TAKEOVER: 36 Chambers
Thursday, Sept 21
6–9 PM
$20 (general) / $18 (student) / $10 (member)
Admission to the feature exhibition Flower Power is an additional $5
Calling all hip-hop devotees, art lovers and style enthusiasts! RZA and Mustafa Shaikh, founders of contemporary fashion label 36 Chambers, take over the museum for a night of fashion, music, art and insightful dialogue. The highlight of the evening is a conversation between RZA and Jeff Chang of Stanford’s Institute for the Diversity in the Arts, who writes on hip-hop, race, art and culture. Plus DJs, b-boy dancers, art happenings and a first look pop-up sale of the 36 Chambers fall/winter 2017 line, which was inspired by works in the Asian Art Museum collection.
Eastern philosophy and arts have been a longtime passion for RZA, the driving force behind revolutionary New York rap collective Wu-Tang Clan. A devotee of martial arts films — the name of the group derives from the 1983 Hong Kong movie “Shaolin and Wu Tang” and the sounds of Kung Fu infiltrate his music — RZA is also deeply influenced by other aspects of Asian culture, from Buddhist sutras to Chinese calligraphy. The new 36 Chambers line shows this influence in such pieces such as an embroidered satin jacket and line of vegan accessories.
The night includes dancers and DJs from MVMNT Studio riffing on “Shaolin and Wu Tang,” calligraphy demonstrations and other art happenings throughout the museum, and an opportunity to customize your own clothing with patches from 36 Chambers.
Tickets
The conversation between RZA and Jeff Chang will happen twice throughout the evening, the first conversation taking place at 6:30 and the second at 8:00 PM. Timed tickets are required for entrance.
Tickets to the 6:30 PM conversation
