    They put him in there probaly just to bulk up the story so they could actually make 2 Hobbit movies

    I think hes a prince or is of high ranking cause he represented the woodland realm in the fellowship of the ring..and since the dwarves travel thru ... i think thats why they brought him into this story..

    He's indeed a prince, Thranduil's son...but bringing him in cuz of this fact, I dunno...Legolas has nothing to do with the events in The Hobbit so bringing him in is probably just to appeal to a certain demographic and like I said, to bulk up the story so they can make 2 3-hour Hobbit movies...As it is now I think this is just a dumb move but I haven't seen the movie yet so I'll pass judgement then but as of now, having Legolas in there...I'm skeptical

    Maybe on paper this looked like the weakest of the films with the most filler so they felt they needed something like an old character to draw attention away from this, lol...
