Well if the foreigner didn't know english too well, first I'd probably have them use the word was correctly.

If you're looking to fill it up with musical forms that emerged out of uniquely American experiences, you'd have to have Robert Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Miles or Trane (or both), Chuck Berry, some early bluegrass or country, some psychedelic rock from the late 60s, probably Marvin Gaye, some early Detroit techno like Juan Atkins or something, some early hip-hop like Flash or Bambaataa or Kurtis Blow or something, and probably some other genres I'm not remembering. That would give you a pretty wide survey of formative artists in American music. Probably other artists could replace ones I've listed, but I'd have to insist on RObert Johnson and Louis Armstrong being in there.

I can't imagine many music fans on earth not familiar with american music. Songs that arguably define american music better than anything else:

    Born To Run
    The World Is Yours
    CREAM
    'Round Midnight
    Computer Love
    Potato Head Blues
    The Bottle
Miss you (The stones are english but their music isn't. in any way)
    Little Child Runnin Wild
    Mongoloid
    Good Times
    Locomotion
    Don't Be Cruel
    Teenage Riot
    Gasoline Dreams
    Inside My Love
    Voodoo Child
    The Lady In My Life
    Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)
    In The Mood

^^^ This would make a compilation that I would be captivated by start to finish, you'd have to get the tracks in the right order though.

Failing that you could just give her a PCP album and hope it gets her wet.

the term "American Music" is such a loose/general term. did you mean regardless of genres, quality american music from back in the day to now ?
