them.

Burning Spear - "Marcus Garvey"
Augustus Pablo - "East of the River Nile"
The Upsetters - "Super Ape"
Culture - "Two Sevens Clash"
Lee "Scratch" Perry - "Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Cornbread"
The Congos - "Heart of the Congos"
Max Romeo & The Upsetters - "War ina Babylon"
Yellowman - "Mister Yellowman" (early dancehall stuff)
The Abyssinians - "Satta Massagana"
Hugh Mundell - "Africa Must Be Free by 1983"
Scientist - "Scientist Rids the World of the Curse of the Evil Vampires"

Check out some Barrington Levy and Tenor Saw records too. They were both more singles than albums artists, and the tracklists on his albums tend to have a lot of duplicate tracks. They're both dope as hell. You've probably heard Tenor Saw's "Ring the Alarm" before. It's his take on the classic "Sleng Teng" dancehall riddim.

Also, this is quite a bit newer, but a group called the Easy Star All-Stars put out a full album dub cover of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" called "Dub Side of the Moon". It's way better than it has any right to be, and I recommend that as well.

Madlib's "420 Chalice All-Stars" mix is 80 minutes of top-notch reggae in a lot of different styles. It's a nice survey.

This is only scratching the surface of reggae, but I think this gives you a lot of good starting points.

Yeah Junior Reid is dope. I mentioned that Barrington Levy and Tenor Saw's careers were defined more by singles than by albums. This is true of most dancehall artists, Junior Reid included. I don't know his albums/greatest hits collections that well, so I'd just youtube him and see what stuff of his you like.
