The sun is always shining.

One part of the Earth is dark while another is light.
According to Genesis 1 there was no sun when this light (probably twilight, an "aura", or electromagnetic field) was called "day", the earth being older then the sun was influenced by this "light".

Darkness already existed (Genesis 1:2) and was later called Night.
