as to the lawsuits technically he can still pardon himself from federal cases, right? I mean in the way a president would grant a pardon to a private person, only that person being himself. that would be a first in US history though

That could all be true. My line of thinking was there would be a split in Republican party going forward. Some who want Trump and his brand. Then some who want to go back to your more traditional candidates.
I have a feeling once Trump leaves office he will be throwing people under the bus. And if he or for the love of god his kids want to run. Their will be division. Elected official in the Republican party are going want to move on. While these Trump fans want more of his shtick.
I could see him or one of his own running as independent and taking votes away.

So I don't know why people try to use government power against each other but only to control others and in controlling others you allow them to control you.
The idea of the Constitution, in my opinion, was that government was merely a necessary evil that must be restricted and contained and checked and balanced as much as possible.
