Christina Briggs is 26 years old and weighs in at 25 stone, which is equivalent in the U.S. to 350 pounds. Briggs has a problem, but not just with eating. She also has beef (pun intended) with the British government, which she holds accountable for her excessive girth.
She told the British magazine Closer:
I hate being overweight but it’s not my fault — healthy food is too expensive. A bag of apples costs the same as a multipack of crisps, but I can’t afford both.
I know I’m putting my health at risk, but I like having a takeaway at the weekends and the kids enjoy trips to McDonald's. My rent is covered by my benefits, but by the time I pay my £200 bills I’m left with hardly any cash as I have to buy the children books, clothes and nappies. I struggle to afford healthy food.
I need more benefits to eat healthily and exercise and it would be good if the government offered a cash incentive for me to lose weight. I’d like to get £1 for every pound I lose. If the price of healthy food was lowered that would help too. I need help, but I need it from the government.
Briggs claims she can't afford to join a gym, and obviously she is familiar with the law prohibiting exercising at home. She is currently unemployed and receiving more than $32,000 in annual benefits from the government.
It seems to me that the solution to her problem is simple. She should relocate to the U.S. while Barack Obama is still in office. If his actions to date are any indication, it would be his privilege to make her another ward of the state.
