Lets be clear here, I dont usually speak about this, but it is becoming more of a phenomena with the Clan members blaming me for whatever goes on in here.
Most of you here think that I own this site. This site did use to belong to me. Back when 5 Elements were running, Jordi and I took over with funding from RZA to make it an official site. Under RZA's guidance we were updating the front page as many times as RZA gave us news. I used to call him weekly and have it updated. He made it very clear to me that anybody wanting advertisement space, including Clan members, it would have to be paid for since everybody had a budget. Even his own label had to pay to promote Birth Of A Prince. RZA was very clear and fair in that aspect.
I was allowed to promote for free, for one single reason only... which was that I was not going to get paid for any work I would do for this site. As we went on, the site got bigger and bigger and was becoming extremely popular with at one point 47000 active forum members, one million hits a day and ranked at #374 in the world. You can imagine that the costs for running this site exceeded RZA's funding. At that point we did not have advertisement yet and so we asked RZA for more funding to pay for a stronger hosting service as we now exceeded 1200 GB bandwidth per day. RZA either did not understand what we meant or simply declined, but in the end we did not get more funding and the site kept crashing.
This frustrated Jordi a lot and when the site finally crashed for good due to an extreme number of visitors he backed out, threw away the content and said goodbye to all of us. The site was gone for 7 months. I, on the other hand was very frustrated to see a lot of my own hard work go to waste and plus I still had my album coming out for which I would need promo.
So at my own cost I decided to bring it back myself. I found Tom, who was a web designer working with Wu-Wear Germany and offered him a position in the site which would benefit his online store and so he agreed to redesign it all and we would share the cost of running it.
This is how the "site-owned-by-ringz" thing come to life. RZA and I had a disagreement about this site when it came back up because he felt I should give it right back to him. And I initially did not have a problem with that but I wanted to keep control until after my album was out to secure my promo, but more than that, having seen the way they handled their own websites such as wu-tang.com, the-rza.com, etc etc.. I felt that once they would use their own web designers and masters, it would go downhill very fast with everything that we had built up here. Egoistically thinking I felt they did not know how to run a website like this and that they would ruin it.
Also, not to blame RZA or Vine or anyone, but sometimes due to whatever reason, certain employees do not get paid or dont get paid on time and that might lead to further ruin of the site if the new webmasters decided to leave. Needless to say RZA and I agreed last year to keep Tom running it for now and I would put it back in his name, which I did.
However, over the years and still I have been getting blamed for all the criticism/trash talk the Clan gets on this site. And it now seems that no matter how many times I explain that this is an open forum where people post their opinion, and that people have a freedom of speech and that even I get trashed as a RZA dickrider, wack rapper or whatever, the Clan will continue to believe that I am the one posting all the negativity about them and/or allow people to be negative towards them. Not everybody in the Wu, but I would say at least half of them.
And it's mostly fueled by people around them that say shit like "yo niggaz said this that and the third on ringz site yo" or "yo ringz just posted a video of you doing ....."
It's really tiring and frustrating and irritating and also very unfortunate. Because they can all register here and post, or even record a video and post here so people know it's real but I dont understand why they dont. They just want to continue to think that I own this site and I'm the guy running it and posting this and bla bla bla.
And yes, truth be told they are not very fond of the criticism they get here. Now in their defense there is a fair deal of useless trash talk and negativity and that is unfortunate. But that too is still a freedom of speech. When things become too ridiculous we do ban people and not because of the trash talk mainly, but when dudes keep opening weird threads for nothing, posting gore or porno and such, we try our best to delete it ASAP.
Some of them have asked me to shut it down or have negative stuff about them deleted. I have always refused this because if I allowed one, the rest will follow and freedom of speech would be totally gone for everyone here.
So this is the friction between myself and a bunch of Clan members over the past few years and every now and then I will be referred to as a 'loosely connected guy' or a terrorist as not too long ago I was referred to by GZA after he saw a video on YouTube for 'In The Name Of Allah' thinking it was my official video. So how do you handle something like this?
I just let it slide and kept it moving. And then when it's album time they're all there. Some at payment, some for the love, and it's all good. And you will see when my album drops, I will get dropped, dissed again, etc etc.
But I think I'm getting to a stage in my career where I just wanna do whatever's necessary to release Wu music the fans deserve. I have always been loyal to the Clan and will remain so to the best of my ability. But loyalty to the fans is equally important.
Loyalty is, in the end.. royalty.
As for updating the front page. If they have any news, they should provide us with it and we shall post it wherever they want it, for however long they want it. Even advertisement is fine and free. You see we promoted Raekwon. Why? Cause he embraced the site and got involved and provided news and info, pics, etc. But you cant expect myself or Tom to look for news every day and post it and in the end get the boot for it.
I appreciate the fans handling most of the news bits on the forum and maybe this site should become more of a forum site. We even thought of linking with Wu-International which we still might do. Maybe we will give the site completely back and open a fan site somewhere else. There are many options.
But we'll see how this will play out. I just wanted to tell my side of the thing.
Peace
