there is an app on my smartphone that does this. it came with the phone
plug the usb cable into your phone and your computer and download the driver for your exact phone. on that driver you can probably choose to use the internet but the usb has to be plugged in at least with the crackberry
My HTC just asks what I want to do when I hook up a usb cable (internet pass through/charge/data transfer/etc
