i'll be going there on a school (but not school-sponsored) trip in december, what i wanted to know is there any unique restaurants, shops, interesting places, etc. that any of you would highly recommend? i want to see a different new york than running around going clothes shopping with a group of people i don't even want to be around, so i'm just going to wander off and do my own thing.

if ur a hip hop fan, go to fat beats!!!!u might even meet a rapper there.
Check out the East Village for bars, shops and restaurants (St. Marks and 3rd Ave.) Nice spot for young people. Union Square's a nice spot at night if you feel like people watching. Also the Lower Est side is a nice spot for Bar hopping. The Lotus Lounge is cool for Reggae and a beer.
