Handheld gaming systems
I'm just gonna try putting this thread here, since this forum doesn't really exist anymore.
I was thinking of getting a hand held gaming system. I know absolute fuck all about them. Like I don't even know the names of them. I want something that's a bit out of date, but not old enough for the games to be rare and/or expensive or anything. Basically just looking for the hand held equivalent of a ps3, in terms of current relevance and value.
Survival horror is my fave genre, so I'm looking for something with a good few titles in that genre.
Any tips?
Cheers

All that comes to mind is this
-
Just buy a Nintendo Switch or the lite version.

The regular version is expensive atm cos Nintendo can't keep up with demand during the lockdown. The portable version which is less popular is still at it's regular price.
Why do you want an old console noel? I mean if you don't want something specific just download some games for your phone.
-
Having reread your post, maybe a PSP. You can probably find a lot of zombie type games for it on ebay for cheap.
-
my psvita is one of the best things i've ever invested in
games, live tv, gps, satellite radio, insane graphics, internet, music storage, file storage etc
-
I did a bit of research at work yesterday, n the Vita looked like the go. Only thing was the horror survival titles I looked up on eBay were not at all cheap or easy to get. Not one of them.
I'll prob just leave it for now. Dunno when I'd use it anyway. Just thought it'd b cool to own. I'll keep an eye out in the local Facebook buy, swap, sell page. See if anyone lists a bundle for cheap. Someone did one like a week ago, it was under $100 and came with loads of games. That's what gave me the idea. Unfortunately it's sold now n I have no idea what system it was. I think prob one of the older Nintendo ones.
Cheers for the replies.

I got a PS Vita today. One of the ones with that hengaku shit, where u can DL n play any PSP n PS1 games for free. Has a bunch of vita games installed on it too. Fucked around with it at work tonight, n I'm pretty stoked with it.

nice! enjoy that ish, noel

I'm too old for video games and only play when my kids try to drag me in.
I do soduku puzzles or you can find me on a Chess phone app called Chess By Post username: sensea36 https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...tFree&hl=en_US
challenge me to a match.
My old man used to do crossword puzzles but I never liked the trivial stuff
-
I swear soduko is too difficult for me, even the entry level. I tried doing a few last summer and they took me ages ... and I didn't even complete them! as far back as I remember I always had problems with maths. I'm officially a 'tard
I love crossword puzzles though.
at home video games were forbidden so I didn't grow up in that gaming culture. never took an interest as an adult either but I SALUTE all of you who have gotten so much joy out of video games over the years
-
I have had the PS Vita since 2012. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is my favorite game. I've been playing the game since 2009 on the PSP. 1,700 hours logged.
-
I just realized u can DL all the actual vita games for free on this thing too. Wasn't clear on that until now.
I'll have to check out that monster hunter joint.

It's a classic. Hard but classic. It's 11 years old, though.

I'm gonna try Silent Hill origins. I wish openEmu supported Vita. Hopefully in a future release. It's nice downloading any game ROM for free and playing with a synced controller. So much money saved to test stuff out.
I finally got origins for my ps2 for a decent price a while back, but it was shortly after I'd finally upgraded to ps3, n I was kinda hooked on the upgraded graphics n shit. I did try it tho, but I think I just got stuck straight away n gave up.
But yeah, was one of the first games I dl'ed on the vita. Maybe I'll try it again on that. Silent hill is just about my favourite series of games. I actually dl'ed the very first game in the series too, which I've never seen or played at all.
I was into gaming as a kid too, but thru my whole life I've thankfully always been much more drawn to physical outdoor activities. I wouldn't fucking dream of ever gaming or even turning my TV on during the day.
-
Over the last week at work I've customized my vita with all the most appealing PSP, ps1, n vita games I could find. Funny thing is I'll almost certainly never play most of them, lolz. I really don't know when I'm even gonna play the fucking thing, lolololol.
Sure it'll come in handy one day.

I made my kids a raspberry pi emulator and they love it. It plays nintendo, sega, playstation n64 games, SNES, etc. I got N64, nes, SNES, sega knockoff controllers. Everything cost less than $100 total off ebay.
I heard a bunch of rom sites were shut down recently this year. Finding roms online will be a little bit harder.
This geek seems to keep up on things.

I think I'll retire the Vita and then purchase a Switch. The Vita hasn't had a good game since 2014. Jason releases weak games with PS1 graphics. The Switch is a new system with tons of games. I've been playing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite since 2009.

That sucks. Isn't that game in Japanese (no English)?

I started in on 'The 3rd Birthday' which definitely gave the early Resident Evil franchise a run for it's money. Their developers pushed the edge w/ that game and introduced stuff you see on modern platforms.
Also playing CRUSH psp, which is one of the stranger, lesser known challenging puzzle games (2D/3D). It's similar to "The Witness PS4". They both start easy but you'll end of walking away for days and rack your brain like pool balls at an open billiard table.
These higher levels are Bobby Fischer Autist shit, but I'm knocking them down.
Ok. I'll have to check this out.
In regards to the PS Vita, there are lots of videos on hacking the device but I'm not a programmer, in IT nor do I want to spend 20+ minutes installing/uploading software that may brick my Vita. I tried it and got lost during the instructions. I almost threw my Vita at the wall.
I wish Sony didn't kick it to the side. The system lacked quality games and the expensive memory cards contributed to its downfall. Sony gave up.
-
glad you went with the ps vita.
have a blast bro

It's kind of weird a Japanese multi-nat company would fuck up that hard.
Sony always does that. That's how you make money.
-
The dude I bought my vita off, he hacks them n sells them on eBay, all with the same shit pre-installed, had already put that 3rd birthday game on it. I heard it's supposed to b good. Watched a bit of a video on it. Might get to that one next. I was playing resident evil revelations 2, n it was kinda pretty good, but I didn't like the combat n kinda wasn't really enjoying it, so I'll prob abandon it for now.
The worst thing with the memory cards is they cost an absolute fucking fortune. Mine came with a 64gb one, n I've loaded it right up. I have more games than I could ever need on it, but I would've loved the freedom of having 128gb. I'll just have delete any games I'm not really into to free up space to try other ones.

Ok. Good, Noel. Hacking a Vita takes skill.
I just purchased a Nintendo Switch Lite because the Vita is so old, lacks Sony support, weak interface, and the lacks good quality games. I've been playing the Vita since 2012. Just Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Gravity Rush, Need for Speed, and Wipeout. These games are SUPER dated and old. I've lost interest.
Sony announced the they're out of the handheld gaming consoles. The Nintendo Switch Lite is far more superior in terms of games, screen quality, built quality, and it's newer.

CRUSH is insane. I'm still trying to finish that last level. Another PSP gem is Echochrome.
These were the reasons I wanted to play on the PSP.
-
I recall it being published by SEGA.
-
I had a look at that 3rd Birthday joint recently. Looked rad, but did the training sort of part at the start n it was a bit too complicated for my liking. I'm a pretty simple gamer, lolz. I started on Obscure: The Aftermath instead. Enjoying that joint. Typical ps2 style horror survival.
I'll check out those other games u cunts r talking about too.
-
Yeah prob a bit too involved for a cunt like me who doesn't game much. Especially cos when I do I like to mix it up n spend a bit of thyme on a few different games.
I'd return to it under the right circumstances tho.
-
Lolz I didn't know they were remaking that shit. Those first 4 tony hawk games were some of the best video games ever. Still fux wit' my epic custom parks in part 2 to this day. Would totally fux wit' remakes.
Funny, I was just wondering about ps4 about half an hour ago n looked up a few things on eBay to c where prices r at. I heard ps5 is out, or coming out, whatever, they're advertising it, dunno if it's out or not...but yeah, figured the price of ps4 shit might b about to drop pretty heavily.
Whatever tho, I've still got plenty of ps3 shit to work thru. No hurry at all.

The PS5 is set to release this November or December. It'll be $499 - $599.
I brought the Nintendo Switch two weeks ago. It wasn't for me. Remastered games. Nothing new. I returned it last week.
-
I want to get the PS5. I may wait for the price to drop. 500 is crazy unless the thing can also suck my dick.
-
PS5 or PC?
Can You Build a GAMING PC with PS5 Specs? | The Tech Chap

Although the consoles have the edge right now and tech not even available on PC yet, the ability to get PC software games cheaper gives the PC the edge IMO.
If you can hold off until black Friday, the PC build is even more price advantaged. Plus the PC can double as a music edit production studio, video editing, etc.

Reminds me of a funny scene in 'Years and years'.

I'm not a big gamer like that. I wouldn't play it enough to justify the price tag.
I already made that joke.
-
With Sony releasing games on PC too, the justification for buying a PS5 has become less. But they did a terrific job supplying quality content on the PS4.
-
Lolz @ jokes.
Had a quick look at the t hawk remake. Def will fux widdit when I eventually get a ps4 one day. Such a shame they didn't keep coming with strong sequels. I got the Skate games on ps3, n while I think they look friggin' awesome, just couldn't adapt to the game play. I got the Ollie Ollie games on my vita too, which r rad n exactly like little cartoon sequences we used to draw in high school, lolz, but again, gameplay is a bit tricky to me. Tony hawk gameplay just flowed.
I don't know y, but gaming PC's just seem like a level of gamer that I NEVER wanna reach, lolololol.
-
I think if skate n Ollie Ollie were the first skating games u played, the control system would actually b quite good, but when u've got a tony hawk background it's just so dramatically different.

What does grill mean? I just googled it n the most fitting definition I came up with was taking LSD.

You are all amatuers.
I played Skate Or Die.

The game was horrible.

Skate Or Die is a classic!
