INTRODUCTION;

"This report presents a statistical analysis of data given in 3,059 reports involving observations of anomalous phenomena or objects on or near the ground resulting in physical residues generated by the observed phenomena or objects. These observations took place in 91 countries between 1490 and 2004.
The analysis permits certain regularities of these phenomena to be brought out. The data indicates there is a certain type of phenomenon which shows stable statistical properties.
This research began in 1968 and after 36 years it is yet premature to consider the nature of these phenomena on the basis of the data presented to date . The developments of methods of obtaining more reliable data and expansion of the initial information used will result in a database of the most important piece of the UFO puzzle - physical evidence.
At this point there seems to be no relation to the more popular crop circles which are much larger and complex than UFO landing sites. The current problem is the inclination on the part of investigators to identify possible landing sites as crop circles - if it’s circular, it must be a crop circle.
SUGGESTED FUTURE RESEARCH;
To obtain more definite conclusions, more reliable and detailed data must be obtained. These events must be well documented and sampled for laboratory analysis. There needs to be a central repository for landing/physical evidence events. Currently, the data is scattered among numerous investigators in many countries.
A central repository should produce interim reports to be available to the general public and serious investigators. This will produce new data and a much more complete database. The entire database should be available in some form as physical trace events will give us the most substantial evidence for - or against - the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects.

SUMMARY;
Currently UFO landing events with physical traces are occurring at a rate of 2.2 events per month. Prime time viewing for such an event would be between 8 pm and midnight with secondary peaks at 2 am and 4 am. Best location would be Missouri, Iowa or Illinois.
Objects generating traces are most often circular, metallic in color. There are three primary types of object observed.
Type 1: One to three meters in diameter, disc or spherical in shape. These objects tend not to make ground contact but hover close to the surface, leaving behind burnt or dehydrated circular effects.
Type 2: Four to seven meters in daimeter, oval or disc-shaped. Landing with imprints, either 3 or four. Sites are burnt or depressed and circular to oval in shape.
Type 3: Eight to twelve meters in diameter, disc-shaped with 3 landing legs, leaving burnt or depressed sites.
Most trace events have an observation window of 2 to 5 minutes with the object less than 20 meters away.
Eight in ten sites are circular, burnt or depressed. 91% of site diameters between 1 and 12m. 1 - 3m: 33%, 4 - 7m: 37%, only 3% 17m or greater.

The 2008 Canadian UFO Survey;
Overview;
QUOTES;
"Since 1989, Ufology Research (formerly Ufology Research of Manitoba) has been soliciting UFO case data from all known and active investigators and researchers in Canada. Our goal has been to provide data for use by researchers as they try to understand this controversial phenomenon. No comparable studies are currently produced by any other esearch group in North America. Similar programs exist in several other countries such as Sweden, where UFO report data is analysed by the Archives for UFO Research
and in Italy by Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici.
2008 marks the 20th year of collecting and analysing Canadian UFO report data. Ufology
Research has UFO data from 1989 to the present available online at:

The 2008 Canadian UFO Survey: Summary of Results
< There were 1004 UFO sightings reported in Canada in 2008, nearly three
each day. This is an all-time record high number of reports in one year.
< Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario each had provincial alltime record high numbers of UFOs reported in 2008.
< In 2008, about 10 per cent of all UFO reports were judged unexplained. This
percentage of “unknowns” falls to less than one per cent when only
higher-quality cases are considered.
< The average number of witnesses per sighting is about two.
< The typical UFO sighting lasted approximately 18 minutes in 2008.
Besides the record high number of reports in 2008, the study found that almost half
of all UFO sightings were of simple lights in the sky and, in addition to disc-shaped
objects, witnesses also reported triangles, spheres and boomerangs.
Results of this study show that many people continue to report unusual objects in
the sky, and some of these objects do not have obvious explanations. Many witnesses are
pilots, police and other individuals with reasonably good observing capabilities and good
judgement.
There is no explanation for the record high level of sightings reported in 2008. A
number of theories can be suggested: more UFOs are present and physically observable
by witnesses; more secret or classified military exercises and overflights are occurring over
populated areas; more people are unaware of the nature of conventional or natural objects
in the sky; more people are taking the time to observe their surroundings; more people are
able to report their sightings with easier access to the Internet and portable technology; or
even that the downturn in the economy is leading to an increased desire by some people
to look skyward for assistance.
Although the largest percentage of reported UFOs is simply lights in the night sky, a
significant number are objects with definite shapes observed within the witnesses’ frame of 2008 Canadian UFO Survey

reference. A dozen or so cases each year are “close encounters”—close-range encounters
with strange craft popularized in movies.
Popular opinion to the contrary, there is no incontrovertible evidence that some UFO
cases involve extraterrestrial contact. The continued reporting of UFOs by the public and
the yearly increase in numbers of UFO reports suggests a need for further examination of
the phenomenon by social, medical and/or physical scientists.

Raison D’etre etre
Why bother to collect UFO reports? In one sense, the answer may be as simple as
“because they’re there.” Polls by both professional and lay organizations have shown that
approximately ten per cent of all North Americans believe they have seen UFOs. Given the
population data available, this implies a very large number of UFO reports. If UFOs are
trivial and non-existent, as some claim, then one might ask why such a large percentage
of the population is labouring under the delusion of seeing things that are “not there.” If,
on the other hand, UFOs represent a “real” phenomenon, the data should be examined for
insight into its nature. In either situation, it can be argued that UFO reports deserve and
merit serious scientific attention.
In general, the public equates UFOs with alien visitation. However, there is no
incontrovertible proof that this is a real connection.
The UFO reports collected and analysed in this annual survey are the only data
upon which Canadian studies of UFOs can be reasonably based. As UFOs are a
worldwide phenomenon, the results of analyses of Canadian UFO reports can easily be
applied to cases in other countries. In effect, this is the empirical data for research in this
field. If one wants to know what people really are seeing in the skies, the answer lies
within these reports.
The Collection of UFO Data The Collection of UFO Data
Many individuals, associations, clubs and groups claim to investigate UFO reports. Many
solicit reports from the general public. Comparatively few actually participate in any kind of
information sharing or data gathering for scientific programs. Some are primarily interest
groups based in museums, planetariums, church basements or individuals’ homes, and do
essentially nothing with the sighting reports they receive. Some groups, such as the Mutual
UFO Network (MUFON) solicit reports and dispatch regional investigators to interview
witnesses about their experiences.
2008 Canadian UFO Survey
−8−
In recent years, websites have been developed for the public to report UFO
sightings, some claiming to be major UFO research groups but in reality do little more than
publish witnesses’ accounts without thorough investigation or even referring witnesses to
investigators or researchers in their area. While witnesses may be applauded for their
courage in giving details of their UFO sighting to a webmaster, without proper investigation
their report may be of relatively little use to serious UFO researchers.
Because there is no way to enforce standards in UFO report investigations, the
quality of case investigations varies considerably between groups and across provinces.
Quantitative studies are difficult because subjective evaluations and differences in
investigative techniques do not allow precise comparisons. UFOROM’s requests for data
from Canadian UFO researchers and investigators, and our transcribing of information from
others’ websites, unfortunately allow input of only basic information for analyses.
Most Internet postings of UFO report information are incomplete and do not show
any actual case investigation results, often forcing an evaluation of “Insufficient
Information.” Case data which can be obtained from such sites usually includes things
such as date of the sighting, the time, duration, number of witnesses and their location—
facts which are not subjective and can be used in scientific studies before interpretation.
For the purposes of this and other scientific studies of UFO data, UFO sightings
that have been made to groups, associations, organizations, websites or individuals are
considered as data in this study. This may be at odds with some definitions of the term
UFO, which is often considered a synonym for “flying saucer” or “alien spacecraft.” The
dictionary definition of UFO is simply an aerial object that is not identified by the observer.
Some scientific definitions add the additional qualifier that a UFO also is unexplained even
after rigorous investigation by trained researchers. This is not how the term is used in
common discourse, nor is it so on any website devoted to the collection of UFO reports.
Therefore, it should be stated at the outset that the analyses given here are regarding
UFO reports, not necessarily UFOs themselves.
The collection of Canadian UFO data is challenging. However, the data obtained for
analysis yields results that can be compared with other studies. This is useful in 2008 Canadian UFO Survey
−9−
understanding the nature of UFO reports not only in Canada, but can shed light on the
nature of UFO reports elsewhere in the world.

The number of UFO reports per year has varied annually, depending on a number 2008 Canadian UFO Survey

of factors. However, there has been a general trend towards an increase in yearly UFO
report numbers throughout the past 20 years, peaking in 2008. The average number of
UFO reports in Canada per year has been increasing since 1998. This clearly contradicts
comments by those who would assert that UFOs are a ‘passing fad’ or that UFO sightings
are decreasing.
UFOs and IFOs UFOs and IFOs
Studies of UFO data routinely include reports of meteors, fireballs and other conventional
objects. In many instances, observers fail to recognize stars, aircraft and bolides, and
therefore report them as UFOs. Witnesses often report watching stationary flashing lights
low on the horizon for hours and never conclude they are observing a star or planet.
Some UFO investigators spend many hours sorting IFOs from UFOs. Historically,
analyses of UFO data such as the American projects Grudge, Sign and Blue Book all
included raw UFO data which later were resolved into categories of UFOs and IFOs.
Sometimes, observed objects are quickly assigned a particular IFO explanation even
though later investigation suggests such an explanation was unwarranted. The reverse is
also true.

Method Method;
Data for each case was received by Ufology Research from participating researchers
across Canada. In addition, existing databases, web pages and other online sources of
UFO sighting information were searched for Canadian reports that occurred in 2008. The
information then was coded by members of Ufology Research and entered into a Microsoft
Excel database and statistically analysed.
An example of the coding key is as follows:

Since many UFO reports can be explained and reclassified as IFOs, this fact attests
to the reality of the objects seen. UFO reports actually reflect real events which occur.

Monthly Tr Monthly Trends in UFO Reports ends in UFO Reports ends in UFO Reports
Monthly breakdowns of reports during each year tend to show slightly different patterns..
UFO reports are generally thought to peak in summer and trough in winter, presumably
due to the more pleasant observing conditions during the summer months, when more
witnesses are outside. In Canada in 2008, the summer peak continued into the fall, but
did not begin until July.

UFO Report Types UFO Report Types ;
An analysis by report type shows a similar breakdown to that found in previous years. The
percentage of cases of a particular type remains roughly constant from year to year, with
some variations. As an example of yearly variation in UFO report data, nocturnal Lights
(NLs) comprised more than 68 per cent of all cases in 2006 but only about 44 per cent
in 2008. In 2008, there was a large increase in the number of UFO reports in which an
object was seen at night that that a shape or structure, a Nocturnal Disc (ND).
Less than two per cent of all reported UFO cases in 2008 were Close Encounters,
emphasizing the reality that very, very few UFO cases involve anything other than distant
objects seen in the sky.
This is an important statistic, because the current popular interest
in abductions and sensational UFO encounters is based not on the vast majority of UFO
cases but on the very tiny fraction of cases which fall into the category of close
encounters.
The endless speculation of what aliens may or may not be doing in our
airspace seems almost completely unconnected to what are actually being reported as UFOs;

For those unfamiliar with the classifications, a summary follows:
NL (Nocturnal Light) - light source in night sky
ND (Nocturnal Disc) - light source in night sky that appears to have a definite shape
DD (Daylight Disc) - unknown object observed during daytime hours
C1 (Close Encounter of the First Kind) - ND or DD occurring within 200 metres of a witness
C2 (Close Encounter of the Second Kind) - C1 where physical effects left or noted
C3 (Close Encounter of the Third Kind) - C1 where figures/entities are encountered
C4 (Close Encounter of the Fourth Kind) - an alleged "abduction" or "contact" experience
Note: The category of Nocturnal Disc Nocturnal Disc Nocturnal Disc was created in the 1980s by UFOROM originally for
differentiation of cases within its own report files, and has been adopted by many other
groups worldwide.
The category of PH indicates the sighting was entirely photographic, without any actual
object seen visually. Many reports listed as NL or ND or DD may also have associated
photos or video, so this should not be considered exclusive.
Hourly Distribution Hourly Distribution;
The hourly distribution of cases has usually followed a similar pattern every year, with a
peak at 2200 or 2300 hours local and a trough around 0900 hours local. Since most
UFOs are nocturnal lights, most sightings will occur during the evening hours. Since the
number of possible observers drops off sharply near midnight, we would expect the hourly
rate of UFO reports would vary with two factors: potential observers and darkness.

Duration Duration;
The category of Duration Duration Duration is interesting in that it represents the subjective length of time the
UFO experience lasted. In other words, this is the length of time the sighting lasted as 2008 Canadian UFO Survey
−21−
estimated by the witness. Naturally, these times are greatly suspect because it is kknown
that people tend to badly misjudge the flow of time. However, some people can be good at
estimating time, so this value has some importance. Although an estimate of "one hour"
may be in error by several minutes, it is unlikely that the true duration would be, for
example, one minute. Furthermore, there have been cases when a UFO was observed and
clocked very accurately, so that we can be reasonably certain that UFO events can last
considerable periods of time.
The average duration of UFO sightings in Canada in 2008 was found to be about
18 minutes. This is a significant length of time, and suggests some simple explanations.
Previous analyses have shown that long-duration sightings tend to occur in the early
morning hours, from about midnight until 6:00 a.m.
The duration of a sighting is one of the biggest clues to its explanation. Experience
in studying UFO reports has shown us that short duration events are usually fireballs or
bolides, and long duration events of an hour or more are very probably astronomical
objects moving slowly with Earth’s rotation.

UFO DISCLOSURE WORLDWIDE;
Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos; (source of all the below text).
quote;
"The relationship between society and government as far as the UFO
phenomenon is concerned is a very complex issue in many of the most
advanced countries. Defense, intelligence agencies, police forces and the
governments themselves have tackled the UFO question and the cumulative
UFO archives in a variety of manners, procedures and policies, non-uniform
and changing over the decades.
Through the attached template, the present paper introduces a concise
chronological picture of the history of release of UFO archives at a worldwide
level. In the current context, by “UFO disclosure” I mean the revelation,
declassification or release of official UFO reports from governmental files to the
news media, researchers, and UFO organizations or directly placed into the
public domain.
This relates to both classified and non-classified records, military and nonmilitary reports; in sum, officially-originated files pertaining to UFO sightings.
Every summary of reality distorts it in some way. In this case, the tabulation of
the varied and sometimes quite complicated administrative processes involved
conveys a certain distortion by necessity. In my view, the advantage of
producing this compilation outweighs the necessary abridgement of data. I have attempted to consolidate all significant or major releases over time, in some
instances selecting from a variety of actions over a span of 60 years, for the
purpose of achieving a year-to-date status review of the national formulae
followed to comply with the citizens’ aspiration to have access to governmental
records related to UFO information.
The intricacies of internal bureaucracies, the way UFO reports have been
handled by authorities, the various air forces’ relationships with the press or with
ufologists, national legislation and, above all, a general ignorance about
whether or not UFOs represent a threat to homeland security, have marked the
different historical behaviors we observe herein.
It seems evident that in most countries the release of UFO documents is linked
to lobbying by the media or UFO organizations. In other cases, it simply runs
parallel to the routine declassification of government archives.
The United States of America has the most convoluted panorama by far, mainly
because of the multiplicity of agencies implied, the immense volume of material
generated and the large number of both characters and events involved.
In the
international scene, the USA took the lead in the handling of UFO reports and,
somehow, most countries mirrored their own management of the UFO question
according to US standards, for better or for worse.
Massive amounts of documentation have been declassified and released by
both the USAF and other agencies. However, there is evidence of present withholding of supplementary information by some intelligence agencies, like
the CIA or the NSA, in addition to the United States Air Force and NORAD.
Whether documents were destroyed, lost, or simply refused for release, we do
not know. Many UFO researchers in the States suspect untruthful behavior.
Agencies contend that disclosure (i.e., revealing intelligence sources and
methods) would endanger US intelligence capabilities, as it would jeopardize
listening posts abroad, eavesdropping systems, electronic techniques, etc.
Regarding NORAD, its reticence to make public its files would avoid uncovering
the sheer amount of uncorrelated targets in the system. In any event, as far as
documents on actual UFO occurrences, it is difficult for me to think of case
information more sensational than what already exists, either declassified or in
the ufologists’ own files.
The effect of the forthcoming law on administrative
transparency by US President Barack Obama on these pending-to-declassify
records may result in a major change.
As this paper shows, a remarkable amount of UFO-related information from
official sources has been disclosed in many countries to date. But in spite of the
large wealth of UFO documentation available worldwide, there are release
processes still unfinished, and others not yet started.
The following is certain: to hide information would simply feed rumors about
conspiracies and evil practices, it is a continuing source of criticism, it
overshadows the image of any government, and it is unfair to its taxpayers.
All this can be avoided through a crystal-clear disclosure process.
The timing of public UFO disclosures is not random. There is an escalation
marked, first, by the closure of the USAF Project “Blue Book” in January 1970,
the declassification of its files later this year and their final transfer to the US
National Archives in 1976, followed by a similar move in Canada in 1980.
Meanwhile, New Zealand started placing UFO files at the National Archives.
UFO researchers succeeded in having several European governments release
or declassify their UFO records (Sweden 1983, Spain 1992).
In other countries,
the application of current legislation on public archives produced the availability
of UFO files (UK 1987). These examples encouraged UFO organizations and
researchers to achieve the opening of UFO files (Portugal 1990, Italy 1996,
Brazil 1999) and the international precedents produced “copycat” effects and
influenced other countries (Switzerland 1994, Philippines 2000, Australia 2003,
France 2007, Ireland 2007, Denmark 2009) as far as en-masse disclosure is
concerned.
In addition to the lights and shadows of the declassification in the United States,
Europe and Australasia stand out by the completeness and professionalism in
the public disclosure processes. On the contrary, Central and South American
countries have failed to advance a full-size, systematic development.
In some instances, the initial release of UFO documents to journalists created a
great deal of friction with the official sources because of serious
mismanagement of the information. It delayed by a number of years the
possibility of a full public declassification process (e.g., in Spain and Italy).
Considering the many precedents to date, this compiler’s recommendation is
that active local UFO students formally contact their air force or defense staffs to provide the following arguments:
(1) UFO phenomena represent no threat to national security; therefore it is not a not a military concern
(2) UFO investigation must be left exclusively to science, by methodology,
approach and instrumentation
(3) To withhold information is hardly compatible with a democratic policy
(4) Many countries in the world, both large and small, have already made public their UFO records
There are specialists in Europe who have instigated and monitored national
release or declassification processes, whose know-how and advice on best
practices can prove useful to governments willing to proceed in this direction.
There are several targets to accomplish with the publication of this paper.
Firstly, I would like to provide a compilation of historical data that illuminates a
generally obscure subject. Then, I hope it will generate feedback to expand this
table and improve its accuracy. Also, government officials may be inspired to
commence similar release processes in their countries.
Overall, given the geographical extent and temporal amplitude of the UFO
disclosure operations under various political scenarios, it demonstrates that
there is a case to support it as a legitimate matter for academic research
where historians, sociologists, defense or intelligence analysts, students of
government administration or bureaucracy, information science specialists like
librarians, archivists and documentalists, and other experts can develop Ph.D.
dissertations and publish papers in professional journals. It will improve the
current knowledge and will attract scholars to this field with new visions,
interpretations and insights.
Though unprecedented in its global scope, this study cannot claim to be
exhaustive; in fact, it is only an approximation in the case of some nations.
The US picture has been particularly difficult to define because of conflicting
information from multiple sources.
As a best possible summing-up of a fragmentary history pertaining to the
subject matter, in doing this research I have found out that the true story of
the interaction between DoDs & the intelligence community and UFO reporting
(data acquisition and analysis) is yet to be written.

Brief Biography (Dated: 2000)
QUOTE;
"As one of the founding members of MUFON in 1969, Walter H. Andrus, Jr. has been the International Director of the Mutual UFO Network, Inc. since 1970, succeeding Dr. Allen R. Utke. He has served on the staff of SKYLOOK and the MUFON UFO JOURNAL, starting in 1968. Walt is presently the Editor in Chief. He has been Editor or Coeditor of the annual MUFON International UFO Symposium Proceedings since 1972.
Born in Des Moines, Iowa (1920), Mr. Andrus is a graduate of Roosevelt High School (1938) and graduated from the Central Technical Institute in Kansas City, Mo. (1940). He is a graduate of the U. S. Navy Electronics Technician Program during World War II and taught in both of the above schools. Walt was formerly employed by Mid-Continent Airlines as a station manager in Quincy, Illinois. From 1949 to 1975, Mr. Andrus was employed by Motorola, Inc. in successive capacities as Assistant Plant Manager. Manager of Quality Control and Operations Manager in their Quincy, Illinois facility.
In 1975, he transferred to the Seguin, Texas plant as a Production Manager. After a tenure of nearly 34 years with Motorola, Walt retired at the end of 1982 to
devote full time to the management of the Mutual UFO Network.
The MUFON administrative offices were moved from Quincy, Illinois to Seguin, Texas in July 1975 where MUFON became a Texas nonprofit corporation and an I.R.S. tax exempt organization. Walt and Jeanne's son, Donald and daughter-in-law, Mary Lynn, now live in San Antonio, Texas. Walt and his wife are the proud grandparents of two lovely granddaughters, Chelsea Guillen and Natalie Andrus, and two great-grandsons, Derek N. and Miles H. Guillen, who live in Forest Park, Illinois.
Mr. Andrus has been interested in the UFO phenomenon since August 15, 1948, when he, his wife and son had a daylight sighting of four UFOs flying in formation over downtown Phoenix, Arizona. An amateur radio operator since 1939, Walt's present call letters are W5VRN. He obtained a private pilot's license in 1947. In addition to presenting slide-illustrated lectures in the U.S.A., Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, England, Italy and Mexico, he has appeared on national television numerous times, including Oprah Winfrey and Larry King.
Walt was a member of the Board of Directors of the joint USA-CIS Aerial Anomaly Federation. He was also on the Board of Directors for the influential UFO Research Coalition (URC), composed of Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS), Fund for UFO Research (FUFOR), and Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), organized in 1994.
Mr. Andrus retired as International Director of MUFON on July 16, 2000 after 30 years of service in this intriguing position. He was succeeded by John F. Schuessler of Littleton, Colorado".

Brief Biography
Thomas Eddie Bullard was born in North Carolina in 1949 and developed an early interest in flying saucers thanks to Friday and Saturday nights at the movies, where he saw such classics as "Earth Versus the Flying Saucers". Sputnik inspired him to begin reading the newspapers and he no sooner started than the Levelland sightings piqued his curiosity. He began to read all the UFO publications he could find--Keyhoe's books, Dick Hall's "The UFO Evidence", Fate, Ray Palmer's Flying Saucers--and he eventually joined NICAP and APRO in the 1960s.
After spending his undergraduate years at the University of North Carolina, Bullard went to graduate school in Folklore at Indiana University, and wrote his dissertation on UFOs, completing his doctoral degree in 1982.
During his research he scanned a great many newspapers for reports of the 1896-97 airship and other pre-1947 sightings. He continued this work by traveling to state archives and began issuing collections of this material as The Airship File in 1982. When the Fund for UFO Research called for someone to catalogue and carry out a comparative study of abduction reports, he took on the job and completed "UFO Abductions--The Measure of a Mystery in 1987."
The literature up to that time included some 300 reports, and comparisons demonstrated that reliable reports had many details of sequence and content in common.
Following up on this abduction research, Bullard published articles in the Journal of American Folklore, Journal of UFO Studies, IUR, the MUFON UFO Journal, and the 2000 MUFON Symposium, arguing that abduction reports maintain a surprising consistency. This sameness contrasts with folk narratives, urban legends, and products of fantasy, where narrators
readily exploit opportunities for variation in the subject material.
Bullard contributed several articles for the Abduction Study Conference held at MIT in 1992. One such article, treating a comparison of abduction investigators' findings, he later expanded into "The Sympathetic Ear", published by the Fund for UFO Research in 1995.
His ongoing interest in the historical and cultural aspects of UFOs led to an article in "UFOs and Abductions", edited by David M. Jacobs and published by the University Press of Kansas in 2000. He is currently working on a UFO book for the same press. Over the years he has served on the board of CUFOS and the advisory board of the Fund for UFO Research.

Brief Biography
Donald E. Keyhoe was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, on June 20, 1897. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in the Class of 1920, with a B.S. degree and the commission of a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. The young Lieutenant became a Naval aviator, piloting both balloons and airplanes in the period between the World Wars. After a night crash at Guam, he retired from active duty and began freelance writing. During the 1930s and early 1940s Keyhoe wrote fictional aviation adventure stories for then popular pulp magazines.
He also wrote factual articles for major newsstand magazines of the time such as Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, American, Redbook, and True. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Keyhoe personally test-flew a wide variety of aircraft and evaluated their performance and features for True Magazine. When the first "flying saucer" sightings were reported in June of 1947, Keyhoe, as an experienced aviator was skeptical. But when True asked him to investigate in 1949 and he interviewed numerous fliers as well as military officers in the Pentagon, he discovered that expert observers had seen the unexplained discs, many at close range.
His article "Flying Saucers Are Real" in the January 1950 issue of True became one of the most widely read and discussed articles in publishing history, and caused a sensation. The article was expanded into a paperback book. In January 1957 Keyhoe had become Director of the newly formed National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) in Washington, D.C., which under his leadership gave serious publicity to the UFO mystery through the 1960s and encouraged Congressional hearings.
UFO Books written by Donald Keyhoe;
"The Flying Saucers Are Real" (New York: Fawcett, 1950)
"Flying Saucers From Outer Space" (1953)
"Flying Saucer Conspiracy" (1955)
"Flying Saucers: Top Secret" (1960)
"Aliens From Space" (1973)
Donald Keyhoe spent his later retirement years at "Bluemont" in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley outside of Luray, Virginia, with his wife Helen Gardner Keyhoe, a native of Page County, Virginia.

Astronomers and police say that flare-like objects seen across a 360km-long stretch of the Top End coast were probably caused by a meteor shower, but highly-qualified UFOologists said they believed the bright lights were something more ominous. Superintendent Bruce Porter said police received many calls at about 9pm on Tuesday and feared a boat was in distress and launched a search. "We took this seriously...", they said.

2008 Mar 7 [NSW] Saucer-Shaped Meteor

Kingscliff/Murwillumbah/Byron Bay

NSW;
A Kingscliff woman was home entertaining friends about 5.30pm when she saw a bright orange object, seemingly not far from her Pacific Street home. Mrs Van Zetten said she was sitting on her back deck when she spotted the unidentified flying object that "sort of looked like an orange glow. The shape of it was like a flying saucer. ... It didn't look like a plane. It was definitely going down and then we saw black smoke so that's when we thought perhaps a plane was on fire. We don't know how big it was. We thought maybe it was about 10km (away), maybe around Cabarita. It was hard to tell."
Fearing a plane was in trouble, Mrs Van Zetten's friend, Greg Swaney, called police, who immediately began searching the area with the aid of a crew from the RACQ CareFlight helicopter. As airfields and airports in the region began accounting for their aircraft on Wednesday night, police received reports of further sightings of the orange glow. With no reports of missing aircraft, the helicopter search was called off after about half an hour. Police from Kingscliff, Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah and Byron Bay continued looking for any sign of the object before the search was called off.
Sergeant Rob Taylor of Tweed Heads police said it was likely an object had streaked across the sky on Wednesday. "There is some credibility given that a few people have reported seeing something," he said. He said police were fairly confident the object was not a plane but that it may have been a meteor. "We've got no craters or anything like that," he said. Byron Bay police conducted an early morning search of bushland near the beach yesterday morning, with no results.
Sydney Observatory astronomy educator Mel Hulbert said although there was no record of major meteor activity on Wednesday night, the light in the sky over Kingscliff was likely to have been caused by a type of meteor known as a bolide. "There are a couple of meteor showers that are running at the moment, but neither of them peaked yesterday," she said. "Probably what we've seen is a bolide. A bolide is just a larger piece of debris. Meteors are generally not that big. Most of the ones we see are about dust grain-sized. … Usually most of the meteors that we see burn up completely. Having said that, we estimate that we get a rock fall to Earth once every two hours."

For two nights in a row residents in western Victoria have reported seeing a bright light in the sky. On the first night, residents at Ballarat, west of Melbourne, said they saw something that looked like a UFO after spotting an orange-coloured light in the sky at about 10pm. The object hovered for more than one minute. But one resident said it could have been a model helicopter.
"A lot of guys fly night choppers here and they have the LCD lights around the blades and they have lights all down the boom and tail rotor," the man, identified only as Ian, told Southern Cross Broadcasting. "These models can hover and they can go from zero to about 100 km/h in a few seconds."
On Monday night, people in South Australia and western Victoria deluged police and media with reports of a spectacular meteor sighting. Police in SA said they took calls from just after 8pm (CST) on Monday from Renmark and Loxton in the Riverland, most Adelaide suburbs and then from people living south of the city, with reports of something looking like a fireball in the sky.
In Victoria, callers to ABC Radio from Bendigo to Horsham in the state's north-west down to Colac in the south-west, reported seeing a bright green coloured object shooting westward in the sky. A South Australia Police spokesman said later that the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed the object seen on Monday night was a meteor.

The Perth Observatory attempted to figure out if an unidentified object, seen in the skies of Western Australian and the Northern Territory, was space junk or a large meteorite, on Apr 2 2005. Astronomer Peter Birch reported that the unidentified object was tracked from the south coast of Western Australia, to north of Alice Springs. He says from the reports he has received it was most likely a satellite re-entering the atmosphere. He described the object to be like "That of a large burning object in the sky, flaring getting bright, then getting dim, then getting bright again, with a tail out behind it, which is a fairly common meteor type description, but the thing that is a bit different from a meteor description is that it's been seen over such a large area and for such a long time."
Alice Springs police say they received more than 20 reports of the unidentified object tracking across central Australian skies. Police say most of the calls came from Alice Springs, but some extended 320 kilometres to the south-west at Yulara and 170 kilometres north at Ti Tree. Alice Springs resident Fiona Higgins said, "I saw what I thought was fireworks and I thought, that's strange because I didn't hear any bang like you would with fireworks and it was going horizontal not vertical and it was the most phenomenal thing with all the pretty colours," she said.

NT
"A black triangular object that made a number of movements and then speared off out of sight behind the trees," police described footage shot on video camera of a UFO that was reported to them by a Dubbo family on Sunday night, 10 March, 2005. It was apparently about 50 miles away in sky's south-east. "I've never seen anything like it," Mrs Fuller said. "It was hovering there for five hours, and it was completely silent. It looked like a bird, but much larger, the size of a car, with a flat top and a deeper shape at the bottom." The police arrived to the scene at 8pm, viewed the videotape, and filed an official report to Air Services Australia (ASA). Mrs Fuller also put a call into INUFOR and described what they had seen to Moira McGhee. "They said it looked about 40 to 50 miles away to the south-east," she said. She said the family saw something between 7pm and 8.15pm.
At first a male family member saw what he described to Ms McGhee as something "that looked like a stationary chopper". "Now remember, it was still daylight at 7pm," she said. Mrs. Fuller said that together with her husband, and three daughters, they continued watching until after 11pm. "Once the sun set, there was a light like from a lighthouse flashing on and off, every couple of seconds," she said. "The police were here, and they said they had never seen anything like it before. Every now and then, it would move to the left again, and then back to the same spot again."
Duty Officer Inspector Alan Cusack commended the family for reporting the incident. "We take these calls on their merit," he said. "The family were genuine in their concern, they called the police and they did the right thing. We have proceeded in investigating the matter by referring the incident to the ASA and sending them the videotape for inspection." Inspector Cusack said the ASA told police that there were "numerous reports of objects flying in the southern regions of Australia".
Paul Cremin didn't even know and it wasn't until his friends showed him the photograph in the previous day’s Daily Liberal of an unidentified flying object that he realised he had spooked all of the city. Mr Cremin and his 13-year-old son Aidan fly kites, one matching an almost exact description of the UFO, and model aeroplanes as a hobby. Last Sunday night, for five hours, he was flying a 'delta cone' kite 140 metres in the air - directly in the part of the sky that Suzanne Fuller and her family reported seeing a UFO. "I called the police because I didn't want anyone to worry, and the policewoman couldn't stop laughing either."
Mrs Fuller also said that she had seen a light from the object flashing on and off, once the sun set, which is now accounted for. "We use a torch to try and spot the kite in the sky once it gets dark," Mr Cremin said. "Reading that they saw it move a bit to the left, and then back again, I knew it was the kite. It does exactly that," he said, shaking his head.
Mr Cremin called the Police and a member of the local area command called Suzanne Fuller to tell her that the object had been found.

Residents in the Brisbane suburbs of Redcliffe and Caboolture have reported four UFO sightings, police said. A police spokesman said that two bright discs were seen hovering over Clontarf and later moved on to Beachmere. "We received the first call at about dusk, with the next about 15 minutes later," the spokesman said. He said Caboolture police had called at about 8pm, also receiving sighting reports. "People are seeing something, but I'm sure there is a more logical explanation for it," the spokesman said.

2001 Oct 4-5 [QLD] Gundiah-Tiaro Abduction Hoax
I33.
Gundiah property near Tiaro (S QLD) – Mackay (N QLD)
QLD
http://policeufo.com/Icons/QLDEmblem.gif
Keith Rylance, 39, his wife Amy, 22, and their business partner, Petra Heller, 35, were at their Gundiah property developing the Whispering Winds winery, amongst other things, when on the evening of Thursday October the 4th 2001, an alarmed Keith Rylance called the nearby Tiaro police reporting that his wife had been abducted. About an hour and a half after the initial call for Senior Constable Robert Maragna from Tiaro and an officer from Maryborough arrived on the scene. Keith Rylance reported to the officers that he went to sleep in the bed-room of his mobile home at about 9:30pm, with Petra retired in her bedroom in the annex of the mobile home. Amy stayed on a couch watching TV in the annex room lounge. Amy had apparently fallen asleep on the couch.
On this stormy night, at around 11:15pm, Petra was reportedly woken up. When she entered the adjacent lounge, she was confronted by an extraordinary sight, which, allegedly, quickly overwhelmed her. A bizarre rectangular beam of light was being projected through the open window of the lounge. The light beam appeared to be truncated at the end. Inside the beam, Petra claims to have seen Amy in a prone position, being carried out headfirst through the window. Underneath her, but sill within the beam, were items that had been on the coffee table adjacent to the couch where Amy had been sleeping.
Before fainting in shock, Petra noticed that the beam was coming from a disc-shaped UFO hovering just above the ground a short distance away, near a tree at the rear of a clear section of the property, immediately behind the mobile home annex. A short while later Petra regained consciousness and began screaming. The commotion woke Keith, who stepped into the lounge and was confronted by a slightly agitated Petra.
The items that were originally on the coffee table were now on the floor in front of the window. Keith said that he then found that the window screen was torn both vertically and along the bottom of the window frame. Unable to get and sense out of Petra, Keith rushed outside, trying to locate Amy. She was nowhere to be found. Keith then managed to get Petra to tell him what had happened. He initially didn’t believe her. After a second search for his wife, Keith decided to call the police.
Two officers attended and were soon joined by the officer in charge of the Tiaro police, Sergeant John Bosnjak, who then investigated the site. They found Keith Rylance and Petra Heller in an agitated state with no sign of Amy Rylance. They examined the torn screen, and the right side of a flowering bush to the left side of the window, which looked as if it had been affected by heat. The police took samples.
At the property on Friday the officers were entertaining foul play and murder when the phone rang and was picked up by Keith. A woman called to say the she had taken a somewhat distressed young woman from a BP gas station on the northern outskirts of the central Queensland City of Mackay, some 790 kilometres to the north. The young woman was Amy Rylance, and the woman explained that Amy was all right, and was at the Mackay hospital, where a doctor had examined her.
Keith handed the phone to the Senior Constable Maragna. Mackay police were called in, for total of three police stations involved in the investigation. Keith Rylance gave the police the keys to the property, packed up an amount of the business and personal gear into a van, and left for Mackay with Petra. Meanwhile, at Mackay, Constable J. A. Hansen, of the Mackay police, interviewed Amy Rylance at around 2:30am Friday. Amy completed a written statement, notarized with a Justice Act. Her last recollection at the property was of lying on the couch.
Then woke up lying on a bench alone in a strange rectangular room illuminated from the walls and the ceiling. She called out and heard a male voice, asking her to be calm and that everything would be all right and that she would not be harmed. Soon an opening appeared win the wall and a slender ‘guy’ about six feet tall and covered in a full body suit walked into the room He appeared to have a black mask on his face, with a hole for his eyes, nose and mouth. He repeated his calming assurances.
Amy felt she had been there awhile. The ‘guy’ told her they were returning her to a place not far from where they took her, because they lights were wrong at the property and it wasn’t safe. Next she woke up on the ground surrounded by trees, feeling disoriented and smelling the ocean. She stumbled through the forest for what seemed like a long time without progress, before coming out onto a road that looked like a highway where she saw the light from a gas station.
She walked into the station where the staff offered assistance. Amy indicated she felt tired, sore, drained, and lethargic. She asked a woman at the service station to take her to the hospital, and the woman and her friend took Amy to the hospital.
From the hospital Amy spoke with two police officers and her husband Keith, then went to Mackay police station to give her statement. The police arranged to put Amy in a motel pending the arrival of her husband. He and Petra arrived during the day and spent time discussing what had happened, taking notes, and photographs of a triangular arrangement of marks on her inner right thigh, marks on each heel, and the growing out of her hair, which she had dyed earlier in the week.
Her hair had started to show its former colour, and her body hair more pronounced, suggesting that considerable time had passed. Keith Rylance contacted the Australian UFO Research Network number mentioned in a magazine. On Tuesday at 10pm civilian investigators arrived at the property just after where they stayed overnight. The following day when the dog was let off, it jumped up on the window with the damaged screen, suggesting that some of the damage from the dog.
They also inspected the damaged plant and found a possible cause for it as simple heat stress from hot sunlight, and spoke to the police. By Wednesday in Mackay, investigators were focusing on the area where Amy Rylance returned, speaking with the BP gas service station staff who turned over surveillance videotape. Keith Rylance evaded investigators and had checked out from his motel.
On Thursday Keith contacted investigators in the afternoon indicating they had relocated to an unspecified location, having fled the area, having reportedly being pursued by a high-powered dark-brown four-wheel truck in a "Men in Black" scenario. On Monday investigators heard from Keith again but he was evasive.
On Thursday civilian investigators spoke with Keith again who said he had spoken with the Maryborough police, but Chalker responded that all investigation had been handed back to Tiaro Police. On Friday Keith spoke to Chalker, but Keith was difficult and evasive about privately inverviewing Amy and Petra. By November 2001, New Idea had come out with a four page story, with the article reading, “Amy, Keith and Petra then fled Gundiah, and the UFO investigators haven’t been able to complete their research.” By December, Keith Rylance’s contact details, mobile phone and e-mail were no longer functional.
On October 4-5, 2002, the Fraser Coast Chronicle newspaper published an article asking, “Why did they do it?”, arguing that the affair had been a hoax and highlighted forensic issues that the police had found back in October 2001. The Tiaro police had a clear message: “The police file remains open and Sergeant Robert Maragna would love to talk to Amy, Keith and Petra and give them the bill for the hours of police time that went into investigating the alien abduction.” “There were too many inconsistencies in the story for it to be true,” said Sergeant Maragna.
During a search of the property police had found black hair dye, paper towels and the burnt remains of two flood lights and electrical wiring in an incinerator about 20 meters from the annex. “The most damning evidence are the phone records,” said Sergeant Maragna. Calls came from a motel in Rockhampton, which is between Gundiah and Mackay, to the Gundiah home the day before. The police scenario had Amy already on her way to Mackay via the Rockhampton motel, with the black hair dye being used by Petra later to play the blond Amy.
The newspaper also quoted the Tiaro mayor John Horrex, however, who still believed the alien story. In March 2003, civilian investigators were contacted by an overseas source who suggested events had to do with a Scientology mission to find a buried spaceship as described in “Mission Earth”, by Scientology’s founder L. Ron Hubbard. When investigators visited Tiaro police station back in October 2001, they were shown a notebook apparently owned by Petra which the police had removed from the Gundia property. The police were suspicious of some strange content they thought might be connected to the case.
Chalker recognized some of its content as being related to Scientology, such the words ‘thetan’ and ‘clearing’. Recall that the Gundia property was called “Whispering Winds” - Hubbard lived out his last years on a remote property in the United States called “Whispering Winds”.

1999 Dec 8 [VIC] Dam Divers Declare Meteor
I32.
Guyra
http://policeufo.com/Icons/VICEmblem.gif
VIC
On Wednesday 8 December, 1999, Guyra Shire Council's water supply operator Mr. Peter Stan observed an unusual pattern of flattened reeds of approximately 15 metres long by six metres wide caused by an object apparently plunging into the Guyra Water Supply Dam sometime between Monday 6 December and midday, on the edge of Guyra No.1 Dam. At approximately 2.10pm on the same day, the site was inspected by members of Council's Engineering Staff and Guyra Police. It was determined that an unknown object had fallen into the water supply with the possibility of contaminating the town's water supply.
A decision was made to turn off the water supply pumps so as to avoid the possibility of pumping contaminated water into the concrete storage reservoirs on Prisk Hill. The NSW Environment Protection Authority attended the impact scene along with the NSW Fire Brigade. Radiation levels were measured and water samples were taken for analysis. To conserve the stored water in the concrete storage reservoirs on Prisk Hill, on Wednesday evening the Council decided to impose water restrictions. To communicate the message to the community an announcement was made at the Guyra Central School end of year function on Wednesday evening and arrangements were made for emergency service personnel to hand deliver water restriction notices to every water user in town.
This was undertaken by the Guyra SES and Guyra VRA early Thursday morning. Apparently the daily water consumption had successfully been reduced to 50% of normal usage.
By Thursday afternoon Police divers had arrived to investigate the site. Some volunteer geologists also assisted to make assessments. At 4.00pm it was made official that the water source was not contaminated. Water restrictions were maintained until 6.00pm Friday to allow water reserves on Prisk Hill to recover. The reeds made it difficult for the divers to work and on Friday 10 December 1999 Guyra Council's excavator was brought to the site to clear the way.
All Thursday and Friday, Guyra featured in all the major National Newspaper, Television and Radio headlines locally and even on the BBC in London, as people waited for news. Based upon evidence at the site and from reports of witnesses, it is most likely that the disturbance was caused by a meteorite about the size of a cricket ball falling from the sky. At 12.30pm, the NSW Police Service issued a public statement:
Police divers have finished their work in Guyra Dam. The divers recovered sediment and fragments believed to be from the object. Those sediments have been tested by geologists on-site and the geologists have advised police they believe the sediment is from a small meteorite the size of a golf ball. The meteorite has penetrated the mud at the bottom of the dam and is now embedded about four metres into soft granite and unable to be moved. The site is now reopened and all emergency services have left the area.
At a Guyra Council meeting, held on Monday 20 December, councillors considered how recovery of the meteorite might be arranged and in particular looked at the possibility of calling for expressions of interest. Guyra Council was notably appreciative of all the emergency service organisations, and particular mention was made of the work carried out by Guyra LEOCON Sgt Larry Hoffman, Police Local Area Command Duty Officer Stuart Bartholomew, Dennis Saunders Local Controller of the Guyra SES and Geoff Thrift Captain of the Guyra VRA.

There were several reports of sightings of objects in the sky across Queensland on the night of June 6 1999, including a truck driver who says he saw a flaming object move across the sky near Gin Gin, west of Bundaberg. One of the sightings was made by a Burnett resident Margaret Sheppard. “It was just this brilliant green object that lit up the sky and came from the north and landed in the area west of Kingaroy,” she said. When it was gone, poof, dark– the lights went out again.”
In Gladstone people reported seeing an object falling from the sky. The Gladstone police force searched but failed to find any trace. An investigation by Richard Maybury of AUFRON with Air Traffic Control only revealed that the object was not tracked by radar, possibly due to the distance limitations of radar sites and that it could have been a meteor.

Narre Warren Wits:Many
VIC
On night of Monday May 26, a brightly-glowing saucer, red in colour, appeared over Packenham. The police in nearby Narre Warren sent a cruiser to investigate. The following night, Tuesday, May 27, the UFO visited Narre Warren, prompting a flurry of phone calls to police headquarters. Eleven people on Lantana Drive watched the UFO fly south from the Dandenong range, east of Melbourne. One resident, Dianne Walkerton, brought out her camcorder and shot nine minutes of video footage, showing the glowing, yellowish-orange saucer flying east.
As the UFO passed over nearby Packenham, it was seen by eight people in a milk bar. According to the Examiner, "All were adamant that it was not a helicopter. Rough estimates were that the object was 300 feet above ground. It made no sound but was generally described as disc-shaped with three bright yellow-orange lights in triangular formation, flying below the low cloud."
At 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, Ms. Walkerton and her neighbours again saw the saucer. According to Barbara Schyler of the UFO Encounter and Support Line, the residents watched the object for 10 or 15 minutes before it vanished over the eastern horizon.
On Thursday night, May 30, police received six calls from the Warren Wood housing development estate in Narre Warren. Residents claimed to have seen "a brightly-lit large object flying low and fast in the direction (east) of Packenham at around 7:30 p.m." At 1:10 a.m. on Friday, May 31, a saucer was reported hovering over Cranbourne Road near Narre Warren.

"This story concerns a series of incidents that occurred in 1970 and 1971 in and around the Lincolnshire area. One such incident led to the crash of a lightning jet fighter aircraft, call sign Foxtrot 94, from RAF Binbrook and the mysterious disappearance of it's pilot. It appears that at least two other aircraft were lost in other incidents.
It involved the alleged setting up of secret observation posts around Britain, including at least four in Lincolnshire which were manned throughout the Autumn, Winter and Spring of 1970 and 1971. This culminated in a number of sightings of Unidentified Flying objects, including one in broad daylight on the Lincolnshire coast, a few miles from Cleeththorpes.
The incident involved the appearance of a huge UFO, claimed to be up to 180 feet long, accompanied by numerous glass ball type objects that spent several hours hovering over the RAF bombing range at Donna Nook in full view of several airmen, before vanishing over the North Sea.
Reports of what were seen in the incident correspond closely with information from other sightings and from a controversial transcript between the pilot of the doomed lightning, Foxtrot 94 and his ground controllers.
The source of the information requested that his identity be kept secret and those of his sources. He maintains that some authorities have been prepared to go to great lengths to keep quiet the official reports on the incidents he has disclosed.
Information was passed to him at a number of pre-arranged locations, including a wind swept platform at York railway station and a lay-by on the A1.
He claims that one contact who knew the full story about Foxtrot 94 was killed in a car accident in Germany. The German Police maintained he had been drinking, but our information was that the man was a total abstainer.
The source claims that in 1970-1971 a major operation was undertaken to get to the bottom of the UFO mystery once and for all. It involved largely British and American forces and much of it's activity was centred on the United Kingdom and the North Atlantic area. The operation was code named 'Arneid'.
The informant claims that fresh information has emerged of a year long operation by the British Air forces to finally solve the riddle of the UFOs pilots claim to have seen since the end of World War two.
The informant also stated that he was one of the aircraft accident investigators who were sent to RAF Binbrook to inspect the wreckage of the intact Lightning, Foxtrot 94, which had been ditched in the sea after a close encounter with a UFO. He also stated that the recovered aircraft had been taken to Binbrook where it was kept under shrouds and armed guards mounted around it.
The investigators who were from farnborough were only allowed a brief look at the aircraft before being ordered off the base. The investigators were puzzled when they inspected the aircraft because they saw that all the instruments had been removed and a different ejector seat fitted.
Now the source of the information has provided a lot more information about what he claimed was going on over the North Sea in the early 1970s. Attempts have been made to verify this information but this has not been possible.
the fatal flight of foxtrot 94
Saxa Vord was one of a chain of British Radar stations who's task was to scan the skies and guard against intrusion from unidentified aircraft approaching over the North sea or the sensitive 'Iceland Gap'. The year was 1970 when the cold war was at it's height with Russian aircraft making regular flights into the North Atlantic to test the reaction from Nato fighters.
At 8.17pm. on the night of September, 8th. 1970, a radar operator at Saxa Vord picked up a contact of an unidentified aircraft over the North Sea between the Shetlands and Norway. The contact was monitored for several minutes at a steady speed of 630 mph. At 37,000 feet altitude on a South Westerly heading. The contact was then seen to turn 30 degrees to head due South with it's speed increasing to 900mph. And it's altitude lifting to 44, 000 feet.
In accordance with normal procedure Saxa Vord flashed a message to the quick reaction flight at RAF Leuchers on the East coast of Scotland. Two Lightning interceptors were scrambled within minutes and headed out across the north sea. So far it had been a routine scramble, but it was then that the Radar plotters on the Shetland Isles saw something on their screens that left them amazed.
The contact which had been traveling at a speed consistent with Russian warplanes had turned through 180 degrees and within seconds had disappeared from their screens. Later they calculated the speed of the object at 17, 400mph.
During the next hour the mystery contact reappeared several times and each time the lightnings were sent to investigate, but each time the object turned and disappeared again.
By this time two F4 Phantoms of the US Air Force had scrambled from Keflavik in Iceland and with their sophisticated Radar were able to track the intruder themselves. As they attempted to close on the object they found that they had no more success than the Lightnings.
The cat and mouse games were now causing alarm to NATO commanders. The alert had reached such a level that the contact was being monitored by the Ballistic Missile Early Warning Station at Fylingdales, also with a second BMEWS in Greenland. The North American Air Defence Network at Cheyenne Mountain and the US Detection and tracking center at Colorado Springs also became involved.
During this time the Lightnings and the Phantoms made repeated attempts to get close to the object, but as they approached it disappeared off the Radar screens. Eventually the Lightnings were ordered back to base whilst the Phantoms continued to patrol.
At 9.30pm. the radar controllers picked up the object again. This time it's speed was decelerating to 1, 300mph. Which was almost at the limit of the Lightnings and Phantoms. It was holding an altitude of 18,000 feet and heading Southwest, off the Northern tip of Denmark.
Two more Lightnings were scrambled from RAF Leuchars to patrol northeast of Aberdeen and a further two from RAF Coltishall in Norfolk. The contact was now within these two lines of fighters. While this was taking place the RAF were informed that the Strategic Air command HQ at Omaha, Nebraska, was ordering it's B52 bombers into the air.
This order can only have come from the highest level. What had started as a routine sighting of a Russian aircraft had now reached the White house and presumably President Richard Nixon.
At this time NORAD was informed that a US pilot of great experience was presently on an exchange visit with the RAF at Binbrook, the North Lincolnshire fighter base near Grimsby. Enquiries were made and it was discovered that the pilot was on station and by coincidence 'Flight available'. At 9.45pm. a request was made from the highest level within NORAD through strike command's UK Headquarters at high Wycombe for RAF Binbrook to send Captain William Schaffner to join the Lightnings search for the mystery object.
By this time four Lightnings, two Phantoms and three tankers were already airborne and were joined by a Shackleton from Kinloss which was ordered to patrol on a North South heading at 3000 feet, 10 miles from the East Coast.
Binbrook's QRA Lightnings were being held in reserve but it was decided to send out one more aircraft flown by Captain Schaffner. The Americans wanted one of their own men present when the object was eventually cornered.
Captain was sitting in the crew room of 5 squadron when the call came from High Wycombe. Schaffner was still in his flying suit, after returning earlier that evening from a training sortie in one of the squadron's aircraft. When the call came Schaffner ran out of the building across the runway towards two Lightnings which were standing virtually ready for flight. One XS894 was in the process of having it's fuel tanks topped up.
Schaffner climbed the ladder into the aircraft and hauled himself into the cockpit. He waved aside the ground crews who were expecting to carry out pre-flight checks, ordered the refueling to stop and failed to sign the regulation form stating that he was happy with the aircraft.
The aircraft was armed with two Red Top air -to- air missiles, one was armed, the other a dummy. The aircraft's guns had enough 30mm. cannon shells for a six-second burst. One of the men on the ground crew at the time was Brian Mann of Grimsby, who was driving one of the fuel bowsers. He remembers XS894 being refueled at a rate of 150 gallons per minute. When suddenly the aircraft started. He said, "
The windows of the tanker almost went in. I took off the hoses and got out of the way". Mr. Mann remembered Captain Schaffner disregarding the ground marshal, who was the eyes and ears of the pilot on the ground, as he swung the Lightning round.
At 10.06pm. the aircraft blasted off Binbrook's runway into the night sky. Those on the ground saw it disappear with a sheet of flame from it's twin tail pipes as it headed out over the North Sea.
By now the mystery contact had lead to five Lightnings, two Phantoms, three tankers and a Shackleton being scrambled and was being tracked by by radar controllers at Staxton Wold, which stands on high ground overlooking Scarborough. The contact was flying parallel to the east coast 90 miles east of Whitby, at a speed of 530 mph. And at an altitude of 6,100feet.
What follows is drawn from information given to the Grimsby Evening Telegraph newspaper who broke the story and was reported as being an official transcript of the conversation between Captain Schaffner and the radar station at Staxton Wold.
SCHAFFNER: I have visual contact, repeat visual contact. Over.
STAXTON; Can you identify aircraft type.
SCHAFFNER: Negative, nothing recognizable, no clear outlines. There is bluish light. Hell that's bright….very bright.
STAXTON: Are your instruments functioning 94. Check compass. Over.
SCHAFFNER: Affirmative, GCI I'm along side of it now, maybe 600 feet off my…It's Conical shape, jeeze that's bright, it hurts my eyes to look at it for more Than a few seconds.
STAXTON: How close are you now?.
SCHAFFNER: About 400 feet he's still in my three o'clock. Hey wait…there's something Else. It's like a large soccer ball…it's like made of glass.
STAXTON: Is it part of the object or independent over.
SCHAFFNER: Negative, nothing.
STAXTON: Can you asses the rate…..?.
SCHAFFNER: Contact in descent, gentle. Am going with it…50 no about 70…it's Levelled out again.
STAXTON: Is the ball object still with it. Over.
SCHAFFNER: Affirmative it's not actually connected…maybe magnetic attraction to The conical shape. There's a haze of light ye'ow …it's within that haze. Wait a second it's turning…coming straight for me…shit I'm taking
Evasive action…a few…I can hardly…
STAXTON: Come in 94 are you receiving over, come in.
As the controller lost contact with Captain Schaffner, a radar operator who had been tracking the Lightning and the mystery object watched in amazement. The two blips on the screen representing the aircraft and it's quarry, slowly merged into one. Decellerating rapidly from 500mph. Until they became stationary 6000 feet above the North Sea.
Two and a half minutes after the blip came to a halt it started accelerating rapidly to 600mph. And climbed to 9000 feet, heading South towards Staxton.
Shortly afterwards, the single blip separated into two. One maintaining it's southerly heading, somewhat erratically, at about 600mph. And descending slowly, the other turning 180 degrees to head North Westerly and vanishing at a speed calculated to be around 20,400mph.

"At this time a Shackleton which had been on patrol off the Firth of Forth was ordered to hold station around Flamborough Head. Then Staxton Wold re-established contact with Captain Schaffner".
SCHAFFNER: GCI…are you receiving over.
STAXTON: Affirmative 94, loud and clear. What's your condition.
SCHAFFNER: Not too good. I can't think what has happened…I feel kind of dizzy…
I can see shooting stars.
STAXTON: Can you see your instruments, over.
SCHAFFNER: Affirmative, but er…the compass is u/s…
STAXTON: Foxtrot 94, turn 043 degrees, over.
SCHAFFNER: Er…all directional instruments are out, Repeat u/s over
STAXTON: Roger 94, execute right turn, estimate quarter turn, over.
SCHAFFNER: Turning now.
STAXTON: Come further 94. That's good, is your altimeter functioning ,over.
SCHAFFNER: Affirmative GCI.
STAXTON: Descend to 3,500 feet, over.
SHHAFFNER: Roger GCI.
STAXTON: What's your fuel state 94, over.
SCHAFFNER: About 30 per cent GCI.
STAXTON: That's what we calculated. Can you tell us what happened 94.
SCHAFFNER: I don't know, it came in close…I shut my eyes… I figure I must
Have blacked out for a few seconds.
STAXTON: OK 94 standby.
At this time the Shackleton arrived over Flamborough and began circling before XS894 Was vectored into the area by Staxton controllers.
SCHAFFNER: Can you bring me in GCI.
STAXTON: Er hold station 94, over…Foxtrot 94 can you ditch the aircraft, over.
SCHAFFNER: She's handling fine. I can bring her in over.
STAXTON: Negative 94. I repeat can you ditch the aircraft, over.
SCHAFFNER: Yeah…I guess.
SAXTON: Standby 94, over. Oscar 77, over.
SHACKLETON: 77 receiving, over.
STAXTON: 94 is ditching. Can you maintain a wide circle, over.
SHACKELTON: Affirmative GCI, over.
STAXTON: Thanks 77. Standby, 94 execute ditching procedure at your discretion - Over.
SCHAFFNER: Descending now GCI, over.
A period of six to seven minutes elapsed without contact, then suddenly.
SHACKELTON: He's down GCI. Hell of a splash. He's down in one piece though, over.
STAXTON: Can you see the pilot yet, over.
SHACKELTON: Negative, were going round again, pulling a tight one, over.
Two minutes elapsed.
SHACKELTON: The canopy's up…she's floating ok…can't see the pilot, we need a Chopper out here GCI. No sign of the pilot, where the hell is he.
STAXTON: You sure he's not in the water, check your SABRE receptions, over.
(Note Sabre was the search and rescue beacon carried by all aircrew).
SHACKELTON: No SABRE yet, no flares either. Hang on were going round again.
A further two minutes elapsed.
SHACKELTON: GCI over.
STAXTON: Receiving you 77 over.
SHACKELTON: This is odd GCI…She's sinking fast but the canopy has closed again.
STAXTON: Can you confirm that the pilot is clear of the aircraft, over.
SHACKELTON: He's not in it, we can confirm that. He must be in the water
Somewhere, over.
STAXTON: Any distress signals or flares, over.
SHACKELTON: Negative GCI, were going round again, over.
A short time later the shackelton was in touch with Saxton Wold.
SHACKELYON: She's sunk GCI, there's a slight wake where she was, still no sign of The pilot. I say again GCI we need a chopper fast, over.
STAXTON: A whirlwind is on it's way from Leconfield, are you sure there's no sign of The pilot, over.
SHACKELTON: Nothing GCI. The first pass we assumed he was un -strapping. He Must have got out as we went round for the second pass, over.
STAXTON: That's what we were thinking. Maintain patrol 77 he must be out there Somewhere.
SHACKELTON: Roger GCI.
A short time later the search and rescue helicopter arrived and a systematic search of the Area began. Lifeboats from Bridlington and Flamborough arrived and joined the search as the weather began to deteriorate. The search continued overnight and into the next day, without success and without receiving any transmissions from the beacons carried by the pilot and no distress flares were seen at any time.
The following day the Evening Telegraph reported that flares had been seen about 10 miles off shore and the Grimsby trawler Ross Kestrel which had been in the area had gone to investigate, but found nothing.
The missing pilot was not found and at that time no wreckage from the aircraft had been located. Three weeks later the Evening Telegraph reported that the fuselage of the aircraft had been located on the sea-bed and quoted that the ejector seat was still in the aircraft giving rise to the belief that the body of the pilot was still in the aircraft.
On October 7th. divers from HMS Kiddlestone inspected the wreckage and said that Captain Schaffner's body was still in the cockpit, but that was the start of the biggest mystery of all. When the aircraft was brought to the surface and returned to Binbrook, there was no trace of Captain Schaffner. The cockpit was empty.
The wreckage was eventually lifted from the sea some five miles from Flamborough Head and transported in some secrecy to RAF Binbrook.
Air crashes in the North Sea in those were fairly common and much of the wreckage found it's way into Grimsby where the Evening Telegraph reporters were on hand to record the event, but not with XS894.
It was also common practice for crashed aircraft to be taken to the M0D Crash Investigation Branch at Farnborough where detailed examination took place in an attempt to determin the cause of the accidents, but this did not happen with XS894. Instead the remains of the aircraft which were in good condition, were taken straight to Binbrook where it was placed behind shutters in a hanger at the far corner of the base.
The Accident Investigation team from Farnborough arrived at Binbrook in the belief that they were about to start a detailed investigation, one which would leave to a report being submitted to the Ministry Of Defence, to assist with the eventual board of enquiry. But they were in for a surprise.
They were amazed to find many of the cockpit instruments were missing. These included the E2B compass, voltmeter, standby direction indicator, standby inverter indicator and the complete auxiliary warning panel from the starboard side of the cockpit. This was a serious breach of regulations and although the investigation team were told the instruments would be returned shortly, they never were.
The investigators found that there was a revolting smell in the cockpit while the whole aircraft still had a slimy feel to it following it's months immersion in the North Sea.
The ejector seat also seemed to be wrong, and there was a suspicion that it was not the original one fitted to the aircraft when it had taken off on it's last flight from Binbrook. They were given assurances by the officer commanding 5 squadron that the seat had not been tampered with, but some of the investigators were not convinced.
Brian McConnel a former Sergeant who was serving at Binbrook at the time of the incident, said that the cartridge on the seat had failed because of faulty installation, but this contradicted the story of the Shackelton crew who said that they had seen the canopy open. Had any attempt been made to fire the ejector seat, the cockpit canopy would have blown off. It also comes into conflick with the order Captain Schaffner received instructing him to ditch his aircraft. Even though he stated that the Lightening was still handling fine with plenty of fuel left.

2When the accident investigators were eventually allowed to examine the aircraft, they were constantly supervised by five civilians, two of whom were Americans. After a few hours, the investigators were told that as nothing useful had been found there job was over.
The following day they were summoned to the main office at Farnborough and told in no uncertain terms that they were not to discus any aspect of the ditching of XS894, even with their own families. The reason given was National Security.
No further information has been forthcoming and the investigation file is still classified. When I contacted the Ministry Of Defence I was told that the incident had been an unfortunate accident and that there was nothing related to UFOs. Involved.
Further enquiries revealed that the aircraft had eventually been taken to Kirkland Air Force Base in America. When questioned about this the MOD spokesman said that this was quite possible and not unusual because the pilot of the aircraft was American. This was in no way inferred that the MOD were admitting that the aircraft had been sent to America.
Pat Otter the press investigator in the case said, " I first came across this story a few years ago when an outline of the story was related to me by an aviation enthusiast and author who lived at market Rasen, who was researching for a book on aviation mysteries at the time.
He suggested I dig out the cuttings on the crash and look further into it. There was more to the story of XS894 than met the eye, he told me.
I had anticipated difficulties in investigating a 16 year-old ditching incident in the North Sea, but not on the scale I was to encounter over the next few weeks.
Normally, helpful press contacts in the MOD responded initially by promising to help, but then became very reticent.
Similar enquiries to the Untied States Embassy and the US Air Force at Alconbury proved to be dead ends. Calls were not returned and contacts unavailable.
At this time I enlisted the aid of and Aviation correspondent for certain newspapers. He had close links with the RAF and USAF. He spent weeks checking out the story and he found it to be more intriguing by the hour. He paid numerous visits to the MOD and spent hours on the telephone to contacts in the United States.. But everywhere he heard the ominous sound of doors being slammed. He finally admitted defeat, but he was absolutely certain that there was an official blanket of secrecy surrounding the crash of that Lightning over the North Sea.
A man who came forward to the Evening Telegraph told us he had been a member of the crash investigation team who had gone to Binbrook to inspect the recovered aircraft. Because of the strange way he and his team of investigators had been treated on arrival at Binbrook, he decided to start an investigation on his own.
Now several years later he believes he has peeled back a bit more of the mystery surrounding XS894. We were given a copy of his account of what he believes really happened that night. Some has come from his dogged investigations, some from official documents he has obtained, and some most tellingly from what he maintains is the final transcript of the conversation between Captain Schaffner and the radar controller at Staxton Wold.
Around the time of the incident involving XS894 many reports of UFOs. Were being received by the Police and Coast guards in the Bridlington area. There were also many reports made to the RAF at nearby Boulmer. The time and location fit exactly with the events going on 60 miles south of Staxton Wold.
comments.
I have in my possession statements from several civilian witnesses who saw two Lightning fighters chasing a UFO over the North Sea during the above period.
There were many other witnesses who came forward reporting UFOs. On several dates around this time.
When I approached the Ministry Of Defence in an attempt to get official documents related to this incident. I was informed that the file was still classified under the Official Secrets Act.
In the past few weeks a television team has also attempted to get documents from the MOD. They were initially told that the file was still classified. When they pressed for more information on the incident they were told that the documents had been shredded and when they pressed the MOD further they were told that a search would be made for the documents, but not to hold their breath.
The question has to be asked. Why would a file relating to a routine aircraft accident still be classified after all these years. It does not make sense. Unless they have something to hide.
If anybody who was involved in this incident has the nerve to give me any information, your name will be kept totally confidential, or will the truth of what really happened to this unfortunate pilot be lost forever.

THE DMSP SATELLITE PHOTOGRAPH;part one;
All quotes are from link source;
PREFACE;
quote;
"It was March 3, 1986 when I got my first phone call from Alaska.
The man on the phone wanted to tell me about a photo from a satellite which
showed a UFO. He had gotten my name from Budd Hopkins and he wanted me
to analyse the photo. He told me that Harley Rutledge had a studied it.
(Harley Rutledge was chairman of South Eastern Missouri State University.
More than 10 years earlier he had become known for his investigations of UFO
sightings near Cape Girardeau, Mo. He had written a book in 1973, PROJECT
IDENTIFICATION, which reported on the results of his investigations.)
The man calling, Mr. James Bounds, told me a friend of his had swiped
the picture from the weather office at Elmendorff Air Force Base in
Anchorage, AK in October,1978. According to the anonymous friend, when
this picture "came down" from the satellite NORAD went on full alert. The friend
knew about this because of his job at the air force base.
The photo sat in a drawer for years until this friend happened to tell
Bounds about it. Then they decided to find out if it could be a UFO. They
had spent three weeks with Rutledge and others investigating it. It seemed
to be real. The National Enquirer was willing to pay $50,000 for the rights
to publish the first satellite photo of a UFO if it could be proved to be a
UFO.
Could it have been a UFO? I asked him to describe the image. He said
it was a rectangular vehicle with no wings and 4 contrails, flying at 45,000
ft and traveling at Mach 6 or more. The location of the photo had been
determined by the land mass shown below. It was at Latitude 43 north,
Longitude 131:30 East...about 40 km southwest of Vladivostok, just off the
coast of the Soviet Union.
Then came the punch line: would I fly immediately to Anchorage to help
them analyze (and sell) this photo?
(Based on phone notes of conversation with James Bounds, March 3, 1986 at
3:30 PM.)
I was skeptical about this photo so I did nothing about it and I
didn't hear from Bounds again until the summer of 1987!! But a little over
a year (!) later, in late March 1987, I received from Philip Klass copies of
some material that Bounds and his business partner, John T. Smith, had sent
to Aviation Week Magazine. This material consisted of several newspaper
stories that reported on a press conference that had been held in Cape
Girardeau, MO, on Saturday, November 3, 1985 (4 months before he called me).
At this press conference Mr. Bounds and Mr. Smith had announced the results
of a three week investigation by Harley Rutledge of the satellite photo
which had been obtained by none other than John T. Smith, who said he was
on duty when the photo was taken.According to Smith, he kept the photo
because he thought the strange image was "cute." It had lain in a desk
drawer from the date of the photo, October 11, 1978, until 1985.
According to Mr. Smith, the photo had been verified as coming from a
defense weather satellite and he had determined that the strange object was
at about 45,000 ft and traveling at 4,000 to 5,000 mph.
Four months after receiving the newspaper stories about the November,
1985 press conference, I was called by Mr. Terry M. Slaughter of TMS
Enterprises, the new business partner of James Bounds. He wondered if I
would be willing to authenticate the photo. I said I would be willing to
study it with no guarantee as to what I might find. A few days later I
received the July 18, 1987 letter from Mr. Slaughter. With the letter he
included a nearly 1:1 scale color copy (cropped slightly at the edges) and a
blowup. Subsequently in August, 1987, Mr. Bounds supplied me with further
technical information he obtained by visiting the weather office at
Elmendorf Air Force Base.
The most important information was the actual
altitude of the orbit (460.9 nautical miles). He also gave me the name and
number of the air force publication that describes the DMSP satellite. This
enabled me to get a copy of that "Users Guide" for my own research purposes.
Mr. Slaughter wrote in his July,18, letter "Following the inspection of
the materials described above I would appreciate a written analysis of your
findings. Please enclose the photos with your reply."
It was late in 1987 when I finally finished my report on the satellite
photo. I do not recall whether or not I sent a copy to Mr. Slaughter. (I
did give the report to the Fund for UFO Research to sell.) I never heard
from him or Mr. Bounds again.
Incidently, I still have the prints that I was sent.
And I never did go to Anchorage, Alaska!
UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT RECORDED
BY A DMSP SATELLITE;
by Bruce Maccabee (c) 1987, 2000 by B. Maccabee;
(NOTE: this article was written in 1987 and was only available from the Fund for UFO Research. Major revisions have been made for this web
presentation.)
INTRODUCTION;
Two pictures made from a DMSP satellite negative (1) have been analyzed
to determine the nature of an Anomalous Image (AI) which appears in the
negative (see Figure 1 and the inset, Figure 2). Figure 2 is a blowup of the
portion of the negative that surrounds and includes the AI.
http://brumac.8k.com/DMSP/DMSP1.gif
Both pictures show the scan lines which formed the negative. Features
in the photographs are distinguished by various "blue levels" (as opposed to
grey levels). The cold tops of the clouds are white and the land features
are dark blue, with other features being paler shades of blue. The full
frame picture shows land features which have been tentatively identified as
the shore line roughly 40 km southwest of Vladivostock, FSR (2). It seems
likely that computer enhancement of the image in the original negative can
provide further details of the land mass and thereby increase the accuracy
with which the land mass is identified.
According to information provided with the pictures, they show infra-
red views of the earth. Information in the DMSP User's Guide (3) indicates
that the original negative is probably a "Mode Infra-red" (MI) picture of
the earth in the 8 - 13 micron infra-red band. Furthermore, since the very
cloud tops are cold and the land mass is much warmer it is apparent that the
MI output was inverted so that cold is white and warm is dark blue. (This is
a typical mode of operation.)
Because of the shape of its rather sharp outline and the dark
rectangular area within the image, the AI looks somewhat like an automobile
without wheels viewed obliquely from above. "Behind" (i.e., to the right of)
this "space car" are curved white line images which look like contrails.
Although the shape of the image resembles the shape of a recognizable object
(a car), the image shape is not necessarily the same as the shape of a
hypothetical Unidentified Object (UO) that could have caused the image. This
is because of the way the DMSP satellite creates a picture. It does not
photograph a whole area at once the way a camera does. Instead, it creates a
picture line by line like a TV set, but much more slowly. Therefore if there
is any relative motion between the satellite and the object it is
photographing, the satellite picture of the object may be seriously
distorted. This paper presents some examples of how distortions can occur as
a result of the fact that the photograph was created by a line scanning
mechanism. Knowledge of the way a scanning system can distort an image is
needed in order for an analyst to make an "educated guess" as to what the
true shape might have been.
(Some of the public claims made in late 1986
that this photo shows a huge object at the level of the cloud tops result
from the failure to take into account the distortions inherent in this sort
of scanning system.)
Although it is not possible to determine exactly what caused the AI, it
is possible to determine what did not cause it. It is shown here that the AI
was not created by random electronic or mechanical noise and therefore must
be the image of something really out there, a UO. It is also shown that the
UO was not a cloud nor an aircraft flying near the surface of the earth. It
is also highly unlikely that it was some other satellite traveling in an
orbit beneath the DMSP satellite. The general conclusion is that the exact
shape of the UO and its exact nature cannot be determined.
TECHNICAL DETAILS OF THE DMSP SATELLITE SYSTEM;
The satellite is in a nearly polar, sun-synchoronous orbit with an
inclination to the equator at its ascending mode of 98.70 so it travels
basically north during half of an orbit and south during the other half. Its
altitude,A , is about (1,4) A = 461 nm (nm = nautical mile = 6077 ft = 1.854
km) and its orbital period is about l01.6 min = 6096 sec.
The polar radius
of the earth, Re is about 3432 nm (6356 km) so it travels about
2(pi)(3432+461) = 24460 nm in each orbit (pi = 3.1416). The orbital
velocity, Vs, is therefore Vs = (24460 nm/101.6 min) = 240.7 nm/min or 4.012
nm/sec = 24,381 ft/sec (7.430 km/sec; Mach 21 if Mach 1 is taken as the
speed of sound at sea level). As it travels (nearly due north or south) it
scans perpendicular to the orbital track (i.e., nearly east-west) with an
optical system that collects infra-red radiation and focusses the radiation
on a detector.
The output voltage of the detector at any instant is
proportional to the average temperature of the area that is within the
Instantaneous Field Of View (IFOV; the angular size of the area being viewed
at any given time) of the optical system at that instant (see Figure 3).
http://brumac.8k.com/DMSP/DMSP2.gif
The IFOV during MI operation is (3) 0.00533 radians (abbreviated "rad")
or 0.305 degrees. Thus, at the surface of the earth directly below the
satellite (the nadir), the instantaneous area is a circle roughly 0.00533
rad x 461 nm = 2.45 nm in diameter. This is the minimum width of the strip
which is created by the scanning system. When the sensor scans east or west
away from directly below the satellite the instantaneous area on the earth
grows and becomes elliptical with a maximum width (measured in the north-
south direction) of about 12 nm and a maximum (east-west) length that grows
to about 30 nm as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. The angular range of the
scan, 55.6 degrees either side of center, corresponds to about 1600 nm (2960
