well back in the day it wasn't as easy for major labels to exploit hip hop, which is why a lot of the major talent back in the day were major label cats. cuz the labels sought after who was hot (nas is a good example). hip hop hadn't become about trends or cliches until around the mid 90s.
with the exception of people like MC Hammer, vanilla ice, young MC...
