Myth 1: Most blacks live in the hood or the ghetto

There is a difference between ethnic concentration, and high crime of violence prone urban areas. You don’t see this distinction when turning on the 11 o’clock news. You won’t get this nuanced distinction from many music videos either.
Myth 2: Blacks have low educational attainment rates
There is an often repeated claim that “there are more black men in prison than in college.” Besides being statistically wrong, it also bolsters the second biggest myth about black Americans: it is a myth that blacks on the whole have low educational attainment rates. While there are statistics that point to less black men graduating college or lower college graduation rates. The absolute numbers of blacks attending college has increased over time and continues to increase.
Moreover, the number of black Ph.D. Holders have more than doubled since the 1980s, much higher rate than the rate of black population increase. This fact does not get much media interest since the image of well-adjusted black Phd holders taking care of and providing for their families generates less buzz and money than images of spinners, liquor, and gold chains in a hiphop video.
Myth 3: Blacks are economically depressed
Another common misperception of African-Americans is, that on the whole, blacks are economically depressed or poor in the United States. Once again, media crime reports from the ‘ghetto,’ hip-hop videos and gangsta rap do not show an accurate picture of black American wealth as a whole. It is projected that based on purchasing power alone, African-Americans eclipse all African countries and many emerging countries. African-American purchasing power is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2012. This figure outstrips most other countries GDP.
The numerous portrayals in the mainstream media of black poverty and the seemingly “permanent” underclass do not reflect the overall wealth of African-Americans in the USA. If the African-American portion of the US GDP was separated from the rest of thhe US GDP, its $688 Billion would still eclipse most Third World and indeed many other “developed” countries, including Sweden. Not to many countries can match this amount, and blacks only have 13% of the US population. Many other countries make do with less GDP, and with many many more people.
Reality is the best weapon against stereotypes and misperception
in conclusion, while there are still many challenges facing the African-American community, it is very important to look past the media portrayals and stereotypes and to look at the hard numbers. Hopefully, based on these hard figures, people can get an accurate view of the true state of black America. This can only be done outside of the fear mongering, ignorance, and uninformed opinions floating both on the Internet and in the mainstream media.
