Jan.5th – “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugar Hill Gang becomes the 1st first hip-hop record to enter Billboard’s Top 40 Chart on this day in 1980.
The Sugar Hill Gang consisted of Wonder Mike , Master Gee and Big Bank Hank ,whose verses on the legendary track were reportedly written by Grandmaster Caz , whom Hank used to manage.

Dec.6th – DJ Quik released his debut album “Quik Is The Name” on Profile Records , on this day in 1991.
The extremely talented Compton , California producer and artist was the most expensive signee on the independent Profile Records , reportedly netting a six figure deal.
“Quik Is The Name” would spawn the chart-climber “Born And Raised In Compton” and the single title track as well as the hit “Tonite”.
DJ Quik would go on to be one of the most successful producers in music history.

Jan.10th - Smiff-N-Wessun release their debut album "Dah Shinin'" on Wreck Records on this day in 1995.
The album was a landmark set in the "backpacker hip-hop movement" and was produced by Da Beatminerz of whose members would include DJ Evil Dee of Black Moon , Mr. Walt , Rich Blak and Baby Paul.
The album would see the arrival of the now legendary Boot Camp Clik, which would consist of Smif-N-Wessun and Black Moon as well as Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C..
Singles from the album would include "Wontime" , "Let's Git It On" , "Sound Bwoy Bureill" and the classic "Buck Town"

Jan.12th – Raekwon of The Wu-Tang Clan was born Corey Woods in Brooklyn , New York , on this day in 1970.
Raekwon also known as Chef Reakwon , Raekwon The Chef , Shallah Raekwon and Lex Diamonds joined the 9 man Wu-Tang Clan in 1992.
His lyrical impact on The Wu could be felt all over their 1999 multi-platinum debut album “Enter The Wu-Tang” – 36 Chambers , especially on their smash-hit “C.R.E.A.M.”
Raekwon has appeared on all 5 of The Wu-Tang Clan albums since , with 2007’s “8 Diagrams” being the latest.
In 1994 Raekwon signed a solo deal with Loud Records while all the while remaining a member of the red hot Wu-Tang Clan and released his debut solo single “Heaven & Hell” which was also featured in the in Miramax film “Fresh” , released the same year.
The following year Raekown released his classic debut album “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” , an album that many argue was the best of all solo Wu projects. Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah appeared on all the tracks for “Linx” and received a co-star like credit for the set. Other guests on the album included Nas and Blue Raspberry as well as all of the other Wu-Tang members. Hit singles off the album included “Ice Cream” , “Can It All Be So Simple” – The Remix , “Rainy Dayz” and the cult classic “Incarcerated Scarfaces”. The album like all other solo Wu projects was produced by Wu founder The RZA.
Raekwon has released 4 more solo albums since ; 1999’s “Immobilarity” , 2003’s “The Lex Diamonds Story” , 2009’s “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..Pt.II and 2011’s “Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang”.
Over the years Raekwon has collaborated with the likes of the late Big Pun , Fat Joe , Jadakiss , Nas , Allure , Tiffany Villareal , Lyfe Jennings and Joy Denalane to name a few.
Raekown has also appeared in the films “Black And White” , “Coalition” , “Hardrock” and the television mini-series “Kingpin”.

Jan.14th – LL Cool J was born James Todd Smith in Bay Shore, New York on this day in 1968.
As a child LL Cool J(an acronym for Ladies Love Cool James) began rapping and making beats at 10 years of age. His grandmother bought him d.j. equipment to keep him from riding motorcycles and participating in other dangerous stunts.
Influenced by Kurtis Blow and Run-DMC , LL developed his own rapping style reminiscent of T. La Rock with the long words and extensive vocabulary in his rhymes.
LL Cool J would become the first signed artist to the then brand new Def Jam Records started by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons. His classic debut single “I Need A Beat” would be Def Jam’s first catalogued release.
The track ushered in a new era of rap music with its stripped down production and wordy rhyme play which harked back to the early stripped down raw hip-hop of ols school NYC black parties.
During this time LL even wrote the lyrics to the Run-DMC classic track “Can You Rock It Like This” from their 1985 sophomore album “King Of Rock”.
LL’s chiselled physique and good looks made him hip-hop’s 1st sex symbol. LL Cool J would have a female fan base and support that would last him for the ages.
This new found fame would now set the stage for his classic platinum-selling debut album “Radio”. “Radio” was released in 1985 and spawned the hits “Rock The Bells”, “I Can Give You More” , “You’ll Rock” , “I Need A Beat” and “I Can’t Live Without My Radio” , which he also performed in a film stealing scene in the 1985 Russell Simmons semi-biopic “Krush Groove”.
LL’s new found fame threatened to eclipse that of the then red hot Fat Boys , Whodini and even his heroes Run-DMC. LL’s aggressive and ferocious rhyme style made him an instant favourite as a battle rapper. His lyrical wars over the years with the likes of Ice-T , Canibus , Wyclef Jean and especially of those with the legendary Kool Moe Dee were classic.
LL’s sophomore set “Bigger And Deffer” was released in 1987 and went platinum as well. “Bigger And Deffer” produced the hit singles “I’m Bad” , “Go Cut Creator Go” and rap music’s first commercially successful ballad “I Need Love”. “Bigger And Deffer” also contained the cult favourite album cuts “Get Down” , “Kanday” and “Bristol Hotel”.
LL Cool J has released 10 more albums since , most notably 1989’s “Walking With A Panther” , 1990’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” , 1997’s “Phenomenon” and 2000’s “G.O.A.T.”(an acronym for Greatest Of All Time).
LL’s last album was 2008’s “Exit 13”.
His discography of hit singles spans over 25 years with classics like “The Boomin’ System” , “Going Back To Cali” , “Doin’ It” , “To Da Break Of Dawn” , “Big Ole Butt” , “Imagine That” , “Loungin” , “Jinglin’ Baby” , “Mama Said Knock You Out” , “Headsprung” , “Pink Cookies In A Plastic Bag Getting Crushed By Buildings” , “Hey Lover” , “Around The Way Girl” and “I Shot Ya” to name a few.
Over the years Uncle L as he is sometimes known has collaborated with the likes of Boyz II Men , Foxy Brown , Canibus , Jamie Foxx , Ne-Yo , Jennifer Lopez , Mary J. Blige , Total , Lyfe Jennings , Method Man , DMX , Keith Murray and the late Notorious B.I.G.
LL Cool J’s film career has been almost as prolific as his music having appeared in countless films such as “S.W.A.T.” , “Rollerball” , “Wildcats’ , “Deliver Us From Eva” , “Kingdom Come” , “Charlie’s Angels” and “Any Given Sunday” just to name a few.
LL has also appeared on television’s “Oz” , “30 Rock” and “All That”.
From 1995 to 1999 , LL Cool J starred as retired football player Marion Hill on the NBC sitcom “In The House” which later switched over to the UPN network. “In The House” was a spin-off from NBC’s “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air”.
LL Cool J currently stars as Special Agent Sam Hanna on CBS’s “NCIS : Los Angeles”.
LL Cool J has won Grammy Awards , MTV Video Music Awards and NAACP Image Awards as well as Billboard, Soul Train and New York Music Awards.
In 2007 , LL was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall Of Fame.
LL Cool J ha started 2 record labels P.O.G. (Power Of God) Records and Rock The Bells Records which was also the name of the music production company he set up as well.
LL launched his own clothing line called Tood Smith and in the 1990’s was instrumental in helping get FUBU and TROOP off the ground.
LL Cool J published his memoirs in 1998 called “I Make My Own Rules”. He also wrote a children’s book that published in 2002 called “And The Winner Is” as well as a fitness book with his personal trainer Dave Honig called “The Platinum Workout” in 2006. He published his 4th book “LL Cool J”(Hip-Hop Star) co-written by Dustin Shekell with a foreword written by Yours Truly Chuck D.
LL Cool J has had one of the longest and most successful careers in hip-hop history and is truly regarded by many as The Greatest Of All Time.

February 1st – Big Boi of Outkast was born Antwan Andre Patton in Savannah, Georgia, on this day in 1975.
Big Boi studied music at Atlanta’s Tri-Cities High School, a Visual And Performing Arts Magnet School where he met Andre Benjamin who later formed Outkast with the Savannah native.
Benjamin would use the stage name Dre and then later Andre 3000.
Outkast signed a record deal with LaFace Records and released their classic platinum selling debut album “Southernplayalisticadillacmusik” in 1994. Outkast’s futuristic sci-fi funk, heavily influenced by their southern upbringing became an instant fan favorite and placed in a musical category all by itself.
Their double-platinum selling sophomore set “Atliens” released in 1996 was testimony to this, producing unique sounding hit singles like “Elevators (Me & You)” and the title track.
Their third album, 1998’s “Aquemini”, whose title came from the duo’s zodiac signs of Gemini and Aquarius, received 5 mics in The Source Magazine, the magazine’s highest critic’s rating possible.
2000’s “Stankonia” album took creative leaps to yet another level with an extremely versatile collection of songs. With hit songs that sounded like nothing on the charts and like nothing ever heard before in hip-hop.
“Ms. Jackson”, with its hypnotic church organ went to the top of the charts. “B.O.B.” had a break neck pace never heard before in rap music and the cool funk of “So Fresh, So Clean” was reminiscent of 1980’s Minneapolis band The Time.
During this time the duo also opened a recording studio called Stankonia in Atlanta where they would record most of their future work as well as renting out the double studio facility. Their clients have included Sevendust, Goodie Mob and Lil' Jon & The East Side Boyz to name a few.
Outkast would release a special album project in 2003. The duo would release a double album made up of two single albums which would both be almost like unofficial solo albums by both members.
Andre’s would be entitled “The Love Below” and contain the new wave-ish smash hit “Hey Ya.”
Big Boi’s collection would be called “Speakerboxxx” and produce the straight ahead cool funk smash “The Way You Move” (featuring Sleepy Brown), an Earth, Wind And Fire cover.
Outkast would then star in the 1996 Universal Pictures musical fantasy “Idlewood” and released the extremely underrated and musically diverse accompanying soundtrack.
The two decided to take a hiatus from Outkast with Andre pursuing an acting career and Big Boi continuing to produce and release music.
In 2010, Big Boi released his official solo debut album called “Sir Luscious Left Foot - The Son Of Chico Dusty” on Def Jam Records. The album spawned the hit “Shutterbug” (featuring Cutty) as well as guest appearances by George Clinton, Yelawolf, Janelle Monae and Gucci Mane.
Big Boi will be releasing another solo album in 2012 and has told This Day In Hip-Hop And Rap History that a new Outkast album is forthcoming sometime in the near future and that he was also producing tracks for a solo Andre 3000 album.

February 6th – Hip-Hop photographer Joe Conzo Jr. was born in The Bronx, New York, on this day in 1963.
Conzo, who studied photography from a young age and eventually at The School Of Visual Arts in New York City, grew up and went to school with some of the members of The Cold Crush Brothers and eventually became their official photographer and shot the pioneering rap group in the mid-1970`s and early 1980`s capturing the first historical moments of hip-hop.
Conzo would also go on to shoot The Treacherous 3, The Fearless Four and The Fantastic 5 in early historical venues such as The Roxy, Harlem World and Ecstasy Garage.
Conzo also shot historical photographs of Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bambaataa and hip-hop founder DJ Kool Herc.
Conzo’s father Joe Conzo Sr. was a close friend of Latin music legend Tito Puente, who Conzo also shot extensively as well.
Conzo’s photographs have appeared in films, books and in exhibits around the world, most notably at The Schomburg Center For Research In Black Culture in New York City.
Conzo continues to photograph hip-hop artists today and most recently shot pictures of the recent Occupy: Wall Street protest.

February 13th – 2Pac releases his fourth album and first for Death Row Records “All Eyez On Me”, on this day in 1996.
The album spawned two number one hit singles; “California Love” (ft. Dr. Dre and the late great Roger Troutman of Zapp) and “How Do You Want It?” (ft. K-Ci & JoJo).
Other hit singles on this classic set included “2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted” (ft. Snoop Dogg), “All Bout U” and “I Ain’t Mad At Cha.”
Other guests on the album included The Dogg Pound, Danny Boy, Michel’le, Rappin’ 4-Tay, the late Nate Dogg, Method Man, Redman and P-Funk legend George Clinton.
The double disc has sold over nine million copies worldwide and was reportedly recorded in two weeks.

February 14th - The Funky 4 Plus One perform their classic hit “That’s The Joint” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on this day in 1981, becoming the first hip-hop group to appear on national television.

February 15th - Big L was shot to death in Harlem, New York, on this day in 1999.
Big L, who was born Lamont Coleman in Harlem, began to freestyle at age 12 and soon formed a group called Three The Hard Way. After members of the group went their separate ways, he formed another group called Children Of The Corn with future rap superstars Ma$e and Cam’Ron, whoat the time used the stage monikers Murda Mase and Killa Cam. Cam’Ron’s cousin Bloodshed was also a member.
Around this time Big L met Lord Finesse at an autograph session in a Harlem record store and the two exchanged phone numbers.
After the death of Bloodshed in a tragic automobile accident, members of Children Of The Corn decided to go their separate ways and pursue solo careers.
Big L would first appear on a record when he was featured as a guest on the 1992 Lord Finesse 12 inch single remix for “Yes You May.”
The first album Big L would appear on would be Showbiz & A.G.’s “Runaway Slave” on the track “Represent”, also released in 1992.
That same year Big L won the Nubian Productions Freestyle competition which consisted of 2000 contestants.
In 1993, Big L was signed to Columbia Records and he released his first single “Devil’s Son.”
Three more singles followed over the next year; “Clinic”, “No Endz, No Skinz” and the underground cult classic “Put It On.”
During this time Big L also became part of the Diggin’ In The Crates crew, also known as D.I.T.C., whose members included Fat Joe, Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Buckwild and Showbiz & A.G.
In 1995, Big L finally released his long awaited debut album “Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous.” Big L’s previous singles appeared on the album as well as another single “M.V.P.”, which also became another cult classic.
In 1996, Big L left Columbia over creative differences and formed his own label called Flamboyant Entertainment Records and began work on his sophomore joint “The Big Picture.”
In 1998, Big L released the single “Ebonics” as well as appearing on D.I.T.C.’s first single “Dignified Soldiers.”
“The Big Picture” was finally released a year and a half after his murder and featured “Ebonics” as well as another single “Flamboyant.”
Guests on the posthumous release included Fat Joe, Kool G. Rap, O.C., Remy Ma, Sadat X of Brand Nubian, Big Daddy Kane, the late 2Pac Shakur and Guru formerly of Gang Starr.
Producers on “The Big Picture” included DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Ron Brown and Ron G. to name a few.
Three more posthumous albums have been released since his death. A documentary entitled “Street Struck – The Big L Story,” is set to be released in 2012

February 17th – The Geto Boys release their debut album “Makin’ Trouble” on Rap-A-Lot Records, on this day in 1984.
The original line-up of the group consisted of Bushwick Bill, DJ Ready Red, Sire Jukebox and Prince Johnny C.
After the release of “Makin’ Trouble”, the label dropped Sire Jukebox and Prince Johnny C from the group and added Scarface and Willie D who along with Bushwick Bill and DJ Ready Red would become the new Geto Boys, with Ready Red eventually leaving the group.
The track “Assassins” would be covered by Insane Clown Posse 10 years later on their album “The Amazing Jeckel Brothers.”

February 21st – 2Pac released the single “Dear Mama” from his album “Me Against The World” on Interscope Records, on this day in 1995.
The song was dedicated to his mother Afeni Shakur, a former Black Panther.

February 23rd – Naughty By Nature released their third album, the platinum selling “19 Naughty III” on Tommy Boy Records, on this day in 1993.
The album spawned the hits “Written On Ya Kitten”, “It’s On” and the classic anthem “Hip-Hop Hooray”, whose video was directed by Spike Lee.
The classic set also featured guest appearances by Freddie Foxxx and the late great Heavy D.

February 24th – Jeru The Damaja protégé and Gang Starr Foundation member Afu-Ra released “Afu-Ra Presents – The Perverted Monks” on Reggae Lounge Records, on this day in 2004.
Afu-Ra formed a new musical collective for this project which also consisted of Aqua Monk, Solar Monk and Caged Monk.
“Perverted Monks” contained a collage of hip-hop musical styles and featured production by Mike Rane, P.F. Cuttin’, Ill Will Fulton, Domingo, DJ Tomekk, Baby Dooks, Gang Du Lyon and Afu-Ra himself.
