Illmatic is overrated because the original versions of them songs are better than what was released, 36 Chambers is overrated cos the demo tracks are so much better.........theres reasons why the original versions did'nt make it to the album......one of which (and anybody that makes music should agree) is the fact that, if it takes so long to make an album, certain songs/beats are evntually gonna get tired to the artist &/or producers, before the album is finished, but they might like the lyrics, so they either remix the track or re-do the track, money also does come into it, & samples cost a hell of alot of it, sometimes samples can't be cleared - meaning, you can not release it, so a new beat has to be made - and that is fact.....which is possibly one of the reasons for Cuban Linx 2 taking so fucking long - you can release those tracks for free but you can't sell them........you non-music making dudes probably wont understand this, but there is a politics to the music "industry" - industry means its a business, lots of money to be made, BUT why spend a million if you can't garauntee it'll make a million ?? for the love of making music ?? fuck that, if you made music "for the love" you would'nt sell it, you'd give it away for free, or as cheap as possible to cover costs.....but seen as how its a "business", you have to make money, otherwise you become obsolete..

end of the day, the version of Ready To Die that i went out & bought on vinyl & cd in 1994, is a fucking classic album and in no way overrated, if the original versions (which i've not heard apart from maybe 2 songs) is so much better, only reinforces the original releases classic status...

if anybody has the original versions, please could you hit me up with it, because i'd really love to hear it, peace.

I think you're wrong on this Whers, i think you should listen closer to "Ready to Die" because that's definitely not the ordinary shit that the average street rapper spit with gloss. Biggie poured his fucking heart over that album; he said things that everyone was scared to say but many feel and he said it on a platinum selling album... he didn't glorify the street life for the most part, you should go back and listen again

..he even made the closing song about how much he hate himself and wanna commit suicide. this is also mixed with the more happy times for him in songs like "Juicy" and "Me & My Bitch" - like all persons a life got heavy ups and downs and he covered the whole spectra on that album... A even sharper version of what Eminem did with "Marshall Mathers LP" which I know you love. This is an extremely complex album by a man that was torn apart between the glamour and street life and showed his very humorous side ("the first time I saw you, you looked so good i'll suck on your daddy's dick) together with the hatred he sometime felt for himself and his life.

I don't know why Holocaust always has to get mixed up in the thread from someone when you state your opinion but since it's already been touched on I gotta say that Holocaust is so far away from Biggie as an MC in any spectrum but I definitely respect your opinion though.... for me "Ready to Die" is prolly in a top-5 hip-hop albums of all time.

It's just two different opinions and tastes in music. Some people prefer the clever wordplay, metaphors, obscure subject material etc from rappers like Holocaust and some people prefer the swagger, delivery, mic presence (and obviously good lyrics still) etc of someone like Biggie.

Obviously it's not actually that simple, people like stuff from both sides, but that's pretty much what it comes down to. Lol @ how angry and defensive some people get when someone disagrees with them.

nah I don't think so, he would probably have gone the same way as Jay-Z and Nas - if you look at "Life After Death" the production started getting glossier and glossier (don't get me wrong that album is a fucking banger too). people get money hungry, just look at Fat Joe who used to be a real respected hardcore underground rapper down with one of the illest crews hip-hop has ever seen (almost on Wu's level) [and i'm not talking Terror Squad] and look at him now - i think the same would have been the case for Pun.

All I have said is I think Biggie is overrated...I might actually like the album.
