Default Do you think rappers cadence changed once they started typing their lyrics?

I used to rap and I had a 'continuous stream of conscious' flow that was more popular in the 90s than today. When my younger brother (who sounds more modern) and I did a song together, he laughed because i 'still write'. It's weird for me to text lyrics especially on the phone as most do now.

When you write something about the pen allows you to flow and there's more focus on the relationship the words have with each other as a whole. When you text it's about the specific words themselves. Anyone that raps should try it and see how their verse will come out. I tried texting lyrics just to experiment and I noticed a few things

    1. you have to slow down
    2. it's boring
    3. it's harder to gauge how the entire verse will flow
    4. each line is 'its own' thing
    5. you're easier to understand when you text

I can only speak for myself.

I always write on paper make a few draughts then transfer it.
But given my age that's how I always would do anything, paper was a necessity
Paper & Pen give you a senee of emptying yourself onto it plus it's more intimate.

I have just typed verses before but more often than not....
I would go back to writing on paper and feel the difference & benefit.

Only good thing I can think of is how clear it looks once you have it typed
But to me that comes from the endless pieces of paper condensed down.

Without a blueprint while just typing writer's block seaps in....
As your not even writing lol

    It's a generation thing too.
When I was at school we didn't have computers or laptops.
And when we did they were marveled at rather than being utilized.
Now it's the norm for most growing up same as not speking on the phone
The art of conversation is now summed up in a text message these days....shame.

I always wrote in my head, at work, while surfing, swimming, any time my mind was free to focus. Then I'd pen it when I got the chance.

Also there's no fucking way I'd have the patience to write even one verse on a phone.

Put it this way, writing this post was painful for me.

Possibly, but then theres other factors that also have changed the way rappers rap. Shit is always changing. The difference between 1983 and 1988 is fucking huge.

You can certainly cite something like the hashtag style to the era of modern technology.

I've written both ways and theres not a massive difference. As long as you can get your ideas and lines down fast it should be the way it was in your head. If you start spending a long time getting the words right then it starts to affect the flow.

The lyrics in 'The Message' >>>>> the accumulation of every verse written after about '98 + the majority of verses written before '98.

    The second verse = G.O.A.T

right, i would get bored/frustrated and quit. When i write the thoughts are too fast to text. That's why i think people that text their lyrics have to slow down and structure it a different way. Each line is it's own thing and thoughts are clearer when you type but the flow, cadence and composition are better when you write.

    very interesting.

i take it this is different for everyone.

ive tried all methods and when i write bars down via pen and paper, they are dumb. short and stupid like a fucking haiku or some shit. i cant write as fast as my brain can formulate sentences that string together. even using shorthand. which leaves me missing a lot of good lines.

texting it out over phone is okay as i can do that faster than writing but i tend to get pissed that T9 word doesnt know how to spell half the words i want to use and i find myself throwing in a lot of commas and breaks to get people to understand my flow when i phone text rap this also dumbs down my raps in the process.

i prefer typing it on the computer because i can type faster than i can write and i dont end up missing a single word in any given line. also i prefer to heavily research all my bars which being on the computer makes it easily accessible to the knowledge i need or if i need to double check something real quick to clear my mind for the next line its easy as pie. this method also allows me to go back and fix my lines without any problems, like if they do not flow the way i initially intended them to.

ive written simple 300 word verses and just a paragraph below in the word document are all the bars that i had to take out and replace to fully structure that one verse and sometimes it ends up being more words than the actual verse ahah.

but yeah its 2015 and i stepped into a booth with a couple cats and i had a bunch of my verses on paper and i pulled out my manila folder and everyone laughed at me. hahah everyone else had their shit written on the phone

with that being said i like to also think that i have a "'continuous stream of conscious' flow" of sorts. i like to call it reading an audio book hahah
