ISIS terrorists have taken a number of hostages at a café in Martin Place, Sydney. Around 12 hostages are reported to be held at the cafe by armed gunmen. Staff and customers inside the cafe are said to be sobbing as they are forced to stand with their hands against the window and holding up the ISIS flag.
The exact number of people held hostage have not been confirmed, but many were seen with their hands against the café windows.
Police have surrounded the building and the surrounding areas after reports of the attack at 9.45 a.m. local time. All local transportation to Martin Place have been stopped.
According to CNN, a witness saw a man with a blue sports bag with what appeared to be a gun inside. She tipped off police and shortly after, he reportedly entered the Lindt cafe.
Mia Burns, who works as a news producer for The Seven Network newsroom, which is located across the street from the café, tweeted: "'Hostages against the glass of Lindt café. Some are shaking and sobbing."
According to Daily Mail, 22-year-old Omarjan Azari, who was arrested on terrorism charges in September, was planning a public beheading in Martin Place, where the café is located.
The alleged terror plot, which was overheard between Azari and Australian terrorism recruiter in Syria, Mohammad Ali Barylei, involved grabbing a random member of the public and beheading them in public before covering their body in a flag. The act of terrorism was going to be filmed to be used as ISIS propaganda.
However, before the plan was carried out, Azari was arrested on Sept. 18 and charged with preparing for an act of terrorism.
