a JJ Abrams project
Just seen this. Damn this came out of nowhere! Looks intriguing, just found this from wiki...
Quote:
Producer J.J. Abrams called the film "a blood relative of Cloverfield."[4] In an interview with Collider, Mary Elizabeth Winstead said: “As it goes on, it gets progressively darker and darker, and less and less funny, and weirder”.
My first thought with the "blood relative" of Cloverfield comment is that it's not another monster movie, per se, but operates in the same universe. Like, these characters live in the aftermath of what happened when monsters ravaged our world and we had to fight back.
It looks intense!
im thinking aliens this time
must watch
Been trying to find more infos on this. The female character is saved from a car crash by John Goodman's character and he tells her he's saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable.
Suggests it takes place after the first, would be easy to assume the humans have chemical attacked the creatures, but it could be the other way round? Or is Goodman's character using the events in the first as an excuse to keep him and the others locked up for some other unknown reason?
I recommend this one, I thought the last 15 mins were completely unnecessary but definitely worth checking out.
The gawd Goodman>>>>>>
Nah the last 15 minutes were fantastic. The whole movie was. I like that it ratchets up the tension then just when you think Michelle might be out of danger, some extra crazy shit happens. I would definitely watch a sequel but I can't see them topping this one, it had me hooked start to finish.
Not sure what this flick has to do with the first Cloverfield though, maybe its a kind of reboot? Doesn't matter I guess.
**Spoilers**
If I recall the radio at the start talking about unexplained blackouts, pertaining to the events in the first film. The radio at the end talked about how humanity had taken back the eastern seaboard, giving the impression humanity had turned the tide and were now winning.
I didn't like the last 15 mins as it took away all the mystery of the first film (where did the creature come from? Sea? Space?) in the most unimaginable way possible (played out alien invasion scenario). Also the whole 'come to Houston and join the fight' can only mean the sequel will be on some popcorn flick bullshit.
I would have ended it with the female looking into the horizon after escaping and seeing something CRAZY, like a mother ship or a herd of the creatures from the first movie...and then cutting to black. It then would have sparked similar discussion to the first and added to the legend.
Okay I understand how you feel, that would have been a good ending too. But yeah personally I wouldn't change anything, it was an exciting ending to a tense psychological thriller. I like that we don't really know whats going on in the world until that final payoff. Very satisfying way to end it.
But yeah I don't know where a sequel could go from here. The first 2 movies are both quite unique and not typical monster movies so it would be disappointing if they make a typical action movie next.
Yeah that was definitely one of the things this movie did great.
Apparently Abrams has stated he has an idea for a third movie that will connect the first two better.
Also I read there was a different ending originally...

Before the thriller took on a title alluding to Abrams’ 2008 found footage monster movie Cloverfield, this project was called The Cellar. The end The Cellar’s spec script has Michelle escaping the bunker, then getting in Howard’s pickup truck, driving away, still seeing no signs of any kind of chemical or nuclear or alien attack. She drives toward Chicago, where her family is (or was). And then, in the final couple shots of the film, once she’s crested a hill, she sees Chicago, reduced to rubble.
I think Michelle could get to Houston and find that she was tricked. I'm definitely interested in her story.
