In june, a jury found emma czornobaj, 25, guilty of dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing the deaths of motorcyclist andre roy, 50, and his daughter jessie, 16.
On june 27, 2010, czornobaj stopped her car in the left lane of hwy 30, just outside of montreal in candiac, que., to help a family of ducks cross the road. The father and daughter crashed into the back of her honda civic and died on impact.
more than 8,700 people have signed the online petition to keep czornobaj out of prison.
The maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death is 14 years in prison. The petition calls this an "absurdly harsh punishment."
czornobaj's sentencing hearing is scheduled to start aug. 8.
