Today In Hip-Hop: R.I.P. Ol’ Dirty Bastard (November 15, 1968-November 13, 2004)
Today marks the 10 year anniversary of Ol Dirty Bastard’s death. On November 13, 2004, ODB collapsed at approximately 4:35 p.m. at RZA’s recording studio in New York City. Ol’ Dirty Bastard, born Russell Tyrone Jones was pronounced dead at 5:04 p.m. His funeral was held in Brooklyn’s Christian Cultural Center. ODB’s official cause of death was determined to be an accidental drug overdose, with an autopsy finding a lethal mixture of cocaine and the prescription drug tramadol.
One of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, ODB is known as one of the more beloved members of the crew. He is famous for his trademark “drunken monkey” style of rapping, and erratic behavior, including famously crashing the Grammy award stage to say “Wu-Tang is for the children.” In a career that first came to prominence after the release of Wu-Tang Clan’s classic debut Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and ultimately stretched to solo success, ODB’s music touched many lives and helped forge a foundation for the popularity of hip-hop today. Whether it was as Ol’ Dirty Bastard, ODB, Dirt Mcgirt, Big Baby Jesus and all the other stops in between, Ol’ Dirty Bastard touched the lives of many.
Some of the hits that Ol’ Dirty Bastard helped create include “C.R.E.A.M,” “Protect Ya Neck,” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” among others. R.I.P. Ol’ Dirty Bastard.
