Rear Admiral Jeremiah Andrew Denton, Jr. - US Senator from Alabama; Founder o/t National Forum Foundation

"Linebacker II ... it wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back, it was the sledgehammer that hit the camel in the head where he should've been hit back in 1964 ... every prisoner believes that."

Jeremiah A. Denton, Jr. spent seven years and seven months as a prisoner of war. He suffered severe mistreatment, and was subjected to four years of solitary confinement. He is well-known for two incidents as a POW: The first was blinking out with his eyes the message "T-O-R-T-U-R-E" in Morse Code during a television interview, confirming that POWs were being tortured. And as the senior POW with the first group of POWs released in 1973, he spoke for the group as the plane landed in the Philippines. Admiral Denton's naval career spanned 34 years. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1980 and served until 1987. In 1983, he founded and continues to be involved with the National Forum Foundation. In collaboration with Ed Brandt, Admiral Denton chronicled his experience in the book When Hell was in Session.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he was commissioned in 1946.
While flying an A6 Intruder from the U.S.S. Independence,
he was shot down over North Vietnam on July 18, 1965.
Released in February, 1973 after spending seven years
and seven months as a POW, Jeremiah Denton went on to become a
    United States Senator from Alabama.

Jeremiah A. Denton, Jr. was born on July 15, 1924 in Mobile, Alabama. He attended McGill Institute, Spring Hill College, and the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1946.

His 34-year naval career included service on a variety of ships, in many types of aircraft. His principal field of endeavor was naval operations. He also served as a test pilot, flight instructor, and squadron commander. In 1957, he was credited with revolutionizing naval strategy and tactics for nuclear war as architect of the "Haystack Concept", while serving on the staff of Commander, South Fleet, as Fleet Air Defense Officer.

Denton graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College and the senior course at the Naval War College, where his thesis on international affairs received top honors by earning the prestigious President 's Award. In 1964, he received the degree of Master of Arts in International Affairs from George Washington University.

In June 1965, he began a combat tour in Vietnam as prospective Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron Seventy-Five. On July 18, 1965, Denton was leading a group of twenty-eight aircraft from the USS lNDEPENDENCE in an attack on enemy installations near Thanh Hoa, when he was shot down and captured by local North Vietnamese troops.

He spent the next seven years and seven months as a prisoner of war, suffering severe mistreatment and becoming the first U.S. military captive to be subjected to four years of solitary confinement.

    [...]

In 1977, Denton retired from the Navy and returned to Mobile where he soon founded and led the non-profit organization "Coalition for Decency" ( CFD) and served as a consultant to the President of Spring Hill College.

Denton was elected to the United States Senate in November 1980. In so doing, he became the first Republican ever elected by popular vote to the U S. Senate from Alabama, the first resident of Mobile elected to the U.S. Senate, the first retired military flag officer and the first Catholic elected to any statewide office in Alabama, and the first retired Admiral or General elected to the U.S. Senate by any state.

Denton served in the Senate from January 1981 to January 1987. His major committee assignments included: the Judiciary Committee where he chaired the Sub-Committee on Security and Terrorism; the Labor and Human Resources Committee where he was Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Aging, Family, and Human Services; the Armed Services Committee; and the Veterans Affairs Committee. He re-named and re-formed CFD as the National Forum Foundation with goals supporting National Security through Peace through Strength, the concept of One Nation under God, the strength of the institution of the family, and other goals paralleling and developing support for his principle Senate projects.

In 1983, Senator Denton served as an observer of the El Salvadoran election and as a key advisor to President Reagan on the successful effort to stop the Nicaraguan Communist aggression in Central America and to replace the Communist government in Nicaragua with a free government headed by Madame Chamorro.

During his Senate years, the National Forum Foundation was effective in helping change public and congressional opinion to support Reagan and Bush Cold War initiatives, and it helped him sponsor final passage a number of significant bills improving National Security, Anti-Terrorism, the Institution of the Family and Church-State issues.

In 1985, Denton established the highly acclaimed international aid program now known as The Denton Program. Working on a space available basis with the U.S. Military, this program has transported over 50 million pounds of critical equipment and supplies to needy people throughout the world at reduced or no cost to other international humanitarian organizations.

Following his U.S. Senate term, he was appointed in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan to be Chairman of the Presidential Commission on Merchant Marine and Defense, which he led throughout its two-year mandate.

In 1998, under the auspices of NFF, Denton established the TRANSFORM Program, which is similar to the Denton Program but uses commercial spare space. This Program has immeasurably greater potential for increased volume of shipping of aid and has been praised throughout the world for its work.

In addition to his leadership of the National Forum Foundation, more recently re=named the Admiral Jeremiah Denton Foundation (AJDF)…<ajdf.org>. Denton presently lectures on national and international affairs; while serving as a Member of Board of Visitors of St. Thomas Aquinas College, the Advisory Council of Christendom College, the Board of Advisors of St. Augustine Academy and Thomas Aquinas College and as Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Thomas More Law Center. He also has primary responsibility as their Strategy Director. He is a member of the Board of Insure.com., Inc. and of Judy McCloskey’s Catholic Military Organization.

Senator Denton is married to the former Jane Maury. They have seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and three great granddaughters.

The Knights of Malta is a 900-year-old fellowship modeled after an ancient order of soldier-monks who merrily slaughtered thousands of "infidels." The KoM is dedicated to "inculcating lessons in chivalry and courage, and inspire a militant spirit in opposition to all non-Christian ideologies and powers." The American branch of the KoM counts among its members former CIA directors William Casey and John McCone. McCone is remembered as the architect of the bloody 1973 military coup in Chile. Others include former CIA chief of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton; William and James Buckley; Alexander Haig; former treasury secretary William Simon (and his son, Bill Simon), and the rabid critic of John Kerry, former Senator and Admiral Jeremiah Denton, who sponsored a bill allowing US Air Force transports to ship goods for AmeriCares, a privilege accorded no other relief organization.

General Alfred Maximilian Gruenther - Supreme Allied Commander in Europe (SACEUR); Chief o/t Advanced Planning Group; Director of US Joint Defense Staff; President o/t American Red Cross

Born at Platte Center, Nebraska, March 3, 1899, he graduated from West Point in 1917.
He became famous for the quality of his staff and tactical planning work, becoming World War II's youngest Major General.

After the war, he served as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe from 1953 to 1956 as a Full General. Pretty exclusive company when one considers those who have held this office (Dwight D Eisenhower, 1951-1952( later President of the United States); Matthew B Ridgway, 1952-1953 (who later was Army Chief of Staff); Lauris Norstad, 1956-1962; Lyman L Lemnitzer, 1963-1969 (who later was Chairman JCS); Andrew J Goodpaster, 1969-1974; Alexander M Haig, 1974-1979; Bernard W Rogers,1979-1987; John R Galvin, 1987-1992; John M Shalikashvili, 1992-1993 (later Chairman of the JCS);George A Joulwan, 1993-1997; Wesley K Clark, 1997-2000.

General Alfred M. Gruenther retired after 38 years in the U.S. Army on December 31, 1956, and on the following day he became President of the American Red Cross. His final military assignment was as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, a position which he occupied at SHAPE Headquarters in Paris from July 1953 until he retired.

He brought with him a warm enthusiasm for the Red Cross. Having seen the organization function effectively during World War II and in peacetime, he had been deeply impressed with the humanitarian principles underlying the world-wide programs of the organization. Early in his administration General Gruenther became convinced that one of his principle duties would be the telling of the Red Cross story. His strenuous schedule took him back and forth across the United States scores of times. On June 25, 1963, at Elkhart, Indiana, he filled his 748th speaking engagement as the American Red Cross President.

He was the official representative of the American Red Cross at the League of Red Cross Societies and was a member of the Executive Committee of the League, which has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. He served as vice chairman of the League and a member of the Standing Commission of the International Red Cross. General Gruenther's first major international Red Cross meeting was at the nineteenth International Red Cross Conference in New Delhi, India, in 1957. Since then, he has visited 31 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, including those of Canada, Japan, the Phillippines, Indonesia, Australia, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Poland, the U.S.S.R., and nearly all of the Western European societies. In February 1962, he went to Panama to participate in the Gray Lady training course conducted by the American Red Cross to help start the Gray Lady program in Panama and the five countries of Central America. He also visited the Red Cross societies of Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil. He devoted much time to the Red Cross Blood Program, which at that time supplied more than 45 percent of the more than 5 million pints of blood used in blood transfusions in the United States. He was always eager to explain to audiences the Red Cross program for the conversion of outdated blood into blood fractions, the research program for the preservation of whole blood, and the program for the classification of rare blood types. He credited Red Cross blood with saving the life of his son when he was seriously wounded in combat in Korea. Perhaps his greatest Red Cross interest was the development of the Red Cross youth program as a means of preparing young people for community and national volunteer leadership responsibilities. General Gruenther was decorated by the United States and 14 other governments and by nine Red Cross societies. He received honorary degrees from 32 American colleges and universities. General Gruenther reached the mandatory Red Cross retirement age of 65 early in March 1964, and he retired at the end of that month.

He died in Washington, D.C. on May 30, 1983 and was buried in Section 7 of Arlington National Cemetery.

His wife, Grace E. Gruenther (November 23, 1897-May 18, 1979), is buried with him.

    Supreme Allied Commander Europe

    1953-1956

    General Alfred M. Gruenther, USA

In July of 1953 the President of the United States appointed General Alfred Gruenther to become the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. General Gruenther had long experience in the Alliance, having begun with the early planning group and continued through the first two SACEURs. He had joined the organisation before SHAPE existed, and was tasked, as the director of the Advanced Planning Group at the Hotel Astoria in Paris, to organise a headquarters and NATP military structure. Upon its activation by General Eisenhower on 2 April 1951, Gen. Gruenther was the logical choice to be the first Chief of Staff of SHAPE.

He served as the chief of Staff for both General Eisenhower, an old World War II comrade and for General Ridgway, Ike’s successor. He had actually been Ike’s choice as his successor, but the President and NATO council had agreed upon Ridgway. Less well known than his two predecessors, Gruenther was highly talented and, working in conjunction with the first DSACEUR, Field Marshal Montgomery, did much to improve Allied Command Europe.

When appointed SACUER, General Gruenther was the youngest four star general in the US Army. He was known as an officer who could assimilate and organise masses of information, converting the whole into clear operational plans. His sense of informality inspired the SHAPE staff and was in great measure responsible for the harmony among SHAPE officers in carrying out their tasks.

He was famous for sending little notes, called “Grunnions,” that dealt with details to be looked into. He also occasionally “Gruetherized” the staff, which meant he queried someone intensely in order to refine something more clearly. He was also known to send “Gruenther-grams”, or short but detailed memos, to the staff to provide guidance.

He felt that NATO’s defensive concept was one of U.S. nuclear weapons that formed a ‘sword’ and a necessary conventional ‘shield’ that would make that nuclear retaliation one of last resort. Another member joined the Alliance in 1955 – Germany. General Gruenther strongly promoted the addition of German forces into the military structure as an important element of the ‘shield’.

He campaigned vigorously for German integration into NATO’s force structure against some significant opposition and reluctance by some of the allies. Gruenther succeeded and with the new German armed force integrated into Allied Command Europe, the conventional defence of the Alliance was significantly enhanced.

Some of General Gruenther’s other achievements as SACUER were: a new approach that improved basic Allied planning; improved infrastructure planning and programming; the initiation of a coordinated air defence system in NATO Europe; and the introduction of improved communications systems into the Alliance’s command and control environment.

General Gruenther had the same zeal as General Eisenhower in his desire to promote NATO and he continued a personal public information campaign throughout his tenure. In 1955, for example, Gruenther made numerous speeches outside the headquarters and spoke to hundreds of visitor groups. His message was always ‘Unity!’ His speaking style was careful but casual and he never used a prepared speech.

By December of 1955 General Gruenther had decided to retire. He announced his retirement in April 1956.

General Gruenther was a native of Nebraska who graduated fourth in his class at the U.S. Military Academy at West Pont in 1918. He served in numerous peacetime assignments through 1941. In August 1942 he was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff for the new Allied Force Headquarters in London, where his boss was General Eisenhower. Later he served as Chief of Staff of the 15 th Army Group in Italy. After the war, he served as Director of the Joint Staff of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Before assuming duties as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans for the US Army. It was from this position that he was sent to Paris as chief of the Advanced Planning Group in January 1951.

After SHAPE, General Gruenther went on to become the President of the American Red Cross.

George Macdonald - Oil and Utilities Entrepreneur; Head of the American Chapter of SMOM

    <PICTURES?>
Business, Pleasure Monday, Nov. 11, 1929

Last fortnight one of the innumerable roads to Rome (this one was the Saturnia of the Cosulich Line) took His Eminence Patrick Joseph Cardinal Hayes, third-ranking U. S. Cardinal, Archbishop of New York to His Holiness Pius XI. Ghostly was His Eminence's business. As Archbishop of Rome's largest diocese (1,273,291) he had some to report on its spiritual condition.

To the Vatican went Cardinal Hayes, to a private audience with the Pope. Then he visited his titular church, Santa Maria in Via, placed on the image of the Virgin of Sorrows a tiara "of imperial design," studded with precious gems, diamonds, rubies, pearls. The tiara was a gift from the Cardinal's parishioners.

In Cardinal Hayes' party were four priests and one layman—Papal Knight Commander of the Grand Cross Sir George MacDonald, noted Catholic charitarian. Manhattan financier. While Cardinal Hayes was in Rome, Sir George served as Papal Chamberlain at the Vatican. Then the party went to Naples to embark on the yacht lamara, chartered for a lengthy cruise by Papal Knight MacDonald. Manned by 50 sailors, 300-foot, 14-cabined, the lamara is the largest yacht in European waters. Once before, in 1927, had Sir George taken the Cardinal cruising, but that had been in the Caribbean. This time his yacht will skim the storied waters of the Mediterranean, carry them to Egypt, Palestine, Constantinople, return the Cardinal to Rome in time for the Pope's Golden Jubilee on Dec. 20.
    http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...738002,00.html

It should not be forgotten that distinguished Catholic Americans, several of whom were members of the SMOM, received titles of nobility from the Holy See as recently as the 1950's. Among the better known examples are the late Rose FitzGerald Kennedy, a Papal Countess and mother of President John F. Kennedy, and Bernardine Donohue, a Papal Countess created by Pius XII, whose husband Daniel J. Donohue is a Gentleman of His Holiness and member of the American Association of the SMHOM. In the 1920's one of the founders of the American Association, Nicholas Brady, received the title of Papal Duke while another, George Macdonald, sometime President of the Association, was created a Papal Marquess.
    http://www.chivalricorders.org/orders/smom/m-nbprf5.htm

The Association’s first president James J. Phelan and later president George Macdonald were instrumental in increasing the Association’s membership and in bringing increased revenues into the American organization.
    [...]
Using his inherent talent, drive, and devotion to the Association, Cardinal Spellman was able to enlist the aid of some of America’s elite, including: John J. Raskob, chairman of General Motors; John Farrell, then president of U.S. Steel; Joseph P. Grace of W.R. Grace & Co.; Joseph Kennedy, a Boston entrepreneur; George MacDonald of Pennsylvania; and John D. Ryan.

[Quote][/If one enters Fordham Law School, a large bronze wall plaque lists the benefactors whose generosity enabled the construction of the Lincoln Center campus of the Jesuit University of New York. Among them is George, Marquis MacDonald. If memory serves, he had begun as a contractor, became a spectacularly successful financier, and then a benefactor of the church. He had married a daughter of the infamous police inspector Thomas Byrnes, whose personal fortune came from sources best left unexamined. MacDonald became a Knight of Malta, a Knight Grand Cross of the Holy Sepulchre, a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, the holder of numberless honorary doctorates and, much to his pleasure, a papal marquis. He loved to have his picture taken in the uniform of one or another of these orders.quote]

WHO'S WHO ? ................... KNIGHTS OF MALTA KNOW
    [...]
An exception was made for the United States because of its rising political, economic and military power, and in 1927 a branch of SMOM was established on the East Coast. Most of the founding members were tycoons of industry and finance who would strongly oppose Roosevelt's New Deal [one, John J. Raskob, the chairman of the board of General Motors, even became involved in a plot to seize the White House].

They were soon joined by such titans as John Farrell, president of U.S. Steel; Joseph P. Grace, of W.R. Grace & Co.; Joseph Kennedy, a Boston entrepreneur and father of a future president of the United States; and George MacDonald of Pennsylvania, who made a fortune in oil and utilities.

MacDonald was typical of those who joined SMOM for the sheer fun of it. In recognition of generous contributions to the church, he was made a papal marquis as well as a grand master of the Knights, of Malta. MacDonald loved to dress up in the splashy Knights costume, with its ostrich-plumed hat, gold spurs and a uniform with gold epaulets, sashes and the medal with the Knights' eight-pointed Maltese cross

Many of the approximately 1,500 Americans who subsequently joined the knighthood also enjoyed the rituals of induction at the local cathedral and the ceremonies in honor of the order's patron, St. John. But for others, SMOM was more than pomp and circumstance-it was a source of money and power.

Rear Admiral Ellery W. Stone - Chief Commissioner o/t Allied Commission for Italy; US Ambassador to Italy; Vice-president of ITT
    <NO FACE PICTURES RETRIEVED>

IEEE History Center: Ellery W. Stone Abstract

    Ellery W. Stone Oral History

Ellery Stone's early fascination with electrical apparatus shaped his later career in the electronics communications field. Stone's youthful experiences with amateur radio and ships' wireless radio equipment prepared him for his Naval Communications Service activities during World War I. He licensed ship-to-shore operators and transmitted Naval signals from California. His postwar broadcasting experiences eventually led him to become President of the Federal Telegraph Company and then Vice-President of the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation.

Stone discusses his childhood love of electronics and some of his experiences during and shortly after World War I. He was associated with the Federal Telegraph Company in California in the 1910s and 1920s, working with Dr. Lee deForest at the time when he invented the vacuum tube amplifier. Federal in the 1920s became part of a several combinations of companies, eventually being acquired by ITT. At the time of the acquisition, he became an officer with ITT. A Naval Reserve officer, he served in both World Wars as an expert on communications. During World War II, he participated in the African and European campaigns. In the postwar period, he stayed with ITT was an executive and contributed to telecommunications efforts in Africa, Europe, and elsewhere. Stone was decorated by the governments of several nations.

Prince Valerio Borghese, nicknamed 'The Black Prince', was among the most
notorious fascists recruited by the United States. As the commander of a murderous
anti-partisan campaign under Mussolini during the Salo Republic, Borghese with
his Decima MAS (XMAS), a Special Forces corps of 4,000 men founded in 1941
and officially recognised by the Nazi High Command, had specialised in tracking
down and killing hundreds of Italian Communists. At the end of the war the partisans
captured Borghese and were about to hang him when on April 25, 1945 Admiral
Ellery Stone, US Proconsul in occupied Italy and a close friend to the Borghese
family, instructed OSS employee and later celebrated CIA agent James Angleton
to rescue Borghese. Angleton dressed Borghese in the uniform of a US officer
and escorted him to Rome where he had to stand trial for his war crimes. Due to
the protection of the United States, Borghese was declared 'not guilty' at last
resort.12 CIA agent Angleton received the Legion of Merit from the US Army
for his 'exceptionally meritorious' achievements and in subsequent years made
a career as chief of CIA counter-intelligence, becoming 'the key American figure
controlling all right wing and neo-fascist political and paramilitary groups in Italy
in the post-war period'.13 In a typical development of a Cold Warrior 'only the
enemy changed for Jim Angleton' after the defeat of Mussolini and Hitler, as his
biographer notes. 'Now the hammer and the sickle replaced the crooked cross.'14

Note: Admiral Stone served as Acting Chief Commissioner of the Allied Commission for Italy from November 10, 1943, to July 1944, then as Chief Commissioner to February 7, 1947.

Wolff and Dulles plotted the Anglo-American redeployment of fascist operatives after the war, among them Borghese. Indeed, Wolff declared, "Where the person of Borghese and his Decima Mas is concerned, I have spoken several times . . . with a representative of Mr. Dulles." In late 1944, Rome's black aristocracy asked the Allied military governor in Italy, Vice Adm. Ellery Stone, to intervene in favor of the "terrible boy," Junio Valerio. A friend of the Borghese family and lover of a Roman baroness, Stone needed little convincing. As the partisans closed in on Borghese in May 1945, Stone instructed Angleton to warn him, which the latter did personally. On May 19, the Americans formally arrested Borghese, thus saving him from scheduled execution by a partisan firing squad.

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta

Wherever one turns in investigating P2, Gladio, the "black aristocracy," international terrorism, or the Nazi International, one encounters the SMOM—the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta, known as "the Knights of St. John" or the "Knights of Malta."

They were omnipresent in the establishment of the financial and human infrastructure of modern international terrorism already during World War II, and immediately thereafter. SMOM member Baron Luigi Parilli, an industrialist with high-level connections into both Hitler's SS and SD in Italy, and to Mussolini's intelligence services, was the main liaison between SS Gen. Karl Wolff and Allen Dulles in Berne.SMOM bestowed one of its highest awards, Gran Croce Al Merito Con Placca, on U.S. Ambassador to Italy Ellery Stone, who had saved Borghese, and who became a postwar vice-president of the ITT corporation, which helped organize the Sept. 11, 1973 overthrow of Chilean President Salvador Allende and the installation of dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

According to British journalist Stuart Christie,

25 April 1945 [three days before the German forces capitulate in Italy] Admiral Ellery Stone, U.S. Proconsul in occupied Italy, instructs James Angleton to rescue Prince Valerio Borghese from the possibility of arrest by the Resistance Committees which had sentenced him to death for war crimes .......... Stone is a close friend of the Borghese family.10

Borghese was to be heard from again on the twenty-ninth anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. (See below.)

    - Truman's Vatiean envoy Myron C. Taylor received SMOM's Gran Croci Al Merito Con Placca May 23, 1945.

    - On June 12, 1945 Admiral Ellery W. Stone was awarded the Croci Al Merito Di Prima Classe Con Corona from the SMOM.

Peter S. Lynch - Manager o/t Fidelity Magellan Fund; Fidelity Mutual Fund Whiz; Director of Morrison Knudsen and W. R. Grace & Company; Wall Street Stock Investor; Advisory Committee AmeriCares

Peter Lynch (born January 19, 1944) is a Wall Street stock investor. He is currently a research consultant at Fidelity Investments. Lynch graduated from Boston College and earned a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

    Fidelity

Lynch was hired as an intern with Fidelity Investments in 1966 partly because he had been caddying for Fidelity's president (among others) at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton, Massachusetts. He initially covered the paper, chemical, and publishing industries, and when he returned after a two year Army stint he was hired permanently in 1969. This time Lynch was charged with following the textiles, metals, mining, and chemicals industries, eventually becoming Fidelity's director of research from 1974-1977. In 1977, Lynch was named head of the then obscure Magellan Fund which had $18 million in assets. By the time Lynch resigned as a fund manager in 1990, the fund had grown to more than $14 billion in assets with more than 1,000 individual stock positions. Lynch's achieved dollar successes in a range of stocks including (by order of profit achieved - source is Beating the Street): Fannie Mae, Ford, Philip Morris, MCI, Volvo, General Electric, General Public Utilities, Student Loan Marketing, Kemper, and Loews.

    Books

Peter Lynch has written (with co-author John Rothchild) three texts on investing, including One Up on Wall Street (ISBN 0671661035), Beating the Street (ISBN 0671759159), and Learn to Earn. The latter book was written for teenagers. In essence, One Up served as theory while Beating is application. One Up lays out Lynch’s investment technique including chapters devoted to stock classifications, the two-minute drill, famous numbers, and designing a portfolio. Most of Beating consists of an extensive stock by stock discussion of Lynch’s 1992 Barron's Magazine selections, essentially providing an illustration of the concepts previously discussed. As such, both books represent study material for investors of any knowledge level or ability.

Lynch also wrote a series of investment articles for Worth magazine that expand on many of the concepts and companies mentioned in the books.

    Investment terminology

Lynch coined some of the best known mantras of modern individual investing strategies.

His most famous investment principle is simply, "Invest in what you know," popularizing the economic concept of "local knowledge". This simple principle resonates well with average non-professional investors who don't have time to learn complicated quantitative stock measures or read lengthy financial reports. Since most people tend to become expert in certain fields, applying this basic "invest in what you know" principle helps individual investors find good undervalued stocks.

Lynch uses this principle as a starting point for investors. He has also often said that the individual investor is more capable of making money from stocks than a fund manager, because they are able to spot good investments in their day-to-day lives before Wall Street. Throughout his two classic investment primers, he has outlined many of the investments he found when not in his office - he found them when he was out with his family, driving around or making a purchase at the mall. Lynch believes the individual investor is able to do this, too.

He also coined the phrase "ten bagger" in a financial context. This refers to an investment which is worth ten times its original purchase price and comes from baseball where "bags" or "bases" that a runner reaches are the measure of the success of a play. A "two bagger" would be a double, so by extension, two home runs and a double would be a "ten bagger".

    Philanthropy

Though he continues to work part-time as vice chairman of Fidelity Management & Research Co., the investment adviser arm of Fidelity Investments, spending most of his time mentoring young analysts, Peter Lynch focuses a great deal of time on philanthropy. He said he views philanthropy as a form of investment. He said he prefers to give money to support ideas that he thinks can spread, such as First Night, the New Year's Eve festival that began in Boston in 1976 and has inspired similar events in more than 200 other communities, and City Year, a community service program founded in Boston in 1988 that now operates in 14 locations.

The Lynches give money primarily in five ways: as individuals, through the Lynch Foundation, through a Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, and through two charitable trusts.

The Lynch Foundation, which had $74 million in assets in 2003, supports education, religious organizations, cultural and historic organizations, and hospitals and medical research.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Lynch

Peter S. Lynch's approach to stock investment is simple: know what you own.

"If you can't explain it to a 12-year-old in three minutes or less - if you don't understand it - you've got a problem," explained Lynch, vice chairman of Fidelity Management & Research Company and advisory board member of Fidelity Funds, who delivered the Charles F. Dolan Lecture on April 17.

Carolyn and Peter Lynch receive the Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam Award from Tom Regan.
The second was the Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam Award which
is given annually to an individual or a group for exemplifying
the Jesuit ideal of living a faith that does justice. This year’s
recipients were Carolyn A. and Peter S. Lynch, for whom
the School of Education at Boston College is named. Father
Joseph M. O’Keefe, interim dean of that school, introduced
the award as honoring the Lynches not only for their many
philanthropic activities, but especially for their untiring and
effective promotion of the education of youth, particularly
    those of poor, inner-city origins.

    THE KNIGHTS OF BUSINESS

In a crop of corporate dramas, Knights of Malta are everywhere

When W.R. Grace & Co. Chief Executive J.P. Bolduc sensed a few months ago that his strained relations with Chairman J. Peter Grace were putting his job in jeopardy, he took his case to a rather unorthodox authority: John Cardinal O'Connor, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York. At Bolduc's request, the cardinal asked Grace to patch things up, hoping to avoid the scandals and the corporate upheaval that have since cost both men their jobs.

Grace rebuffed the advice, say sources close to the company; Grace, Bolduc, and the cardinal won't comment. But why did O'Connor even attempt to referee a boardroom blowup at W.R. Grace, a publicly held chemicals giant? Grace, Bolduc, and three other company directors--former Fidelity mutual fund whiz Peter Lynch, former Borden CEO Eugene Sullivan, and former University of Notre Dame administrator James Frick--all are Knights of Malta, an elite, secretive, Catholic lay order that counts O'Connor as its spiritual leader in the U.S. The knights trace their history back some 900 years, to a band of warrior-monks who tended to the injured during the Crusades.

A Wizard Caught in Two Storms

    By DIANA B. HENRIQUES
    Published: March 10, 1995

Nothing can cloud the legend of Peter S. Lynch, the mutual fund wizard. As the manager of the giant Fidelity Magellan Fund from 1977 until his retirement in 1990, Mr. Lynch racked up one of the best long-term track records in the fund industry.

But it has not been a good year for Peter S. Lynch, the corporate director. Mr. Lynch is a director of only two public corporations, Morrison Knudsen and W. R. Grace & Company. And since January, the boards of both companies have been plunged into controversy centering on the charismatic chairmen who asked Mr. Lynch to serve as a director.

At Morrison Knudsen, the invitation came in 1988 from his friend William J. Agee, who had just taken command. Last month, Mr. Agee was forced to resign in the wake of big corporate losses. Yesterday, the company named a new management team to try to regain its financial footing. [ Page D3. ]

At W. R. Grace, Mr. Lynch joined the board in 1989 at the request of its chairman, J. Peter Grace, another old friend and a fellow member of the Knights of Malta, a Roman Catholic charitable group.Last week, the company's popular president and chief executive, J. P. Bolduc, resigned abruptly, setting off protests among institutional investors who blamed Mr. Grace for his departure. And yesterday, the company was fielding questions about whether Mr. Grace's compensation package and his son's business transactions with the company had been fully disclosed to investors. [ Page D3. ]

Mr. Lynch was traveling yesterday and could not be reached for comment on how he was coping with the twin crises. "With respect to W. R. Grace, the board members have voted as a matter of policy not to comment," a spokeswoman for Mr. Lynch said. In the past, he has also declined to comment about his role in Mr. Agee's departure.

    VISIONARY INVESTMENT BANKER
    GEOFFREY T. BOISI, WG’71

IN 1978, ONLY SEVEN years after earning his Wharton MBA, Geoffrey Boisi became the youngest partner of Goldman, Sachs & Co. As Management Committee partner, the
young banker became responsible for the firm’s worldwide investment banking activities. He then became co-founder, chairman, and CEO of The Beacon Group, LLC, a private equity and advisory firm headquartered in New York City.
Boisi made a celebrated deal in 2000 when he sold Beacon for $500 million to Chase Manhattan Bank, which soon merged with J.P. Morgan & Co. Boisi served as vice chairman of investment banking for the new JP Morgan Chase, envisioning a world of giant business enterprises — “corporate city-states,” he called them — and reconfiguring the company as a combination investment and commercial bank that would serve them with a leaner, more productive staff.
In 2002 JP Morgan Chase suffered heavy losses in Enron, Global Crossings, and other
bad investments that preceded Boisi’s arrival. The one-time wunderkind then shocked Wall Street with a sudden early retirement amid a management shake-up by Chairman and CEO William Harrison.

A bold and blunt-spoken leader, Boisi has thrown himself into charitable pursuits with characteristic vigor. A Knight of Malta and devout Catholic, Boisi serves as trustee for the Papal Foundation and Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises. In addition, Boisi is a co-founder and chair of The National Mentoring Partnership and is a director of Communities in Schools.
Throughout his career, he has continued his service to Wharton. Boisi served as co-chair with the late Mickey Tarnopol, W’58 (see p. 65), vice chairman of the Investment Banking Division of Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc, on Wharton’s Campaign for
Sustained Leadership, helping the School surpass its original $350 million campaign goal to raise $445.7 million. He and Tarnopol were both honored with Wharton Dean’s
Medals in 2003. Boisi currently serves on Wharton’s Board of Overseers.
    http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/infodoc.../am07anniv.pdf

Boisi is an unlikely critic of the Church. He is a member of the exclusive Knights of Malta, a conservative Catholic fraternal organization, and a Steward of St. Peter, an honorific conferred on those who donate at least $1 million to the Papal Foundation. But he is also something of a bare-knuckle businessman, who earned his first notch on Wall Street as the youngest partner in Goldman Sachs history (he was 31) before founding Beacon Group, a boutique M&A outfit, in 1993. Seven years later he cashed out Beacon to Chase Manhattan for an estimated $500 million and stayed on to become J.P. Morgan Chase's vice chairman. A ruthless cost-cutter, Boisi fired 9,000 employees over two years starting in 2000; in 2002 he himself was forced out. Since then he has devoted much of his time to matters of faith, building the Boisi Center for Religion & American Public Life at Boston College.

Field Marshall Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis - Commander-in-Chief o/t forces i/t Middle East 1942; Commander-in-Chief of Italy 1943-1944; Supreme Allied Commander o/t Mediterranean 1944-1945

Field Marshal Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, 1st Viscount Alexander of Tunis, 1st Baron Rideau PC (Can) PC (UK) KG OM GCB GCMG CSI DSO MC LM DSM (10 December 1891 - 16 June 1969) was a British military commander and field marshal, notably during the Second World War as the commander of the 15th Army Group. He later served as the last British Governor General of Canada.

Earl Alexander of Tunis is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 14 March 1952 for the prominent military commander Field Marshal Harold Alexander, 1st Viscount Alexander of Tunis. He had already been created Viscount Alexander of Tunis, of Errigal in the County of Donegal, on 1 March 1946, and was made Baron Rideau, of Ottawa and of Castle Derg in the County of Tyrone, at the same time he was given the earldom. These titles are also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Alexander was the third son of James Alexander, 4th Earl of Caledon.

He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second and (as of 2007) present holder of the titles. He briefly served as a Lord-in-Waiting (government whip in the House of Lords) under Edward Heath from January to March 1974. However, he lost his seat in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999. As a descendant of the fourth Earl of Caledon Lord Alexander of Tunis is also in remainder to this peerage and its subsidiary titles. From 1980 to 1990 he was in fact heir presumptive to these titles, before the birth of the current Earl of Caledon's son and heir, Viscount Alexander.

    Background and family

The third son of the 4th Earl of Caledon and the former Lady Elizabeth Graham-Toler, a daughter of the 3rd Earl of Norbury, he was born in London and educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Alexander was the 11th batsman in the famous Fowler Match between Eton and Harrow in 1910.[2]

In 1931, Alexander married Lady Margaret Diana Bingham, GBE DStJ, younger daughter of George Bingham, 5th Earl of Lucan. The couple had two sons and two daughters (of which, one was an adopted daughter).

    Early career

He was commissioned into the Irish Guards in 1911. During the First World War, Alexander's battalion formed a part of the original British Expeditionary Force (BEF), in which he was a 22-year-old lieutenant and platoon commander.

Alexander became the youngest lieutenant-colonel in the British Army during the war, and when the Great War ended he was in temporary command of a brigade. He served on the Western Front and was wounded twice in four years of fighting. He received the Military Cross in 1915, the Distinguished Service Order in 1916, and the Legion of Honour, and by 1918 was an acting brigadier. Rudyard Kipling, who wrote a history of the Irish Guards in which his own son fought and was killed, noted that, "It is undeniable that Colonel Alexander had the gift of handling the men on the lines to which they most readily responded . . . his subordinates loved him, even when he fell upon them blisteringly for their shortcomings; and his men were all his own."

In 1919 - 1920 Alexander led the Baltic German Landeswehr in the Latvian War of Independence, commanding units loyal to the Republic of Latvia in the successful drive to eject the Bolsheviks from Latgale[3]. He later served in Turkey and Gibraltar before returning to England and the Staff College, Camberley and the Imperial Defence College. In 1937 he was promoted to major-general.

Alexander joined the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), as commander of the 1st Infantry Division, in France in 1939. He was instrumental in leading the retreat of the BEF to Dunkirk, and was the last man in his command to leave [4]. For the rest of 1940 and 1941 he held commands equivalent to corps and then army in mainland Britain, before being sent to Burma, commanding what was later to be the Fourteenth Army at the beginning of that campaign. In August 1942 Winston Churchill sent him, as Commander-in-Chief Middle East, and under him Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery as General Officer Commanding Eighth Army, to North Africa to replace General Claude Auchinleck who had held both positions. He presided over Montgomery's victory at the Second Battle of El Alamein. After the Anglo-American forces from Torch and the Eighth Army met in Tunisia in January 1943, he became deputy to Dwight Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean.

Alexander was very popular with both US and British officers, and was Eisenhower's preference for the ground command of D-Day, but Field Marshal Alan Brooke applied pressure to keep him in Italy, considering him unfit for the assignment. Alexander remained in Italy as commander of the 15th Army Group, with the US Fifth Army and British Eighth Army under his command.

Montgomery, who was both a long-time friend and subordinate of Alexander in Sicily and Italy, said of him, "Alexander....is not a strong commander...the higher art of war is quite beyond him."[citation needed] He advised his US counterparts, Mark Clark and George S. Patton, to ignore any orders from Alexander with which they did not agree.[citation needed]

In 1943 the Prime Minister,Winston Churchill, proposed to make the Irish aristocrat Alexander a Knight in the Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick. The Commonwealth Office advised against it and Alexander was made a Viscount in the Peerage of the United Kingdom instead.

His forces captured Rome in June 1944, thereby achieving one of the strategic goals of the Italian campaign. However, US Fifth Army forces at Anzio, under Clark's orders, failed to follow their original breakout plan that would have trapped the German forces escaping northwards. At the end of 1944 Alexander was promoted to field marshal, his promotion being backdated to the fall of Rome, on 4 June 1944, so that he would once again become senior to Montgomery, who had been made a field marshal earlier in the year, on 1 September 1944, after the end of the Battle of Normandy.

Alexander received the German surrender in Italy on 29 April 1945.

    Post-war

Sir Harold Alexander was created Viscount Alexander of Tunis, of Errigal in the County of Donegal, in 1946 for his leadership in North Africa and Italy. In December 1946 he was made a Knight of the Garter and was created Baron Rideau, of Ottawa and of Castle Derg in the County of Tyrone, and Earl Alexander of Tunis in 1952.

Prince Cyril Toumanoff - Russian-born Historian and Genealogist; Georgetown Professor

    <NO PICTURES>
Prince Cyril Toumanoff (1913 – 1997) was a Russian-born historian and genealogist of Georgian origin who mostly specialized in the history of medieval Armenia, Georgia and Iran.

He was born in Saint Petersburg of a Georgian father of the Armeno-Georgian Tumanishvili noble family[1], which had removed from Armenia to Georgia in the 15th century, and Russian mother, fleeing the Russian Revolution with his mother in 1918 and first residing in Paris. He emigrated to the United States in 1928. He earned a doctorate from Georgetown University in 1943 and accepted a position there, holding it until his retirement, as a professor emeritus of history, in 1970. A recognized authority on nobiliary and dynastic questions, Prince Toumanoff was also High Historical Consultant, and a professed knight, of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyril_Toumanoff
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Knights_of_Malta

Most historians consider the seventy-second Grand Master de facto to have been the Emperor Paul I of Russia, elected (though illegally) by a group of knights in 1799 while Ferdinand von Hompesch was still regnant Grand Master. This reckoning would make Giovanni Battista Tommasi, nominated in 1803, the seventy-third Grand Master. The events surrounding the election of Tsar Paul I are described in Cyril Toumanoff's L'Ordre de Malte et l'Empire de Russie and The Order of Malta Yesterday and Today. Following the brief grand magistracy of Giovanni Battista Tommasi, the subsequent administrative heads of the Order were Lieutenant Masters ("regents") until the Papal nomination as Grand Master of one of them, Giovanni Battista Ceschi a Santa Croce, in 1878. During the final years of Grand Master von Thun und Hohenstein, 1929-31, there was a Lieutenant Grand Master but the office of Grand Master was not vacant. Another lieutenancy followed from 1951 until 1962, when Angelo de Mojana di Cologna was elected Grand Master.

Nicholas Frederic Brady - Owner, Director, or Chairman of over 100 Corporations (!); Cofounder of the American Chapter of SMOM

A contemporary of J. P. Morgan, Joseph P. Grace, Edward L. Doheny, and
John D. Rockefeller, Jr., while being the close friend of New York Jesuits,
Thomas J. Delihant, S.J., and the future Francis Cardinal Spellman (“a
Jesuit of the short robe” and of the heart), Irish Catholic Nicholas F. Brady
was one of the five most powerful men of the early Twentieth Century.
One of the original twelve founding members of the American SMOM,
Brady rose to become owner, director, or chairman of over one hundred
corporations, including Chrysler Corporation, Brooklyn Subway, National
City Bank and Anaconda Copper. Privy to the sinking of Titanic, the
Jesuits’ Bolshevik Revolution, the Teapot Dome Scandal and the Stock
Market Crash of 1929, here he is receiving a Knights of Columbus award
from the “Military Vicar” and Archbishop of New York (with the Irish
Knight of Columbus Al Smith standing alongside) as a most faithful
Knight of Malta. Nicholas and his wife, Genevieve, called “the Duchess,”
were both members of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and gave
millions to the Jesuit Order including their three million dollar Long
Island mansion, “Inisfada,” and over one million dollars for the completion
of an elaborate Jesuit Novitiate in Wernersville, Pennsylvania in 1930.
A House of Bread: The Jesuits Celebrate 70 Years in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, Kathy M. Scogna, (Wernersville, Pennsylvania: Kathy M. Scogna, 2000) p. 17.
    Brady Estate - Monday, Apr. 07, 1930

As it must to all men, Death came last week to Nicholas Frederic Brady, chairman of New York Edison Co., director of 50 other companies (mostly utilities), 'greatest lay Catholic." Probably closer to and more respected by the Vatican than any other U. S. citizen, Nicholas Brady was first in the U. S. to receive the title Ordine Supremo del Christo, a Catholic honor far more distinguished than the Laetare Medal, awarded last year to Alfred Emanuel Smith, and this year (last week) to Frederick P. Kenkel, St. Louis editor (see p. 40). The Brady donations to the Vatican were many, large, discreet. A constant visitor to his last bedside was Patrick Cardinal Hayes, who conducted the funeral service.

But though his Church was dear to him Nicholas Frederic also carefully tended the business which his father left him and which made possible all the Brady donations to that Church. It was Anthony Nicholas Brady, father of Nicholas Frederic, who founded the Brady fortune, at one time among the greatest in the U. S. Anthony, born in Lille, France, went to Troy, N. Y., in 1857, worked first in the barber shop at Albany's old Delavan House. At 19 he started a tea store, soon opened branches. His first utility interest was acquiring stock in Albany Gas Light Co. A genius for consolidation, in comparatively short time he acquired control of Manhattan utility and traction companies. In 1887 he reorganized Manhattan's elevated railway and subway systems and held until his death a majority of the stock of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Co., now Brooklyn Manhattan Transit Co. He died in 1913 of indigestion, in London, while traveling with Restaurateur Louis Sherry. He left an estate estimated at $85,000,000.

To his sons, James Cox and Nicholas Frederic, came the job of managing the estate.* No one business did Anthony leave his heirs, but stock in half a hundred companies. In No. 70 Broadway are located the offices of the A. N. Brady Estate. Here instead of Mr. Brady an entire business organization devotes itself to doing with Mr. Brady's money what he himself might have done with it were he still alive. Sufficiently vast was Mr. Brady's fortune to make his estate, like Thomas Fortune Ryan's, a business in itself. Affiliated with so many mobile companies it cannot remain dormant.

Anthony's two sons managed the estate until the death in 1927 of James Cox Brady. Thereafter and until last week Nicholas Frederic managed it virtually alone. The size and importance of the Brady estate can perhaps best be apprehended by a cursory list of the companies of which Nicholas was director. Important among these was Consolidated Gas Co. of New York (Anthony, long interested in Con. Gas, was largely responsible for the installation there of his friend George Bruce Cortelyou as president) and Chrysler Corp. (When Walter P. Chrysler was founding his since famed company it was Brady estate money which practically financed his project.) Other companies of which Nicholas was a director were Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Chili Copper Co., Union Carbide and Carbon Corp., Mohawk-Hudson Power Corp. and dozens of power and light companies mostly in New York State and in Japan.

Anthony had two sons to whom he could leave the management of his estate. But last week when Nicholas Frederic died there was left only one male Brady, James Cox Jr., Nicholas himself had no children. James Cox Jr. was the only son of James Cox's five children. Facing him, last week and facing the husbands of his four sisters, and others who have worked in the A. N. Brady estate was the same job which Anthony left his two sons in 1913. Though only one male Brady is left the family estate is as large and exacting as it was when there were three. The death of Nicholas did not mean less activity at No. 70 Broadway.

    * Not without difficulties did the management of the Brady estate by the Brady sons progress. In 1923 the Brady sisters, Mrs Francis Patrick Garvan, wife of onetime Alien Property Custodian Garvan, famed Watchdog of U. S. Chemical industry, Mrs James C. Farrell, and Mrs. Carl Tuck sued the two sons charging mismanagement and converting of funds to their own instead of the estate's use. The suit was finally dismissed in 1924.

Nicholas and Genevieve had given over one million dollars to the Vatican by 1926. Nicholas was the personal friend of three Popes. He took a leading part in the organization and development of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York under the leadership of Cardinal Hayes. The following honors were conferred upon Nicholas: Knight of Malta (he founded the American chapter), Knight Commander of St. Gregory and Knight of St. Gregory, Knight of the Supreme Order of Christ, Papal Chamberlain and Papal Duke.

Nicholas and Genevieve were leading Catholic laypersons in the world. Genevieve received a Doctor of Laws from Georgetown University. Genevieve was awarded the following honors, a Laetaere Medal from the University of Notre Dame; Order of the Knight of the Crown from King Albert of Belgium; Cross of Malta; French Academy Award; and Papal Dutchess. Genevieve succeeded Mrs. Hoover as Chairperson of the National Girl Scouts of America and was Vice President of the Welfare Council of New York.

By 1930, the Brady’s had given more than 2 million dollars for the buildings and grounds of the Jesuit
Center in Wernersville, PA. Just two months before the Jesuit Center opened, Nicholas Frederic Brady passed away in his New York residence on March 27, 1930. A Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola on March 29, 1930. Nicholas is buried in a crypt beneath an altar in the main chapel at the Jesuit Novitiate at Wernersville, PA. His Eminence Patrick Cardinal Hayes issued a statement in the public press which reflects his personal attachment and keen sense of loss: “Church, country, and city may well lament the passing of Nicholas Frederic Brady, a lovable personality whose sublime Christian faith, unbounded charity, inspiring family life, notable citizenship, and sensitive fidelity to high ideals in business relations leave an impress long to be remembered and cherished by a host of friends who deeply mourn their personal loss.” Genevieve Garvan Brady died in 1938 and is buried in a vault next to her beloved - Nicholas.

“Mr. Brady was an old friend for whom I had great personal affection and esteem. In his death the
community sustains a loss of a man of enterprise, courage, great philanthropy and kindliness.”
Alfred E. Smith, New York Governor
“He lived in virtue. He lives in glory. He will live in memory.”

When the American Association of SMOM was created in 1927 the founding members included Patrick Cardinal Hayes, Edward L. Hearn, Nicholas F. Brady, Howard F. Carry, Patrick E. Crowley, James A. Farrell, James A. Fayne, Edward N. Hurley, James J. Phelan, Morgan J. O'Brien, John J. Raskob, and John D. Ryan.

Major Louis Mortimer Bloomfield - Lawyer; Canadian Zionist; Trained Haganah; Major Shareholder Permindex

Louis Mortimer Bloomfield, the son of Harry Bloomfield, was born in Canada, about 1910. A Zionist, Bloomfield joined the British military and served in Palestine as an Intelligence Officer under General Charles Orde Wingate. Bloomfield was involved in training the Jewish army, Haganah (1936-1939).

President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Office of Strategic Services in 1942. Bloomfield was recruited and given the rank of major. In 1947, the OSS evolved into the Central Intelligence Agency, and Bloomfield continued doing contract work for the new organization. He was a regular visitor to Israel and met the Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion on 4th May, 1949.

A successful lawyer he worked for years at the law firm of Phillips and Vineberg in Montreal. He was also a major stockholder of Permindex, a corporation based in Switzerland. He was also the author on several books on on international law including The British Hondurus Guatemala Dispute (1953) and Egypt, Israel and the Gulf of Aqaba (1957).

In Nomenclature of an Assassination Cabal William Torbitt claims that the assassination of John F. Kennedy was organized by Bloomfield and Permindex. Also involved included Defense Industrial Security Command, organized by J. Edgar Hoover and William Sullivan. Torbitt claims that Bloomfield was in control of the operation. DISC agents included Clay Shaw, Guy Banister, David Ferrie, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Jack Ruby.

According to the author Permindex was comprised of:

    (1) Solidarists an Eastern European exile organization.

    (2) American Council of Christian Churches led by Haroldson L. Hunt.

    (3) Free Cuba Committee headed by Carlos Prio.

    (4) The Syndicate headed by Clifford Jones, ex-lieutenant governor of Nevada. This group also included Bobby Baker, George Smathers, Roy Cohn, Fred Black and Lewis McWillie.

    (5) Security Division of NASA headed by Wernher von Braun.

Louis Mortimer Bloomfield died in 1984. A few years before his death donated 31 boxes of documents to the Library and Archives Canada. This included correspondence with some well-known politicians such as George H. W. Bush. The one condition Bloomfield placed on the donation was that public access to the papers would be restricted for 20 years after his death. However, when researcher, Maurice Phillips, attempted to gain access to these materials in 2004 he found that Bloomfield's widow, Justine Stern Bloomfield Cartier, was still refusing permission for them to be released into the public domain.

Louis Mortimer Bloomfield Ardent Canadian Zionist who helped train the Jewish army in the late 1930’s. Met numerous times with David Ben Gurion. Member of the OSS, CIA, FBI Division Five, and president of the shadowy Permindex. Suspected of being involved in the assassination of JFK and the attempted assassinations on Charles de Gaulle. Member of the Order of the British Empire. Said to be gay, just like his good friend J. Edgar Hoover. Good friend of the Bronfmans (1001 Club).
    http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/so...1001club01.htm

The public embrace of leading international mobsters by political and religious leaders in Israel was only that, a public display of a long-term relationship dating from the origins of the Israeli state itself. Israel's creation following World War II depended upon the help of British intelligence's Special Operations Executive (SOE) under Col. William Stephenson.

Stephenson incorporated these mobsters into the SOE's network, on the original pretext that they would be useful in anti-Nazi activities in the United States and Italy. Stephenson's top aide in the project was Major Louis Mortimer Bloomfield, who, although a Canadian subject, became the principal recruiter for the FBI's Division 5 counterintelligence section. Bloomfield, of the elite Order of Malta (Hospitallers), until his death in 1984. It was precisely this network that was utilized for the post-war creation of Israel. Exemplary of the network was the Sonneborn Institute. The express purpose of the Institute was to provide the Haganah, and later, the Irgun, with weapons and money. The leading personnel of the Institute included :

Henry Morgenthau, Jr. Former Secretary of the Treasury. He was coordinating Sonneborn fundraising and illegal money-transfer. Teddy Kollek. Former Haganah chief in New York. Later, he became the mayor of Jerusalem. Major Louis Mortimer Bloomfield. He supervised the organized crime networks, he also served for SOE's Division 5 of the FBI. Adolf Schwimmer. He functioned as on-the ground smuggling coordinator. Later, he founded Israeli Aircraft Industries, a major weapons conduit for Israel to this day. He was also a business partner of Shaul Eisenberg, the main coordinator of Israeli gun-running activity today.
    http://windowintopalestine.blogspot....adls-anti.html

I might add it has recently been brought to my attention that Major Louis Mortimer Bloomfield, a personal friend of SMOM Clay Shaw and co-conspirator in the JFK assassination, was also a Knight of Malta according to ex-MI6 officer John Coleman. Thus, Mr. Piper's linking Bloomfield with Permindex and also the Masonic Jewish Labor Zionist government of Israel was correct. But never would Coadjutor Piper name Bloomfield as being a Papal SMOM, for this would further prove the Jesuit Order's control of Labor Zionism now wickedly ruling the Lord's beloved Hebrew/Jewish/Israelitic people in Israel, that race holding exclusive rights to the land as per Genesis 15.

    Sincerely in Faith,

    Brother Eric

Another strange face we see attaching itself to the Holy
Christian Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and I use the word
stranger as it is used in the original Hebrew of the Old Testa-

William J. Flynn - CEO & Chairman o/t Board for the Mutual of America Insurance Co.; President o/t American Association o/t SMOM

New head of Knights of Malta works to change order's image

    By DICK RYAN,
Special to the National Catholic Reporter

William J. Flynn is no stranger to pomp and circumstance.

Last year the Irish-American business leader led the St. Patrick's Day parade up Manhattan's Fifth Avenue as grand marshal.

Since January Flynn has headed another group known for its ceremonial flourish -- the American Association of the Order of Malta. But that's an image he wants to change.

Flynn, who succeeds J. Peter Grace as president of the Knights of Malta, retired in 1994 as chief executive officer of the Mutual of America Life Insurance Co. and continues as its board chairman.

To many American Catholics, the Knights of Malta are considered an elitist club, taken with its tradition. Officially called the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, the order dates to 1070, making it the oldest religious order of chivalry in Christendom. A sovereign entity, subject of international law, the order began as a hospice infirmary for pilgrims in Jerusalem. Forced from the Holy Land by Muslims, the knights moved to Cyprus in 1291. Nineteen years later, they acquired the Aegean Island of Rhodes, occupied it for 200 years and became an international naval power during the Crusades.

No wonder, said Flynn, that "the public perception often seems to be that the Knights of Malta are too caught up with ritual and paraphernalia."

"Even a few of our own members seem to have the misconception that membership is really a reward for achievement in the business or professional world, or for generosity to the Catholic church and charities," Flynn said recently in his office on Park Avenue. "And that perception has to change.

"The fact of the matter is that service of the poor and protection of the faith have been two basic foundations of the knights from the very beginning. And there can be no other focus or direction and no more crucial emphasis, especially today."

Flynn has never been one to do things halfway. A few years ago, a couple of ardent Irishmen scolded him for lack of attention to violence in Northern Ireland. He became a major player in peace talks. As chairman of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, he commutes back and forth to Ireland almost as frequently as to his Garden City, N.Y., home.

"In all the positions I've held, in business and with different boards," Flynn said, "the only measurement of success I've ever used has been the effort and ability to really make a difference."

In his new position, Flynn wants to build the knights' membership of 1,800 by enlisting blacks and more women -- and people who are not necessarily business leaders, people who are known for service to the poor. "People are going to know the Knights of Malta for what we give and what we offer," he said.

If there is a black knight, Flynn hasn't met him. Women, known as Dames of Malta, are only 5 percent of the membership. Still, joining the knights is unlikely to become a routine affair. Membership is by invitation. Annual dues are $1,000, and bylaws list long-standing membership requirements. Candidates must be committed to church teaching, for example, and be sincerely interested in growing spiritually while helping the poor.

Flynn has two other goals: revising the order's mission statement by adding a specific focus on respect for life, and working more closely with American bishops.

In June, Flynn invited Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston to speak to the board about his role as bishops' committee chairman for pro-life issues. With the board's unanimous approval, Flynn committed a $250,000 grant to the cardinal.

Flynn also wants to restructure the board, having 24 members rotate by electing eight new members each year. Presently board members serve indefinitely.

The grand master of the knights, overseeing the worldwide organization, is based in Rome. In the United States, besides the association that Flynn heads, two smaller independent groups have formed: a Western Association based in San Francisco and a Federal Association based in Washington.

Q&A: William Flynn; Guiding the Knights of Malta in Charity

THE Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta traces its origins to the time of the Crusades. This Roman Catholic charitable organization is currently dedicated to the relief of poverty and sickness around the world.

William Flynn of Garden City has been the president of the American association of the order for two years. He is the former chief executive officer and present chairman of the board for the Mutual of America Insurance Company in Manhattan.

In the past, he has served as chairman for the Advisory Committee to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, the Ireland Chamber of Commerce and the New York Foundling Hospital, among others. He is a member of the board of the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity and the Ireland-America Economic Advisory Board and many other organizations.

He also played a part in the recent peace talks in Northern Ireland. The chairman of the National Committee on Foreign Policy, Mr. Flynn was instrumental in bringing the Sinn Fein leader Jerry Adams to the United States.

    [...]

    Q. How does the American branch of the order fit into the international organization?

    A. I'm the president of the American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta. With 1,800 members, we're the largest group within the Order of Malta in the world. There are two other orders in the United States. The Federal operates out of Washington and the Western is based in San Francisco. They're smaller, but they're very effective.

I think there is a feeling that the American association hasn't realized its full potential. There's much more that can be done, and we're striving to perfect our ability to be more effective in taking on our mission, which is to help the sick and the poor and to defend the faith.

Knights of Malta rift widens: opposition to Flynn growing. (American Assn. of the Knights of Malta membership want resignation of Pres. William Flynn)(Brief Article)

WASHINGTON -- The rift between the leadership of the American Association of the Knights of Malta and its membership, which first came to light in November, is widening.

Twenty-one of the order's 28 area chairmen have called for the resignation of the New York-based association's president, William Flynn, his board and administration, exacerbating a dispute that was outlined in earlier correspondence obtained by NCR (see NCR Nov. 14, 1997).

While Flynn's supporters include the knights' conventual chaplain, New York Cardinal John O'Connor, and the knights' grand master, Andrew Bertie in Rome, the 21 area chairmen represent 85 percent of the American Association's 1,000-plus membership.

Knights' battle of letters polite, bruising: board members take on highflying president. (William J. Flynn, president of the Knights of Malta)(Cover Story)
From: National Catholic Reporter | Date: 11/14/1997 | Author: Jones, Arthur

People associated with the wealthy, powerful Catholic charity organization, the Knights of Malta, are disgruntled about Flynn's priorities for the Knights and the way he administers its funds. The issues, personalities and what is being done to end the problems, are discussed.

NEW YORK -- Leaders of the prestigious and usually sedate Catholic organization, the Knights of Malta, have been engaged in a polite but bruising, three-month internal fight over the direction of the organization.

The struggle, outlined in correspondence obtained by NCR, provides a rare look behind the formidable facade of the organization, formally known as the American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Differences have pitted long-term association members, including some Board of Councilors members, against William J. Flynn, president since January 1996. Two members called for his resignation.

Tensions within the 1,200-member organization, known for its high number of Catholic business, political and legal notables, were reflected in an exchange prior to the Nov. 4 New York City semiannual board meeting.

In October Flynn, board chairman of Mutual of America, urged William E. Simon, former U.S. Treasury secretary and self-made multimillionaire, to resign from the board. Simon wrote back, "I will be pleased to resign -- right after you do."

    [...]

Remaining apolitical was scarcely the American Association's leadership style in the 1980s, when J. Peter Grace was president and had eight knights on the $4.9 billion W.R. Grace board. Grace was linked to many CIA-connected activities. One group of knights had direct or indirect links to the Central Intelligence Agency (NCR, Oct. 14, 1983) and CIA Director William J. Casey was himself a knight.

The approximately 15,000 worldwide members of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta was founded in the 12th century to protect pilgrims to Jerusalem. Its knights fought in the crusades, acquired land and wealth, and went through a series of historical successes and reversals down to the present day. Today the organization is diplomatically recognized as an independent entity, a "nation" of sorts, by some 40 countries, not including the United States.

Joseph P. Grace - President of WR Grace & Co

    W. R. Grace and Company (NYSE: GRA) is a Columbia, Maryland, United States based chemical conglomerate.

The company has two main divisions, Davison Chemicals and Performance Chemicals. The Davison unit makes chemical catalysts, refining catalysts, and silica-based products that let other companies make products from refined crude oil. Its Performance Chemicals unit makes cement and concrete additives, fireproofing chemicals, and packaging sealants. The customers include chemicals companies, construction firms, and oil refiners.[1]

Their self-description is "a premier specialty chemicals and materials company." Grace has more than 6,400 employees in nearly 40 countries, and annual sales of more than $2.5 billion.[1] The company's stock, with ticker symbol "GRA," listed in 1953, trades on the New York Stock Exchange.[2]

    History

W.R. Grace and Company was founded in 1854 in Peru by William Russell Grace (1832-1904), who left Ireland due to the Potato Famine. He went first to Peru to work as a ship's chandler to the merchantmen harvesting guano (fertilizer and gunpowder ingredient due to its high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen) and, moving the company to New York City in 1865 working in fertilizer and machinery, the company was formally chartered in 1872, and incorporated in 1899.[3] Joseph P. Grace Sr. became company president in 1907. During the Second World War, in 1945, J. Peter Grace Jr., W.R. Grace's grandson, took control of the company. The company began to diversify.

In 1954, the company bought Davison Chemical Company (founded by William T. Davison as Davison, Kettlewell & Company in 1832), and the Dewey & Almy Chemical Company (founded in 1919 by Bradley Dewey and Charles Almy).

At one time, Grace's main business interest was in the shipping business. To get its products from Peru to North America and Europe, including guano and sugar, and noticing the need for other goods to be traded, William Grace founded a shipping division.[3]

The company bought a 53% stake in Miller Brewing in 1966, for $36 million, Lorraine Mulberger sold the stake for religious reasons.[4] It sold the Miller stake in 1969 to Philip Morris for $130 million, topping a deal with PepsiCo for $120 million.[5][6][7]

In 1987, with a can sealing plant in Shanghai, Grace became the first wholly foreign-owned company to do business in The People's Republic of China.

Grace's corporate headquarters are located in Columbia, Maryland. Although W. R. Grace commissioned the Grace Building in New York City, built in 1971, the company no longer has any offices occupying it.

In 1998 W.R Grace was sued by the SEC.

Michele "The Shark" Sindona - Banker; Money Launderer; Financial Whiz; Member of P2

    Licio Gelli - Roberto Calvi
    Michele Sindona - Paul Marcincus

Michele Sindona (May 8, 1920 - March 22, 1986) was an Italian banker and convicted felon. Known in banking circles as "The Shark", Sindona was a member of Propaganda Due (#0501)[1], an Italian lodge of Masons, and had clear connections to the Mafia. He was poisoned in prison while serving a life sentence for the murder of lawyer Giorgio Ambrosoli.

    Biography

    Early years

Born at Patti, Sicily, of poor parents, Michele Sindona was educated by the Jesuits, showing very early in his life an unusual aptitude for mathematics and economics. He graduated with a law degree from Messina University in 1942 then after he moved from Sicily to the north where he worked as a tax lawyer and an accountant for companies such as Società Generale Immobiliare and Snia Viscosa, but immediately turned away from Law and began working in smuggling operations with the Mafia. He soon moved to Milan and his skill and dexterity in transferring money to avoid taxation soon became known to the Mafia bosses. By 1957 he had become closely associated with the Gambino family and was chosen to manage their profits from heroin sales.

    Becoming an international banker

Within a year of the Gambino family choosing him to manage their heroin profits, Sindona had bought his first bank. He also became associated with Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini and became firm friends because the future Pope found his financial skill indispensable. By the time Montini became Pope, Sindona had acquired, through his holding company Fasco, many more Italian banks and his progress continued right up to the beginning of his association with the Vatican Bank in 1968. Huge amounts of money moved from Sindona's banks through the Vatican to Swiss banks, and began speculating against major currencies on a large scale.

In 1972, Sindona purchased a controlling interest in Long Island's Franklin National Bank. He was hailed as "the saviour of the lira" and was named "Man of the Year" in January 1974 by American Ambassador to Italy, John Volpe.

    Il crack Sindona

In April 1974 a sudden stock market crash led to what is known as Il Crack Sindona. The Franklin Bank's profit fell by as much as 98% compared to the previous year, and Sindona suffered a 40 million dollar loss, with the result that Sindona began losing most of the banks he had acquired over the previous seventeen years. On October 8, 1974, the bank was declared insolvent due to mismanagement and fraud, involving losses in foreign currency speculation and poor loan policies.[2]

According to the Mafia turncoat (pentito) Francesco Marino Mannoia, Sindona laundered the proceeds of heroin trafficking for the Bontade-Spatola-Inzerillo-Gambino network. The mafiosi were determined to get their money back and would play an important role in Sindona's attempt to save his banks.

    Arrest, trial and death

On July 11, 1979, Giorgio Ambrosoli, the lawyer commissioned liquidator of Sindona's banks, was murdered in Milan. Milanese Councilman Antonio Amati turned the case over to a young judge, Giuliano Turone. It was discovered that Michele Sindona ordered Ambrosoli's murder (which was carried out by an American assassin). At the same time the Mafia killed police superintendent Boris Giuliano in Palermo who was investigating the Mafia’s heroin trafficking and had contacted Ambrosoli just two weeks before to compare investigations.

While under indictment in the US, Sindona staged a bogus kidnapping in August 1979 to conceal a mysterious 11-week trip to Sicily before his scheduled fraud trial. The brother-in-law of Mafia boss Stefano Bontade, Giacomo Vitale, was one of the persons who organised Sindona’s travel. The real purpose of the kidnapping was to issue sparsely disguised blackmail notes to Sindona’s past political allies – among them Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti – to engineer the rescue of his banks and recuperate Cosa Nostra’s money.

He threatened Enrico Cuccia, president of the Mediobanca who was opposed to the reorganization/rescue plan. In Palermo, Sindona went to the house of Joseph Miceli Crimi, an American-Italian doctor and freemason. Dr. Crimi later admitted to the judges that he went to Arezzo to talk with Licio Gelli about Sindona's situation. Licio Gelli then started to interest two judges, Giuliano Turone and Gherardo Colombo.

The people around Sindona, trying to save him, all led to Licio Gelli, headmaster of P2: Rodolfo Guzzi, Sindona's lawyer; Pier Sandro Magnoni, his brother-in-law; Philip Guarino and Paul Rao, two Freemasons who met Gelli a couple of hours after being received by Giulio Andreotti. Hereafter, the Milan judges ordered a search of all of Gelli's addresses.

The plot failed and after his "release" from the kidnappers Sindona surrendered to the FBI. Convicted in 1980 in the United States on 65 counts including fraud, perjury, false bank statements and misappropriation of bank funds. While serving in US Federal Prison the Italian government applied for extradition of Sindona back to Italy to stand trial for murder. "The Shark" was sentenced to 25 years in Italian prison on March 27, 1984. On March 18, 1986, he was poisoned with cyanide in his coffee, in his cell in a prison of Voghera while serving a life sentence for the murder of Giorgio Ambrosoli.

Michele “The Shark” Sindona, who you’d think had stepped out of a Puzo novel or Scorsese flick. Mr. Mafia Personified was yet another friend of Gelli and Calvi. Aside from all three being in Knights of Malta, they were all involved in P2. A lot of researchers don’t think it’s a coincidence that there was a cross-over at the top levels of both organizations, though disagree if it is cooperation or infiltration.

In light of the July 1996 issue of this newsletter ("The Smiling Pope"), it is noteworthy that Ms. Honegger goes into the Propaganda Due, or P-2, connection. You'll recall that P-2 is a secret, illegal Masonic lodge founded in Italy by Licio Gelli in 1966. Honegger points to Alexander Haig, later to become the Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan, as having been made an "honorary" (non-Italian) member of P-2 prior to 1980. Honegger further states that Licio Gelli, finance wizard Michele Sindona, Alexander Haig, and CIA Director William Casey "were also reportedly members of the Vatican's military order, the Knights of Malta, whose initiates must take an oath of allegiance to the Pope." Furthermore, P-2 is linked to the Mafia, which also seems to have played a part in the October Surprise plot; writes Honegger: "A number of press reports, taken together, suggest that there may have been a P-2 and Gambino Mafia connection to the release of the fifty-two American hostages from the U.S. embassy in Tehran."
