As an Australian I believe that the invasion of this land through western colonialisation was wrong, not only did it kill many people at the time but also people continue to suffer as a result. Let me emphasise, that the continued treatment of the Native communities across the world is Inhumane.
I say this as a HUMAN BEING, as a concerned Individual who can see daily the product of injustice on people. The treatment of the Aboriginal communities in Australia is not acceptable, much like the treatment of the Native Americans. If you look at the trouble spots around the world you would see that they are all the product of western imperialist pursuits.
I am not saying that we can simply turn back time and change what has happened. I am not suggesting that we all pick up and leave, that our "lease is up". But we must acknowledge where we have gone wrong in our history, and realise that we cannot justify our wrongs. Worse then committing a wrong is to make excuses to justify it.
What I am suggesting however is that we recognise the history of the lands in which we now live. We recognise the blood that was shed and we recognise the injustice that was done and continues against the original inhabitants of these continents of ours. We must recognise the consequences of our actions, of our governments, of everything in which we do.
We must STOP treating these human beings as second class citizens and give them their rights.
There needs to be a radical change in the ways in which our societies are structured… Human beings need to be the priority, not the economic interests of the minority.
I thought that in a democracy it was our right to speak up in the face of wrong. I am sorry if you feel that voices achieve nothing, but I have more faith in humanity then that.
BTW, One last comment to leave you with...
My people consists of the entire Human race.
