So, the 5th Wu Tang Clan album was officially released 366 days ago in the USA (367 for us Europeans).
How have your opinions changed on the controversial album?
I always thought it was great, I liked the direction and feel of the album, although sometimes I do feel it is just a tad too slow.
rza said 8D has to grow on u first but i think it has the opposite effect - it gets worse, i really thought it was dope when it came out but now its gettin a lil yawny
Well I think it did grow on me, some songs that didn't hit me first time round opened up upon further listens, examples being Gun Will Go and Sunlight.
I slowly tuned into their vibe and appreciate them more now.
I think the tracklisting is a bit crappy on the album, it's flow and structure suffers when energetic ass songs like Unpredictable are followed by mellow old Heart gently Weeps.
I haven't listened to it since a few weeks after it dropped, only tracks I really liked were sunlight and life changes...
Starter was alright when you're girl trippin...
but other than that it was... meh
Jesus Fuck,that's been a year already? I'm getting old. It seems like it dropped 4months ago or something. The years fly by now. I'll be 70 soon.
It is still disappointing but it isn't a bad album by any means. Some of the production is good but for the most part it isn't great. It is not what anyone wanted including Clan (minus RZA). The rest of the Clan's performances make it good still because the lyricism which you can always count on. Meth was great on it and I thought all of the Clan did a solid job. I still wish Ghost was on Life Changes. The overdone singing from even talented guys like Gerald Alston & the legend George Clinton is too much. Dexter Wiggles is awful though, that song was ruined by his hook.
In the end, it was a decent album that should've been a timeless album. I hope they make one more go at it and hopefully RZA's production on OB4CL 2 will give us all hope he's still got some classic Wu beats in him. If not, get Math, 4th, Bronze, True Master etc. and even DJ Muggs, Black Milk, PR, Sermon, etc. cause they've shown w/ GZA, Ghost, MK, Meth and on various affiliates albums that they can do the job.
Completely forgetable, i've had no inclination to replay this album except for wolves and windmill.
i hated it the first time I heard it...then loved it for about a month and it grew on me, i was playing it over and over in my car..
now i realize I haven't listened to it in like 10 months....
i heard the album and still do, its classic material, theres so many colors so every one can have the one they want...
^^^yeah when the first album dropped i loved it. just because of the fact that the clansmen made some new songs together.. now i must say i barely listen to it. and if so. its only 1 or 2 songs.
i guess it's a good album it didn't grow on me, but i can listen it here and there.
1. Campfire- second best kung fu skit, great 'rzaish' RZA beat, raw, even though i didn't like the claps. Awful Cappadonna.
2.Take It Back-real banger, EMB came thru wiyh great joint.
3. Get Them Out Ya Way Pa-good multy layered drums, one of the best songs on the album
4. Rushing Elephants-great beat, excelent verses (i didn't like RZA's one though)
5. Unpredictable-RZA and his crossovers, no no no....Deck was good
6. The Heart Gently Weeps-overproduced...nice verses...but this song is too sterile.. lack of trhat wu energy in it
7.Wolves- i'm proly the only guy on this site that actually likes the second version more than the first (1st was great too)
8.Gun Will Go-i'd say this is a best song on the album....
9.Sunlight-weak imitation of 'sunshower', but solid effort
10.Stick Me for My Riches-solid verses, Deck should take that surgery, boring GZA, i don't like the hi hats on this...
11. Starter-lol @ this pathetic quasi basketball pedo shit.
12.Windmill-great beat, solid verses, Deck should take that surgery (lol), Crappadonna....
13.Weak Spot-classic wu banger, i even liked GZA's flow on it

still love this album, the whole atmosphere of the production was brilliant in my opinion and most of the MC's performed really well. I still bump this from time to time unlike forgetable albums like "Digi Snacks" and "Pro Tools".
The album is pretty good. Its not something u can play weeks on in. With me Ill play it for a while then forget about it, but when I play it again I fall in love all over again.

An album that has a song like "Gun Will Go" with a beat switch like that, and 3 groundsmashing verses, can't be bad.
Overall, it's 4,5 star album for me. It only lacked a little energy and that 'classic' touch on some tracks like Rushing Elephants and Unpredictable. Of course, mathematically it lacked ( - Dexter Wiggles )

A year later this is still a really great album in my opinion. 3rd best Clan group album, and an overall solid effort from everyone. I understand some of the hate the album gets, but about half of it I still don't get. Whatever, those who aren't feeling it I feel sorry for.
It's all just opinion but I'm surprised you liked it more than Pro Tools. I think Pro Tools is an amazing album and another outstanding addition to the Wu discog.Quote:

I listen to it, but never intentionaly. But it's not like I skip it, cuz it ain't that bad, just disappointing to that point I wanna listen to 30 other better wu-related releases.

^indeed it did. I'ma have to do that too. There are two tracks I've been bumpin from time to time though and those be Windmill and Weak Spot. Classic Wu shit right there! This album could've been much more dope without all the singing artists, that was the main shit that kinda ruined it for me as a whole.
I still listen to a few joints off it every so often, but it doesn't have the shelf life of other classic Wu albums. Campfire, Take It Back, Rushing Elephants, Gun Will Go...even Heart Gently Weeps are dope. But I can't help but get pissed at RZA for putting out a half-assed album without the entire Clan supporting it. The changes he made to Unpredictable are horrible (the original is so much better), Stick Me For My Riches is awful (why the hell is GZA singing the hook?), and the production on Weak Spot is, well, weak. Plus, with Watch Your Mouth not cleared, there is no posse cut like every other Wu album.

It's a decent LP but could have been so much better. Way too much singing on the LP. They should just give what the fans really want: A straight banger. No experimenting,no bullshit. Just hard & grimey beats and dope lyrics.
Still average in my book.

I don't really like it anymore than I did when it was released. Its an average album with some very embarrasing moments on it. I listen to quite a few songs on it in isolation here and there but as an album I think its way below any standards that should be expected of Wu Tang.
