Default I Wish Blockbuster Video Was Still Open

The reason why Blockbuster Video closed is because the internet has made a lot of people lazy. People would rather get movies online than go to a video store and browse to see what movies are on the shelf. I miss going there and browsing the shelves. If there wasn't this small video store that I go to in my area, I don't know how I would get movies. I see these Redbox movie vending machines everywhere and I've never gotten movies from there because they don't accept cash. Only credit cards. I buy movies from Amazon.com but if it's a new release, I wait for the price to go down for awhile because i'm not gonna pay a expensive price. Doesn't Blockbuster still have a website? If they do, I have to check it out and see if I can rent movies from there.

Record stores and videos stores are pretty much one in the same these days with the Internet changing the industry. All the record and video stores in my region closed up shop (besides HMV which I never seem to go into).

I agree. I do miss browsing Blockbuster for movies. I don't play video games anymore but I have no idea how kids get by these days. Parents must be buying games outright? My dad would take me to Blockbuster 1-2 times a week for video games and/or movies.

Last I heard, Blockbuster was/is trying to go the Netflix route but I think they were/are too late to the game.

I had the "12 Day of Christmas" App on my iPad and they were giving away the movie Hugo one day. After downloading 5GB for this movie, I found out the hard way that all/most movies from the Apple Store are encrypted with HDCP. You need a HDCP-compatible TV/Monitor and HDCP-compatible cables to play the movie. I'll never buy/download a movie from Apple again. I think Netflix is the way to go these days, as it's reasonably affordable.

I use IMDB nowadays to browse for movies or look for something to watch by a genre and/or actor/actress. Having worked at Blockbuster briefly, the amount of customers that would come in and request this book behind the counter that was an encyclopedia of actors work was surprising. I had no idea at the time that something existed.

Blockbuster could have bought Nexflix for $50 million in the early 2000's, but declined. Today Nexflix is worth a rumoured 19.7 billion dollars, and Blockbuster is worth that left over sandwich you have in your fridge.

Dish Network owns Blockbuster, so am sure they have something still, but you probably need a credit card.

So you will use your credit card to buy a movie from amazon, but refuse to use it with a redbox machine because its more fun to load in cash like a child?

You also stated your nostalgic preference of walking into an understocked limited-supply video store, rather than watching a streaming version online from one of the many providers. Netflix charges $7.99 a month and its unlimited.

And lastly you are asking about Blockbuster's online DVD by mail service, a dated business model (which they are killing off this month.) What's with your strange allegiance to a company that filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy three years ago?

charles, ask if your mom will let you use her internet connection again, and you can go to any of the various streaming sites and watch just about any movie or tv show for free.

No of course not. That's why people also use redbox or buy new releases through amazon prime streaming, PSN / Xbox store

There are probably also some fellow Sly-ites there giving 4 star reviews to all of Stallone's movies, charles.

Eagle Eye, i don't use a credit card to buy stuff from Amazon.com. I use checks to buy stuff from them. Why did Blockbuster file for bankruptcy?

    Is that a joke?

I kind of agree with you regarding Redbox machines though. We don't have them in Canada but living on a border city I do see them when I cross over at Grocery stores and out front of convenience stores. It seems like a good way to setup a card reader and steal information. If people are brave enough to set them up on Gas station pumps, Redbox machines seem like a pretty good target. Of course though, Redbox needs a way to hold someone responsible for returns by having a credit card on file, oppose to being anonymous with cash.

Um, they let technology pass them by.

Last year when I was in Florida there was still a Blockbuster open. Are some franchisees still operating? I never stopped, so perhaps the business was running as something else and never took down the signs.

Madchild, is what a joke? You think me using checks to buy stuff from Amazon instead of a credit card is funny? No i don't think there's anymore Blockbuster Video stores left. All of them are gone.

^ They still have store locations according to their website.

This isn't the one I drove by in Florida but they still have store hours.

I had no idea Amazon took checks.

I haven't checked out Blockbuster's website in a long time. I get movies from Amazon and there's a small video store i go to in my area that also sells pornos LOL. Yes Amazon accepts checks and they used to accept money orders and i got mad that they stopped accepting money orders.
