Black Milk should've sold more than 7k.. it's a great album..
I didn't know DANGERDOOM sold that much.. I bought it though..
Canibus also deserves more sales..
wow, bronze naz and black market struggled big time to get sales. and to think, black market had to split that between 4 people!!! wow.
damn, just saw cilva, didn't even sell 4,000. wow. i wonder how much he made off the album? maybe a few thousand dollars. oh, and rza is down to selling just 21,000 records. man, hip hop fans are fucked up buying some wack ass bullshit.
thats a pretty legit source, but I was sure fishscale went Gold a while ago, i guess I was given some mis-information.
dang... torture papers only sold 22k... that album is ILL... -__-
Man, I dunno bout ya'll but that page makes me cringe.
Camp Lo and Killah Priest only sold 2k records so far? Shit!
we are fortunate that some of these cats even bother to bring us music anymore. i suppose they still make money doing tours and selling cd's and other merchandise at the venues. still, priest put out an incredible album and he gets thanked for that with 2000 sales????
People forget though that this is only US SALES, if we look at worldwide figures they would be much more impressive. I can tell this info is misleading because I know that Hi-Teck's album "Technology 2" is Babygrandes highest selling record.
a few things, besides Hell Razah "Renaissance Child" is easily in my top 10 for 2007... & i dig Wisemen a lot also...
1) tho' i'd love to see other indie #s, like Public Enemy, Devin The Dude, Snowgoons, etc. you can see the continual dropoff... Anyone think Alchemist would sell that many today? But, if you figure x % less people downloaded then...
2) I'm ** NOT ** glad to be right but I predicted horrible sales for Killah Priest based on poor in-store stocking & almost no street presence; sorry to say it's even worse than I expected.
3) Sa-Ra is surprisingly low, I thought, & even El-P; I don't like him but that's neither here nor there, he got A LOT of press, has "indie rock" crossover, etc. I do grant that he's a real artist, & kind of dark too, which is probably why (crap) like Aesop sells more but...
worldwide ** is ** important; almost everyone here loves someone like Shabazz but i can tell ya'll, Killah Priest is like fucking Jay-Z compared to 'Bazz even here in BK: he's almost totally unknown but he can get shows in Europe, etc.
4) Prodigy "Return of the Mack" did surprisingly well in this context.
5) Where's Saigon?
wtf. I thought Fishscale went gold?
return of the mack was pretty tight IMO there will always be curious back in the day mobb fans
J- oh, def. I'm a big Mobb fan & even rate "Blood Money" a 7/10 (could have been better if the best of their G-Unit stuff made the cut, check various mixtapes), I just meant that was a pretty good #, all things told.
I'm also curious how Mos Def did. Remember when it was going to be recalled & then get another issue? More major label lies but I guess everybody figured out... eh, who cares? (Including me.)
What I take out of this thing, even incomplete, is that tho' we fight amongst ourselves about stuff, it's a really bad time for hip-hop overall. I'm a 50 fan, not into Kanye, but truth is, NEITHER of them mean ** anything ** to the game overall. The do well for themselves but Graduation #1, Curtis #2 is NOT going to help Hell Razah, Black Milk, etc etc. (Don't even get me started about Dipset junk, regardless of how much street cred they have in some parts of the city.)
Lastly, all those bonus dvds (like Cilva, like Keith Murray Best Buy, etc) don't seem to help much either.
It's sad but definitley not surprising at all. The only artists who are gonna sell are those who got a rep outside of this label..i.e Redman, Prodigy, Ghostface. There's a couple of interesting things about it though...I never knew MF Doom had so many fan. As for Canibus's last album I might be the only one who thinks that shit was garbage so I'm glad it didn't sell many units.
Wow thats interesting. Albums like Wisemen approaching only sold 2,500! Seriously is there any point in releasing it? Prbably cost more to produce it.
Ghost has to be fairly happy with 320,000 right now.
funny how meth sold more than red w/ no video
That's what happens when for every 1 person that actually buys an album, you have at least 10 that download it for free.
dont see why anyone would be surprised by these numbers. hardly any of these artists are commercially viable and weren't promoted at all.
do ya'll have any feeling if a higher % of people buy (as opposed to dl) "indie rock" type cds compared to rock? i think so, mostly because the packaging-- & album concepts-- are almost always better.
some guys claim to make good $$$ via mixtapes & all but a lot people get used to not copping "the real thing," which is usually just a cd & crappy two-page booklet anyway.
hey they actually updated the list.
Not surprising, I would like to see statistics for all genres. Only records that sold over 2,000 though or the list would be too long.
The thing about Fishscale was that it SHIPPED gold but never SOLD gold. There is a big difference and often you will hear artists and/or record companies brag about how much a certain album SOLD when in fact they are just giving you the SHIPPING numbers, meaning the number of albums that were shipped to record stores. For example, in Ghost's case, Fishscale has SOLD 320,00 copies but SHIPPED gold that means that there are 180,000 copies of Fishscale sitting on shelves in stores right now. Also, as someone else pointed out earlier, these are only US numbers. Combined with overseas sales, I'm sure Ghost did sell gold because Wu is pretty big overseas if I'm not mistaken.
riaa.com doesnt have fishscale listed for a gold album so if the album went gold it went gold internationally.
thanx for the chart it was an intresting read, it's bad to see some of those classic wu cd's do so bad alot of people is missing out on the real hip hop
I hope this is wrong.
Black market militia
killah priest
hell razah
canibus
all were really good albums and deserved a lot more sales than that. Stop downloading all these albums you stupid motherfuckers. Don't know whos actually a fan and not buying these albums but if you are then you are the reason for this.
damn fishscale is sellin quite alot of a year old cd......
i'm guilty as sin when it comes to download albums but i'm proud to say i got the original black market millitia album, i hope they find away to stop people from downloading. i'm from the 3rd world & these albums don't reach our shores but that's no excuse, i'm gratefull for what i got but i'm not happy on how i got it
Co-sign. How the fuck can people call themselves fans when all they do is download music. Fair enough if, like RAMESH, you cant get the Cd's but you buy them any chance you get, but for tight pricks who have the choice and pick downloading - if the artists like KP, Canibus, BMM, Hell Razah, Cilvaringz etc decide not to make anymore coz of poor sales, YOUR the fuckin reason
yeah word up, it's fucked up.. i know alot of people who be asking like "why the fuck are you buying a cd when you can just downloading it" when i buy a album. that mentality is bullshit since everybody like to listen to good music.
man these are bad.....I think its more the industry/media control, combined with Dl's. If MTV or BET wanted to, they could switch up to play better music. By better music I mean music with a quality to it, 'not just anybody can do this song' type shit.
Instead of the same 10 videos, and the same style of music, why not play a show with some Brother Ali, MF Doom, Alchemist, Wisemen, KP, etc and other "underground" cats. I know enough people would watch it. Once all the party and club music is gone, this is whats next. I like to club and party too but damn. Everyday isnt a party.
I thought making a good album, could get you a fanbase, but there are several good albums here that sold wood.
I'm especially surprised at:
Killah Priest2691 - CLASSIC. This is true artistry.
Wisemen 2534 - Classic. Beats and rhymes with substance. Tru Artistry.
These are two of the best quality albums this year. what do these artists have to do?
We are killing these artists careers. Ice Cube Predicted it on Death Certificate:
"pretty soon hip hop won't be so nice, no Ice Cube, just Vanilla Ice"
the way i see it....these record sales are great...
peep...
total- 1.7 million
wu-tang clan/affiliates- 637,000
35 albums released with an average of 51,000 sold in barely 3 years independently. no album sold less than 2,300 and that was released in '07
far from bad numbers.
bronze is a perfect example...
think differently has sold 54,000 since oct of '05
great migration has sold 7,700 since apr of '06
wisemen has sold 2,700 since feb of '07
do the chart on that and it's damn good for independent record sales....steady going up...gotta understand how the industry works before you think the numbers are bad.
still, im sure that 2,300 for camp lo and killah priest is wrong, they definetly sold more than that, this is probably just american stores figures not taking into account online or overseas sales.
